Welcome to five -minute Bible your daily guide for your daily reading today's February the 22nd
We'll be looking at Leviticus 26 through 27 Now today's reading brings
Leviticus to its thunderous covenant conclusion for 26 chapters God has shown Israel how to live with him in their midst through sacrifice and priesthood and purity and justice and worship now in Leviticus 26 through 27
He's gonna pull back the curtain and say to them in essence. Here's the road to life or the road to ruin
The choice is yours and that's not merely a law. That's just what life looks like in the
Covenant for instance Leviticus 26 lays out the Covenant in unmistakable clarity if Israel walks in obedience
And if they honor God's statutes and reject the idols and false gods Then God is gonna promise blessings to them rain in its season abundant crops and peace in the land victory over enemies
Multiplying families that are fruitful and more importantly his presence is gonna dwell among them
He even says I will walk among you and be your God Which echoes back to Eden where God walks with Adam and Eve and talks with them and is their
God now If they despise him if they reject his covenant and his statues and if they persist in their rebellion
Then discipline is going to come in escalating waves first it's gonna come in frustration then fear then famine then invasion then devastation and then finally in exile the land will
Actually vomit them out and yet even at their lowest point scattered among their enemies
God says something astonishing to them if they confess and if they humble themselves and if they acknowledge their guilt
Then he will remember his covenant with Abraham Isaac and Jacob and he will restore them now
Judgment is severe, but abandonment is never final Leviticus 27 then the final chapter closes with laws about vows and dedicated offerings
If something is pledged to the Lord Well, it must be honored carefully and precisely because holiness includes our integrity
Worship includes our truthfulness and words spoken to God Absolutely matter the book ends quietly, but firmly covenant life is serious
Now as you read today, I want you to ask the following question What kind of future does covenant faithfulness produce and what kind does rebellion create?
Leviticus 26 through 27 shows us that obedience and disobedience are not abstract realities
They shape the future of generations. That's the central pattern here Which is blessing and discipline under covenant love
God is not volatile, but he is relational and blessings are not random rewards
They are fruit for walking in alignment with your creator Discipline therefore is not revenge.
It's the Escalating correction that's meant to bring you to repentance now
Notice the rhythm in chapter 26 after each wave of discipline God says if you still do not listen
Which means that the goal is restoration God is escalating judgment in order to get his people to repent
This speaks directly to our lives as well because we often interpret hardships as proof that God has left us but yet Leviticus would teach us otherwise for those in the covenant discipline is evidence of God's relational intimacy to try to bring you to repentance not his rejection of you and the choice set before Israel is stark and the same for us, but it's never loveless
Holiness leads to flourishing Rebellion leads to fracture humility opens the door to mercy and in that sense
Leviticus 26 through 27 Finds its ultimate resolution in Jesus the blessings that are promised for covenant obedience and loyalty are fulfilled
Perfectly in him because he is the only faithful son who walks in complete obedience to his father
But even more staggering than that the curses of the covenant rebellion Ultimately fall on him
Which is astounding the only perfect one the only one who ever deserved the blessings
Actually gains the curses the exile the shame the sword the abandonment all of it falls on him
He bears the covenant curse why? So that all of us could experience the covenant blessings so that all of us could be spared from the curse that we deserve and be given the
Freedom in the in the life that we never could earn Where Israel repeatedly failed and was scattered
Christ endured ultimate exile outside the camp So this people might be brought near and the vows of Leviticus 27 find their perfection in him as well
Christ consecrates himself fully and irrevocably to the father's will he does not retract his offering he completes it in the book of Leviticus ends with Consecration and warning the gospel reveals the one who fulfills both obedience accomplished and curse
Absorbed and as you read Leviticus 26 through 27 today, I want you to feel the weight of the covenant reality
Holiness is not decoration. It is a pathway to life and tomorrow we're gonna move into a new book the book of Numbers where redeemed people and Instructed people and warned people are gonna begin walking towards the promised land and we're gonna see how quickly fear settles in But with that read your
Bible carefully devotionally and joyfully and may the Lord use his word to sanctify you
