You said to me years ago, or I mean last year rather,.

Do you mind if I call you sir? I said, I insist. Yeah, and there's a story behind that. Actually, as a kid, my dad said, there's two secret words, and that's yes sir and yes ma 'am. And that was true.

I mean, out of respect to my parents and elders in the Church, I always say yes sir and.

Yes ma 'am. Now, your parents are from, are they from the New York area? They are, yeah. Both my.

Parents grew up in New York City, and they had my sister there and then wanted a better place to raise a family, so they moved to Virginia. So that's where you got your accent. I don't know if I have an accent or not.

Well, it doesn't sound like you're from Bronx or Brooklyn or anything. No sir, no sir. I was born in New Jersey, then we grew up in Southwestern.

Virginia. All right. Well, today on the show, I wanted to have Dawson in, and I think the theme should be, the topic should be, how to date, how to win a girl, what to do to get married, how a Christian man should approach that.

Does that sound about right? Yes sir, yeah, absolutely. I guess it's my show. By the way, you don't know this thing, so I'm just going to give you a daily affirmation, because I think we really, we need to be affirmed today, Dawson.

It's been, you know, a long day yesterday, stressful day, you flew in. We just need some special affirmation,.

And so I want to make sure. I declare you will experience God's faithfulness. You will not worry, you will not doubt, you will keep your trust in Him, knowing that He will not fail you. You will give birth to every promise God put in your heart, and you will become everything God created you to.

Be. Wow! I'm inspired. We should have some applause for that. Yeah. So this is called the Joel Cube, and I can just have a daily affirmation every day if I want. There's a daily inspiration, there's a sermon, and then it's got a heart button so I can have favorites if I like.

So one of my listeners sent me that years ago. I probably said something, Dawson, on the air, like, I sure could use a Joel Cube. I think these days I sure could use, like, an old 1970 Bronco. So let's start off this way.

Tell me about your salvation. How'd you get converted, where'd you hear the gospel, etc.? Yeah.

Conversion, Vocation, and Life on the Ranch

Grew up in a Christian home, going to church. So you were born a Christian? No. Definitely not born a Christian. I would say, you know, would always call myself a Christian. Throughout high school, same thing.

When I went to college, I was just exposed to the realities of life and came to terms with the fact that I really wasn't sure what I was or what I believed and kind of got to a place where I had gone down all these different avenues of trying to find myself, trying to find peace, trying to take all the wrong routes, really, and I ended up feeling pretty empty and broken.

I just decided, you know, I've tried all these things, you know, they didn't work, and it's time to give up my way, give up the way that I want to do things and let God take the reins and give my life to Christ, and that's how it started for me.

So when you say, take the reins, I'm glad you used that figure of speech. Tell me what you do, tell our listeners what you do for a living.

Well, I work on a cattle ranch in Wyoming, in western Wyoming.

And you just finished. A, what do you call it when all these calves are being born?

So calving season runs from end of March to middle of May, and it's this busy season where we're all at the ranch every day, just making sure that every calf that hits the ground has a good chance of.

Life, and yeah. So you were telling me a story the other day, and I think it's interesting, makes good radio, that sometimes, I don't know the technical terms you can tell me, sometimes a newer cow, a heifer, or, you know, two-year-old or something's going to have a calf, and the birthing process is difficult, and you have to go in with, do you put, like, chains on the calf in utero and.

Pull it out? What's all that about? Yes, sir. Yeah, yeah. So if we—.

I'm just trying to imagine that scene.

Right, yeah. A lot of times these heifers, a heifer is a, you know, it would be a female cow that has not had a calf yet, so it's her first time, and so they're a little bit smaller in frame, and a lot of times they need assistance in having a calf.

So if we see a heifer that's been trying to have a calf for more than two hours, let's say, we'll bring her in, we put her in a head catch so her head's caught, she can't move, and we'll basically stick our hands inside of her and put chains around the calf's feet and pull the calf—essentially, yeah, pull the calf out.

Wow. Now, how does, how do you know they've been trying to have a calf for two hours? I mean, are they hunched over? Are they laying down? What are they doing?

Yeah, so you'll, what I usually do is I mark down the time when I see them start calving, which will be when there's a water sack out or they'll have a tail kink, they'll start to look super uncomfortable, and from that time I'll say, okay, it's 10 o 'clock.

If it's noon now and she's still trying, she's, maybe she's laid down and had some contractions and gotten back up, laid down again, had some contractions, and there's no progress being made, you want to see progress being made.

If there's no progress being made, it's time to get her in, pull that calf. And 90 percent of the time it's just a big calf that she can't, you know, 80, 90, 100-pound calf that she can't have on her own, so.

And so the calf comes out. How soon does the calf then, how soon are they able to stand up and, you know, wobble around and then start walking?

I'd say a lot of times it's right away. That's the amazing part that, you know, within, you want to see within 30 minutes that they are up and sucked. And that's, it's really cool to just see the instincts of both the cow and the calf that are both completely necessary for the survival of the calf.

You know, the cow will help the calf suck, the calf will get up right away and start looking to nurse, the cow will lick the calf off. And so where we are in Wyoming, it's, it's, you can have nights that calves are born that, you know, it's in negatives.

It's negative two, negative three degrees. And that calf's still able to survive as long as that cow starts licking it off, gets it dry, the calf gets up, the calf sucks, and they're good to go.

So how would you explain the evolutionary process?

Yeah. How did that come about? What was the steps that, yeah, these instincts.

So to reign you in, what'd you say? How'd you say it? Did you say something, reigned in? How did we get on the reigning in part? I can't remember. It doesn't matter. But the reason why I have Dawson...

Gave God the reigns. Yes, that's right. Do you think he gave you the ability to have the reigns, or do you think you allowed him to do it?

I think, I think he made that decision, not me. Yeah.

Well, we are Calvinist on the show, so I want to make sure we... So I wanted to have Dawson on the show because Dawson is dating my daughter, and I thought, you know what? Here's an exceptional young man, and he has done this the right way, pretty much to a T.

Maybe his motives haven't always been great, who knows? I mean, you can't do anything perfectly as a sinner saved by grace. But from my perspective, he's done things the right way, and I thought, we should talk about this on the radio, because many of you listeners have daughters and sons, and you want to teach a son to date the right way.

I taught Luke that. And then you teach daughters how they need to respond to the man who wants to court, to date, etc. And so let's go from when you met Gracie. Before that, what was your thought process, Dawson, on waiting for God's right woman to come into your life, to seek her out?

What was your strategy before you met Gracie? Yeah. I guess I just told myself that I was going to be patient and wait for a woman that was seeking God with all her heart and not willing to compromise any part of her faith for the sake of feelings or, you know, not let her feelings dictate anything in a relationship.

And I knew kind of, you know, how that would present itself, and I was waiting for that girl, and I thought, you know, if God wants to put her in my life, He will, and I don't necessarily have to go out looking.

I can be actively looking, but at the same time not looking in the wrong places and just waiting for God to bring the right girl into my life, which ended up being at church, funny enough. Well, what happened was, Gracie and her sister.

Maddie, my two daughters, were helping a friend with, I don't know what they call it, they're running recon, they're helping who knows what, but their friend Suze was going to go meet a young man that was kind of set up through church, admissions, this, that, and the other, and they just wanted to go support.

Riding shotgun? What would the term be? I don't know. But they were supporting. And so then they went up to Wyoming, and they're hiking and doing this, that, and the other, and so they went to church that Sunday.

What's the name of your church again? Cornerstone. I thought it was Jehovah's Witness. Oh, sorry, Latter-day Saint. Yeah, yeah, Latter-day Saint. Sometimes when people say, oh, you're a pastor, what's the name of your church?

And I say, the Church of Latter-day Saints. And so one of the things that I think is lacking these days is the initiative of the man. The Bible says if you find a wife, you find a good thing, and these days with social media, I think men now are afraid to approach a young lady.

I think they want to be maybe set up, or they want to have a swipe right, or something like that. But it doesn't seem like there's initiative. My daughters would say, like Maddie, for instance, she would go to some venue for a concert or whatever, and no men come up to her and say, oh, I noticed you from across the bar or the venue, and you're pretty, can I buy you a drink?

They don't do that anymore. They're passive. They're effeminate men, and they're not initiating things. And so Gracie and Maddie and her friend were at church that Sunday, and you saw Gracie, and so what'd you do?

Well, I saw Gracie, and she had a jean jacket on with an American flag on the back. I know that jean jacket. So I actually only saw her on her back when I walked down the aisle to sit next to my parents, and I said, man, I wonder what she looks like, and I kind of peeked out the side of my eye as I sat down, and anyway, after church, I...

Do you remember what the sermon was about, or were you thinking about a girl?

Oh, I have no clue. No way I'm going to remember that. On the way out, I noticed her, and it's funny enough, my dad looked at me and he said, you want to talk to that girl, don't you? I said, oh yeah, I do.

And so I waited outside the bathroom, and she went into the bathroom. I was waiting outside to talk to her when she came out, and she came out of the bathroom talking to my mom. She was. She was talking to my mom when she walked out.

And so then what'd you say? What happened next?

Yeah, I found out that there was a hiking trip planned for the day, and it was with my buddy and Suze, and Gracie's friend Suze, and so I went over to my buddy. Anyway, I can get in on this hiking trip, and he was like, yeah, yeah, you know, maybe we can do something.

That wasn't a good enough answer for me. I had to be sure that I was on that hiking trip, so I ran outside and tracked Gracie down, and I said, hey, what do you think about me coming on that hiking trip with you guys?

And she seemed all about it, and so I went home, and I laid face down on my bed, and I prayed, and I hoped that I'd get a message from somebody about that afternoon. Yeah.

And you did. I did. Now, your parents, I know they've got other jobs, but do they give tours in Yellowstone? Is that correct?

Yes. So both my parents, in the summertime, they give tours of Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, and in the wintertime, my dad drives a school bus, and my mom works in a t-shirt shop.

Okay, so you probably could have said, by the way, I'd love to come on this hiking trip with you, and my parents are tour guides, and I know a little bit something about that. Did you do that?

I did not, but yeah, that probably would have helped me out a little bit.

So you see a girl, you go and approach her. It's a good place to meet a girl. It doesn't mean if they're at church, they're Christians, but it's better than meeting somebody right down at the casino. Correct.

Correct. And by the way, one of the reasons why we're doing this is Dawson flew out last night. We talked on the phone some a few weeks ago, and he said, what are you doing May 8th through 10th? Will you be around?

I said, yes, I am going to be around. He said, I'd like to fly out and see you. I said, okay, I know what this is about. This would be great. I wanted to say, you don't have to fly out. Let's just talk on the phone.

No problem. I know what you're going to ask. But I thought, no, you've got to be a man. And so he flew out last night, and we had dinner, and asked me a question that we'll talk about in a little bit.

But I like it, Dawson, that you're aggressive, that you're an initiator, that you think, I'm the man, and I need to go find a wife, win a wife. And so I really appreciate that about you. So you went on the hike, and then I think you talked the girls into staying another day, and you went to stay at your mom's house, and let the girls stay at your house, something like that.

Yes, sir. Okay, good. So you were really working it?

I said, I got to do everything I can, and then leave it up to the Lord after that.

How did you get your house clean? Do you always keep your house clean, or are you going to let the girls come and stay at your house?

We called in the cavalry to get my house clean. Let's just say that. All hands on deck, let's get this house clean. Let's get the dishes up in the cabinet.

Asking Permission to Date and Testing the Match

So not that many days after that, you were talking to Gracie. Gracie was here in Massachusetts. She's got a remote job, so she comes and goes. And how did it work out. Where you flew out here so that you could ask me to date Gracie?

How did that all work?

Oh, yeah. Funny enough, I rarely get days off at work, and my boss said, hey, if you want to go see this girl in San Diego, then you should go fly to San Diego. And funny enough, Gracie happened to be in Massachusetts with you guys that weekend.

And I said, heck, I wonder if she'd have me in Massachusetts, and we'll just meet her parents and get this thing started. So I FaceTimed, I called you guys and talked to you guys on the phone, and I said, what do you think about me coming to Massachusetts?

She was all about it. And that was 11 o 'clock on a Thursday night. We decided that. And so I drove through the night to, where did I go? Bozeman? Bozeman, Montana. Five hours? Yeah, four hours. I left at midnight.

I got there at 3 a .m. I slept on the floor of the airport and then took a flight out Friday morning here. Standby. Yeah. Yeah, on one of the flights.

On standby, that's right, yeah. And so all this to say, dear listeners, you see where this is going, how you want to train sons to do things, and that is, hey, if I'm interested, I better act on it, right?

Let's get going. I need to be the initiator. It's not up to Gracie to make the phone call, hey, would you come out here? It's up to the man to be the initiator. So I was very impressed that you flew out.

We hung out for a concert, the Morrissey concert, but that was canceled. Can I say Morrissey concert on this Christian show? And so how long after that then did you call me and express your desire to date Gracie?

That would have been the day, I think it was the day after that trip, it would have been a Monday. It was the 22nd, I believe, of September.

Was that, yeah, was that the question, can I date your daughter?

Yes sir, yeah, I mean, yeah.

Okay, so then I went into my whole spiel, which isn't truly a spiel, but it's what I say to young men who are interested in my daughters. Same thing I did with Marty before he married Haley. I said, I'd love to have you date my daughter, I have a few questions for you.

So I asked you about your testimony, you talked to me about how the Lord saved you, what kind of church you were going to. I knew you were a man, I knew you had always been a man. I knew that you were, you know, aggressive, that is, the initiator in all the good ways.

And so I said something to the effect, yes you can, but I'd like to every few weeks on the phone talk, we'll go over a couple books together, theology books, it'll be kind of a discipleship relationship.

If this goes well and you get married, great, we'll get to know each other better and we'll learn together. And I've learned some things over the years that I'd love to teach you, and I'm sure you could teach me things too.

And you said, fine, I will do that. And I think the first book I gave you was a book I wrote. I needed to sell one more copy about the sovereignty of God, because I said, and I believe this, and I think you parents that are working through this need to do the same thing, I don't want my daughter to be married to a man that doesn't trust in the sovereignty of God over everything.

Over every molecule, over every cancer atom, everything. I want them to trust in the sovereignty of God, because there are going to be difficulties in life, and I want that man to be able to lead my daughter to say, sweetheart, this hurts, it's horrible, tragedy, we're sorry, sad, crying, but we're going to trust the Lord.

Job said, even though he slay me, yet I will trust in him. Right? You lose a mom or a dad, sickness, there's a miscarriage, we have to trust in the sovereignty of God. So I gave you the book on the sovereignty of God.

So we would talk about that, and you said, no problem. And so we were just discussing parameters. Do you have health insurance? Can you provide for her? Right? There's no sense dating, and then fall in love, and then I can't support my wife, and so, you know, yes sir, I have health insurance, and I have a job, and then I knew this question I had to ask, and I thought, this seems too good to be true, right?

The Lord is going to answer our prayers, certainly, short of the Lord's return, for a godly spouse, for Maddie and for Gracie. He's answered that prayer for Luke with his wife Hannah, and Haley with her husband Marty, and we see the Lord's hand, and we just entrust our souls and our children's souls and marriages to the Lord, and I thought, but I got to ask this question, because it's just the question I have to ask.

And so then I said, Dawson, I need to know if you are looking at pornography, and you said no, and I wanted to just cheer. I would just go, because I thought, well, because if you would have said yes, I still struggled with looking.

I think you said, no, I don't, and I have some accountability partners, etc., etc., and so I was so happy, because if you would have said yes, I would have said, do you know what? I really like you, and maybe after six months of not looking, call me and we'll talk about it.

That's what I would have said. So I said, so you have my permission. So then I walked out of the—I was in the bedroom, and there was a bunch of Gracie's friends were there, and Kim was there, and all these, and they're all like, what happened?

And so it was really a sweet time. But my point is, if you're listening dads, make sure you're a dad for your daughter. Make sure you're helping her, make sure you're protecting her, make sure you're—I mean, short of trusting in the Lord, this is the most important decision you'll ever make as a person, right?

Who you're going to marry. This is important, and so you need a dad to be a dad, a mom to be a mom, church people involved, friends involved, et cetera. And so when was that? Was that back in September, October, November?

When was it? An end of September. Okay. And so we also had a conversation about boundaries, and premarital sex, and making out, and all these other—did we not talk about that? Yes, sir. Yeah. And so what Gracie did is she flew back up, I think, to Jackson Hole, and the flight got canceled, or there was too many people on the way back, and she gets some $1 ,500 voucher, so she had lots of other opportunities to fly up there, right?

And so, what did you tell Gracie when you had the conversation about, you know, this is what we should do, this is what we shouldn't do, here's how we want to approach this to honor the Lord? What was the conversation like?

Yeah, I just said, you know, if we're going to put God before both of us in this relationship, then, you know, one of the main things we're going to talk about is purity and setting boundaries. And to me, the most important thing was, you know, as a man, I'm aware that, you know, if you flirt with sexual sin, then, you know, you're going to fall into the temptation.

You're going—you know, you have to flee from it. As the Bible says, to flee from sexual temptation. And so, we tried to set boundaries that were, you know, not even knocking on the door of anything. We were just staying as far away from it as possible, and not putting ourselves—how do we set boundaries that don't even put ourselves in situations where we can fall into temptation, I guess,.

Was how we went about it. Good. And one of the things the girls would always say if they went on a date, they would say, and he didn't even pray before our meal. So, would you guys pray together? Would you pray before meals?

How did that all work? Because she never said,.

Daddy didn't even pray. Right, yeah, yeah. We just prioritize, you know, praying. For the majority of our relationship, it has been long distance. We've been able to visit each other quite a bit, but we usually call each other in the evenings.

I get to work super early in the morning, so before we go to bed at night, and before we hung up on the phone, we just pray.

Together. Nice, nice. So, things were going well. You came to Massachusetts for Christmas time, right after Christmas. What a great trip. That was a great trip. That was fun. You have been to San Diego to meet my other children and hang out, and did you like San Diego better than you thought you'd like it?

I definitely did. And you're a surfer. Yes, sir. By the way, when my daughters stayed at your place that first visit, we were almost thinking somehow you have been stalking Gracie, saw her stuff on social media, because it was the same kind of vibe at your house that my daughters would have, from here's the surfboard to here's, I'm just making this part up, John Wayne, Johnny Cash, whatever you had decorated at your house, the girls had at their house, and they were thinking, wait a second, he somehow knows what they've got in their house.

So, anyway, today's No Compromise Radio. We're talking to Dawson Driscoll, and Dawson then thought, you know what, let's fast forward again. Oh, no, I know what I wanted to say. I said to Dawson in the midst of the dating process, and we would talk, because I know his pastor, his pastor was one of my students at TMS, and I said, do you mind if I call your pastor and ask about you?

And you said, sure, you can. Did you think that was weird? You can be honest. No, I, you know,.

If I was a father, I'd probably want to ask the same question, so I thought that was a good question to ask, and a good thing to do. So I called his pastor, and he said, run. But you asked me, you said, are your ears burning?

That's what you said when you called me back.

So, just trying to do diligence. My wife, Kim, went there to Jackson Hole, met your parents, and you know, your sister's there, and her husband, and children. So anyway, just trying to do diligence. Gracie got to visit you quite a bit, you got to go to San Diego, etc., came out for Christmas, and things have been progressing well.

And so then you, a couple weeks ago, called me, and you told me, Dawson, that you don't remember what we talked about. We were talking about Bible things, indicative, imperative, but you said you didn't remember any of it because you were waiting to ask me a question.

Oh, that's right. So he asked me the question, and by the way, listeners, I think that was really the right thing to do. I'd like to come out and talk with you. And so, I didn't say anything to Gracie, or Maddie, or Haley, trying to keep it top secret.

I didn't know if he was going to say anything, but I had told Dawson before, and I'm sure his parents had told him, that this is a real question when you ask someone, may I marry your daughter? So often, it's already been decided, the guy's already asked the girl, now he's just kind of asking a blessing of the dad.

Like, you know, we're going to get married, can I have your blessing? But it's a real question, right? The Bible says that the dads are the leaders of the family. When I walk a daughter down the aisle, who gives this woman to be married to this man?

I do, because I was her head, and protector, and provider, and dad, and now I'm handing off my daughter, literally, to the man of God's own choosing, and then now he is the leader. He is in charge. He will protect her, and provide for her, and lay his life down for her.

And so, it's a real question. So, you flew out after working 40-some days in cabbing season, and then I picked you up at the airport shuttle,.

And we went and had dinner. Then what happened? Well, I waited a few minutes. I figured I better knock this out at the start of our trip, or else I'm going to be not knowing what we say for the. So I said, I think I told you, I might as well ask this question now.

We were at the restaurant Kava, so from now on we're always going to have a special spot in our hearts for Kava. That's right, that's right. Or as we say in New England, Kava. And so, you approached it that way, and then what did you say to me?

Well, I said, you know, as I've gotten to know your daughter, Gracie. Sir. Sir, yeah. Well, sir. You know, it's been clear to me that God has placed her in my life, in his sovereignty, and in his grace put her in my life.

She's this really amazing, amazing, larger-than-life woman with this big personality that I've just come to care for so much. She's just fully dedicated to the Lord. We're both seeking the Lord, and we're seeking the Lord together.

I just have this desire to do life with her. I want to do everything with her. And as you said, I could do it without her, but I don't want to. I want to do it with her. And so, then I said, can I marry your daughter?

It was crowded at this restaurant, all this stuff going on. We had our bowls of Mediterranean hummus or whatever was in that thing. And so, I think I said, Dawson, something to the effect, you know, I want to answer that question, but, you know, or yes, but with a few caveats.

I think that's what I said, didn't I? What went through your mind when I said that?

Well, I was hoping that the caveats didn't involve me waiting any longer.

So, I said things like, and this is just, obviously, if you're a dad, you can do it your way, but I said, these are the, you know, yes, but with a few caveats. I don't remember the order, but I said, I just don't want you to ever say in the midst of any kind of trouble and trials and difficulty, I don't want you to ever say the word divorce, right?

That's a word that we're not going to say in marriage. We are going to keep our word. You're a man's man. You've demonstrated that by your initiative, by your godliness, by setting boundaries, by calling me, by coming out, talking in person, etc.

So continue, what I meant was, continue that when you're married and just be a man. And when you say, till death do us part, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, I'm going to keep my word.

I'm going to honor my word no matter what, to my own hurt, to my own failings, to my own suffering, I will never leave you nor forsake you. And you talked about, that's picture of Christ in the Church, right?

In Ephesians chapter 5, Jesus loves the bride to the very end. And so that was my first caveat, and you're like, yes sir, I won't say divorce. I said something like, later I said, don't forget to get life insurance, which I told Luke, right?

You get married, get life insurance. It cost a couple hundred dollars for a quarter of a million dollars worth of that, so that's a good way to love your wife. I said, I want to make sure that in your family, the children and your wife would never say, are we going to church today, honey?

It's which church we're going to, maybe you're out of town, but means of grace, preaching of the gospel, sitting underneath God's Word, that's something that's a non-negotiable. And you said, yes sir.

What else did I say? What were my other caveats? I've already forgotten. It was a short night last night, we stayed up late talking. A bit of a blur. Yeah, that's right. What would I say? Probably something about, I don't even know what the other ones were, but anyway, we went through it all, no problem, and I said, you have my blessing.

I know I had some teary eyes of joy and thankfulness, and I expressed my thanks to you and my admiration for the way you've done things. And I thought, you know what, I have three daughters and one son, and if I live long enough, I think I'll have four daughters and four sons.

And so I thought, I'm going to have another son. So I don't know when you guys are going to get married. Those details will come forth shortly. I'm not going to play this until this is all done, but this is all top secret at the moment.

We are recording this May 8th, something, May 7th, May 9th, and then probably within a week, you're going to ask Gracie to marry her.

That's right. Next Sunday is a big day.

And so do you want to tell us what's going to happen? Because it already will have happened by then. And by the way, if something happens and you die today or whatever, I won't play this.
