The Nature of Man - Trichotomy Stated and Refuted Part 2 — John Murray

There will be a planned test covering the material up to that time, both in lectures and in the textbook. What chapters in the textbook will be covered by that time. We will have a sort of test each time I'll have you, and I wonder how you're getting along.

Surely how I'm getting along with you. We're dealing with the subject of psychotomy, and I have been dealing with this topic. If you remember, I sat down in the resurrection body. Influenced by the resurrection, the resurrection, therefore, by the Holy Spirit.

The Psychical and Spiritual Man

There are other references. For example, Colossians 5 .19 and Colossians 3 .16, where Paul is not one in or numberless in that conclusion that in no one instance is the psychotomic view of error. In numerous instances, the other meaning is of error, and the other meaning is appropriate in every instance.

So the contrast in the New Testament between Pseudic Heart, Pneumatic Heart, is not between the man who has only a soul, and the man who in addition has also a spirit, means man as he is in himself. ...situated, directed, and governed by his own self, by his own psyche.

In a word, it is man situated and governed by the Holy Spirit. ...between any duality that exists within man himself. ...say it doesn't consist in any duality that exists within man himself, or in any antithesis.

Hebrews 4:12 and the Word's Penetrating Power

So the word of God is likewise sharp and penetrating, and able to lay bare the distinction between soul and spirit, and the word be given between them. So separation is finished. That's the idea. Well, that does not comport with the relationship which joints and matter sustain to one another in the human brain.

Joints and matter are not adjacent. A sharp soul to get in between joints and matter, because they're not adjacent in any case.

Bones are adjacent.

Joints and bones are adjacent. Joints I take to be ligament. Joints and bones are adjacent, and marrow and bones are adjacent. But not joints and marrow. The bones have reached in any sphere. It doesn't comport with the expression joints.

Whereas when you recognize that joints and marrow are the most inaccessible part of our physical existence, the most inaccessible part, they sustain to one another, and there is the place that they occupy in the human brain.

The Heart, Thoughts, and Intents in Hebrews 4:12

Now that was just one probabilitary consideration. Now a second. But if you are going to make a hard and fast distinction metaphysically between soul and spirit, likewise on a metaphysical distinction between soul and spirit at heart.

But the life and speech not only of soul and spirit, but also the eternal of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Whether he supports more than Tragkotton. Well, that's all I'm going to say on this topic.

The Three Terms in 1 Peter 5

In which we should expose the totality. Verses which Tragkotton bases upon merit law. It seems between. Now I come to a passage. 1 Peter 5. You remember what it says, don't you? I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body.

And Soma. And again. This passage is a key to establishing a necessary metaphysical distinction between soul and spirit. A necessary metaphysical distinction. Now what are we going to say about this? Well.

First of all. We have found already. That it is characteristic of the church. To make an accumulation of terms. In order to express completeness. Give us an accumulation of terms. In order to express completeness.

And we write in the example. We found already with Mark 12 .30. The sum of devotion. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and strength and mind. Heart and soul and strength and mind. Since there is.

We shall notice some kind of distinction between soul and spirit. It is thoroughly appropriate. The apostle Paul. He is praying for the complete separation. Of the saints. The central anchor. Would use such an expression as this.

In order to. Convey the thought of completeness. That has to be said is. That there are numerous other expressions. All of these thoughts. And in the New Testament. Reflect on the completeness of personality.

And the completeness of sanctification. And we are compelled. To lay as much weight. If not more weight. On the numeric instances. In which only two terms. Are used. As we are upon this instance. For three terms.

There we are. Stop at that point today. Now I'll bring this. To a conclusion tomorrow. And deal with. The distinction which may properly be drawn. Or at least. So that a distinction may properly be drawn.

Between soul and spirit. So not. After the fact upon. Pattern. Spirit is forever settled in heaven. And that when we shall appear. Before digestion seat. We shall be judged. According to thy word. Accept of us now.

O Lord for Jesus sake. Amen.
