Prayer, Holy Living, and Gender Distinctions in Worship

I was thinking that as we were waiting for the Lord to pray, that Paul said, I will therefore let men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without ralph and doubting. Did he mean just men? Yes, he meant just men, because he goes on to say, in that manner, that women adorn themselves in modest clothing.

That's the context, you see. So, they pray everywhere. You know, years ago, I was at a church there, and an Anglican lady phoned up. She wanted me to come and talk to her about Christ, and I didn't. She accepted the Lord, but she was from Wales, and as a young girl, she'd been in Wales at the time of the Revival, and she said, I remember walking down the sidewalk and seeing six or eight or ten men really encircling the sidewalk with their arms around each other, storming at me, praying.

And she said, I could never get away from that. I knew they had something I didn't have. So, what is it? So, they showed her, and she received the Lord. Men pray everywhere. You need to hear the talk of the living and pray a little, you know?

Remember, the famous spoof on Chastity and the Winifred during the Revival days, and all the way down, people were, you know, in the plane to our finals, you know, in our group. We were sat together, and all the way down, we were just sharing needs for prayer, and we prayed the whole way.

The whole way from, you know, Chastity to the Winifred. And at the end of the night, the Winifred said, well, let's go to Permian. So, we had to wait about two hours in the terminal. So, we went to Permian, in the terminal, you know.

And just, and people were walking by, staring down at the floor up there, you know. And I said, you're praying, you don't pray, okay? I will pray for you. Men pray everywhere, everywhere, lifting up holy hands, to be able to negotiate.

The Gospel Received by Revelation

Chapter One, I marvel, that you are so soon moved, for he will call you into the grace of Christ, unto another gospel, which is not another. For there is some that trouble you, that pervert the gospel of Christ.

But do we, or he, from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you, than that which we have preached unto him, unto you? Let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you, than that which I have received, let him be accursed.

For do I not persuade men of God, or do I seek to please men? For if I have pleased men, I should not be a servant of Christ. But I certify you, brethren, the gospel which was preached of me, is not after man, for I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it.

He didn't get it from the other apostles, you know. He wasn't taught the gospel. He was taught by the revelation of Jesus Christ. And you know, in the book of Acts, Jesus said something to Paul about he had appeared to him once at the Lord Damascus.

People are realizing, Christ had appeared to Paul many times after that. And so he's taught there, the things in which I will appear to you. In the past book, about the abundance of the revelations, these were appearances of Christ to him.

He wasn't there for those 40 days after the resurrection, when Christ talked to the other apostles. But he had a personal encounter many times. This is what I was able to say in 1 Corinthians 14. The things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

He could say that because it was directed from Christ to the other apostles. He got it directly from the Lord. It's just so because he had been in the region of Galatia, seen many people converted, churches started, and he's going, well, he comes back and finds they've slipped away somehow.

Somebody had introduced another gospel. And this man said, it's not another, but they're perverting the gospel. They're adding something to the gospel. We have the problem discussed in Acts chapter 15, when you have to call a special council of the churches in Jerusalem.

Not in Rome, by the way, but in Jerusalem, to get this matter settled. He came to the conclusion that Jew or Gentile is so simply by faith in Christ. You don't need anything more. You can pervert the gospel by adding things to it.

And some people have done that. And some people have said, they are very strong. Unless you're baptized, you can't be saved. You must be baptized. Paul said, Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel.

So baptism is not part of the gospel. It's something you should do, of course. I mean, here, if a man in the house of Jesus, he commanded that he should be baptized, and they grew up. It's not something you pray for, by the way.

The Simplicity of the ABC Gospel

It's something you do in obedience to God, the gospel. We used to talk about the ABC gospel, to make it simple for people to understand. A, I'm sending, come shall the glory of God. B, behold, the Lamb of God takes away the sin of the world.

C, Christ said, come unto me, or you will labor in a heavy labor, and I'll give you rest. The ABC gospel. It's quite simple. Sometimes it's made complicated. I believe it was Harry Ironside, a great Bible teacher, I heard him once in Winnipeg, and he could really do it.

He passed through the famous Moody Church in Chicago. It's a large place. They would sing close to 5 ,000. They had to have double service to them when he preached there. I mean, he really had a gift.

The Lamb said, there's only two reasons in the world, just two. One sings, nothing in my hands I bring, simply to that cross I flee. Another sings, nothing in my hand I bring, to that cross I will not flee.

Two religions. That's very true. Now, the grace of God. Paul makes it so clear in Romans that grace and worse cannot be mixed. Grace will produce worse, but grace and worse can never be mixed for salvation.

It speaks about an insulting spirit of grace in Hebrews chapter 10. How do you insult a spirit of grace? You try to get to heaven by adding something to the grace of God and you're insulting the spirit of God because he's a spirit of grace.

He understands. He knows. The only way a sinful person like you and me, no way to get to heaven is by the grace of God. There is no way you can do that. We may have a saying, you don't have to die once more, but you may die twice.

The Second Death and Eternal Judgment

The Bible makes it very clear, especially in the book of Revelation. He talks about the second death in the book of Revelation to 11 and 26 and then 2014. He said death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.

This is the second death. The lake of fire is the second death. If you're only born once, you'll die twice. If you're born twice, you'll only die once. It's appointed of the men once to die, but after this, the judgment.

And all of us are appointed. I mean there's no way you can escape it unless we're living when Christ comes back. Then we won't die. But other than that, we will. But the second death, if I'm not born again, I'll experience the second death.

And remember, it's the lake of fire. It's made very clear. In God's presence, there is fullness of joy, regard for God, there are pleasures for every man. The Bible says, God will make his people to drink of the river of his pleasures.

And when God wants to die, Paul was talking to rich men who said, that God gives us richly our things to enjoy. And so it isn't wrong to enjoy things. You know, it's not wrong. But it's wrong to do it all the time.

You know, as long as things can be done, then enjoying pleasurable things is okay. When the rich man was in hell, four times, it speaks in the context of Luke 16, of the fact that he was in torments. There's much preaching nowadays that says, well, hell is an eternal, and it's not really a bad place.

It's just a place where you just spanked a little bit for a few years, and then you get back into heaven. The people are teaching that. There's a lot of flaky gospel nowadays. I listened to a certain guy from Texas.

He's got 30 ,000 people in his congregation, and he's always patting the people on the back and stroking them kindly. There's never a word about repentance. There's never a word about sin. That's true about some of the big prophets as well.

There's never a word about sin, no word about repentance. The people are deceiving their thinking. They're going to get to heaven just by faith in Christ. But Paul said he preached two things in Acts chapter 20.

Repentance and Faith in the Gospel

Repentance towards God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. You've got to have both. As a matter of fact, Jesus said in Acts 21, if you don't repent, you can't believe Him. Did you know He said that?

He said, John came unto the Lord righteous, which means you did not believe Him. But the publicans and the harlots believed Him. And you, when you had sinned afterward, did not repent that you might believe Him.

So if you don't repent, you can't believe Him. When Christ was on His public ministry in Mark chapter 1, He said, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel.

Repent, and believe the gospel. When they sent the twelve out to preach, it says in the gospel of Mark, Ephesians chapter 6, when they preached, twelve, when they preached that men should repent, that's what they preached.

Now they preached other things that I'm sure of. But this was central to the teaching. He preached that men should repent. Well, Faison Fowler, who used to be the head of the White Faction Ministries, he did have a mission and told me, we're kids getting from very large churches at times, and he said, he said, pastors come to him and say, now, don't monkey around this repentance stuff, just tell the people to come to Jesus.

And if they insist on that, he just knocks away, he doesn't preach at all. So it's repentance and then faith. That's funny, I say, okay, repentance towards God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. So what is repentance?

You know, you think about being a pencil without the need to repent, to rethink, you know, that's part of our belief, we've been walking away from God, we're turning around and we walk towards God. And basically that's what it is.

The only sentence you say, it's not a few tears in the handkerchief, it's cash on the barrel head. Okay. Repentance and faith. Two destinations. You know, there are two kinds of Christians, there are self-loved Christians and there are God-loved Christians.

Self-Will, Sacrifice, and Obedience

Titus chapter 1 says, not self-willed. Honestly, you don't reduce to that yourself. And it's not something you can do all at once forever because other things may come up later on and you have to struggle with them and you have to die yourself.

Again, Conrad was a friend of mine in British Columbia, one of the greatest Christians I think I ever knew. Nobody ever read his life stories in heaven now, but you couldn't be with him without being closer to God.

He was a great soul-runner. He pushed from logging camps to mining camps and fearless. At one time, he was a real athlete and he took top honors running a mile in British Columbia for two years in a row.

And then God called him at the age of 30 into a Christian world and he hit the trail. I'll tell you, the girls in the office in Toronto, the Shiner's Mission, they said, from the time he hit the trail, he was just a steady stream of comrades everywhere he wandered.

But he told me one time, he said, Bill, I have never known successful ministry that was not connected with sacrifice on my part. Did I get to come easy? But there's sacrifice. It's not in you. Not self-will.

In Ephesians 6 he says, doing the will of God from the heart. And sometimes he was struggling with the will of God a long time and he wouldn't get along with me. He would push off to one side and God keeps jumping, calling, speaking to us and leading to us.

I remember one time I was struggling with God about a certain thing that he, I mean, you know, God can speak very powerfully at times, but so politely, I was scared. Anyway, I obeyed. He deliberately asked me to do.

And right after that, the very next meeting I had, there was an outpouring of the spirit that was really phenomenal, you know. And God showed me this wouldn't happen if you hadn't obeyed, you know. So it's not always easy, but not self-will.

I say, you know, very to obey when you're not obeying him. And remember that time I was in a church and I was praying and I was praying till called me and said, know, possible that you preparing of father Jesus.

And when He wanted to go to South America. And he kept on playing this game of gun for how long. He kind of cleared his whole world, you know. In case he didn't want to go. And finally he said, Lord, I will go anywhere between Canada.

Make sure the lines are all cleared where they ought to be. All right. Sometimes once they've seen they profess that they know God. But at worst, they deny him. They abominable and disobedient. Not that any of them work and won't trust you.

Salvation Produces Good Works and Love

There's some like that who profess, and they only profess. And yet they deny what they profess by the way they live. Christ said that your light so shines for men that they may sing your good works and glorify their Father which is in heaven.

Good works does not mean salvation, but salvation should produce good works, right? You know, it's made very plain in the New Testament everywhere. We are here to say that we should create in Christ Jesus unto good works which God has made for our gain.

We should walk in that. So while it has nothing to do with salvation, it's good if salvation produces a godly life where we try to help others. Walk in God's ways and be loving. You know, for a lot of people, love is sort of an emergency thing they put on when there's some relatives who are coming to stay for the weekend and they don't really like it.

I know a couple. They told me they were having some relatives who wanted to come but they couldn't come down and so they practiced for two weeks smiling in the mirror. I mean, who says they didn't? I mean, they're quite frank about it.

You know, how are you going to get on for that weekend with those people who don't like you? Listen, it's not an emergency. It's not for emergencies. It's a way of life. Walk in love. Let all your things be done with love.

It's not for emergencies. It's a way of life. So then you don't have to try to love anybody. It's not a matter of religion. It's a law. There's a man in England, an evangelist. They said he was the ugliest man in the New South.

He preached the gospel. People would say, but you know what happened? He had big crowds because people wanted to see this preacher. He was the ugliest man in the New South. I mean, where could he still have?

He had the gospel. So we have to be what we are in love with the love of God. Here's a thought. You're standing on the sidewalk, walking the sidewalk. There's some lights here. There's a blind man crossing.

Persevering to Receive God's Blessing

Now, he heard the buzzer. They have a special buzzer or whatever for blind people. And he's walking across the street, but he gets a little confused, and he bumps into a car. The guy hits the horn, and this blind guy gets a noose down his side.

He said, you know what? I should go up to the neck of that car and have this love feeling, you know? So he gets down there and walks. Pretty soon, he's now in a car. He crosses the street. The light changes.

The car's moving into view. He's legs, he goes forward to view, and he runs into this black car, and he's killed. And he said, man, you know, if I'd have had that love feeling, I could have done anything, you know?

That's the way people talk. That's the way people think. Love feeling? Because nothing does it. They love to see a love dance, especially in any way. I remember one time in a Christian logging camp, and I'd been making room for a while, and I had all figured out that Friday was going to be the last meeting in the logging camp.

I didn't know if any other camps in the area were going to get home on Saturday. As I left, I found that there was another camp in the area, but they only had tall men. So I began to ask myself, there's only tall guys there.

To me, that's nothing. I can go home. And it was hard to get in there because of the little bulldozed road, you know? If you know anything about that, a little bulldozed road, just as roots and stumps are in the middle of the river, you know?

And it was really hard. I mean, sometimes four miles an hour. But I got there, you know? I wouldn't have missed that meeting for anything in the world. You know, the launch pressure was so powerful that reading them, sometimes you're already talking to them.

And so it cost something. It wasn't a big deal, but I might have done the wrong thing. And this is something of a blessing from God. There's two ways in our reading the Bible. Some people who are reading the Bible, they're looking for something that will justify the low level at which they live here.

Reading Scripture Without Colored Glasses

And they're bound to find that Jesus says, chapter 7, that says, if you're not righteous or remorseless, you destroy yourself. See, you don't have to be too righteous. That's what the Bible says. If you get the book of Ecclesiastes, the book all by itself, I've got time to go into that.

I heard David Jeremiah preach a series of sermons a while ago on the book of Ecclesiastes, an incredible teaching. I've never said anything from him, I'm sure. But anyway, in reading the Bible, it's God speaking to me.

It was God speaking to me now. What am I going to do with it? Some people have favorite chapters, Romans chapter 8, you know, Ephesians chapter 2, whatever, and you want to know many of those chapters off by heart.

They don't have the word change, you know, in the second few years. What about that? They don't want to know. I think it was William Sumner who said, when a backslider wants to justify his backsliding, he finds a backslider, an old backslidden in heels, and he lays him on the floor and he lays him aside and he says, hey guys, look, I'm finally here.

Is that how we do it? Sometimes that's how we do it, yeah. When you read the Bible, not just read the Bible because God is speaking through the head. Before you ever read the Bible, you should ask God to speak and ask him to do that.

And he will, he speaks and blesses his word. There are 7 ,487 promises in the Bible. Did you know that? Some of you do know but you've heard it before probably. Let's take some truths. There's only about 39 ,000 verses.

7 ,487 promises? Yeah. So I know some of the things you want and not all for me. Okay, let's cut it in half. Let's say you have 3 ,000 promises. Isn't that going to get you through life? Isn't that enough?

I know one promise only that can carry a Christian for a thousand years. Casting all your care upon him before he cares for you. Does that make any sense? I'm surprised somebody said hallelujah. That's a wonderful verse though.

Casting all your care upon him. Little things, big things, whatever. He cares. God cares. So let's live the Christian life to the fullest. Now Susan Carter said I mentioned, he's a good guy. He hit the trails when he was 7 years of age.

And he had a heart attack when he was 60. 20 years. I met him after he had the heart attack. And he wasn't on the road very much. And I met him in Prince George, DC. He did a good talk on the sidewalk.

Carter said, not very good. He said, you know last year I only led about 35 people to Christ talking on the sidewalks here in Prince George. He said I got nothing done. Almost nothing done. You know. He led 35 people to Christ in one year.

To him that was nothing. You know. He's no longer that. Thank God for him. Well, sometimes we wear colored glasses. I have a book in my library that's called Coloring the News. And it's about the second year of the colored news that all left the way you were thinking.

And so everything you get from them will be slammed into the left. Always. You don't get what really happened. You don't get what was really said. You get what took the place of what was said. And I'll give you one glowing example.

A homosexual fellow was hit by some guys behind a truck and they dragged him till he died. It was a horrible thing. And at the same time, two homosexual men hitting up the 14 year old boy and sodomizing him for several days and then killed him.

So what's got the most publicity? The story about the homosexual guy behind the truck. Now 18 times as much publicity as you have to talk about Coloring the News. That's going on all the time. I could be careful not to be doing that and reading the Bible and looking for things that are going to help me in making it look better myself.

Self-Denial and the Cost of Discipleship

People have to be ruthless when it comes to self. And Jesus Christ has told us to, if any man will come after me, I'll have him deny himself and take up his cross and daily in faith for increasing me.

I can't answer that. God has said in 1921, you can't exercise faith unless there's repentance first of all. You can't. And that's exactly what he said. You did not repent that you might be redeemed. Keep that in mind.

So preach the full gospel. Repentance and faith. And God will bless that. He always has. He always, always will. If there's another thing you want to know about TV broadcasts, I'm not critical of him, but I didn't like what I heard and saw.

He said last week we're on Acts chapter 2. We have a Pentecost in this place. And we're going to show you a film. We told a film and it was a real Pentecost. It was a film and it was happening. The guy's sitting in the chair here, the preacher.

And people come running and kneel here and he puts this thing in the water. He puts a little bit of water in it for it, prays a little prayer for it to go away. And all kinds of people came and had this down to them, you know.

Because he was assuming I became Christian, you know. But the gospel doesn't mean preach. He didn't know the gospel, you know. I couldn't really watch him. This is pleasing me to the Bible. He can't be really right, you know.

If that was Pentecost, then I don't know what Pentecost is. Anyway, it went on. I guess a lot of people when he showed me, not just showed, but thought it was nice. I knew, like, he spoke nicely and prayed a little prayer there, you know.

Leaving Judgment to God

One thing you must keep in mind is this. It says in Hebrews 4, through naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom you have to do. God is the only one with whom you have to do. This verse in Hebrews 4 says so good, and according to Isaiah, where God said in the Hebrew Bible, you may return or confess.

God says so good, everyone wished to give a count of himself to God. And it goes on to say, because this is true, let us not therefore judge one another any more, but judge this rather, when one put a stumbling block on a prisoner who fell in his brother's way.

Don't spend your time criticizing others. You know, it says over there in Romans 2, you are inexcusable in that wherever you are the judges, for where you judge another, you condemn yourself, for you the judges are doing the same thing.

And so I can't just say when you find people dealing with the certain sins of their dear, it is probably because that's the sin they're committing, you know. Inexcusable, we are that. And now it says in 1 Corinthians 4, yeah, judge nothing before the time until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsel of the heart, and then how?

Do you know the rest of the verse? And then, judge nothing before the time. You're sitting and judging other people. You must never do that. You don't know what's going on. You don't know what kind of life he has.

You don't know what kind of job he did before. You don't know these things. God has everything. And that's why God will show every man a praise of God. Someone said in the Bible before, we have what I sometimes call God's recipe for personal revival.

Personal Revival Through Humility and Confession

Aren't you good in mind? Are you more effective in man than you may be? Let your laughter be turned to man, and enjoy the heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord. He should not want another, but don't do that.

Don't make that mistake. If somebody's struggling going up, and someone's afraid going down, and continuing on the corner, bump into a person that you've known years before, haven't seen for years, and say, hey, how are you doing spiritually, I said.

You know what he said? He started to cry. He said, I was hoping somebody would ask. Pray together. You know, the Bible says that you exhort one another daily, right? That says that if you're swooning, let's pray with your heart and through your sickness to sin, and again in Hebrews chapter 10.

Okay. Exhort one another daily. Have you ever been exhorted by another Christian? I mean, besides your wife, or your husband, or you know, has anybody ever been there? I sometimes ask you to raise your hands and go up, you know.

It doesn't happen. The reason the Methodist revival in the West and the East was so powerful and lasting so long, it lasted a hundred years, the reason this happened is because there's spiritual wealth and we're constantly talking with each other.

How are you doing, brother? Sister, how are you doing? You know? And then we pray with each other, and come to each other, and encourage one another. And then things just grow, and grow, and grow, and grow.

And that should be the outcome of a real revival. When we get concerned about other Christians, because they're brothers and sisters in God's eternal family, we're part of that family as well. And so, exhorting one another daily, there's energy behind you through your sickness of sins.

Gospel preaching, many Jesus mentioning, many verses of the Bible maybe quoting, and then at the end he really heard nothing. Passed down in Texas, had a building, in a town of 1200, a building seating 500, Sunday mornings he was pretty full, Sunday evenings about 80, Monday morning about 40, and so on through the week.

Now, what was going on? He seemed to be a real Christian, you know? And then we had to go, as I was leaving, we were just near the airport, and we're sitting there, and a young Air Force kid came and sat beside him, and I wanted to say, I love you, I miss you, and I wonder what I'll do to you.

So we're giving this time to this kid, finally he's learning where he's from, and then he said, now son, don't you think it'd be a neat thing for you to pray this little prayer, now he hasn't said anything about sin and salvation and morale.

He says, son, don't you think it'd be a neat thing for you to pray this little prayer of Jesus' into my heart? And the kid says, yeah, I guess so, I guess so. Well, pray it, pray it, pray it. So he prays Jesus' name in my heart, and then he whacked him on the back of his head, and he won't let me.

Oh, those fellas, be chillin'. You don't understand the kind of truth she had. You know. And I'm not his judge, I know that, but you know, it just sort of disturbed me to watch this. So what happened on the plane, I got sitting next to this kid, and I got talking to him, and he said, well, you didn't know I did that?

He didn't really know if he was having sex, he didn't have a clue. He prayed this little prayer of Jesus' into my heart. The preacher said, you should do it. You get away from that, you get back to the hardcore of the gospel.

It's seven years you have to tell people it's seven years because they don't know. And then he came and said, no, I don't sin. Well, do you know it's not allowed to have sex once in a month? No, nobody does.

Do you know what I mean? They don't show it, but nobody does. So you're the same as everybody else, that's right, so you're over now. I don't know what he meant, no, no. I haven't killed anybody, I haven't stolen any money, you know.

People reason this way. Sometimes it's hard, but you know, I found the loving attitude, and that is important. A loving attitude in talking to people, so you're not trying to ram it down their throat, you're trying to...

Let me give you an example. There's a place I take my car, and the guy that owns the place and runs the place, I presume, you know, you see him, he's always stuck in his office, and he's always taking care.

And I want to talk to this guy about the Lord, you know, but he's like, you know, how can I do it? I'm like, I just want to. So I prayed this day, just about three weeks ago, and I said, Lord, give me 40 minutes with that guy, okay?

And I said, now Lord, I believe in you, give me 40 minutes with this guy. So I walked into the place, and he was sitting there all by himself. Would you believe it? And we had 40 minutes together. And we really had a wonderful time.

He said, well, I guess I'm an atheist, I don't know, I was really stuck with what he said, and I don't think I can much talk to religion at all, and I guess I'd be an atheist, and so I was able to pour the gospel into him, you know?

And he said, hey, can I get you a cup of coffee? He got me a cup of coffee, and we talked for another 20 minutes, you know, and a cup of coffee, he said. He was so friendly, you know? And so I just kept giving it to him as far as I could go, up to his office, and other people came in.

And then when I was leaving, I was praying by the door, and he came running back out. I said, are you leaving now? Oh, he said, it was so nice to talk to you today. You shook my hand, I almost broke into you.

What did I do? I was gone for 40 minutes with this guy. Can you do things like that? Yes, you can. I mean, the Lord is everything. Everything is under God's control. I used to live there. It was about 3 a .m., right opposite my house was a store.

And behind my store, his name was Z, I think it was. And I tried to talk to him. I gave him a gospel tract, and he said, let's find my wife over there. And he walked over to me. He said to me, Lord, give me half an hour, God.

And one day I looked over, and he was sitting there, lying there. He was sitting in the front seat, his feet dangling down here, just looking far off into space. And I went and got some of those 30 minutes, man, so I caught up with him, and I gave him 30 minutes, showing him gospel.

Just ask God to guide you. Say, oh no, no, Psalm 32, I'll guide you, but I will be on you. Don't be like a horse or a mule. Don't be a donkey. Don't be stubborn. Let God lead you. Believe Him for that.

Just ask God. As I've done many times, I'm certainly not perfect in that way, but I mean, I've discovered that you can do that in Godlessness. The Lord Jesus Christ, that's your personal Savior. Well, I went to the church with him for 13 hours, and naked and open are the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

And after all, he, I say, he's the ultimate reality. He's the one that knows us perfectly. Because I was honest day and night. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, the holy and the good. He's watching.

God's Sovereignty, Guidance, and Final Prayer
