Ryan Turner of http://www.carm.org discusses why Psalm 45:3-5 is not a prophecy for the coming of Muhammad
- 00:12
- Does Psalm 45 verses 3 through 5 actually predict the coming of Muhammad?
- 00:18
- Well, the passage reads as the following. Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and in your majesty, and in your majesty ride on victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness.
- 00:30
- Let your right hand teach you awesome things. Your arrows are sharp, the peoples fall under you, your arrows are in the heart of the king's enemies.
- 00:38
- That's Psalm 45 verses 3 through 5. Now our Muslim friends argue that since verse 3 refers to someone coming with the sword to subdue his enemies, these
- 00:48
- Muslims often argue that this passage refers to Muhammad who is known as the prophet of the sword.
- 00:54
- These Muslims argue that this passage actually could not refer to Jesus since Jesus never came with the sword as even he himself claimed in Matthew chapter 26 verse 52.
- 01:05
- Now that's the Muslim argument. Now in response, there are a number of problems with this interpretation of the passage.
- 01:12
- First, the very next verse, Psalm chapter 45 verse 6, identifies the person coming as God whom in the
- 01:19
- New Testament Jesus actually claimed to be. In John chapter 8 verse 58 and John 10 30 are just two examples.
- 01:28
- But Muhammad denied doing this. In fact, in Muslim view, that would be blasphemy if Muhammad claimed to be
- 01:33
- God. So second, though Jesus did not come the first time with the sword, he will come in his second coming with the sword.
- 01:41
- You can look at Revelation chapter 19 verses 11 through 16 and also 2 Thessalonians 1 verse 7 through 8 are just two examples which which have that teaching.
- 01:52
- So finally, the New Testament explicitly actually refers to Christ in this passage. In Hebrews 1a, it actually claims that this passage is referring to Jesus.
