DAY 215: 2 Chronicles 32–33

Welcome to 5-Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today's August the 3rd, and we'll be looking at 2 Chronicles 32 -33. Yesterday, 2 Kings showed us the limits of the Judean kings. Hezekiah received 15 additional years, but he stumbled into pride.

And then Manasseh filled Jerusalem with idols and innocent blood. The promised future could not rest upon David's fallen sons. Today, Chronicles is going to revisit both of those reigns, but yet from a different angle.

Hezekiah’s Deliverance and the Danger of Pride

Chapter 32 exposes what happened inside of Hezekiah's heart after his deliverance. And chapter 33 is going to reveal what Kings did not record, that Manasseh was conquered, humbled, and restored. And together, these two passages are going to advance a startling claim.

Pride can ruin a faithful king, but no sinner lies beyond the reach of God's humbling mercy. So in that way, 2 Kings 32 recounts Sennacherib's invasion. Hezekiah strengthens Jerusalem and blocks the springs outside of the city.

He repairs the wall, and he organizes the commanders. And yet, his deepest confidence is theological. Assyria has only an arm of flesh, but Yahweh is the one who fights Judah's battles. Sennacherib's officers mock that confidence, just as we've seen in Kings.

They compare the living God to conquered nations, powerless gods. And Hezekiah and Isaiah cry out in prayer. And the Lord sends an angel who destroys Assyria's mighty army in a night. Sennacherib returns home in disgrace and is even killed by his own sons.

But victory creates a new kind of danger, because Hezekiah becomes sick. He receives a miraculous sign, and then he grows proud. Wrath threatens Judah, and yet Hezekiah humbles himself. Later, Babylonian envoys arrive, and God leaves him to himself to reveal everything that was in his heart.

Manasseh’s Captivity, Repentance, and Restoration

Chapter 33 then turns to Manasseh. He rebuilds the idolatrous altars. He practices sorcery. He desecrates the temple. And he leads Judah into greater evil than even the nations around them were doing.

When he refuses God's warnings, Assyrian commanders seize him with hooks. And they bind him, and they carry him off to Babylon. In distress, Manasseh humbles himself, and he prays. And God hears him and returns him to Jerusalem.

Manasseh then removes the altars to the foreign gods. He repairs the Lord's temple, and he commands Judah to worship the Lord, though the damage of his earlier leadership remains. So as you read today, I want you to ask the following question.

What God Accomplishes When He Humbles the Proud

What does God accomplish when He humbles the proud? He does more than just reduce their circumstances. He reveals their heart. He destroys their false sense of confidence and assurance. He turns helpless sinners towards himself.

Hezekiah's pride is exposed after his victory. Manasseh's rebellion is broken through captivity. In both cases, humility means recognizing that the Lord alone is God and that every single blessing that he gives depends upon his mercy.

And in that way, the central pattern in this passage is pride, humiliation, prayer, and mercy. Hezekiah trusts God while Assyria threatens the gates, but after the threat is gone, his heart rises in pride.

And that's a sobering pattern because danger may drive us towards dependence, but success can sometimes quietly persuade us that we are the ones who are strong. Chronicles says that God tests Hezekiah so that the contents of his heart would become visible, and the test does not give birth to pride, but it exposes the pride that was already there.

God's searching providence reveals what applause and comfort or fear can sometimes conceal. Then Manasseh carries the pattern to an astonishing extreme. He does not merely experience a moment of vanity.

He institutionalizes idolatry and corrupt worship. He practices sorcery himself, which is one of the abominations listed in Scripture, and he leads the entire nation astray in his wickedness. If anyone appeared beyond repentance, it would have been Manasseh.

And the consequences for what he did was also severe. Assyria placed iron hooks in his back. Babylon became the place where the king finally bowed to the Lord. His suffering became a severe kind of mercy, and yet repentance does not erase every earthly consequence.

Manasseh removes the idols, but the people continued sacrificing at all of those high places. His reforms cannot instantly undo the decades of corruption that he has done. Grace forgave him, but yet wisdom teaches us to fear sin's widening influence and consequences as well.

Repentance, Consequences, and Grace for the Humble

And this speaks directly to us as well. We must not wait for chains before we bow to God. We receive God's warnings early, and we must never confuse repentance with despair. The same God who opposes the proud gives grace to the humble.

Jesus Christ, the True Humble and Merciful King

And in that way, 2 Chronicles 32 -33 directs our attention and our gaze directly to Jesus, the true humble and merciful king. Hezekiah stands against Assyria with prayer, but his own heart is vulnerable to pride.

In the same way, Jesus faces every temptation without self-exaltation. Through possessing divine glory, he humbles himself, and he obeys the Father and is even willing to go to the cross. Manasseh deserves judgment, but receives mercy after humbling himself.

The gospel shows how mercy can be given to the unrighteous based off the righteousness of Christ. At the cross, the innocent king is bound so that rebels like you and I can be released. He is cast outside the city so that exiles can be brought back home.

Manasseh's restoration, therefore, does not tell us that sin is small. His violence, idolatry, and corruption were horrifying, but it does tell us that Christ's grace is bigger still. No human life is too far gone.

No history is too stained. No heart too hardened. No exile too distant for Jesus, who died and rose again to save them. As you read 2 Kings 32 -33 today, watch the Lord humble two kings and answer prayer in both palace and prison.

Assyria’s Coming Judgment and the Call to Read Devotionally

Tomorrow, we're going to see how Nahum will turn our attention back toward Assyria. The empire that mocked Jerusalem and terrorized the nations may appear untouchable, but God has already appointed its end.
