DAY 193: Amos 6–9

Welcome to 5-Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today's July the 12th, and we'll be looking at Amos 6 -9. Now yesterday, Amos began his prophetic lawsuit against the nations, and then Judah, and then finally Israel.

He showed that the northern kingdom, though prosperous under Jeroboam II, was full of injustice and oppression and empty worship. Now today, Amos continues in that same historical moment. Israel still looks secure from the outside, but Amos announces that judgment is no longer distant.

The people are comfortable, wealthy, religious, and confident, yet they're ripe for exile. Even so, Amos does not end in darkness. After judgment, the Lord promises to raise up the fallen booth of David, who will bring blessings to the nations.

Complacency, Luxury, and the Coming Judgment in Amos 6–7

And in that way, Amos 6 begins with a woe against those who are at ease in Zion and secure in Samaria. The wealthy lie on beds of ivory, and they stretch out on couches. They eat rich food and sing idle songs.

They drink wine and ignore the ruin of Joseph. In other words, luxury has made them numb to the spiritual collapse of the nation. And then Amos receives visions of judgment. In chapter 7, he sees locusts and fire, and in both cases, he intercedes, and the Lord relents.

But then the Lord shows him a plumb line. Israel is crooked, and judgment will no longer be postponed. At that time, Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, tells Amos to leave and to prophesy somewhere else, but Amos answers that he did not appoint himself.

He's not a professional prophet seeking a platform. The Lord took him from the flock and sent him to speak to the people of Israel. Then in Amos 8, Amos sees a basket of summer fruit, showing that Israel is ripe for judgment.

The people who trample the needy and long for worship days to end so they can return to their dishonest gain will face a famine, not of bread or water, but of hearing the word of the Lord. Finally, chapter 9 shows the Lord standing beside the altar.

No hiding place can protect the guilty, and yet the book ends with hope. The Lord will sift Israel, but not destroy his people completely. He will raise up the fallen booth of David, repair its breaches, restore his people, and bring abundant blessing.

Complacency Cannot Cancel the Covenant Promises of God

So as you read today, I want you to ask the following question. What happens when comfort makes people deaf to the word of God? Amos 6 -9 shows that complacency cannot prevent coming judgment, but judgment cannot cancel the covenant promises of God.

And in that way, the central tension in these chapters is complacency that occurs before collapse. Israel is not trembling anymore. Israel is lounging around. The people are not fasting over their sin.

They're reclining on their ivory beds. They're not grieving over the coming national ruin. They're entertaining themselves, feeding themselves, even congratulating themselves and assuring themselves that tomorrow will continue just like it did today.

And this is why Amos is so sharp. He's preaching to people who think prosperity means safety. But wealth is not the same as blessings, and comfort is not the same as peace with God. In the same way, these visions show that judgment is measured, patient, and exact.

God is not lashing out impulsively. He's measured Israel by the plumb line, and the nation was found to be crooked. And then Amaziah's response shows another danger. When the word of the Lord threatens the religious class or the religious establishment, the priest tells the prophet to go away.

Bethel has their own worship, their priests, their altars, and their sacred spaces, but it does not want the truth. And that presses directly into our lives as well, because we have to ask ourselves whether we only welcome the word of God when it comforts us.

Do we receive correction, or do we quietly tell God's word to go preach somewhere else? We also have to look at the prosperity and the complacency of Israel, because that is exactly where our nation is.

We think that every day is just going to keep on going like it is, but what happens if the judgment of God comes? Would it not be just for the judgment of God to come upon this very nation? Yes, it would.

Do we want God's voice, or do we only want religious sounds that leave our habits untouched? Do we want holiness, or do we want the judgment that will come upon a people who abandoned their God? Amos ends, though, with hope, because God's promises are stronger than Israel's sin.

They're stronger than America's sin. The Lord will shake the house of Israel among the nations, but not one true grain will fall to the ground. Judgment will expose, it will sift, and it will remove the chaff, but God will preserve His remnant forever.

The Fallen Booth of David and the Reign of Christ

So the pattern is clear. Complacency cannot survive the holiness of God, but covenant mercy cannot be destroyed by the failure of man. And in that way, Amos 6 -9 points us directly to Jesus Christ through the promises that God will raise up the falling booth of David.

By Amos' day, David's kingdom is already so fractured that it almost looks broken. Israel and Judah are divided. The northern kingdom is corrupt. Judah is unstable. The royal house looks weak compared to the glory days of Solomon and David.

But God promises restoration. He will repair what was fallen and rebuild what has been broken. And that promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus, the son of David. He comes after the kingdom has already collapsed into ruin, and He raises up David's house in a greater form than had ever been seen before.

His throne is not limited to one little strip of land in Palestine. His kingdom gathers the nations who will be called by His name. And this is why the apostle later appealed to Amos when Gentiles were brought into the church.

The raising up of David's fallen booth is not merely a return to the old political glory. It is the reign of the risen Christ who is gathering Israel from every tribe, tongue, and nation in Israel of God.

At the same time, Christ fulfills the judgment scenes from the book of Amos as well. Israel is crooked beneath the plumb line, but Christ is the one who is perfectly upright and straight. Israel deserves a famine of hearing the word of God, but Christ is the word made flesh.

Israel cannot escape judgment, but Christ comes to bear the judgment for His people on the cross. And because He rises from the dead, the fallen booth of David will rise in Him. Amos ends not with human achievement, but divine restoration.

And what sinful kings have ruined, the wholehearted Son of God will come back and restore. So as you read Amos 6 -9 today, I want you to notice the movement from luxury to judgment to restoration. Israel is ripe for exile, but God still promises that the fallen booth of David will rise again.
