We're going to look in the book of Isaiah, please, in chapter 1 to start. Isaiah in chapter 1, and we're going to read together at verse number 18. Isaiah 1 verse 18,. "'Come now and let us reason together, saith the Lord.
Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.'". "'Come now and let us reason together.'". Chapter 45, please. Isaiah 45 and verse number 22.
"'Look unto Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth. For I am God, and there is none else. Look unto Me.'". Matthew, please, chapter 11, verse number 28. Lord Jesus says, "'Come unto Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.'".
And one more in the gospel of Luke, chapter 13. Luke 13, verse 24. "'Strive to enter in at the straight gate. For many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in and shall not be able. When once the master of the house has risen up and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without and to knock at the door, saying, "'Lord, Lord, open unto us.'.
And he shall answer and say unto you, "'I know you not, whence ye are.'. Then shall they begin to say, 'We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know not whence ye are.
Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. And there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.'".
Lord, bless to us the reading of his precious word. I think I'll start tonight in Luke. I usually end in Luke when it comes to these words of depart before it seems to be a departing message. But I'd like to look at this audience here tonight.
And as I sat there looking over who had stayed, and it was wonderful to see so many young people stay. And as we've been reminded of future events today, and the coming of the Lord that draws nigh, when he's going to come to the air, he's going to give the shout, and God's people will be taken from this earth, caught up to meet the Lord forever in the air.
Can you imagine what it would be to be left behind? Christians gone. The last soul in the day of grace saved. And a door would be shut. And it will shut faster than any door has ever shut. A door that tonight is as wide open as it has ever been.
It has not closed but a fraction of an inch. It is as wide open tonight as it was when Christ died and was buried and rose again. But yet in that moment, in that twinkling of an eye, there'll be that door that'll be shut.
And those who are outside of Christ, those that are yet in their sins, having heard the gospel and rejected the truth and rejected the love of God, that door will be shut. It'll be shut. I remember growing up listening to the gospel.
I remember going to mom and dad's door. They slept downstairs and we were upstairs. And I would go to the bathroom and I'd go by mom and dad's door so I could stop to take a good listen. Listen if I could hear him breathing.
Just hoping that there might be a snore from the bedroom that the Lord hadn't come. You see, he says, depart from me. Depart from me. There are those in his day that he's exhorting to strive to enter in.
Some will seek and they'll never find it. And there'll be those that knock on the outside and he'll say, depart from me, I never knew you. Depart from me. Go away. Go away. Depart from me. I can't imagine what that must be like.
Oh, they say, Lord, Lord, open unto us. They call him by the right name. But they never had relationship with him. We've done mighty things in your name. We've done wonderful things in your name. He says, no, you're workers of iniquity.
And what they had been trusting in has let them down. What they had relied upon, that they were right with God, was not the Lord Jesus Christ. It was something else. And they miss it. And he says, depart.
Dear young people tonight, you don't realize how close this moment is. You don't know how close the Lord's coming in reality really is. It is truly any minutes, any moments. And it is real. We implore you tonight to consider eternity.
Consider your sin. Consider the brevity of time. For if the Lord would come tonight, it would be depart from me. Depart from me. What a word of departing. No further chance of entering in. No further chance of salvation.
Just a certain fearful looking forward to judgment for all eternity. Will it be you? Will it be you that depart from me? I never knew you. Someone who is shut out. You sing the song in children's meetings, one door and only one, yet its sides are two.
Inside and outside, which side are you? Those that will be shut out. When we come to Isaiah, we've got God saying, come now let us reason together. And it seems in a sense a strange thing that God would reason with men.
And as we read it together, he says, come now and let us reason together, saith the Lord. So if there's going to be a discussion, if there's going to be a communication between God and men, God goes first in this verse.
He says, come now and let us reason together. And then he says what the issue is. And then he says what's on his mind. He says what he notices. He says, you come, let us reason together. And he goes first.
He goes first. What does he say? He says, though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. You see, God has something to say. God has been trying to speak time and time again.
God speaks once, yea, twice, and men perceive it not. And he says again tonight. He says, come now, let us reason together. He said, this is the problem. He finds it. He exposes it. He said, our sins.
Now, if you were really convicted that God was speaking to you tonight through this scripture, how would you answer that? God says, come now, let us reason together. And he says, your sins are like scarlet, but they could be as white as snow.
They're red like crimson. They could be as wool. And he says, he stopped. And he's waiting for you to answer. What are you going to say? God's giving you a chance. What are you going to say? Are you going to be like Adam in the garden and blame the woman?
She made me do it. Someone else made me do it. Of the serpent, he beguiled me. What would be your response to God in his statement? He says, let us reason together. Your sins are the problem, but they can be made as white as snow.
How would you answer that? Friend, tonight there's only one answer that a sinner can give. It's just this. God be merciful to me, the sinner. God be merciful to me, the sinner. You see, there is no arguing with God.
And God in his loving kindness is speaking tonight. And he's exposing the problem of all mankind. He's exposing your problem tonight. It's your personal sin that has separated you from God. And he says, let's reason together.
I see your sin. It's red like crimson. It sticks out. It has my attention, but it can be as white as snow. What's your argument? Oh, friend, your only hope is to plead for the mercy of God tonight. God be merciful to me, the sinner.
God be merciful. God is not interested in hearing all of our excuses for our sin. He's not interested in all the justification that we give for our actions. God is calling us to be real. God is calling us to be honest.
He says, our sin is the problem. Friend, what about yours tonight? Some of you, we've preached that for weeks and weeks in a series of meetings in this area. Months and months, really. And yet you're still in your sin.
And God still has something to say to you tonight. He says, come now, let us reason together, saith the Lord. He has something to say. Are you listening? Are you listening? He has something to say to you.
He wants to bring to your attention tonight, like never before, the reality of your sin against him. The reality of the danger that you're in in your sin. For he said, the Savior said, if you die in your sin where I am, you cannot come.
He has something to say. When we come to chapter 45 and there, he says, look unto me and be saved all the ends of the earth. For I am God and there is none else. He says, look, he has something to show.
You can remember these simple points, can't you? You can remember about someone he says, depart from and to be shut out. You can remember that he says, come, let us reason. I have something to say. Look unto me and be saved all the ends of the earth.
For I am God and there is none else. He has something that he wants you to see. He says, look unto me. He's telling sinners tonight to look to him entirely for salvation, to the eternal one, to the covenant keeping one, to the promise keeping one, to the one who is love.
And God says, look unto me and be saved to be saved. Where are you looking for salvation tonight? To whom are you looking? Oh, from time to time. And I heard it on there on the Christian radio the other day, and it just broke my heart again.
And the preacher was preaching and exhorting his congregation to go and grab ahold of someone's hand and try to lead him to the Lord by having him say a prayer. And he was all encouraging all of this.
And then he said something that just terrified me. He said, what if it doesn't stick? In other words, what if they make a false profession and they have no life? Who are you looking to for salvation tonight?
You're not looking to the words of a man. You're not looking for the confidence and the propping up of a man to tell you that you're saved, I hope. Never let a man tell you that you're saved. That's God's work.
That's the work of the Spirit of God. And tonight, friend, you need to get it from God. He says, look unto me and trust yourself to me. Look to me and be saved. All the ends of the earth to be rescued, to be delivered, to be saved.
To be saved. Who? All the ends of the earth. I've wondered with a earth that is a sphere, where's the end? Is it the north or the south or the east or is it the west? Oh, it's every place around this whole wide world, isn't it?
But you know, when you think of the ends of the earth, I think of those that are about to leave this earth. Those that are about to go out into eternity. He says, look unto me. Those that are about to take their last breath.
Those that are about... And someone says, that's not me. How do you know that's not you? How do you know but you'll be the next one into eternity? You're up near Viroqua where we're preaching. They buried a 25-year-old man two and a half weeks ago.
Young man, 25 years old. You see, friend, tonight the reality is this. You and I are just, each and every one of us, just a heartbeat from eternity. Just one heartbeat. Sometimes they call it the last breath or the last gasp of air.
But my friend, you listen, you're at the very edge. You're at the very edge. I met with a man many years ago. He was in a hospital and he was there on every machine in the ICU. I watched the blood come out of his body and go through the dialysis machine.
He had the ventilator. He had everything. I had talked to the man about his soul from time to time. I used to work for him. And there he was laying there with a massive infection raging through his body.
And his eyes were like saucers. And he couldn't talk. And I went and I grabbed him by the hand and I squeezed and I said, Ted, can you hear me? And he squeezed it back. I said, Ted, you're about to go out into eternity.
Are you ready to meet God? And I said, did you hear me? And I squeezed his hand. And I told him as plain as I could, as simply as I could, that his sin was taking him away from God and down to hell. And that his religion could never save him.
And all of his trusting in the man and the priest and all the men that he had his trust in that could take his sin away and all the men that he had trusted that could do something for him, that there was not one.
And tonight God says, look unto me and be saved. Dear sinner, tonight, look to God for salvation. Look entirely to God for salvation. And I told Ted about the Savior, the one who died upon the cross, the one who was crowned with thorns upon the tree.
And I said, Ted, do you understand? And he squeezes my hand. The man was on the very edge of earth and he was going to go out and meet God. And what if it was you? My grandparents both passed away in the past year.
And in hospice comes in. They put him on morphine. And I sit and watch grandma there and grandpa there. They died six months apart, both in heaven today. And there they were on their morphine. And they were comfortable in the body.
And they look like they were resting. And I thought, what if that was some poor person in their sins? Whose family was trying to make them comfortable at the end of life. And they didn't have the wherewithal to think about eternity.
Dear sinner, you need to get to Christ tonight. What must it be like to have to be the one with the power of medical attorney or a parent or a guardian and have a dear loved one in that condition? In their sins, on their way to hell.
And they can't even think. God says, look unto me and be saved. All the ends of the earth for I am God and there is none else. There is none else. He is a savior, God. He is your creator. He is the one that made you for his honor and for his glory.
And yet you rebel against him. And you sin against him. Look to him, friend. He has the power to save. And we come finally to Matthew chapter 11. In the words of the savior, he says, come unto me. Come unto me, all you that labor under heavy laden.
And I will give you rest. Come. He has something to give. He has something to give. Oh, yes, God has something to say. Yes, God has something he wants to show you. He wants to show you salvation. And now we come to the Lord Jesus Christ and he has something to give.
He wants to give rest. Maybe there's someone here and you wanted rest from your sin for a long time. And the burden of your sin has been great and the weight of it has been heavy. And the sleepless nights and the restless days.
And all you can think about is your sin. To you, he says, come unto me. All you that labor under heavy laden and I will give you rest. You see, he's giving a promise to the listener. He's giving a promise to the one that comes.
And the promise is that he will give rest. How is it that the Lord Jesus can give rest from sin? How is it that he can relieve a person from their guilt to rid them of their shame? You see, at the cross of Calvary, the Savior suffered.
The Savior was lifted up. The Savior died upon the cross. And there at the cross of Lord Jesus Christ, he really had no rest, did he? And there he was made sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
There our sin was laid upon him. For all we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned everyone to his own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. And there at the cross of Calvary, the weight and the burden of sin and the sin question was settled once and for all.
When the sinless one died in the stead of the guilty, in the place of the sinner. And he can give rest tonight. You see, in the context of this chapter, there's at least three different groups of people that would long to have rest if they were convicted of their actions.
He talks about the children in the marketplace. And they didn't like it when John the Baptist came preaching repentance. And they didn't like it when the Lord Jesus was preaching the gospel of the kingdom.
Whether it was a happy note or a sad note, they weren't interested in what was being conveyed. And maybe that's been you your entire life. But if you're interested in salvation, he says this, come now, let us reason together.
And the Savior says, come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. You see, he can give rest because he has done the work. He can give rest because he has accomplished the labor.
He has accomplished all things that were required for your salvation and mine. And you can have rest tonight. And then there were cities that were so privileged. And they were privileged because the Lord Jesus had moved among them.
And they would have saw miracles that he had done. They would have been privileged to hear his teaching. But yet it had no effect upon them. And the Lord Jesus rebukes them for their privilege and their responsibility.
And the sinful cities of the Old Testament. He says, be more tolerable for them in the day of judgment than for you. Could I put that into terms that you might understand might be personal here tonight?
Oh, the truth that you've heard. Growing up in a Christian home and hearing the gospel. Could I say probably 100 times a year? Most of you here. Once a week and in a series for a month or two months. And there are people that have never heard the gospel.
You are greatly responsible for what you have heard. For he that believes not the record that God has given of his son, calleth God a liar. He says, come. And then there's a group of people that the Lord is pleased that they have not had salvation revealed to them because they are the wise and the prudent.
And maybe someone here, you can't figure out God's salvation. And you're longing to be saved. And you're there at your wit's end. He says, come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden. And I will give you rest.
He has something to give tonight. The freedom from sin. The forgiveness of sin. Vast and full and free salvation. For he himself has accomplished the work at the cross that no one could accomplish. He has satisfied God's throne.
And God's righteous demands for our sin has been paid, has been meted out there. And now he has the authority, the power on earth to forgive sins. He can forgive you tonight. You can have rest tonight.
And he has promised. When he says, come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden. I will give you rest. He has something to give. A gift is a marvelous thing. Very precious thing. Some people don't know how to take a gift.
It's a humbling thing. But you could be saved. God wants you to be saved. He says, I have something to say. Your sin is the problem. I have something I want to show you. He says, look unto me and be saved.
All the ends of the earth. And Christ says, I have something to give. I have something to give. He gave himself a sacrifice for our sin. Trust him tonight and know him as your savior. And have eternal rest with the forgiveness of sins.
