Oct 6, 2026 Show with Andy Froiland on “Peter Jeffery: The Prince of Port Talbot, Wales”

Live from historic downtown Carlisle, Pennsylvania, home of founding father James Wilson, 19th century hymn writer George Duffield, 19th century gospel minister George Norcross, and sports legend Jim Thorpe.

It's Iron Sharpens Iron. This is a radio platform in which pastors, Christian scholars, and theologians address the burning issues facing the church and the world today. Proverbs, chapter 27, verse 17, tells us iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Matthew Henry said that in this passage, we are cautioned to take heed with whom we converse and directed to have in view in conversation to make one another wiser and better. It is our hope that this goal will be accomplished over the next two hours, and we hope to hear from you, the listener, with your own questions.

And now, here's your host, Chris Arnson.

Good afternoon, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and the rest of humanity living on the planet Earth, who are listening via live streaming at ironsharpensironradio .com. This is Chris Arnson, your host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, wishing you all a happy Tuesday on this sixth day of October 2026, and I'm absolutely thrilled to have an old friend return to the program today.

In fact, it's been so long since my guest today has been on the program that we don't have an archived recording of our last interview on the new Iron Sharpens Iron Radio website. He was on the program back in the days when we were broadcasting out of WNYG, 1440 AM on the dial in Babylon, Long Island, and that archive of interviews has not yet been switched over or uploaded to the new Iron Sharpens Iron Radio website in its entirety.

We had some classics like our interview with R .C. Sproul and John MacArthur and others, but my webmaster is only one human being, and there are hundreds and hundreds of interviews from that old archive that we have not yet included on the current website.

So, it is so wonderful to have Andy back on the new Iron Sharpens Iron Radio program that has been broadcasting from Pennsylvania since 2015. Andy Froiland is pastor of Hay Fork Community Church in Hay Fork, California, and a veteran of Christian broadcasting with a history spanning several decades in that field, including his service as ministry relations director at KFAX Christian Radio, an affiliate of Salem Media, where I also worked—not that I worked for KFAX, I worked for WMCA, 570 AM and 970 DJ, two affiliated stations with Salem Media in New York.

I worked there for approximately 15 years, from the early 90s through the early 2000s, and today Andy is going to be addressing the life and legacy of a very precious and dear mutual friend of ours who's now in glory with Christ, Peter Jeffrey, the Prince of Port Talbot, Wales, and introducing a powerful and humble servant of Christ to a new generation.

We're also going to be introducing PeterJeffrey .com, a new website archiving and preserving the writings and sermons of a hidden jewel of the Reformed pulpit, now in glory for eternity with Christ Jesus.

It's my honor and privilege to welcome you back after a very long absence to Iron Trip and Zion Radio, Andy Froiland. Well, it's a pleasure, man. It's been a minute. Thanks for having me on, Chris. Appreciate it.

Well, first of all, why don't you let our listeners know something about Hayfork Community Church in Hayfork, California?

Well, it's a small little church. On a good Sunday, either Christmas or Easter, we might have 70 folks. On average, 50 to 60, although that seems to be growing just a little bit. We're a small little church tucked away in the Northern California mountains, about 150 miles south of the Oregon border.

I know most people, when they think of Northern California, they think of San Francisco, and that would be more Central California. We get up with the bears and the deer, all the other animals that play.

In fact, I tell folks, you know, you got to take 299, take a left at the second squirrel, a right at the third deer, and you'll find us four bears down, and that's us. We are in a remote area. Hayfork, interesting enough, used to be a part of the lumber industry in Northern California, and over the past couple of decades, it's transitioned over to the pot industry.

It's a bunch of pot growers in Hayfork, so we do have a fertile field for evangelism, we'll put it that way. But it's a marvelous little church, wonderful folks, eager for the Word of God, and desirous to love Him more and more every day.

And do you have a website? Hayforkcc .com, I believe it is, or Hayforkcc .org, one of those two, or both. But yeah, Hayforkcc, I think .org might be it. I don't know if we've got org and com, or just one or the other.

Well, you don't have org, I mean, you don't have com, because I just...

Yeah, so it's probably .org.

Yes, it is, Hayforkcc .org. And I'm glad that I didn't give out the other website that appeared, because it looks like a completely different church with different leadership. And we'll repeat that later on in the program.

And why don't you, before we go into your personal testimony, even though you are a returning guest, since it has been quite a long time since you've been on the program, it may even be somewhere close to 20 years since you've been on this program.

Right. I think when you and I were co-laboring in Sister Stations back in the early 2000s, so...

Well, we have our first-time guests give a summary of their salvation testimony, but we'll have you do that again since it's been so long. But before that, in addition to the dear friend we are discussing today, Peter Jeffrey, your name has become synonymous with preserving and spreading the legacy of Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones to a whole new generation.

And why don't you tell us something about that and how that came about also?

Well, yeah, Chris, thanks for asking. Early on, while I was still working with my ad agency developing radio programs for churches—this was before I took the job in San Francisco at KFAX—I met Tony Rustin, who was heading up the Grace to You Europe program over in England.

And so he handled all of John MacArthur's stuff over in Europe. But he also was dealing with preserving and remastering Martin Lloyd Jones' sermons, just over 1 ,400 of them. And we got to talking one day, and he felt convinced that the MLJ Trust needed to grow beyond what he was doing there out of Ashford, Kent, south of London.

And he felt that there needed to be a radio program that was born out of just preserving the sermons and even doing an MLJ Trust in the U .S. So he wanted me to meet with Sir Fred Catherwood and Lady Elizabeth.

And of course, Elizabeth was Martin Lloyd Jones' daughter. And we did. We had a meeting. Long story short, they agreed that I was best fit to edit the sermons for radio and be the voice for what we called Living Grace.

So we did. We created the radio program. In fact, we had it on family radio for a few years before Harold Champing decided that the church was no longer the church and God had forsaken the church. We refused to sign on board with that, and so Harold summarily dismissed us from family radio airwaves.

By the way, I don't know if you could see behind me, that artwork on the wall is artwork I created for James White's book. And I actually came up with the title as well, Dangerous Airwaves Harold Camping Refuted and Christ's Church Defended.

And that is the original artwork that was used in the cover. And Harold Camping amazingly, obviously he disagreed with the conclusions of the book, but he actually told me he thought James White did a good job at writing the book.

And they debated on my program. It was a three-part debate. Unfortunately, only one of those days, of those three days, was an actual debate. They were debating on whether Christ was now the enemy of the church.

And only the first day of that three-day debate was an actual debate because someone must have told Harold, don't even engage with James. When it's your turn to speak, just pick up where you left off before and just teach.

That's exactly what he did because after the first day, he realized he was no match for James. And so he would just, when it was his turn to speak, well, as I was saying before, and he would just pick up where he left off.

But anyway. Yeah. Anyway. I have some hope he may be in glory with Christ because his granddaughter, who heard that debate, actually heard an interview I had with the current president of Family Radio after he repented of believing in and spreading the heresies of Harold Camping.

And his granddaughter heard that interview and told me that she was at Harold's bedside when he died and she believes that he repented. So hopefully that's true. But anyway, I interrupted you. Yeah. No, that's all right.

It's your show, brother.

But you're the guest. So once we were off Family Radio, that kind of cooled the jets of developing the MLJ Trust here in America. And it was through Elizabeth's son, Jonathan, who felt that we needed to at least preserve the library here in America.

And so working with a friend of mine, Russ Rice, they both revised, revitalized and re-energized the MLJ Trust. The leadership was redesigned. We've got some amazing guys at the helm, Jim Stetzinger, Russ Rice, Greg Jones, who now had all of that up.

And not only are we re-remastering those old original masters from digital or from reel to reel to digital, we've got a guy now, Rob Stone, who is actually remastering those digitals and cleaning them up with the latest of technology.

So it's going really great. That website is pretty new, mljtrust .org. We've got a lot of things going on there. It's just been amazing what these guys have been able to do going forward. So it really is exciting.

It's a marvelous ministry, and it really is the impetus behind what we're doing with Peter Jeffrey and his ministry. It's pretty much a group of the same guys, a couple of the same guys, who want to take what we've done with the Martyn Lloyd-Jones Trust and create the same thing with Peter Jeffrey.

And so that's what we're doing. And anybody who wants to find out more about that ministry, go to mljtrust .org, mljtrust .org, and we'll be repeating that information later on in the program. And by the way, folks, just to give you a little bit of a connection between Peter Jeffrey and Martyn Lloyd-Jones, for many years, Peter Jeffrey pastored the church known as Sandfields in Port Talbot, Wales, which was the first church pastored by Martyn Lloyd-Jones.

So my guest will give you a much more elaborate, detailed history of Peter Jeffrey after he provides for us a summary of his salvation testimony, including the kind of religious atmosphere in which he was raised, if any, and the kinds of providential circumstances that our sovereign Lord raised up in his life that drew him to himself and saved him.

And we'd love to hear a summary of your story, Brother Andy.

Yeah. So, like most Americans, you grow up in a typical American home. If there's any religion at all, it's nebulous, it's incidental. My dad was a non—he was raised in a Lutheran church. In fact, my great-grandfather that raised my dad was a circuit preacher in Minnesota.

Three Lutheran churches, two in Norwegian, one in English.

Wow. I didn't even know the Lutheran said circuit preachers.

This is before the turn of the century. This is in the late 1800s. He started at the age of 16 when he was saved and continued preaching until the age of 78 when he was diagnosed with cancer, and this would be in the late 40s, early 50s.

By the way, with the Lutheran circuit preachers, how on earth did they carry those kegs of beer on the horseback?

They used a couple of carts. Okay, I'm sorry. That is one of my favorite quotes by Martin Luther. While we ate and drank our beer, the word did it all. That's Luther. Anyway, he preached his last sermon six days before he died, so he was from 16 until his death in the pulpit.

He gave up the two Norwegian churches in the early 40s and stuck to just one, Trinity Lutheran there in Dawson, Minnesota. Anyway, so my dad was not religious at all. My mom was raised Catholic but knew from an early age just how wrong the Catholics were and ignorant they were.

So she kind of floated about, hit and miss with the Nazarene church in the 60s and 70s. By the time I'm 18 in 77, I'm just irreligious. But if you would have asked me, are you a Christian, I would have said yes.

If you would have said, what made you a Christian, that was the tale of the tape. I would have honestly said, with all sincerity, I'm an American. My mom is a Christian. I love baseball, and that's what makes me a Christian.

You fast forward, I served in the Navy, got back, got married, started my radio career in Northern California, worked my way down California. The dirty little secret of good radio getting into major market radio is the back door, which is Christian broadcasting.

They pay minimum wage, so they'll hire anybody, and it's a job. It's a ministry until payday, then it's a job, and that's how they do it. But you could get your voice into a major market by hiring on with a Christian station, which is precisely what I did, KFIA in Sacramento.

Of course, you've got to have a couple of extra jobs. I actually met Rush Limbaugh at the other job I was working at there in Sacramento. Taught me how to do talk radio, of all things. He was my mentor for talk radio.

Wouldn't use it until 2003, well, 2002. But at any rate, a guy approached me at the Christian station telling me he thought that I needed to be a part of what he was doing, developing radio programs for churches, predominantly Calvary Chapels.

So long story short, I signed on with the guy who became my best friend and best brother in Christ, and we started producing radio programs for Calvary Chapels. They're huge on radio, and so they're all over, and work was plentiful.

But it's 1989 when I am working on two Calvary Chapel guys, one just starting a series on the Lord's Prayer, and he's calling the series Seeking God. The other pastor is doing a series on Joshua, and he calls it the Nike series, because in Joshua, God is just telling Joshua time after time, just do it.

So my studio is set up that I can do two programs at once, and so I'm racking them up and I'm pumping them out, and it's just this, just do it, seek God, just do it, seeking God, just do it, seeking God.

And not to get Pentecostal on you, but it's almost as if there was a thunder from heaven. You don't, you never did. You're not mine. And Chris, it ripped me to shreds. I had to turn my studio off. I drove home.

My wife was at school with our son, and I can remember laying on my living room floor in August, screaming, crying to God, weeping, God, will you save a Pharisee, because that's what I am. I'm done. Hallelujah.

To, in about three or four hours, he did. Praise God. He relieved me of this burden, and Chris, it was like shooting me out of a cannon, and I'm still soaring. That was 1989, and I haven't let up yet.

Hallelujah. Through the thick and thin, up and down, hard and good, God has kept me in the middle of it all, and I, you know, my mom will tell me, would tell you if she was still alive, she remembers getting up in the middle of the night because her son, me, used to like sleepwalking.

But apparently, what I did in my sleepwalking is I'd get behind the love seat in the living room and I'd preach. So, you know, people say—.

I've heard some preachers that sound like they're asleep during those sermons. Well, I tell you, right?

People, you know, with radio and the call to preach, people say, you must have the gift to gab. I tell everyone who will listen, yeah, I sleep with the Blarney Stone. I haven't just kissed it once. I slept with that thing.

So, it's next to my pillow. But, yeah, God has—from there, I find myself actually walking in the circles of R .C. Sproul and Bob Godfrey, Ligonier Ministries, John—back in the day, John Armstrong, back when he had Reformation and Revival.

Yeah, before he, unfortunately, departed from the true faith.

Well, I don't know that he departed from the true faith. As I tell anybody, John Armstrong's love is really, really, really messy. Like the cross. Like the cross. So, and I'll just leave it there. His love for people stretches most Reformed guys.

Because how can you love somebody like that? And he doesn't. Anyway, that said, putting me into CAFACS in San Francisco, where we're doing pastors conferences and all that, and we've got the likes of Alistair Baker coming in, John MacArthur, you name it.

And so, I've ran in these circles. So, I've known these men most of my life. God used all of that to help shape me. I will say that the day I got saved, the following Sunday, I go to this Baptist church that I've been going to—simple Baptist church in the Central California Valley.

You know, I'm married. I've got a son. So, in my mind, I'm thinking, well, we've got to go to church, and so I do. You know, it's like I'm a good American, right? Three Sundays in a row, and I haven't heard the gospel once.

I am now listening to this guy with eyes wide open and ears wide open, and it's dawned on me that there's no gospel here. It's a social gospel. We sport the largest American flag in Visalia, and we'll give you a tri-tip after every service, because we just love on you.

And I knew this guy three miles down the road at this Calvary Chapel that I was producing for this series on seeking God. And so I took my family there. I thought, well, I've got to go hear this guy. And he was two sermons into a series.

He'd just begun with Romans. For the next two years, Chris, I cut my spiritual teeth on Reformed theology from a Calvary Chapel perspective. The one thing they did was they gathered around them wise men, Jim Elliffe, John Armstrong.

We had—oh, shoot, one minute after you die—the evangelist from England, John, several books out. He was the evangelist that turned Martyn Lloyd-Jones down for taking Westminster. Anyway, and this will get us to Peter, because Peter came along with this as well.

They were great guardrails for us to keep us from going too far to the right or too far to the left in this Reformed journey we were on. And so for two years, it was wonderful. And so I've got my spiritual teeth cut on Reformed theology from an Irenic perspective, quite unique.

I know I am abnormal. I'm not your normal, typical Reformed Presbyterian or Reformed Baptist. I'm a weirdo.

Well, people say that about me all the time. People say that about me all the time, but I don't think there's anything redeeming about my weirdness.

No. Well, you know, in God's grace, He uses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and I'm comfortable with that. Amen.

Well, praise God for the journey He has brought you on. And you wanted to conclude that in any way, that summer?

Just to say that kind of sets us up for our time with Peter, because along with those guys that came alongside us and helped us theologically and leadership-wise, it securitously took us to Peter Jeffrey.

And providentially, that is where my journey really takes a lot of turns and a lot of growth.

Amen. Well, before we go to our commercial break, I want to whet the appetite of our listeners, especially those who have never heard of Peter Jeffrey, to just get a tiny taste of this powerful preacher's gift of declaring the precious gospel.

I'm going to play a portion of a sermon by Peter, and of course, this will warm the hearts of everyone who knew Peter, or at least who used to love hearing him preach. And it will bring back, I'm sure, wonderful memories of that dear brother.

So, why don't you tell us a little bit about this sermon I'm about to play a portion of for our listeners?

Pete was asked to fill a pulpit in a church in Southern California, and at the last minute, they had to cancel that. And so, we were kind of scrambling a bit to see, okay, well, what else is available?

Is there another pulpit we could put Peter in? And we got a call from a friend going, hey, I can get you into Grace Community Church. John MacArthur is not here this weekend. I believe they would be happy to have Peter come in, and so he did.

Two services, 5 ,000 people. It's the largest congregation Peter had ever preached for. I think there were 2 ,000 the first service, right around 3 ,000 the second service. The years that I've known Peter and the years I've been a part of the Tate ministry, I have never heard him more free and more powerful than that Sunday.

It was amazing. I can still remember most of the sermon myself. You've got sermons in your mind and in your heart, you just never forget, and this is one of them.

Well, praise God. And here we go with that portion of that message from Peter Jeffery, and I believe that he is exegeting Romans 5, 1 in this sermon. And here we go with Peter Jeffery.

And therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul was a very orderly writer. It's not difficult to follow Paul's writings. I know Peter said that Paul had many difficult things to understand, hard sayings he called them.

But really, Paul was a man whose mind was very systematic, very orderly. He built up an argument carefully, constructively, and that's why he used words like but, and therefore, frequently. He made a case, he made a statement, and he said but, and there was the answer, or therefore, and there was the conclusion.

Our text this morning starts with therefore. Paul has been arguing certain things about justification by faith, and then he says now as a consequence of this, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

So let's briefly look at the first couple of chapters of Romans, see what Paul has been saying there. He's dealing with the question of human sin, and whenever Paul deals with the question of human sin, he never leaves it hanging in some nebulous vacuum or other.

He always deals with it in terms of God's reaction to it. You see, people today seem to think they can sin and get away with it, or that God is indifferent. But no, God has got a definite response to human sin, and Paul spells this out in the first three chapters.

For instance, in chapter 1, he's dealing with the sin of the Gentiles, all those who are not Jews. And after his introduction, he begins to deal with these people, and he says the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against the godlessness and wickedness of men who hold the truth in unrighteousness.

And he's talking about people who even though they didn't have a biblical revelation, they had no scriptures. And even though they had no prophetic ministry, they had no servants from God coming to teach them and bring them the Word of God.

Paul argues in chapter 1 of Romans that there is such a revelation of God in nature that if these people reject God, they're without excuse. Without excuse. They can't say we didn't have any scriptures, God.

They can't say we didn't have any preachers, God. God says there is such a revelation. It's clear enough to reveal the being of God, if not the character, if not the glory and the majesty and the love and the grace and the mercy of God, certainly the being of God.

And it's enough, he says, to leave them without excuse. And if they reject this revelation of God, he says, 24, 26, and 28, God gave them up. God gave them over to live in that condition, rejecting God, to wallow in the filth of their sin, to wallow in the degradation of their nature.

And Paul really in chapter 1 spells out terribly, man in sin, man in his rejection of God. And then in chapter 2 he deals with the Jews, people who had everything these other folk didn't have. They had scripture.

They had prophets. They had God working for them and intervening for them, God ministering on their behalf. But really they were no different because they too rejected God. And then in chapter 3 in verse 9, Paul brings both these strands together and he says that the whole world, Jew and Gentile, the whole world is guilty before God.

And that is one of the most devastating scriptures that you can come across. Listen to it. He says that every mouth may be silenced. Every mouth is cut off. Nobody can have an excuse. Nobody can say this or that to justify themselves.

For every mouth is silenced and the whole world is guilty before God. Now that's the terrible condition Paul paints of man. And then he begins one of his buts, but he says, into that awful, awful gloomy picture of man in sin, God's reaction to that but he says.

And then he begins to introduce the gospel. And the gospel that Paul introduces, he's a gospel to deal with man's real problem. He doesn't introduce a psychological gospel. He doesn't introduce a gospel based on philosophy or based on education.

He doesn't introduce a gospel based on man's experience. He introduces a gospel that's centered from beginning to end and is the grace and mercy and love of God. He introduces a gospel that tells us what God has done.

Not what we should be doing, but God, he says, God. Now our righteousness from God has been revealed. You see, the function or the prime function of the gospel is not to make men happy. It's to make men righteous.

Grace now lives in me. Well, that was just a portion of a powerful sermon. I'm not sure why that song was in there.

You know what? I gave you an old file that we cut up and threw in some gospel songs here and there. Oh, okay. I've got one clear of that, and I thought I sent you the wrong one.

That's quite all right, because I was going to end the clip anyway soon. I mean, not that I wanted to, because I'll bet you that most of the people listening are sorry that I turned the sermon off.

Now they want the whole song, don't they? Or actually the whole sermon.

Yeah, exactly. But that's why you can go to peterjeffrey .com. And by the way, folks, Jeffrey is spelt J-E-F-F-E-R-Y. I know that there are different spellings for Jeffrey. Some have spelled with the R-E-Y.

Some of the spellings begin with the letter G like George. But Peter's last name was J-E-F-F-E-R-Y. And we are going to hear much more about Peter Jeffrey. And the ways that the Lord has powerfully used this brother and still is using him, even though that Peter is in heaven with Christ Jesus for eternity.

His sermons still exist, and they are still transforming lives and drawing true believers deeper into the knowledge of his teachings and the sacred and inerrant words of Scripture. So we'll be hearing more about Peter.

And by the way, thanks to my dear friend, my very first pastor, and your dear friend, Mike Gadosz, he has provided me with copies of Peter's autobiography, Chains of Grace, the Peter Jeffrey story. And I am sure this will be a blessing to many.

If you submit a question for my guest, Andy Froiland, you will receive a free copy of this book. Mike Gadosz, I thank God for him that he had the wisdom to invite Peter to preach at, I believe he preached at both Calvary Baptist Church in Amityville, which was the church where I was baptized by Mike Gadosz.

And then when we merged with First Baptist Church of Merrick, Long Island, we became Grace Reformed Baptist Church of Long Island, and its location was in Merrick. And I know that Peter also preached there.

I can distinctly remember him preaching there. And in fact, I think my brother Bob visited that day. But Peter was quite remarkable, and I would not have heard him preach likely if Mike Gadosz had not invited him.

And he has nothing but the highest accolades to give about you, brother Andy. And our mutual friend Joe Jakowicz also sends his greetings, the founder and chairman of the board for First Love Radio.

Remind me to send checks to them. Okay. Okay.

So if anybody has a question about Peter Jeffrey, for my guest Andy Froiland, our email address is chrisarnson at gmail .com, chrisarnson at gmail .com. As always, give us your first name, at least, city and state of residence, and your country of residence if you live outside of the USA.
