In the book of Amos, God asked his prophet a question, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, a plumb line. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them anymore.
God dropped his plumb line in their midst as he measured Israel's sin to reveal how far she had gone astray. And once the plumb line revealed how crooked they had become, he sent a judgment upon them.
I will not again pass by them anymore. The Withdrawn, Presence of God, is a terrible judgment, friends, on any people. I believe some years back God dropped his plumb line alongside the churches in America.
And discovering how far we had departed from him, he announced, I will not again pass by them anymore. The Withdrawn, Presence of God, has crippled the church in this country to where she just hops about on the crutches of denominational programs and man-centered methodologies.
And God is a million miles away, and we are in such spiritual declension nobody has even noticed. I believe in preaching, but also believe that nothing can happen unless God confirms his word by the confirming work of the Holy Ghost.
But when God goes to work and conviction of sin, then a hardened sinner will be awakened to his lost condition and become alarmed to his danger of dying in his sins and going to a devil's hell. When God is at work, sinners will be brought to the verge of eternity and see the flashes of hellfire on their souls.
All hell will break loose in our communities and towns when a man full of the Holy Ghost preaches in the power of the Spirit of God, and God is at work confirming his word. Lives will be transformed for all eternity as false foundations are broken up and all false refuges preached away so that sinners are shut up to God and God alone to save them.
When God's prophet shows up in town and proclaims with a holy fear of God, thus saith the Lord, all hell will break loose as demons cry out in rebellion through captive sinners. When the British evangelist George Whitefield preached, he preached under such authority and power of God that all hell would break loose during his sermon.
People would stand for hours in the rain and snow to hear him. Some of his hearers would be driven mad. In fact, his very first public address preached at St. Mary de Krip Church in Gloucester, it was said that his sermon drove 15 people mad.
Other hearers of Whitefield would grow so enraged they would throw stones and dirt and eggs at him and even pieces of dead cats. One man climbed a tree with a sword to try to cut off his head while he preached.
Another blew a trumpet. People would roar at the tops of their lungs to try to drown out the piercing gospel. Others would drop dead where they were standing as they resisted the Spirit of God. God was at work confirming his word through revival and all hell was busting loose on the land.
The power of God was so evident in the Apostle Paul that everywhere he went, he caused a riot and was either arrested and beaten or run out of town. And wherever Jesus went in his earthly ministry, all hell would break loose as demons cried out.
What have we to do with thee? Jesus thou son of God, art thou come hither to torment us before the time? When Jesus entered a town or village, he would disrupt the demonic factors in that area to such degree that in one case the demons went to a herd of swine and rushed headlong into the sea.
Then the inhabitants of the land there begged Jesus to leave their town. In the book of Acts, as the early Christians preached and evangelized cities, all hell would bust loose as local merchants grew enraged that their crooked enterprises were exposed and brought to light and their commerce was injured and riots were incensed by mobs of angry townspeople and demons were crying out all over the place because they had become disturbed by the preacher.
Because Christians in those days turned the world upside down. When God is at work confirming his preached word, all hell was bust loose. I've preached in some places where I couldn't move the people with a bulldozer.
All my energy and pleadings fell on deaf ears. But I've seen other times when God showed up and faces changed to looks of alarm and eyes grew red from tears and God's presence was so thick people were frozen in their chairs and they could not move under Holy Spirit conviction.
I've got some sermons that are crackerjacks, but they aren't worth a dime without the confirming and attending Spirit of God. Oh my friends, how we need God today to show up in our midst and feel the awful disturbing presence of a crucified Christ.
When was the last time, friend, that you felt the power of God in a meeting? I fear we have so diluted the gospel message to make it more palatable to sinful man and we have further reduced salvation to a few simple steps that all you have to do to be saved is to follow them.
That we have eliminated the need for the Spirit of God to work in men's hearts. Through our modern evangelism folks just make a mental flip for Jesus. Without ever sensing the living reality of Christ in the life or the Spirit of God in the soul of man.
They join the church and remain unconverted. This once saved, always saved, sin all you want to crowd will bust hell wide open when they die. They are strangers to Holy Ghost conviction and remain outside the redeeming blood of Christ.
How desperately today we need men like Jonah who will emerge from the deep waters of purging and preparation to stride across our cities crying out to God in God's name for repentance. To thunder God's unbending law in the ears of guilty sinners so they can sense God's wrath towards sin and see Sinai altogether on a smoke.
All hell will break loose in a town when God shows up in his glorious majesty and power. When that happens men and women and boys and girls will be snatched from the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of light and life.
Our young folks today are going to hell in droves dying in their 20s from drugs and alcohol. It's a godless generation with no morals or direction. They desperately need Jesus. We need to preach a crucified Christ on a bloody cross for sin and warn men of their duty of repentance and a future judgment and the rutter necessity of regeneration.
We need to stop turning our churches into houses of entertainment and get back to preaching a God-centered gospel. We need God. We need holy ghost conviction. Let us fall down on our knees in repentance with our faces drenched in tears of humility of heart and cry out to God in desperation to come down from on high to be in our midst once again.
Oh great God send us a Whitfield or a Moody for our day. Turn this nation back to thee great God. Bring this country to her knees one way or the other in the strong name of Jesus. Amen. Amen.
