04:55
Well, welcome. I know we've got a lot of our church family here, but I also see a great many guests.
05:02
I just want to welcome you to Sunnyside Baptist Church. This is our annual Christmas carols and lessons.
05:09
We've been doing this for a while, and I'm just always very thankful to those who have set aside a great deal of time out of this busy holiday season to labor, to practice, and to plan and put this all together.
05:23
And so you see that there's a lot of equipment has been precisely arranged for us.
05:29
I want to thank Edgar for his labor, his service, and Joel for helping him.
05:34
And I really appreciate Lisa and the choir spending their
05:39
Sunday nights away from the normal fellowship to practice and to get ready to help us celebrate this season and the birth of Christ.
05:48
And I want to thank my brother for playing the piano, coming and helping us today, and it's a blessing to have him and his family here tonight.
05:58
Now, a lot of you already have candles. If you haven't grabbed a candle yet, there's a few out there in the foyer if you want one for later.
06:06
You'll notice in your program that there's a moment there where you have a bunch of Christmas carols set between the two candles, and that'll be the time to light your candle.
06:18
If it's a real one, the flame will be moving around. If you have one of the battery -powered ones, then you don't have to wait.
06:27
And we'll turn the lights down, we'll sing these carols together, and we'll carol to one another. You know, and part of this is, why all the fuss?
06:37
Yeah? Why all the fuss? Why all the busyness? Why is traffic so bad? Why all the planning and getting together?
06:46
Why do we do something like this that is just different than normal? And the answer is very simple.
06:52
When the fullness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, so that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
07:06
That's why. Because made in the image of God, we're accountable to him.
07:11
His law, which is simply the expression of his perfect holy character, is a crushing weight upon each and every one of us.
07:19
We cannot measure up. But at the right time, God sent forth his Son, born under the law, to live righteous and perfect in our place, for our sake, doing all that we could never do, and all we have to do is trust him.
07:35
And tonight, we're just going to rejoice in the gift that God has given. Let me pray for us, and then we will rejoice together.
07:42
Father, I thank you for gathering us together tonight. Thank you for safely providing for us to gather.
07:50
I pray for each one who is here. Please help us to truly know the joy of Christmas and rejoice in this gift of your
07:58
Son, Jesus Christ. I thank you again for all those who have been laboring and preparing for this time.
08:04
I pray an extra measure of grace to be upon them as you fill us with your Spirit so that we would honor and glorify you tonight.
08:13
And Lord, I pray that as we leave from this place, that you will have prepared our hearts to rejoice and celebrate the real reason for this time, the real reason for this season being
08:25
Jesus Christ. I pray these things in his name. Amen. Waiting.
08:46
Longing. In the years before the birth of Christ, the world waited in darkness as prophets came on the scene and, moved by the
08:55
Holy Spirit, wrote about the promised Messiah. Isaiah said, he would be born of a virgin and would be called
09:03
Emmanuel, God with us. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
09:12
Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them light has shone. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called
09:27
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
09:35
Of the increase of his government and of peace, there will be no end. On the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.
09:49
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Therefore, the
09:55
Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name
10:04
Emmanuel. O come,
10:34
O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive David, till the
10:57
Son of God appear.
12:13
We gather this evening to celebrate. We celebrate the birth of a child who came to our world more than 2 ,000 years ago.
12:21
We remember the fulfillment of prophecies made thousands of years before his birth.
12:28
We honor a plan for our redemption made by our great God before time began.
12:37
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
12:42
God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
12:53
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
13:05
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only
13:14
Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
13:26
Let us together sing, O come, all ye faithful. At last the time arrived.
16:20
Mary bore the holy child as the young couple traveled to Bethlehem.
16:26
Joseph accepted the responsibility of watching over his earthly footsteps. A feeding trough became his bed, and a host of angels sped from heaven to earth to announce the arrival of the newborn king.
16:41
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
16:48
This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. It all went to be registered, each to his own town.
16:57
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called
17:05
Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
17:15
And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
17:40
We've got three sets of Christmas melodies, and so this will be our first Christmas melody tonight.
17:45
We'll be singing Joy Has Dawned, Angels We Have Heard on High, and on that one we'll start with the chorus.
17:53
And the third song is Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Sing with us together. Hark the herald angels sing.
18:08
Joy has dawned upon earth's first creation.
18:18
God's salvation now unfurls hope for every nation.
18:26
God with earthly trouble won, God in seas of glory.
18:36
What a humble gift of heart, Jesus born of Mary.
18:47
Son of man, Son of man, given as a ransom.
18:56
Men in silence, God and men, Christ our mighty champion.
19:05
What a Savior, what a friend, what a glorious mystery.
19:14
Once a babe in Bethlehem, now the
19:20
Lord of history. Oh, then shall
19:35
His name, Oh, then shall
19:48
His name angels we have heard sweetly singing o 'er the plains and the mountains in reply echo with their joyous strains.
20:16
Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis
20:34
Deo. Come to Bethlehem and see
20:43
Him whose birth the angels sing. Come adore on Christ the
20:53
Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in excelsis
21:07
Deo. Gloria in excelsis
21:20
Deo. Peace on earth and mercy mild,
21:39
God and sinners reconciled. Joyful all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies.
21:52
With angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem.
22:01
Oh, let all angels sing glory to the newborn
22:09
King. Christ, by highest heaven adored,
22:16
Christ the everlasting Lord. Late in time behold
22:23
Him born, offspring of the virgin's womb.
22:29
Veiled in flesh, Lord God, as seen, veiled in glory,
22:35
King of kings. Created to live and to dwell,
22:41
Jesus, our Emmanuel. Oh, let all angels sing glory to the newborn
22:54
King. Hail the heaven -born Prince of Peace.
23:01
Hail the Son of Righteousness. Light and life to all
23:13
His ways. Let Him raise His glory high.
23:19
Born that man from all the sons of earth, born to live and serve the world.
23:33
Oh, let all angels sing glory to the newborn
23:41
King. He takes
24:16
His first breath. Close to her be a stranger.
24:39
In the seventh of the stars.
25:01
Like a shrine He takes His first breath.
25:06
Held by His mother helpless. Close to her beating heart.
25:14
Jesus, our
25:22
Savior. How to turn me, a stranger, into a child of God.
25:44
Oh, let all angels sing glory to the newborn
25:55
King. Let's fill with our smiles and sorrows.
26:02
Show Him that is true and right.
26:09
Jesus, take away every darkness. Steady my simple footsteps.
26:18
That I might in Your goodness live as a child of God.
26:26
Jesus, take away every darkness. Steady my simple footsteps.
26:35
That I might in Your goodness live as a child of God.
26:59
It's in the congregation. Please join us in singing some familiar Christmas carols that tell of that holy night, the night that Jesus was born.
27:20
Our second trio is A Little Town of Bethlehem. It came upon a midnight clear in the first Noel.
27:27
O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lying
27:37
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
27:42
The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth
27:52
The everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years
28:02
Are met in thee tonight He sent to us to pray
28:18
Cast out our sin and enter in He born in us today
28:28
Give ye the Christmas angels
28:34
The great glad tidings tell Whom come to us, abide with us
28:44
Our Lord Emmanuel He is born,
29:00
O Lord From angels many To touch their hearts of gold
29:11
Peace on earth, goodwill to all
29:23
In silence, stillness slain To hear the angels sing
29:31
But farewell, we did say
29:44
Was to certain poor shepherds In fields as they lay
29:51
In fields as they lay
30:05
Jesus was born.
31:29
Human flesh wrapped around the Eternal and the Divine. Few saw it at the time, and those who did didn't understand who he was.
31:40
But looking at it tonight, all this time later, it's impossible to think of it without awe and wonder at the miracle.
31:52
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night.
31:58
And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.
32:07
And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
32:15
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the
32:21
Lord. And this will be a sign for you. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.
32:30
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising
32:35
God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.
32:47
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,
32:53
Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the
32:58
Lord has made known to us. And they went with haste and found
33:04
Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.
33:16
And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.
33:27
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen as it had been told them.
33:36
With the shepherds, let us come and worship Jesus. This song is going to be
33:50
Angels from the Realm of Glory and While Shepherds Watch Their Flocks. Angels from the realms of glory
34:10
Wing your flight o 'er all the earth To save creation's glory
34:19
Now proclaim Messiah's birth Christ the newborn
34:31
King Shepherds in the fields abiding
34:38
While shepherds watch their flocks
36:35
Rejoice with heart and soul and voice Hear ye, hear to what we say
36:43
Jesus Christ is born today Alms and peace before Him bow
36:49
And He is in the manger now Christ is born today
36:55
Christ is born today Rejoice with heart and soul and voice
37:13
Now ye hear of endless bliss Jesus Christ was born for this
37:18
He has opened heaven's door And man is blessed forevermore
37:24
Christ was born for this Christ was born for this
37:30
Christ was born for this
38:27
Rejoice with heart and soul and voice Hear ye, hear to what we say
38:38
Jesus Christ is born today
38:44
Alms and peace before Him bow Good Christian men rejoice
38:51
With heart and soul and voice Hear ye, hear to what we say
38:57
Jesus Christ is born today Alms and peace before Him bow
39:03
And He is in the manger now Christ is born today Christ is born today
39:10
Christ is born today Christ is born today
39:27
Of course,
39:36
Jesus didn't remain a baby. He was divine, fully God, but He was also fully human.
39:43
And He grew and experienced life on earth just like other humans, except for one critically important difference.
39:51
Jesus never sinned. He lived a perfect, sinless human life.
39:58
God sent Jesus to show us the way to live. However, because every human since Adam has been born with sin in their heart, we cannot be in fellowship with a holy
40:11
God. God's holiness requires payment for sin.
40:17
Because we could never pay that debt on our own, God provided a perfect sacrifice,
40:24
His only begotten Son. Jesus took the debt of our sin upon Himself and paid for it with His life.
40:34
He died the death that every human deserves. But when we trust in Him as our
40:40
Savior, He gives to us the righteousness of His life, His perfect, sinless life.
40:48
At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of a baby. However, the cause of the celebration is that He became our
40:56
Redeemer. As a grown man, Jesus willingly gave up His life on the cross and defeated the curse of sin when
41:05
God raised Him from the dead. For all who trust in Him as Savior, we are promised that same victory over death and eternal life with God forever.
41:16
We look forward to forever praising the One who gave us life, who redeemed us from death, our
41:23
Redeemer, Jesus, God's own Son. For our sake,
41:30
He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
41:39
He is our
42:00
Redeemer Jesus, God's own
42:07
Son Precious Lamb of God Messiah, oh
42:23
Jesus, my Redeemer Precious Lamb of God Messiah, oh
42:42
For sinners slain Thank you,
42:49

51:44
Father, I thank You for the time that You've given us here tonight, an opportunity to sing Your praises, to sing praises to Jesus Christ, our
51:53
Savior, the light of the world. We pray that You would be honored and lifted up,
51:59
Jesus Christ, in this season, as we rejoice in Your advent and Your coming.
52:04
We rejoice in Your righteous life, in Your redeeming death, in Your victorious resurrection, in Your glorious ascension, and in Your victorious reign.
52:17
You are everything to this world. You are everything to us. We thank
52:23
You for this most special season, and we give You glory. I pray that You would bless us as we depart from this place, and please receive this final song of honor to You.
52:34
We pray these things in Your name. Amen. Joy to the world, the
52:51
Lord is come. Let earth receive her
52:59
Heaven, Every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing,
53:06
And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and heaven and nature sing.
53:15
He rules the world with truth and grace,
53:21
And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness,
53:32
And wonders, wonders of His love.
