Food & Growth - Part 1 — John Follette

You are here in my presence, and you've come again to gather about thy word. And we have heard this morning, and we hear it continuing, that this is the food which thou hast provided for us while we tarry here on the earth, just a little while, that thou hast provided for our welfare and well-being.

And we want to be intelligent about it so that we may cooperate with thee and work with thee. Therefore we ask you that as we sit in thy presence, you will rest us. It's tiresome to be here, it's warm, and everybody would like to rest, but we have the meeting.

And so we pray that if you're present with us to help us, we may listen and receive from thy hand our daily portion. Place the bread of life to us, that thou seest we may meet. For Jesus' sake. Amen. This is just a delightful afternoon to rest.

The Christian’s Food and Spiritual Growth

Nobody knows it better than I. Oh, wouldn't it be lovely to get the anxiousness out of me straight and just rest. But you know you can't do things like that. You have to go to the work, to the work. So I am going to the work this afternoon with my sleeves rolled up.

And you're very kind to let me be informal. Method of delivery is very informal. I have no special technique. You wouldn't know I've ever had training in a college and a seminary besides. But that's so far back, I always think that's a little after the Civil War period or someplace when I lived there.

I don't know how old I am anyway. And I've quite forgotten. Move along. And so this afternoon I want to continue the talk which we have had since yesterday. Now when we get into a field of this kind, we can't get out in a minute or an hour or a day.

We're dealing with this question of the food adequate for the Christian. Being able to partake of it. Then also the gradation that is recognized in the word of God. A gradation in the people who partake of the food and also in the food itself.

We must keep that in mind so that we move with God and not just take things for granted because it's in the Bible and we go poking along on our own little way. Sometimes we wake up at the end of the way and find we're clean off the beans.

Well, that doesn't help us. We must keep in mind with what God has given us in the word that we are all to teach along that line because we feel that we're saved, consecrated to the Lord, and receive the baptism of the Spirit.

Let's build it up real tight and have all the gifts and free transit and fixed visions. By that time, you're completely... By that time, you're almost hopeless to do anything good. If you don't believe that, let me ask you if you ever noticed something in the word of God.

I read to you this morning how God has placed in the church, the teachers and vendors, He's placed in the church all of these instruments. He's called them gifts, they're personality gifts. Now, it only takes one evangelist out in the field to get a hold of the last sheep and bring them in.

An evangelist, one evangelist can go out there and bring in the last. Well, now let me tell you something. After you get that poor last person in here and get a really good story and fill it with the Spirit and a few extra blessings on top of it, it takes five evangelists just to do everything with them after you've got them in.

Did you ever notice that? It's true. Because He said He has placed all the religious in the church, not in the word of God. The evangelist is the only one who hasn't been placed in the world. All the other workers and all these gifts, He said, He has placed them in the church for the edification of the church, for the building up of the church, for the perfection of the faith.

All that marvelous, glorious work is in the church by all these other instruments. And only one can serve. Well, I have found it out. You travel with me and I'll show you some things that are really interesting.

One evangelist can get a man saved and baptize in the Spirit and five men can do anything with him after you get him there. If that's true, it's true. It takes about five instruments and God can't do anything with a man after you've got him saved and filled him with the Spirit.

That's a very strange thing, but there it is. And you notice He placed him in the church. He did not place these gifts in the world. He placed it in the church and specifically says it's for the edification of that church.

It's the edification of that God. For its culture, its building, its growth. And it takes all these instruments to work on it. Well, I know that very well. Having traveled around and visited assemblies and churches and places, I say it surely does.

You see, the impact of life and light and truth is so terrific on some hearts and lives that it almost sets them besides themselves. They are so overwhelmed with the marvels and the wonders of glory. Oh, they get so... well, you can't do anything with them for quite a while.

Their spirits are too agitated. They're too vibrant. It's really true. You cannot... you can't do very much with them until some of that is exhausted and reduced so that it comes back to a normal swing.

A normal poise of spirit. And it takes some people a few years to attain that. It actually does. Their temperament, their disposition, the way they react to truth is so terrific that sometimes they swing off on a pendulum here and then they swing there.

How many have ever seen an old clock go like that quite a while before it maintains its equilibrium? Well, that's like people are. So he says, I have put about five instruments in the church to take care of these swinging instruments.

Well, we have to be encouraged in that to think he thinks enough of us to do it. So he says, we're graded. He told us that. We heard that this morning. We start as little babies. Nothing but little babies.

Well, here one crying. Now, how much do you think that little baby knows about this world? Yeah, he says. You hear it? He's telling you about how much he knows of this world. And yet, how many know he's a legitimate, good, lovely, proper, darling, sweet, grand baby, isn't he?

Well, how much does he know? Well, keep your analogy. God is just like that in the things of God. When we are raised in Christ, he doesn't expect us to know what we should, 30, 40, or 50 years later. He doesn't expect it.

But he does expect the little baby to grow, to come into its growth normally and naturally, passing through all of the periods that we find in the development of a child. And he has something in the Word of God for every part of that.

At every period in which you find yourself moving, he will have something in the Word of God of truth, which will help you, which will hold you, feed you, sustain you. When you're a baby, when you're a new child, when you're a growing child, your adolescent period of spiritual development, think of the adolescent period of a Christian, in his adolescence.

How many can see him? Yes, you can. If you know anything about him. Or are they all just the nicest things that you ever did see in the world? No. If you keep your eyes open, you'll see some differences.

Then how many find them gradually moving out of that into a steadier sense of maturity and understanding? And finally, they develop into fathers and mothers in history. Develop into spiritual leaders.

Someone who has lived long enough and understands the things of God enough to give advice and counsel and direction. You can't do that as a baby. You can't do that even as an adolescent. You can't do that even in the beginning of your maturity.

You're only feeding your way. Here I am at this age, ready to be taken home, and I'm only beginning to commence, to get ready to find out the first things of it. And I've been this for years. Just finding out, and no one knows it better than I.

Touching these fringes of the reality of spiritualness. Just the fringes. Just little gleams, little glimpses of the things that God has for us. They belong to us. We are made for them. The whole structural law of your being and my being is so constructed and made in God's economy and thought that it will adapt itself freely to it if you will be exposed long enough.

If in all sincerity you dare to expose yourself to it, you will find that there is something in you. God has already placed it there in this new creation, in this new order, which will flow to it. How many of you are even hungry for it?

You're even hungry for it. I've had people come and say, I've had faith, baptized in the Spirit, and I've had all of that blessed. And I'm still more hungry now than I was when I got it. Now what's the matter with me?

Nothing, I said. You're coming along in quite a normal pattern. ...has been satisfied merely to receive a few interesting experiences, which are God-given and helpful. If you are parked there, there's not much hope of ever getting people on.

No, there should be a restlessness in you lest you park on. Use it and go right along. Use it and go right along. Don't be afraid that if you go along, you won't get any more. You will get much more. You'll get much more, but you have to learn as a little child.

Spiritual Maturity and the Development of the Believer

And his conduct is just the same. You watch a growing child, how often it is hard for him, even in his adolescence, to let up on some of his childhood capers. You know, he likes to get in the cupboard and cook a jar like he did when he was six years old, and here he is 18.

Ever heard of people like that? Those hangovers, you know, of the child still manifest when he's 18 and 20 and 21. If you don't believe it, watch people as we see them every day in these newspapers. People who've developed into men and women are quite intelligent.

They're nothing but little children. You know? Don't you know? What's the matter with these people fighting, quarreling together and yammering and shooting and all? They're nothing but little children who have never learned control.

They have never learned anything about their emotional life and what it meant. Never. It has just run wild with them, and so when they get to be 20, 30, 40, 50 years old, emotionally, they are not matured at all.

They are yet a little child manifesting little childish secrets. They'll have it when they're grown, only they don't get exhibited. You know when you're little children and you go, yeah, they're little child, yeah, yeah.

Well, how many of those great people do that inside? Don't they smile? All the time, don't they smile? All the time, they simply smile. Well, that's the way people are. Sure. Only they have grown up long enough now to disguise and wear their masks.

They have discovered that life has provided quite a basket full of masks which we may use occasionally and sometimes we do. But what I'm getting at is this. There should be a normal development of your whole personality, your spirit, soul, body, your whole being, every part of you should come under the tuition, under the teaching, under the tutelage of the Spirit of God so that the whole being moves up under the power of truth, sloughing off and dropping off all of the entanglement which impedes the way and stifles the Spirit to be taken care of.

Milk, Meat, and Strong Meat in Scripture

Now we're going to talk a little bit about this food question. Well, the Lord has told us that the food is in three general classification such as milk, meat and strong meat and the Old Testament will touch with that this afternoon.

I want to tell you something about the manna and the corn, the old corn and all the provision which we find in the Old Testament too. God is very keen on this question of diet. It isn't anything new. There are a lot of food faddists today and people who are interested in diet but God was much more interested in diet than you think.

He's been interested in diet a long, long, long time. They knew it. But I'm glad he's an authority on it so we not be afraid. I'm not talking now about drinking lemon juice or something of that kind. I'm talking in spiritual terms.

He's a great dietician. He understands the mechanism of my spiritual being and the food which is necessary and adequate. And therefore he says that at times there is milk, meat, strong meat. To use an illustration I want to go back to the Old Testament and use an illustration which is given to us by the children of Israel in their pilgrimage from Egypt to Canaan land.

And in that dramatic picture historic, really historically and naturally dramatically so, true but all the time that's going on God is telling us something. Now how I know that is because of a scripture verse he opened up to me one time when I was reading over in Corinthians Paul was elaborating on the life of the children of Israel and their mission and their work elaborating on that and then he made this little remark as he was teaching Now all these things and he was rehearsing the dealings of God with the children of Israel he had been dealing with that.

Now all these things happened unto them for examples or in another word could be used as types entertainment? No. They are written for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come. Now that encouraged me very much because I had been detecting and sensing in all these historic pictures and dramas and conversations and types I had been discovering some lovely beautiful spiritual reality all hidden away underneath and I thought is it right that we should go in there and lift that up out of its setting and pull it all apart and see the lovely spiritual food and blessing and illumination that's there is it right?

And the Lord directed me to this and he said yes, here it is all these things that have happened in that Old Testament they are only types and pictures for our admonition. Why? Because the same dramatization is going on in your heart and in mine.

Israel’s Exodus as a Picture of the Christian Life

If you've never found that you've had in Egypt you've lost your geography book. How many have found you had in Egypt? How many know that Egypt is very near? I was in Egypt last summer but I have an Egypt that's continually.

Egypt isn't on a map. How many of you know that you have the children of Israel moving around in there? Have you ever heard this? Traffic? Yes. How many have ever had to cross the Red Sea? Have you ever found a journey?

Because all of those things are just like a little draught but they're all the time inside in our spiritual life the counterpart of it the counterpart the analogy is that we will have the same tooth. Again I only spoke once on the household of faith that people were scared when I got up in Jerusalem I said how many of you know you have a homo bethany in your heart today?

Well they thought I was sort of fanatical anyway they thought now what is he going to drag out? Well I said if you have lived long enough you will find that you have the homo bethany in your heart. You have Mary you have Mary you have Lazarus.

You have Martha. You have the household. You have all of that but some of you have never discovered it. You've never made friends with it. You don't know how to interpret it. Sometimes they have been bustling around in your experience and didn't know who they were about the words.

They are all here in the words. But they are all here in your spirit too. And if we are quiet enough and walk along with God he will talk to us some very modest and wonderful things hidden away under very prosaic everyday commonplace doing and while we read but you know we deserve something of spiritual value in there.

And God is infinite. He said that is all given to us for our admonition. Well then I want to ask how often have I been admonished by this story by that story. How much have I been admonished in my spiritual welfare by reading this or that.

Well it's all for us. It's all for us everything of it. But you see we are sort of stupid in our flesh. And that's why the spirit has come. He has come. And when he has come he will lead us into all truth.

When was the last time the Holy Spirit has taken you by the hand gently and led you into the word right through some story and given you a lovely opening of spiritual value. Real, beautiful, wonderful reaching.

That's his ministry. That's his ministry. When he comes he will do that. Well and I say how long have you been baptized. 14 years. But how many openings. I don't know anything about that. I praise God.

Well they praise God too. But you should keep opening even though homie leads you a little way. Let him open and you know be so refreshing. And I'll tell you something else you will never forget a thing that the Holy Spirit has made real in your heart and mind.

You never will because it's a direct contact a direct opening a direct revelation of life and truth. And if the Holy Spirit can get you still enough and open enough to give you you know it's so charged.

It's so sweet. Oh yes I can remember in my beginning when God began to illuminate the word to me my first little findings. Oh I thought they were so marvelous. I thought oh isn't that wonderful. That's been in the Bible all this time.

And I never knew it. Well I want to say there's 10 ,000 more things there stand still. Maybe you'll see two of them ammunition. Therefore when I look at the children of Israel in just this one aspect concerning their diet and that they're eating as we're dealing with this morning's thought of eating eating eating, diet.

When I look at them I come into quite a revelation of truth and I find it's the parallel of my own heart and life. And yours too. Now to begin with we'll take the children of Israel. I like to start with them down in Egypt because they're going to have a long sojourn.

I suppose when I talk over here you can't hear me that's going to be very bad. Can you hear me now? I'm honest about it so if I stand here and talk I'd rather just do something here with this blackboard to help me.

There's nothing picturesque about it. I'm an artist but I'm not showing any kind of art effect here. Come up to my home and I'll show you through. But then this is called the center of of the the general plan for Israel.

We'll call it Egypt out here and here we are in bondage but you see the children of Israel were not brought forth. God didn't call them and say your destiny is Egypt. He called them that they might come way up here into the land now that that's their destiny.

That's where he's going to take them. But he finds them in this garden down here in Egypt in great bondage. It's quite a trip. We're going to take them out of Egypt over here into the wilderness and then finally we're going to get over to Jordan.

That's where the Red Sea. It's real geography. How many know you've got all this geography in Egypt. Yes you have. You've got all this geography in Egypt and I want you to be able to recognize it. So when God begins to work for you you'll say oh that's Egypt.

Then you'll say thank you Lord. And you'll know just exactly what it is. Because that's the way he will do it. So back here we're going to get down you and your imagination here. I'm not sure this is Egypt.

You can see on the side but here we have the children of Israel in bondage. Now let's remember something. There's always a destination and there's always an objective. Now with the children of Israel God has called them and he has promised them something.

He has promised that through them he will bring Jesus Christ the Redeemer of the world to do some wonderful maneuvering with them in their historic moving. Because it's all going to be a picture lesson a picture lesson for a spiritual teacher.

This is not your real home. This is where you belong. I was making sure the people who live in Gaia Egypt I have brought you thus far and I'm going to bring you way up here. Your land is the land that I have come to.

I'll come to you. But I'm not going to say Lord right now. Where am I. We're almost three centuries in here. I'm going to take you into an idea of faith. They always disturb me because they're so funny.

They always say believe in God. He will do all things. And then they come clashing at me and pounding at me. God was able to stand with me. I said I know he's able but get me in line with the people. I'm not talking about what we do at school.

They always tell me what he's able to do. How many ever heard that. I've heard some preachers in the back ramble down the pathway. He's able. He's everybody over here. He's able. He's able. He's able.

He's able. He's able. He's able he's able. It would be refreshing. But some can't learn. They have to go and have somebody jump up down in the air and say God is able to do a lot of things that he doesn't do.

Have you thought that out. I have too. He said he was. It hasn't anything to do with his able at all. It has to do with his purpose. He's holding around and trying to build up your faith by saying I don't believe.

You don't know faith. God you never get anywhere in the kingdom that way at all. Those religions have to make you feel real religious. Oh you're really religious. And it doesn't get you anywhere. It's all over the next day.

You're just not in this country. I know better. So they do that way get anything. You forget it. Well I didn't. Well are you satisfied. So well try it there. And then what did he do. He let you exhaust yourself so that the spirit may take over and do the thing that God wants to do.

He will not allow flesh to have the glory the glories of what the holy ghost must suggest first. It's a natural thing from other days that he's a very interesting character tells you just bushels of things.

If you read it. So here they're comparing us in this world. You get it. How many know this old world is in Egypt. We are born here in captivity. We're born here as slaves in Egypt. That's why Paul don't get under the power of Egypt's philosophy or teaching that is the world spirit not just tobacco cigarettes and feathers.

He's not talking about all that funny stuff. He's talking about the principles of life now he says in Egypt that's the world. If you're not careful your life will be shaped and ruined and covered and tied along by the philosophy and teaching that the world has to offer.

And the world when they do judge things they cannot produce life. They cannot produce anything that will ruin things now that is where the children of Israel are that's where people are in the flesh they are born in this world.

They are born naturally in Egypt. They're born there no need to cry about it. That's where we were all born. How do you know we were all born jailbirds didn't you know that yes we were all born jailbirds in Israel in prison houses and we will come and set our free we will come jail because of that because we are now all the while we're thinking of the Egyptian guy in hope of the government and power.

We can patch it up, kick the leg, but that is not their business. They are not made for that. You and I were not born into this world to live in the world under the power of its limitations. Man is not to live by bread alone, but by every word that is received, at least in spiritual adjustment purpose.

We were made for that. We were not made to live in the world, governed by the world, do the best you can, hope I'll get to heaven, and cry a little late and early tonight. You say, that's not the point.

No, that's not the point. He says, you have been born and brought forth in your prison house in Egypt, in a land of darkness, in this world, this whole philosophy is wrong. These people are wrong. They are not in the corrupt intellectual grasp that humanity has.

Our best philosophers that we've had, Plato and Aristotle, all of those. Every one of them comes with the truth. The roots of all their thinking are from the earth. For their thinking all come from the earth.

The earth is cursed. How can a cursed thing give life? It can't. How can a cursed thing give life and truth and wisdom, direction? It can't. So it says, don't get under the power. Now another thing that he's told us not to do, is to try to reform this whole world, and make it a lovely place for the Lord to come to, for our millennia.

I mean, a lot of people are off on that thing. Put up your hands if you know that. Well, I wish I had some church history with you. You need some good teaching, dear, dear, dear. I wish I could have you about a month with just some simple teaching, a discrepancy between pre-millennial and post-millennial teaching.

How many know a difference between that? Well, that gives you a little weight, dear. The post-millennial people, our churches are full. Our colleges, our universities, our seminaries, they're full. What is it?

The teaching of philosophy, that the Christian impact of truth has been brought by Jesus Christ. Now the church is to take that up, and convert the world, and bring the world to some kind of order, so that Jesus could come and reign.

How many of that will pull out? Why, it would be such a, smell of garlic. But how you know, it's just going to be garlic anyway. Some of you don't want to talk about them. Never mind. Say amen once in a while.

May the Lord bless you. I've seen some of the analogy. Are you getting it at all? You get it? I want you to see that. Those who can't, just be very patient, and you'll get your bread by and by. But not now.

To redeem Egypt. He's never asked it to form any society to take care of that guy. He says, I'm going to take you out of Egypt. You don't belong in Egypt. And so he comes along, and he brings us out of Egypt.

Well, here is the Red Sea. We came up through the Red Sea on a trip from Libya one time, and the captain was very gracious. He knew we had a lot of American Christian workers on, and he would show us different things along the way.

The narrowest passage where the children of Israel were supposed to have passed from Egypt over into Arabia. And another thing that was wonderful to me. You remember, for their protection, the man made a cloud by day and a light by night, forming a supernatural thing?

Well, he didn't give us a light by night, but you know, that whole trip coming up the Red Sea, and it was terrifically hot. A cloud. I think he did it celestially. He actually did it. There was a strange cloud that fell and kept these hot burning rays of the sun off of them until we split up to the next trip.

Supernatural Deliverance Through Christ

And he raised up Moses to be the deliverer. Well, here's Moses. The very final type that we find below. Moses is the type of person who out there, the children of Israel cannot get over into this land except through a supernatural agent.

What do we mean by supernatural? We're speaking of a supernatural intervention, a divine intervention in their world to bring them out of Egypt, over into this land, called the Spirit. To get you out of your own creation, out of the world, out of your sin, out of that whole life.

It took a lot. Nobody can do it by reformation. Nobody can do it by your will and all that. You know what? It has to be a supernatural intervention. It has to be Jesus Christ coming into the situation, taking you, and transferring you, and lifting you into another realm called the realm of spirit and life.

At least you can say that. It's a two-part. So we give up this idea of trying to go anywhere with the devil. You can treat it as I ought to. The folks that are governing you, whether you like them or not, What I'm going to do, well, I'm going to let my testimony say, I believe this is the right way.

I believe it's the right thing to do. Jesus Christ making a way over this, a miracle. And so, he takes these children of Israel over, by a supernatural tool, a tremendous work of God, a work of the Spirit, that nothing but pure God, just pure God, would like to extend.

How many would like to extend to that? I really would. I can't think of anything God desires, and I can't think of anything he desires. Well, I think, well, my Lord, don't you make a mistake about that.

No, he says, I don't make any mistakes here. I said, well, you do. How do we know he doesn't make any mistakes? How do we know there's no mistakes? There's a desire in your ears to dance and sing. She sang under the inspiration of the Spirit, and composed a hymn.

And she began to sing, and dance, and lift, and sing. It's about a deliverance. Showing perhaps the wrong spirit. There they were rejoicing. And it was quite a wonderful thing. Can't you feel the emotion?

Why shouldn't you? How do you know it was great joy? And now I'm over it. I can't speak. You can't read. We need you at times. But we are wonderful. What about those things also, and composed that lovely hymn about the husbands being drowned in the sea, and the children of Israel, ashamed to do the same, were overwhelmed.

How do you know they're right? Back of our own Hebrew, at home. In the Hebrew Bible, I've translated. You know the Hebrew Bible? Yes. It's a really nice hymn. Beautiful hymn. Beautiful song. And the wording of it.

And it goes in what we call strokes. It's a lovely thing. Well, that's all he's saying. Oh, my, they had a beautiful time. But you see, when those times will come, too, and their emotions subside a little bit, they find it's time for the Spirit to bring back to them There's a tree where they both fall down, trying to dwindle off to find your honor.

Very possible. You know, behind the wall. And bye-bye. But you cannot believe it, because you stop and you step in. Come on down, say, hold my hand. You don't belong up there. You're here now. And you're supposed to be up there.

But you're not up there now. Now you're here. Now I'll show you cleverly. Oh, you're backwards. You couldn't take it. You see it with your own eyes. I don't know all he has. He has forever lost. You're not.

You're right here. That's all in between. I had just that indicated to me. But I want to help him. Well, I have to tell something. So you go by yourself. Be yourself. Even more. We just go by faith. As the Lord says so and so, we say, Thank you, Lord.

I don't think about it. Praise God. But I follow it right along. Just like faith. Don't say, well, now, Lord, you know. And I don't believe in it. I just know that if you're up there. You see, do you remember?

When Israel crossed over, a group of people followed them. And they were called up. The mixed children of Israel. And they got the benefit of Israel by singing to them. And they crossed the sea to where they were.

In your heart and life, there has not been justice here. You deal with certain issues when you're crossing this Red Sea. And you try to belong with you in your experience. You've ascended the cart and your truck to this side of the mountain and said, Lord, show me this mixed life to be where it's at.

You choose to give them everything. And driving the whole multitude to stop with you. Now, according to the New Testament, when John the Baptist to those with the idea that their king or their messiah would come as a king to reign and rule.

That's what they were said with and believed. Because their teachers took them forward. They'll bring the poor Jews to put the judgment. What they'll do is that if you see this dove coming out of heaven, that's going to be the messiah.

The instrument in this drama to find out how many you think the common people knew. This is known from the Bible that some of you did not. How many of that happened? He tells you something you don't want to hear.

Isn't that sad? It's itching to have this Christ he has taught finally inspired and has to speak on the inspiration of the Spirit. He stands up. He says, Behold, how many of you can't knock the hole and just knock the hole and are waiting for this messiah to come and establish a lovely, wonderful kingdom and drag him out of the dungeon and put him out of the throat and they should run back to Egypt, Syria, and Assyria and Rome and Greece and Egypt and back, back, back.

And Jerusalem is beaten up by him. He's come to reign anew. He has come to that. He's come to die. God makes a kingdom and it came to die. And the Spirit can't get up and tell her about this thing. He's looking for a universal redeemer, a Christ that would save the world.

They have their little old names all made up. Don't make up your mind about all this stuff. You're going to be disappointed. So stop it. Come to a gentle quiet and say, Lord, speak to me. What is your thought?

How long for this Messiah to come and for him to establish his kingdom? He'll say, God, he's going to be a pastoral man. He's come not only for Israel but for the whole world. Well, for Israel he's needed to go to Israel and I know that's one of the hard things.

Israel today can't take Christ as a redeemer for the world. This is the point that I want to make. He introduced him as what? The Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world. That's what they want to change.
