A Vision of My Mission (Field)--part 1 — Aaron Hurst

My Father is rich. In houses and lands, He holds the wealth of the world in His hands. Hallelujah. What a blessing to be here this morning. I'm blessed at how the Lord has ordered the service. Thank you each one that has shared.

It's been inspiring, encouraging to our hearts. Amen. Could we kneel together for prayer? Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come and thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

So be it, Lord. Father, I'm just an earthen vessel. Oh, God, fill me now, Lord. Father, visit with us now, Lord. Show us your heart, Lord. In these next few moments here, in this little message, Lord, that I feel you've laid upon my heart.

Oh, God. But, Lord, I can't say it as I ought, Lord. I can't change lives. But, Lord, you can. So, Father, please come and sanctify this vessel. That I would only say those things you want me to say, Lord.

That I'd only do what you want me to do, Lord. That I'd go where you want me to go, Lord. That I'll be what you want me to be, Lord. Father, we put our faith in you, Lord. Even as we heard in the children's class and in the family verses and opening meditation, Oh, how great you are, Lord.

Father, we put our faith and our trust in you. Bless this congregation in the father part of the service, Lord. Speak to us, Lord. We love you and we praise you. Thank you for hearing our prayer. In Jesus' name, amen.

Thank you all for coming. What a blessing it is to be gathered in the house of the Lord this morning. I've still been chewing over and meditating on our missions conference. What a blessing it was to see the heart of God come through in all of those different booths, those workshops, the messages.

Were you blessed? Every part, every aspect of our missionary God. I was really blessed. I was really encouraged and my heart was challenged. And I'd like to just continue in that vein a bit, if I may, this morning.

The Questions Behind a Personal Mission

Let me give you the title of the message. My Mission. Forgive my writing. My Mission. Oh, may I do that? My Mission. Parenthesis. Field. My Mission. A couple of questions. Why was I born? What is the reason for my existence?

Why am I here? What is the purpose in my life? What are my dreams? My goals? As an almost 50-year-old man, husband, father, what are my dreams and my goals? As an almost 16-year-old, as one turning 20 shortly, what are my dreams and my goals?

Do I have any? What is my mission? What do I believe? What is the foundation of my belief? You know, what I really believe. What makes me tick, as they say. What am I doing to accomplish those goals? Am I satisfied with my present state of life and walk of life?

Does life hold mission and purpose and clear direction? If not, why not? And if not, how can I get a vision? My Mission. We find it in the scripture in many different ways described. Paul called it, my course.

When I finished my course, what is your course? What is my course? What is my mission? What is my purpose? I'd like to share this message this morning to the rest of us. I praise God for all the effort and the advancement of missions to the unreached tribes.

Glory! As I pondered over it and thought about the number of missionaries that have been sent from this congregation, from our sister church's congregation, and I thought of the total number of Christians, it might be, what, 15%, 10

Probably 15 would be shooting a little high. If we would include all those that have been to foreign missions and have returned, it might be a little higher than 10%. But my brother, my sister, what about us?

What about you? What about me? Now, I wrote my mission field, and I'm not saying just me, but I didn't say your mission field, but I put it in personal perspective. My mission field. Lest you think about, oh, that person's mission field.

No, I want you to think this morning, my mission. Mission is a service to perform or a purpose to perform, as I looked up in the dictionary. Of course, it's often used in the context of Christians being sent as ambassadors or as missionaries to carry the gospel to those who haven't heard.

Vision from Proverbs 29:18

I'd like for you to open your Bible this morning to Proverbs 29 and verse 18. Proverbs 29 and verse 18. Where there is no vision, the people perish, but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Give me a vision of my mission.

For where there is no vision, the people perish. They perish? A vision. Strong says it's a revelation of the oracle. Fliers says it's a vision, an oracle, a prophecy. Divine communication. A vision. A vision.

An oracle from God. A vision. What is your mission? Why am I here? To sleep. To eat. To go to work. To come home. To eat. To sleep. And do it all over again the next day. Yeah, we do those things. We need to sleep.

We need to eat. We need to go to work. But if that's all the higher our vision is, oh, we perish. Perish? We lose heart, brother Paul. We faint. We get tired of the same old drudgery every day. What is my mission?

Why am I here? Without a vision, the people perish. They go back. That's what it says. That's the definition of the word perish. They go back. Some people, they get so tired of their boring life. And God forbid we should call it Christian.

But they go back. They give up. They let loose restraint. They said it not. That high. That holy calling of God in Christ Jesus. Because they don't have a vision. The daily cares of life. And the necessities.

Pressing upon them. And their eyes become dim. And the cares of this life. And of the world. And of other things. And telephones. And emails. And job. And everything pressing in. They lose the vision.

Why am I here? Yeah, you know, if this goes too far, finally. The people not only said it not. And the perishing and then go back. But yes, they cast off restraint and go naked. That's what it says in the definition.

And act like savages. Become totally setting it not. What is my mission? Oh, I'd like for this morning for you to help me to identify what is my mission. Lord, give us a vision of my mission field. What is the mission of a Christian?

Somebody tell me real quickly. Number one. What is your number one mission as a Christian? Keeping God's laws. Worship. Another one. Tim. Glorify God. Yes. Make no mistake. Number one. Number one. Number one in the center of the Christian life is to glorify God.

For thy pleasure we are and were created to bring glory to God. And if we will lose sight of this one. We've lost it all. So we must love the Lord our God. To fear the Lord our God. To love Him. To walk in His ways.

The first commandment is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all of thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.

This is the first commandment. Doesn't seem very boring, does it? It doesn't seem very, oh well, ho-hum. When we get ho-hum and start to become bored, it's because we've lost the vision of the mission.

And you see, I'm sharing this this morning because I just felt the Lord just urging me. I felt a little funny. There were other messages I'd have rather preached. But I just couldn't get away from this one.

So I said, OK, Lord. Because you know what can happen? Now don't misunderstand me. But when we look at our foreign missionaries, we can sort of elevate them up there. We can maybe pat ourselves on the back.

We put a little money in the offering. But we just go about our own life as people without a mission. And without a field. Brother, sister, there's a mission to be accomplished for our king. And there's a field.

What is it? What is my mission? Oh, yes. Ye are a chosen generation of royal priesthood and holy nation of peculiar people that you should show forth the praises of him. Who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Is there anybody in United States who needs to see the power of God that can call forth people out of darkness into his marvelous light? Is there any in United States? Is there any in Lancaster County?

Is there any family members that need to see it? Is there any neighbors who need to see it? This man had a mission. And he had a vision of his mission. For me to live is Christ. That's my mission. Oh yes, there's many other things that outflow from that.

And we're going to look at those. We're going to get practical here today. What is my mission? What is my calling? Why am I here? Just to take up space? And to eat? And to sleep? And to play? And to work?

And to drink? And then to eat? Yes, I need to work. I need to eat. I need to sleep. Ah, but the mission is a lot greater than that. And if God's people lose sight of the mission and have a vision for the mission, we're going to lose our way.

We are not except from this verse. Without a vision, the people perish. So number one is Christ. I wish I could write this larger. And I'm going to run out of space. So as a Christian, my life is to glorify God.

It's to exalt the mighty God. Who has brought me out of darkness into His marvelous light. He has delivered me from the prison house, Brother Paul. He has set my feet on a rock and established my goings.

Praise the Lord! Number two. Now we start to break this thing down. How many married people do we have here this morning? Can I see your hands? Alright, amen. Thank you, thank you. What is your mission in marriage?

Somebody want to answer? There's a beautiful verse. Oh, it's one of my favorites in marriage. Why did God take two people? A male and a female. And join them together. And make them one. Why did He do it?

Why, why? Somebody tell me. Yes, Brother. To love my wife as Christ loved the church. Amen. A picture of Christ and the church. That's what I had. There's another one. There's a lot more. Yes, Brother Daniel.

Ah, to preserve a godly seed. That He might seek a godly seed. Yes. Malachi 2 .15. Did not God make them one? Wherefore one? That He might seek a godly seed. I want to challenge us married people this morning.

Why did I get married? Oh, yes. God knew we needed companionship. God knew it was good for a man to have a wife. And God made a woman for the man. Yes, God knew all of that. So that I shouldn't be lonely in life and going through life alone.

But, hey, we're going to talk about singles too. So don't hit me too hard yet if you're single this morning. But why did He make of the two one? That He might seek a godly seed. Ah, that puts a different perspective on it, doesn't it?

My children are an heritage of the Lord that He has given to me. And God gave these children to me. Because He is seeking a godly seed. A godly righteous seed. A seed that is godly. They're God conscious.

They're God focused. Their life is Christ. Yes. Oh, He says, children, they're an heritage of the Lord. And the fruit of the womb is His reward. I read Psalms, brother Paul. Psalm 127. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of the youth.

Happy is the man that has his quiver full of them. They shall not be ashamed. But they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Oh, yes. And to show the great mystery of Christ and His church. The unity and the oneness in a husband and a wife relationship shows the beautiful mystery of the unity and the oneness of Christ and His church.

Ah, let's not mar that picture in our marriages. But that there be that beautiful unity of oneness of heart and mind and soul and purpose. Speaks to my own heart. Yeah, as you look on the Christians today.

As the world looks on, sad to say. Christians don't get along much better in their marriages than the world does. Divorce rates about the same. That is sad. Oh, but we wouldn't do that. But when we're in the eyes of the world to behold.

Do they see the sweet fragrance of Christ coming out of my life in the way I love my wife? You know? Oh, the Christian home. We were at couples night the other night at Ephrathin. Brother Abner Kaufman was just preaching to us about the Christian home.

I knew then already I was going to preach this message and it just stirred my heart. You see, we're the only Bible that a lot of the world will read, even in America. Did you know that? Even in America.

Marriage as a Mission to Display Christ

My mission. What is my mission in marriage? Oh, it's to show forth that beautiful oneness and unity of Christ and His church in my relationship with my wife. Well, obviously the answer is clear. You already raised your hands.

But how many husbands do we have here? How many husbands do we have? Amen. Do you have a vision of your mission? Do I have a vision of my mission as a husband? What is my mission as a husband? Somebody tell me, help me.

What's my mission as a husband? Yes, Luke. Shoot them arrows in the right direction. Yes, from George. Wash your wife with the water of the word. Somebody else in the back. Trust in the Lord and lean not to your own understanding.

Amen. You know, so as married couples, you know, we could just keep making this circle. You know, and I want you this morning to identify and embrace your mission. Don't look out there, somebody else's mission looks more glamorous than yours.

But I want you to identify and embrace your mission. Ah, godliness with contentment. It's great game. It's wonderful. You know, sometimes we spin our wheels because we're always looking over the fence.

Oh, once I can do that, then I'm really going to serve God. I know, what's your mission today? Where has God called you and planted you today? So, if you're married, very clearly your mission is to guard and to keep the oneness and the unity of the spirit in your marriage.

Husbands, he says in Malachi, deal not treacherously with your wife of your youth. It's not hard, is it? My mission as a husband and a wife is to keep that oneness. We'll just call it unity. Making a circle here in the board and in the center is Christ.

And if you're a married person this morning, the next ring around, it's your spouse. That's right. But, if we lose God's priority of ordering these things, something's going to suffer. So, husband, your spouse is your number two mission.

Sorry, wives, but Christ is first. And for you married ladies, your husband is your number two mission. Husbands, follow God's word. Listen carefully to what God says. Love your wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it.

Let thy fountain be blessed. Rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Oh, delight in your wife. Be a one woman man. Dwell with your wife according to knowledge. Giving honor unto her. And yes, as a husband, you do care for some of the things of this world, how that you may please your wife.

And that is not sin. May I say that again? As a husband, you do care for some of the things of this life that you may please your wife. You may make her happy. You may bring her pleasure. You may please her.

And that is not sin. Unless it's in excess or out of order. But it's right that your wife should have her kitchen well furnished. For all the hospitality guests we men bring home. You know, I've been disappointed sometimes.

The man's shop is well prepared and well equipped with the latest tools. But his wife has to do up with that broken down hand cranker to mix the dough. But he's got the latest in his shop. Think about it men.

Wives? Yeah, the Bible says it. So, we can say it too. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands as unto the Lord. It's a very high calling. But oh, it's a high calling for us men. To love our wives as Christ loved the church.

And wives, oh, reverence your husband. Reverence your husband. Titus 2 says that they may teach young women to be sober and to love their husbands. Love your husband. You won't spoil him by loving him.

Reverence him. You won't spoil him by reverencing him. Honoring and preferring him. And yes, the unmarried woman, she is more free to serve the Lord, Paul says. But the woman that is married, she cares for the things of this world, how she may please her husband.

And it's not sin. It's not wrong. You know, a woman has a gift. If we men made up the kitchen and the living room and the dining room and the bedroom, it's hard to tell how it would look. That'd be pretty bare.

But you know, our wives have a gift. They have a gift in making it homey, you know. And it's okay for you to care about things of this world, how you may please your husband. Husbands, wives, fathers.

Parenting as a High and Holy Mission

Oh, without a vision, you perish. Fathers and mothers. God has a lot to tell us. And all of these would be sermons in their own right, I know. So please forgive me. But ye fathers, ye husbands, me. It's a lot more than to bring home a paycheck.

It is that. God forbid for the lazy man who won't work and his wife wonders how they're going to be provided for. That's not right. Oh, but ye fathers, he says, I've given you an heritage. How many fathers in here have children?

Let me see your hands. Yes, amen. Ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Colossians says it this way. Ye fathers, provoke not your children to anger.

Why not? Unless they be discouraged. I was telling my son the other day as we were sharing together. You know, I said there's something about it within us. That I as a father, I have to wage war against that.

And have to overcome my fear or shyness. I'm not sure how to explain it. To pursue my son. To have a relationship with him. To have frank open communication with my son. And I don't know if any other fathers in here this morning can identify with that.

And I don't know why it is that way. I said, well maybe it's because it was a bit lacking in my growing up years. Though I know my father had a better relationship with me than what I've talked to some men.

Who they said their relationship with their father was nonexistent. But I don't think we can just blame it on that. I don't want us to. I want us to get a vision of our mission. Dad, my mission as a father is to nurture my children in the admonition of the Lord.

Nurture? Ah, nurture. Nurture, yes, nurture. Ah, it's a beautiful picture. Nurture. It doesn't mean get the disc out. And go out there and just rip everything apart. Comes alongside the plant. Very carefully removes the weeds.

Very carefully digs about it. Fertilizes it. That's nurturing. Pretty easy to just get out that machete and start swinging. That's not nurturing. A vision of my mission. As a father. As a mother. What is your mission?

You know, I think especially of you sisters. And how sometimes you might be tempted. Tempted to be fall prey to the overload of the daily routine. One more diver to change. One more spill to clean up.

One more dispute to settle between the children. One more meal to fix. Three more loads of wash to do. Amen? And you know, I prayed for you and I thought about you. I said, Lord, please don't let our sisters be discouraged.

And think, well, I'm not telling anybody about Jesus. What can I do? I'm tied down at the house all day. Ah, yes. But remember, those children are someday going to speak with the enemy in the gate. They need your nurture.

They need your love. And it's a high and a holy calling. And it's your mission. And I make no apology about it. You who are faithfully serving, loving your husband, loving your children. That's what he says in Titus 2.

Older women. Here. Teach the young women to let their children with the babysitter and go out and pass out trash. Oh, no. No. No. You teach them to love their husbands and to love their children. Ah, yes.

It's a precious work. It's a nurturing work. It's a work that's close to the heart of God. Shaping and molding those little ones. So, when you're tempted to be discouraged, just think of those arrows in the hand of a mighty man.

Ah, a vision of my mission. Oh, yes, they're little now. But they'll so soon be grown. They receive of the attitude and of the spirit of my heart. Lord, fill me with patience. With gentleness. With kindness.

Oh, forgive me for getting frustrated, Lord. Yes. I love my children. I want them to sense that love. I want them to grow up knowing their love. Yeah, the house was a little dirty sometimes. But we had lots of love to go all around.

Oh, praise God. A vision of my mission. It changes everything. It turns those mundane daily routines into beautiful, high and lofty things for God. Do you hear that, sisters? Brothers? I thought of it this way.

And I was wishing I could illustrate it. But I didn't have time to do it. I shouldn't say it that way. I just didn't do it. But you know, you take a picture of water. Jesus at his wedding. There in Cana.

And they poured water into the pots. But lo and behold, when it was time to be borne out and delivered to the governor of the feast, it was wine. And I like to think of that in our everyday tasks of life.

If we have a vision of the mission, God will take those ordinary daily routines of the things that we must do. Yes, there are duties to do as a wife. There are my duties to do as a husband. Oh, but he'll take those things and he'll turn that effort of that water.

And when it comes out, it's wine. Oh, glory. How did it happen? Ah, a walk of faith in God. I'm not just washing dirty mouths and faces. I'm raising soldiers for God. Glory. And you know what? I'm not jealous that another sister gets to go and preach to those Africans who've never heard.

God bless her. I'm glad she's there. But I embrace and I'm content in my present state of mission service to God. Because you see, if we don't embrace it, and if we're not content in it, we will also become frustrated.

And maybe even envious. Oh, I wish I could do that. Why do they get to go and I don't? Yes. Servants, obey in all things your masters, according to the flesh, not with eye service as man pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. Ah, did you hear that? That's for all of us. It changes everything. I might be working for Luke Zimmerman. I might get a paycheck from him.

But I'm working for the Lord. And my attitude shows, if I only see my boss, and he doesn't quite act right, sometimes we don't. And I don't quite act right. Ah, the mission is suffering. The world is looking over and saying, ha, you're no different than we are.

You can't wait for Friday. You're blue on Monday. When your boss makes a mistake, you grumble at him. And you're just, you're just no different than we are. Oh, we've lost, we've lost the vision of the mission.

I'm working here to glorify God. Yeah, we could talk about children. I'll just say this one thing. You know, children, your mission, ha, it's simple. You know, all you need to do is obey your parents and the Lord.

Honor your father and your mother. You have it easy. It might look like, wow, it must be exciting. And, you know, they get to do what they want. They're their own boss. Oh, you're mistaken. They're not our own boss.

The Lord Jesus bought us with a price. We're not our own.

We must glorify God.

The Mission of Singles and the Example of Dorcas

Single sisters, amen. Do you remember this woman by the name of Dorcas? Tabitha. By interpretation called Dorcas in the book of Acts. Ah, she loved the Lord. She was a disciple of the Lord. And she was full of good works and alms deeds, which she did.

And she became sick and died. She had a ministry, apparently to the widows in Chapa. And Chapa was no little Bougainville. It was a major seaport city. And there in the midst of the city, of all the hustle and bustle and everything going on, ah, here was Dorcas.

She had a vision of her mission. Doesn't say anything about her husband, so I'm going to assume she was single. And she was full of good works and alms deeds. I don't have to. I don't have to sew these garments.

But I get to. Because there are some widows in Chapa. And they need ministering too. It says there in the book of Acts, you can look it up later, Acts 9. It says there how that Acts 9 .36 speaks of her.

And it says of all the widows that stood by weeping. They sent for Peter and said, Peter, please come to Chapa. We need you. And of course, we know the end of the story. He rose her from the dead. But what stands out to me is the widows were standing around weeping.

And they were showing the coats and the garments which Dorcas made. You know, it changes that mundane task of sitting at the sewing machine. She didn't have a sewing machine. She just, you know. But, you know that mundane task.

I've got to sew more dresses for my little girls. Oh, they're growing up so fast. Now, this one doesn't fit anymore. I've got to make some more dresses. Oh, I have to do this. No, she had a vision of the mission.

And she was making coats and garments for the widows. I don't believe she had her own little girls. According to what we read in Scripture. So, she found a mission field. Hallelujah. She was busy. Also, you single young sisters, be not discouraged.

Philip, he had four daughters. You know, they were single. No doubt about it. Four daughters. And they prophesied. They saw more than the present world that they could see with their eyes. They saw the heavenly kingdom.

And they saw the king. And they were in tune with the king. And they had the flow of the sap of the life of Jesus Christ coming into their hearts and lives. And they prophesied. Out of the abundance of their heart overflowed prophecy.

I'm not sure how it was done. It doesn't say much more than that. But they were full of the spirit of God and prophesied. Young men. Oh, yes. A vision of the mission. When we have a vision of the mission.

And of why I'm here. You know, all those other things will take their rightful place. Couldn't we say the verse we started with. That where there is no vision, the people perish. That because of no vision.

This is at least one root cause. Maybe the root cause. Of why there's other loves. Carnalities. Worldly things creep in. Because when we see the king. And we see his mission. And we have a vision. For the mission that God wants to do in me.

Oh, it makes those other things look like utter rubbish. Because they are utter rubbish. Oh, sure I need a car to get from point A to point B. Sure I need some clothes to wear. For the covering of the body.

But you know, all those fascinations. With cars. And with clothes and fashions. Just sort of fall away to the backdrop. So, it's my heart's desire this morning. Oh, not to scold you. But to bless and encourage you.

To have a vision of my mission. Young people. Old people. All of us together. Our youth. Oh, this is my prayer for our youth. Go back to Psalm 127 again. Lo, children are in heritage of the Lord. And the fruit of the womb is his reward.

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man. So are the children of the youth. Happy is the man that has his quiver full of them. They shall not be ashamed. Glory. Glory. I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

For it's the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believe it. Ah, yes. They shall speak with the enemy in the gate. Yeah, you don't have to hold them up and corral them in to keep them from the world.

Do you hear me? You don't have to build fences around them and corral them in. You don't have to keep them from the world. It never has worked very well anyhow, has it? The world is too slippery for that.

It changes itself. Like the chameleon. And it turns another color and creeps up inside there. Ah, but they shall speak with the enemy in the gate. They go out into the cities. And they are anointed of the Lord.

And they're like sharp arrows. Yeah, Jesus said. I don't say you should take them out of the world. But that you should keep them from evil. Now, I should qualify this a little bit. We don't just unwisely send undiscerning youth into situations that they're not able to handle.

We don't do that as a wise father. We don't want to do that. But to keep them in your living room. And keeping the doors locked. I know it's an extreme picture here. But I want you to catch it. And thinking, okay, that will keep the world from my children.

No, it won't. They need a vision. Of the mission. Of the king. All like Jesus. I must be about my father's business. But the Lord said, not quite yet. You're not quite prepared yet. But we are going to let you stay in the carpenter shop a little longer.

So he embraced the father's will. And submitted himself to his parents. Again, I come back. I feel like I didn't hardly get to the heart of the message. But I really want us to catch it. A vision of my mission.

Don't look at your brother or your sister. What is my mission? Identify that. And embrace it. And yes, my mission. Is to preach the gospel. To the lost. Brother Abner shared this the other evening. He said, you know.

He shared some of the experiences. Different things. But the one that stands out to me was. Not sure if it was him personally. But there was one individual that he got to rub shoulders with. He didn't preach to him.

Yet. And what happened was. This fellow was an ex-convict. It's coming back to me now. Came to their church. And then he visited in their home. And he said. You people are a little dry. In your church service of worship.

What he was used to. But he said, my your families. Are something else. So the godly home. The Christian home. See what do I have. When I get to the end of life. What do I have in my family. And that really speaks to my own heart.

What do I have. But that's for all of us. The sermon that is preaching. Loudly. Is when your orderly children. Go with you to the grocery store mom. It's preaching loudly. Sermon that is preaching. Loudly.
