We were not on last week. So I asked a friend of mine about some podcasts that he could recommend because there was somebody, a friend of mine that was asking. And he said, well, I'd recommend that Gabe Hughes guy, but he's kind of spotty lately.

Oh, my goodness. So spotty. Sorry, guys. I don't even know what the good reason is for it. Well, the last week it was because I had a tooth pulled. Yes. So that tooth extraction, I think we were talking about.

I was hoping that it was not going to cause a delay in the podcast, but it did. Yeah. I had a day where I was like, I have an extra hole in my mouth and I'm not going to do anything today. Yeah. So that was the reason why stuff got delayed.

So I think some of you have been listening for a long time. No, if I record if I'm recording during the weekend, I miss like a Tuesday or a Wednesday or something like that. Wait until the next week. Yes.

And if it was Wednesday's episode you were waiting for, it'll pop back up on the Wednesday the following week. Yes. That's generally the way my lapses go. Yeah. So we missed last week's Q &A. I did respond to some emails in the meantime, even when I couldn't talk well because of my mouth.

She says, Gabe, been listening to the podcast for a couple of years. I'm not real tech savvy. I would love to figure out how to find studies by individual books of the Bible that you have completed. I have been following Grace To You, John MacArthur for many years, and I love being able to pull up messages when studying a book.

So now that I've got the website working, that's the next step. So when you go to the website, www .utt .com, and you click on podcast, it'll take you to a page where it's just the podcast player, and it has probably the most recent 10 episodes on there or something like that.

But I'm going to put underneath it links to all of past episodes. It's going to take me a while, so it'll be an ongoing work. But I've already kind of started a system where I can just kind of copy and paste what I already have.

Hopefully some of those will start coming up fairly soon. But since I've covered, I don't know how many books I've done now, 40? A lot. 40 books of the Bible now or something. I only have Revelation to go in New Testament.

That's the only thing I have left. But since I've been going through the Gospels, everybody's expecting me to do John soon. So I did Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and I did Acts since it's the sequel to Luke.

So then I'll go back and do John's corpus, the Johannian corpus, as it's called. So Revelation is the only New Testament book that I have yet to do on the podcast. And I'm teaching through it right now on Sunday nights, but I'm only doing that twice a month.

So it's kind of slow going. We're not even through chapter three. In fact, I finished chapter two this coming Sunday night. So I haven't even gotten to chapter three yet. And our kids are getting baptized on Sunday.

They are. We have three kids. Three of our children are getting baptized Sunday. It's going to be an action-packed weekend. Definitely. Yeah. Be looking for that. It'll be on the web page. This next question is a

Well, we'll do the other email here, and then I'll get to the voicemail. Okay. So this is anonymous. Gabe and Becky, thank you for your continued work at what? I find your teaching helpful to my walk and appreciate your perspective on cultural issues and the church.

I have a scenario for you, and this is a largely genericized question, though based on a real situation. Here is the scenario. Suppose there is a pastor whose wife initiates a divorce due to her adultery.

He is unable to stop the divorce due to the no-fault legal rules in all U .S. states. His church finds no contributing sin on his part. He prefers to forgive and seek reconciliation, but is unable to make that happen.

He believes his overall ministry may be limited now and in the future. Two of the elders at my church are divorced for biblical reasons not related to their own sin, and they are two of the most godly men I know.

I believe some prominent, respected teachers like Joel Beakey are also biblically divorced. I don't see why biblical divorce would be disqualifying. What is your view on this sort of situation? Would a pastor slash teacher who is divorced for biblical reasons, even against his will or choice, be disqualified to continue as a pastor or teacher?

Is there a biblical basis for such a position? I have been told there are circles within the Baptist church where a divorced teacher or speaker is not welcome, even on a guest basis. What would be the rationale for such a position?

I appreciate your insight and I thank you for your continued ministry and teaching. Well I have had friends who are pastors who have been previously divorced, and it was probably divorced for biblical reasons.

In fact, I've got one friend who was divorced before he even became a Christian, but the divorce was biblical. If he had been a Christian, if he had been in the church, it would have been considered a biblically qualified divorce in the sense that she committed adultery, and so he was biblically justified to therefore divorce her.

But when he became a Christian and then felt the call into the ministry, and he went to seminary, and then he's before his first ordination panel, I guess his only ordination panel. You don't really do that more than once, but he's before an ordination panel, and one of the guys on that panel was somebody that I knew.

So we had a mutual friend that was on that panel. And it was actually this guy that asked my friend the question and said, have you ever been divorced? And he said yes, and he's already bracing himself because he's kind of getting ready for what's coming.

And they said, can you explain to us what happened that led to this divorce? And so he explained the details, and our mutual friend said, okay, then that was biblically justified. And my friend said, it was.

It was biblically justified, but I don't want you to let me off the hook. I don't want you to think that that divorce happened because she did evil and she did wrong. I was wicked in our marriage, too.

So I just don't want you to get the impression that I was clean and she was not. So it was very humble of him to say, like, no, I did wickedly in my marriage also, even though I wasn't the one that committed adultery.

It was still both of us driving each other to this place that eventually the marriage fell apart. But she was the one that committed a sin that I therefore would have had biblical justification in order to get a divorce.

So anyway, all of that to say, I've known pastors that have been previously divorced, but it was for biblical reasons, and there's nothing that therefore disqualifies them based on the qualifications that we see in places like 1 Timothy 3 and Titus chapter 1.

Now, it's helpful, as this person has pointed out, that some godly men that he knows fit this particular scenario. The qualifications that are listed in scripture are about character and fitness for the office.

There really isn't anything in those list of qualifications that talk about past circumstances or even what may have happened to them before they became believers, which surely would have been pretty widespread in the Roman empire, especially as you have the gospel that's spreading about.

There may have been men with multiple marriages, multiple wives, and that's one of the reasons why it's stated in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 that he must be the husband of one wife. So if in the event that someone becomes a Christian who does have multiple wives, well, that's wonderful, but he's disqualified from becoming a pastor.

Right. And of course, this is the ideal that the pastor is representing to the church, that exactly what God had intended from the beginning, as Jesus talks about in Matthew 19. A man will leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

And what God has joined together, let no man separate. Right. So the pastor becomes the model, even for the church, of marriage the way that God had intended it. Paul's qualifications focus on being the husband of one wife, 1 Timothy 3, 2 and verse 12, and his children being obedient, Titus 1, 6.

And some have extrapolated this out into saying that a pastoral candidate cannot have been previously married or divorced. And I understand why. I mean, you do want him to be a picture, not just to people in the church, but even to people in the community, that when they look at that man, they see a man who is modeling marriage the way that God intended marriage to be.

Yes. And it's also a model of marriage the way that Christ loves his church, right? So the marriage between a pastor and his wife would also be a picture of Christ loving his church. I mean, that's every marriage, but especially the pastor of a church would model that.

Now, within reformed circles, the concern surrounding divorce is usually focused on a divorce that's initiated by the husband for improper reasons, like lusting after another woman or simply wanting out of the marriage.

It's the whole no fault thing that exists today. When a pastor's wife initiates divorce due to her own adultery, which is one of the two grounds that Jesus gives for dissolving a marriage, Matthew 5, 32, and as I mentioned, 19, verse nine, it can't be argued just on that ground that the pastor has violated his calling or his character.

If she has committed adultery and she doesn't want to reconcile, even if he does, then there's no fault on him. Right. And it should not be counted against him. But even in that scenario where the wife has sinned, but the husband slash elder has not, I believe it is still wise to examine the situation and determine that the man is free from guilt.

Right. You want to have the elders examine him. You want to have the rest of the church even have that opportunity to examine his character so that everyone can say, no, he did not do anything in this scenario that resulted in this divorce.

It was her. And he's above reproach. Yes, exactly. That's exactly it. Since that is the first qualification that he must have. He must be above reproach. Exactly. That's a great point. Yep. So surely he will feel like there are things that he could have done differently or better.

Of course. I mean, if he's a humble man, he will, he'll certainly, I wish I would have done this. Yeah. Could I have done that? Could I have done something to prevent this? But that does not mean he's guilty for her sin.

Now, if the divorce is biblical, meaning it occurred due to adultery or desertion and the pastor was not at fault, there is no clear biblical basis to disqualify him from continuing as a pastor or teacher.

However, now, and this is a personal thing. Okay. This isn't, this isn't something that scripture says. I'm just issuing a personal note here. I would expect that there should be some level of grief on his part that he would feel like he needs to take a temporary leave from the pulpit.

And there was an occasion. You mean like when it happens, when he's a pastor?

Yeah. So he's a pastor, his wife leaves, she's unfaithful. She doesn't want to reconcile. She leaves the marriage. Okay. I would still expect that on his part, there's some level of grief that he would want to take a leave of absence to grieve.

Okay. And feel like right now, I just, I kind of feel compromised that I can't be in the pulpit right now, or even allowing that period so that he can be examined and it can be said, his name is clear.

There is no reason why he is disqualified from preaching. Okay. So then in that circumstance, he's stepping away from the pulpit for a little while. There was an occasion that happened when I was in my twenties that I remember this happening to a particular pastor, someone very well known in the area where I lived and his wife left him.

And it was on her initiative, she left. I don't remember a lot of the details involving that. I can't even remember if she was unfaithful. While he was in your twenties. Yeah, I was in my twenties. I mean, this was 20 years ago.

So I don't remember everything that happened exactly, but he never missed a Sunday preaching. That's interesting. And I remember that bothered me. Yeah. Because I was like, why? Why wouldn't you want to just take some time to mourn?

But you're still in the pulpit preaching. I just don't know that that's. Distraction. Yeah. I mean, this is a major life upending thing that's happened to you. It's huge. Yeah. And I would expect there would be kind of a period of just, especially under the circumstance of, let me step away for a moment, allow myself to be examined.

Yeah. And then step back into the pulpit and continue preaching. Anyway, like I said, that's a personal note. That's not something that scripture says that you have to do. Right. And I don't want to get legalistic about it.

It just never set. Maybe it was the scenario itself, but it just never sat right with me. You know what I mean? But anyway, my view is that if the divorce was biblical due to adultery or desertion, and the pastor was not the offending party, then he is not disqualified by scripture from continuing in ministry.

The focus should remain on his current godliness and fitness as outlined elsewhere in the qualifications, whether that's 1 Timothy 3 or Titus 1 or 1 Peter 5 or 2 Timothy 2, anywhere else that we have a mention of qualifications for elders.

If his present character matches what's said in scripture, then there's no reason that he would have to be removed because of somebody else's sin. Yeah.

It shouldn't be held against him. Still situation by situation, but yeah, I agree.

Now, in those qualifications, like in 1 Timothy 3, where it says that he must manage his household well, though his wife cheated on him, did he mismanage his household in some way? Which is why, like I said, allow him to be examined so that you can say for certain that he's clear of any guilt here.

Yeah, of course. That makes sense. Right. But even in such... Give it some time. Yeah, even in such a circumstance, I mean, I could see where he would be temporarily disqualified if he didn't manage his own household well.

But if his wife cheated on him, his mismanaging of the household still does not excuse her sin. Right. Definitely. That's on her. Yeah, exactly. And that sin wouldn't... He didn't make her do that. Yeah, right, right.

Even though he may have poorly mismanaged his home. I guess this goes back to my saying that, you know, he'll probably have some level of feeling like, I could have done better. Yeah. I could have done this, but that still is a necessary qualification for a pastor that he'd be able to manage his own household, which includes not just his children, but even also his wife.

Right. So thank you for your question, Anonymous. I hope that was helpful. Let's go to this voicemail question. All righty. And this has to do with a preacher that I actually get a lot of questions about.

Okay. I probably get more questions about this guy than anybody else right now.

So here we go. Hey brother, this is Mike Wells out in Zephyrhills, Florida. I just want to say that I really love you guys and your ministry. I listen to you all the time on Spotify and I've been really edified by listening to you and going verse by verse through the Bible.

So my question today is for Brian Bryce Crawford. You may be familiar with him. He's this young guy, you know, claims to be an evangelist, goes and gets a lot of speaking events and whatnot. I've got concerns about him.

I just don't know how to put it into words. Maybe you're really good at that. You know, I think he's a sincere young man. I just think that he's really not mature enough for the level of influence he has.

I think that he's received way too big of a platform for someone in his spiritual development, what have you. It seems like he has some influences by some charismatic folk out there. I don't know. I don't encourage people to listen to him and follow his ways.

I just really want to hear your thoughts and maybe you can put out a helpful resource. I don't know. But thank you so much for all you do. God bless your brother.

Thank you, Mike. And yeah, like I said, I get a lot of questions right now about Bryce Crawford.

Well, this is the first time I'm hearing about him, I think.

Well, I've told you about him. I do live under a rock though. So he's got a very, very popular YouTube channel. So first of all, this guy, he's only 22. Okay. And he is your typical charismatic street evangelist.

Okay. So when you've seen me in the past, like going back 15 years now, when I was responding to guys like Todd White. Yes. Or any of the Bethel Church guys or Cindy Jacobs, any of these new apostolic reformation kooks.

For us in Kansas, it was the International House of Prayer. Yes. And we even went out there to Kansas City and we're ministering to people who are coming out of IHOP. Yeah. All that kind of crowd.

This guy is just like them. Oh, okay. There's really no difference. Coming out of that or in that? No, he's in that group. He's in that crowd. Okay, thanks.

So it's just like it. I mean, when I watch videos from him and I see the way that he does his street evangelism, I'm like, okay, yeah. I mean, this is the same stuff I've been responding to for 15 years.

Just different guy, different face. Sure. But he's really, really young. His YouTube channel exploded. I don't remember how long ago this was when he kind of first broke out on the scene. I started hearing about him last year, maybe two years ago.

It's been since we've moved to Arizona that I've heard of him. And I think the first stuff that I heard from him was preaching. Like he was standing up in front of churches and preaching. And people were sending me his sermons going, have you seen this guy?

And it was before he was like big on YouTube. I think even before he had his own YouTube channel. So already he was starting to get people's attention before even starting his own channel. But now he's got videos that have millions of views.

Just this week, he posted an interview where he sat down with Trent Horn of Catholic Answers. Okay. Like he is the Catholic apologist guy on YouTube. Okay. Trent Horn is probably the most well-known among them.

This interview had nearly a half million views already after two days. Oh, wow. That's how big Bryce's channel is and the fact that he's talking with Trent Horn. And the problem with the whole interview, I listened to it, two hours and 37 minutes.

That's lengthy. It was a long interview and it was a slog to get through it too. But I had some driving to do this week and I had some downtime in some other places in the shower. I listened to it a little bit.

So it took me a couple of days, but I got all the way through this interview. It's not a debate. Like if you knew nothing else about Trent Horn or Bryce Crawford going into that interview, that's two hours and 37 minutes of Trent Horn talking about why you should join the Catholic church.

Oh, wow. That's all it is. Bryce doesn't give hardly any pushback to anything. Oh, okay. Bryce is definitely not trying to win Trent over to his side, but Trent very much is trying to get Bryce to come over to his side.

So that video has the potential of drawing people into the false Roman Catholic church. Yeah. But nobody's gonna be drawn to Bryce's side through that video, even though Bryce's side is a problem too.

Yeah. I think one of the interviews he's most well-known for is he got the chance to sit down with Kenneth Copeland. I think that was just a month or two ago. And it was like the first interview Kenneth Copeland's done in 10 or 20 years or something.

Oh, wow. It's been a long time since he's done a sit-down interview. And it's with this kid. It's with a 22-year-old Bryce Crawford because of the size of his YouTube channel and because of the street evangelism things like that that he's done.

He's very charismatic, as I mentioned, very much on the New Apostolic Reformation side. He's kind of syncretistic. So the fact that he's talking to Kenneth Copeland in one interview, Trent Horn in another interview, he doesn't push back on any of these guys.

He just kind of feels like we all have this common ground. We all just love Jesus, you know? Then it's gonna create this kind of syncretism where people are gonna have like a hodgepodge of a lot of different spiritistic ideas.

Okay. Which is largely charismaticism. American charismaticism is a lot of that. American Roman Catholicism is a lot of that. So Roman Catholics that I know will draw in a lot of different spiritual ideas.

They'll draw stuff even from charismatic Protestants. So Bryce is gonna be furthering that kind of idea further and further away from anything confessional, even biblically solid. Although he'll use a lot of scripture and he'll try to base the things that he believes and whatnot in scripture, but it's still feelings-driven.

And even in that interview that he did with Trent Horn, he said that a lot. I noticed that phrase anytime he was like somewhat arguing with Trent, but not really. Just, it doesn't even seem like he's arguing.

He's just giving a response for, here's why I don't believe that or here's why I'm on this side of it. Okay. And he'll say, I'll feel like, I feel like da-da-da-da-da. Oh. I feel like, and over and over again.

He said that again and again. Yikes. In response to a lot of Horn stuff. Trent Horn is very, very polished. He is an excellent, very seasoned debater and he knows his stuff on the Catholic side very, very well.

And so you really need to know what you believe about your side. Right. In order to hold your ground and have a conversation with a guy like Trent Horn. Horn is very smart. And Bryce is 22, immature, doesn't have a confessional standard that he can even come back to.

Very limited knowledge on scripture. And so did not do well in that interview at all. So it was basically like a whole PR sit down for the Roman Catholic church.

Two hour and 37 minutes.

Two hours and 37 minutes of it. With two of the biggest, I want to say Christian, even though Trent Horn is Roman Catholic, but like in the Christian sphere of things, two of the biggest podcasters out there joining together.

And it was very much the best opportunity that Trent Horn had to lay down his appeal to join the Roman Catholic church.

Wow, that's astounding.

That's just a massive immaturity on Bryce's part that he had no idea how to even respond to those things or hold his own.

I mean, even if you go through with it and you have the interview, why would you post it?

Yeah, I'm sure there's.

I'm just saying there is an option to not post.

I don't think he had any problem with it. I think he thought it was great. In fact, the interview is titled, oh, I don't have it up in front of me here, but the interview is titled something like he challenged everything that I believe.

Okay. So he even gives credit to Trent Horn in the title.

Well, there's nothing wrong with challenging it, but can you stand on your two feet? Yeah, right.

So on the gospel. He even presents the video as, boy, this guy, you ought to listen to him. You ought to listen to what he has to say. That's sad. And same with interviewing Ken Copeland. I did not watch all of that interview.

I only got clips of it, but with the same thing there, he doesn't push back on Ken Copeland. So people are going to come away from that thinking. Well, that's probably why he did the interview. Of course.

Yeah, that's why Ken Copeland's team agreed to do it. Right. If Copeland hasn't done an interview in a decade. Right. Well, we're only going to do it with this kid because it's going to be a good interview.

Right, exactly. And so Crawford is really giving a platform to all of these guys. And it's like, you'll see a number of YouTubers that just kind of have this nice little club with one another, and we're just going to bolster each other, but not really push back on any ideas.

Yeah. We don't want that to be rude. And it was not a debate. It was not in any way a debate. So there's Was it supposed to be a debate? I mean, I would expect pushback of some kind. At least Fair, yeah.

When Trent Horn is presenting transubstantiation, like there's nothing on Bryce's part to say, that sounds like idolatry to me, you know? Well, does he even know? Well, he did say, yeah, he said in the interview something like, okay, well, I'm kind of confused about the whole thing.

I like it changing into Jesus' body and turning into Jesus' blood. Okay, so see, he didn't really know. And Trent Horn laid out like church history. Bryce is not even able to push back on any of that.

Well, I don't think that's correct, even what the early church father said. He doesn't have any knowledge of any of that. So you have a very immature young man who's got a huge YouTube following and looks like that, look, we can all be Christians together.

Yeah. Even very false, idolatrous ideas, he's presenting as Christianity. We all love the same Jesus. We can be religious together. Yeah, right, yeah, right. And again, I think that Mike is right. And the question that he's asking, it seems like he's just gonna lead a lot of people in the wrong direction.

Now I have covered, on this podcast somewhere, I don't remember how many episodes ago this was, but I had mentioned that Bryce was in my own backyard. He was up at Arizona State University, just about 30 or 40 minutes away from here.

And if I had known that he was gonna be there, I would have gone up, but he did like open evangelism out there in kind of the student square. Okay. I've been on that campus a few times. But I played the clips of him sharing the gospel, and I prefaced it by saying, this is going to be a mess.

Like this really is a word salad. I don't know why anybody, I don't know how anyone can listen to this and actually come away from it thinking that you heard the gospel. It almost felt like Bryce is just trying to get certain key points in there.

Oh, I gotta mention this, I gotta mention this. But it's all just kind of jumbled together. And you're like, how does anybody become a Christian listening to that? Yeah, you had some key evangelical points in there.

But how do you bring anybody to a knowledge of their sin and faith in Jesus Christ with what he said there? I'm not gonna play that again. I do wanna do a video on this. So something longer and then playing clips from Bryce so that you can see them and you can get an idea of what a mess he is.

But let me play part of this. So one of the biggest videos that he has, I think this was the one that kind of launched him into recognition, especially among charismatics. He went to the Satanic Temple in Massachusetts.

Oh, wow, okay. And he lives in California. So he goes all the way across the country. Goodness. Just to go to the Satanic Temple. Wow. Now that has a million views. Then he's got a couple of other videos with even more views than that.

But that was kind of the one that launched him into the stratosphere of charismatic recognition. Right. So I also watched an interview that he did with Brandon Lake. But yeah, I won't get into that one.

Anyway, this is not that video. This is not the one that he goes to the Satanic Temple. This is the second time he goes to the Satanic Temple. Oh, well, there you go. So after that video was big, he does another one.

This one doesn't have as many views. It's 312 ,000. Only. Only. Yeah, I've got only... That's a lot. I have one video over that amount. I don't have videos that get quite as high as some of the ones that he had.

Well, the one I did with Justin Peters about The Chosen. I think we have a half million on that one. But that's not on my channel. Anyway. So anyway, here's Bryce infiltrating the Satanic Temple. And some of this is just...

It's pretty comical.

Here we go. Hang on. But I'm really pumped and excited to go back. Because listen, the devil is making himself known. The devil has overplayed his hand. And he's trying to appear as an angel of light.

Oh, the Satanic Temple. We're pro-choice. We're pro-this. We're pro-that. But really, it's a disguise. And it's demonic. So we're going to go in there, rebuke the demons. Pray over the building. And ask that every human being that goes into that Satanic Temple.

Whether they have good intentions or bad intentions. That they get hit with the most holy spirit conviction they've ever felt in their life. To leave and that they feel the darkness in that area. So pray for us if you see this video.

Especially pray for us after the video comes out. Because it will have been a while. We'll probably be getting spiritually attacked. So all right. Let's go to Satanic Temple. Let's do this thing. All right.

So we've got a little predicament going into the Satanic Temple right now. Don't know if you guys know this. But if you just look up Satanic Temple, we're like the second video that pops up. So there's absolutely no way on earth that they don't know who we are.

And that they don't want us to go in there. So we got a couple things prepared beforehand.

Okay. First of all, he's wearing a t-shirt that says, I hate Satan. Yeah, that might give it away. It's not really inconspicuous. But as they're about to go back into this place, here's his strategy.

Here's his idea.

Obviously have to cover my I hate Satan shirt when we walk in. I got a COVID mask to wear so that I could cover my face. And I might wear a hat just so that when we get in, because I want to make sure we get in the temple so that we can plead the blood of Jesus over that place.
