Sunday Sermon: The Spiritual Gifts of Exhortation and Contribution (Romans 12:8)

Romans 12 and the Purpose of Spiritual Gifts

Let us open our Bibles now to Romans chapter 12 as we continue our study of spiritual gifts. Again today at Romans 12 verses 3 through 8, focusing on the first part of verse 8 that mentions exhortation, the gifts of exhortation and the gifts of contribution in generosity.

My quote this morning to start things off comes from Thomas Watson, who said, every time you breathe, you inhale God's mercy. We remember God's mercy and his grace to us. And may it be that every time we even take a breath, we know of God's goodness to us.

And in his grace that he has dispensed to all of us, he has given to different persons, abilities, or spiritual giftings for the service of the body of Christ. As we study those things once again, let's read Romans chapter 12 verses 3 through 8.

If you would please stand in honor of the word of the King, the Apostle Paul writing to the church in Rome, and I'm reading from the English standard version, hear the word of the Lord. For by the grace given to me, I say to everyone among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

For as in one body, we have many members and the members do not all have the same function. So we, though many are one body in Christ and individually members, one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.

If prophecy in proportion to our faith, if service in our serving, the one who teaches in his teaching, the one who exhorts in his exhortation, the one who contributes in generosity, the one who leads with zeal and the one who does acts of mercy with cheerfulness.

You may be seated as we pray. Heavenly Father, we come once again to study what you have said to us concerning this dispensing of your grace to the members of your body. And each individually, we have all received the grace of God, but that grace has been appointed to us in respective ways so as to be gifted, to serve in a particular manner to benefit the body.

As we have been studying, as we've been reading about, these gifts are not to have a platform for ourselves or know what our personality should be in the body of Christ. It's not about finding our niche or our hobby and in some way make a name for myself in the church.

But rather these giftings are given for the purpose of serving each other. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14, for building up the body of Christ, it said also in Ephesians chapter 4 that we would build each other up in love, holding fast to the head who is Christ through whom every joint and every part of the body is joined together and is fed by Christ who has saved us and brought us together and made us his own.

We are unified together as one body, but we are still individual members made up of many parts. And so Lord, may you bless us to understand what our role would be and what ways we can serve. And as we go through each one of these spiritual gifts and even understand the categories that they represent, may we find something or some way that you have gifted to us to meet a need in your body and the service of one another and to the glory of Christ our King.

It is in Jesus name that we pray and all God's people said, amen. Brother Allen read for us this morning, the fruit of the spirit. And I appreciate that. He read about that because that is quite different than the gifts of the spirit.

The Fruit of the Spirit Differs from Spiritual Gifts

As we've been reading about the gifts of the spirit, do not confuse this with the fruit of the spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, and against such things, there is no law.

As Paul said there in Galatians chapter five, verses 22 and 23, when it comes to the gifts of the spirit, different people are going to have different giftings and the gift that the person next to you has may not necessarily be the gift that you have for service in helping to build up the body of Christ.

But when it comes to the fruit of the spirit, you don't get to pick and choose that one. That one, you have to do all, you have to do all of those. You can't be looking at the fruit of the spirit and go, well, you know, I, I like love.

I mean, we all have to have love. I think I'm pretty good at kindness, gentleness. I'll just focus on those. Now, you actually have to do all of those. May it be said that it could be exhibited in your life that this person does demonstrate the nine fruit that are mentioned there, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

That tends to be the most neglected of the fruit of the spirit, doesn't it? We all must have self-control as well as love and all the rest that are mentioned there. There are certainly things within the fruit of the spirit that can be done in service to each other.

There are certainly things in the fruit of the spirit that can benefit a person in their teaching. But regardless of whatever your spiritual gift may be, you still must exhibit all of the fruit of the spirit of God that is in your life.

So even as we read about these gifts and we think about in what way can I serve in the body of Christ, use those moments in your service to even be growing and maturing in the fruit, which we all must exhibit in the spirit of God, in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Spiritual Gift Categories in Romans 12

Last week, as we were looking at these gifts of the spirit, I mentioned to you that where Paul goes after prophecy is into two categories. And those two categories were service and teaching. It may be written a different way depending on your translation, but those are basically the two categories that are laid out in verse 7.

If service in your serving, the one who teaches in his teaching. What we have remaining in verse 8, we've got four more spiritual gifts that are mentioned in verse 8, but these likewise are categories and even these are subcategories of the category of teaching and service.

So as we look at these two gifts this morning, focusing mainly on exhortation and contribution, exhortation would fall under the category of teaching, whereas contribution would fall under the category of service.

Now there may be those who are teachers who are also gifted in service, and there could be servants who are gifted in teaching. But as we see these particular spiritual gifts, we're kind of branching out in our categories beneath teaching and service into now specifically exhortation and contribution, which would also be generosity or charity, another form of service.

And in what ways might you be gifted in these two? Exhortation and contribution, we'll consider that rather as we continue in this study. So we're splitting this into two, considering first of all the one who exhorts, what does exhortation mean?

What would it mean to have the gift of exhortation therefore? And then secondly, the gift of contributing, the one who contributes in generosity, we'll look at that category next. And then also consider how Christ demonstrated to us both exhortation and contribution.

Exhortation as Applying God's Word

So let's come back to the first part of verse eight, the one who exhorts in his exhortation. Literally, if you were to read this according to the Greek, it would be one who exhorting in the exhortation.

So exhorting as a verb and exhortation as a noun, I suppose, in the exhortation. How is it that a person exhorts? What does this mean? In the Greek, it's parakaleo, and it means to urge, to comfort, to implore, to encourage, to entreat, or to beseech, or draw near.

That's a lot of synonyms. It's a lot of different things that exhortation could meet. But if I could summarize it down to one very specific definition, to exhort is very simply to command. It's to take what we learn in God's word and apply it now.

So I could stand up in front of you and I could read to you God's word and I could tell you what this means, but if I don't then give an exhortation to it, you could be left going, what am I supposed to do with this?

That was wonderful. That was a good informational sermon as to what the Greek means and how we parse verbs and all this other kind of thing. What Paul was saying in this context, what the Romans heard, all of that could be great information, but how does the spirit now speak to us 2 ,000 years later and apply these things to our lives in a way that we may live them?

That's where exhortation is helpful. How do we instruct? How do we command? And that instruction, by the way, can also, along with these synonyms that we read, can also comfort and encourage. Helps word study says about this particular word exhortation.

To exhort refers to believers offering up evidence that stands up in God's court. The parallel word paracletos is the word from which we get the word paraclete, which means advocate and paraclete is the word that Jesus uses for the Holy Spirit in John chapters 13 through 17.

When he says to his disciples, I will send you a helper, the paraclete, the Holy Spirit to come to you. And it's from that same word that we get this Greek word that means to exhort, to command, to encourage, to urge.

In the King James version, if you're reading this verse, verse eight, you read he that exhorteth in exhortation in the NIV and many other translations from there. I think the Christian standard Bible, also the NLT.

It says if it is to encourage, so it doesn't use the word exhort there. It says if it is to encourage, then give encouragement, but that's synonymous with exhortation. Now given that exhort can also mean to comfort.

I wondered if there were any translations of the Bible that translated comforter. So translated it as a comforter rather than a person who exhorts. So I went through like 22 different translations. I didn't find anybody that had translated it comforter.

And I was like, okay, so nobody rendered that translation of the word exhort. But then I found one and it was actually in a commentary. I've never read the Syriac translation, but in one of my commentaries, it mentioned that in the Syriac, it says another who is a comforter in his consolation.

So there was somebody at some point in history and translating these manuscripts who understood that instruction to exhort as also someone who comforts. And when we think about the word of God, commanding us, directing us, telling us what to do.

Do you think of that as being comforting? Do you think of that as being encouraging? Now you may, but I will tell you that growing up, that was not my feeling about when dad told me to do something because the Bible tells me to.

I didn't find that very comforting. Oftentimes as a kid, I felt like sometimes in the cold setting that church could be for me sometimes, it felt like God was just out to keep me from having any fun. And he stood up there in heaven and he spoke in King James language because those were the churches that I attended when I was a kid, independent, fundamentalist, Baptist churches, anybody?

Yes. The King James Bible. And God stood up there and preached in King James English and looked upon me and said, behold, Gabriel is useth, haseth, funneth. And then squashed me right there on the spot, made sure I did not have any fun.

That was the way that I felt about God's commands growing up. I remember there came a point when I was in college and I'm out from under my parents' roof and I'm out on my own and I'm making stupid decisions.

But if you've heard my testimony and I've shared this with you before, then you will know that God never let me get too far in those stupid decisions. God's commands actually became a comfort to me in those moments of stupidity.

Because though I would chase after the passions of my flesh, I would never go too far and always would find myself wondering, why don't I want to go farther than this? Why do I know it's wrong even to be where I'm at, let alone going farther than where I'm at?

And I remembered the word of the Lord as spoken in Psalm 119, though I take my own life in my hands, I will not forget your law. And the commands that my parents taught me, which felt so oppressive to me when I was a kid, came back to my mind when it came to desiring to live in such a way that was pleasing to the Lord.

And God and His commandments never let me get too far. And His commands, His instructions, those things that I thought were oppressive at one point actually became very comforting to me. And when I'm out on my own and I'm wondering about what I'm supposed to be doing in life and this, that, or the other, God's word was guiding me.

It was directing me. And it gave me a direction to go. You know, the psalmist even writes about how comforting God's commands can be. Our Psalm of the month has come from Psalm 23. And it's in verse 4 where we read, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me.

Your rod and your staff, they do what? They comfort me. The rod and the staff were guiding instruments of the shepherd, right? And to call it a rod and a staff means there's a twofold purpose to this instrument.

It guides and it also, what do you think the other purpose is? Strikes, rod, it's punishment. Sometimes you got to strike those sheep to get them to go the right way. The Bible calls us sheep. Do you know why?

Because sheep are dumb and we don't know where to go without the guidance of our shepherd. And God uses his rod sometimes to correct, sometimes to punish if need be. And he uses his staff more to encourage, more to direct, more to point the way.

As a child, I also hated being punished when I was being punished. But man, I look back on those moments now and am I thankful for them. That my father did not let me rebel, but punished me to show me the right way to go.

And I hope that in passing that on to my children, though they may not like being punished now, I hope it will be the same for them. A day will come when they are on their own, when they are thankful that they were guided by the teachings of their parents, which came from the word of God.

We were guided by God's word. We guided our children in God's word. And may God continue to guide them in their lives. I hope my kids won't have to make some of the dumb decisions I made before they learn the right way to go.

But the Lord is good to us even when he punishes us. And Hebrews 12 tells us all about that. If we were not punished, if we were not disciplined by God, then we would be illegitimate children and we would not be the sons and daughters of God.

But God's instructions are a comfort to us. His exhortation is good. The psalmist speaks of this also in Psalm 119 verses 51 and 52. The insolent utterly deride me, but I do not turn away from your law.

When I think of your rules from of old, I take comfort, O Lord. When I think of your rules, they comfort me. You know, I love that too. When the insolent utterly deride me, I do not turn away from your law.

I had friends in college that would make fun of me because of my principles, because of my ethics, because I believed that God had said, this is good and this is bad. And I would not go in the direction of those things that I knew were evil in the sight of God.

And I would get made fun of for that. And there was, there was a point where I would see friends of mine who would wrestle with this for the first time in, in, you know, late teens, young twenties, they grew up in Christian homes too, but now they get to college.

Now they're getting made fun of for that. And they decide, you know what? Maybe this wasn't all that much fun after all. So they would give up what, what they were raised in, the biblical principles they were raised in.

And they would go after liberalism. And I saw many friends of mine fall away from the faith in those particular years, from about 18 to 22, probably the time in my life where I saw the most number of friends fall away from the Lord.

And when I was kind of wrestling with the same things, I kind of felt like this, this just strikes me as Stockholm syndrome. Like you're going to let yourself be captive to the world and then fall in love with them.

The people who are making fun of you, that's who you want to go try and please. And then I was preaching as much to myself as to anybody. But instead of being guided by those who would make fun of us and deride us because of Christ whom we worship, again, we read, I do not turn away from your law.

And when I think of your rules, they comfort me. Can you think of somebody in your life who had a gift of exhortation? Like they just seem to have that way where if they corrected you, if they guided you, if they advised you, it didn't matter whether it had to be a rebuke.

A lot of times we think of correction, it's like, you know, somebody is pulling you aside and they're just ripping you one, something like that. But it wasn't necessarily that. It could just be a grandfatherly conversation or they take you out to lunch.

They ask you how you're doing. They give you some goals, some guidance, some things for you to do. Can you think of somebody in your life that when they would speak to you in that way, you would listen?

And not only would you listen, you would want to do what they tell you to do. You would know that is sound and good counsel. And I want to do what this person is instructing me in. And maybe you respected that person so much, you even wanted to please them in the instruction that they gave you.

And for me, that was my father, most definitely. I wanted to please my dad. I wanted him to be proud of me. And he often was proud of me and would tell me that. There were also good men in my life, good pastors a little bit later on in life who I believe had that gift of exhortation.

Exhortation Through Pastoral Correction

And when they spoke to me, I listened to them. This is embarrassing to have to admit, but I used to be a false teacher. And I used to listen to Rob Bell. For those of you who know who Rob Bell is, later wrote a book in which he basically espoused universalism and everybody goes to heaven and nobody goes to hell.

That's kind of in a nutshell who Rob Bell came to be. Thankfully, I was kind of rescued out of his teaching before all of that came out. And he was exposed in that way. But I used to be just utterly captivated with the way that he taught.

Man, he's teaching things about the Bible I've never heard before, right? Because they weren't in the Bible. And I just was thrilled with watching his NUMA videos. And it was a friend of mine that had introduced him to me.

That friend of mine, by the way, to this day is also an elder in a church. And he's also repented of his Rob Bell ways. So we were both kind of caught up in this at the same time. And I told a friend of mine, Pastor Ken, I said, hey, Buzz and I, two friends, we were kind of helping lead a youth group together.

And I said, we're going to show these teens these Rob Bell videos. Have you ever heard of Rob Bell before? He's like, no, that's not a teacher I'm familiar with. I said, well, come to youth group on Wednesday night.

I think you'll just be totally captivated by this guy. I played one video. It was only like eight minutes long, if anybody remembers the Rob Bell NUMA phase. It was only like an eight minute video. We played it for the kids.

Then my friend Buzz, he got up and did like a devotional lesson with the students. And afterward, I went up to Ken right after. And I said, so what'd you think of that, Ken? He said five words to me. He said, it's garbage, throw it away.

And that was it. He left. But that was enough. Like I trusted Ken that much that he told me that. And I was like, you know what? I better do some investigating in this. If that's Ken's opinion of this, I respected it well enough to know, okay, I'm missing something here.

So what do I need to learn? I actually didn't go to Ken and ask him, hey, walk me through this a little bit. I think he trusted me well enough to know, Gabe, you should know better. That was kind of like the impression he gave me in saying, it's garbage, throw it away.

You should know better than this. Fine. So I'm going back and doing my research. And I'm listening to what Rob says. And I'm cross-referencing it with scripture. And I'm looking at it. I'm going, you know what?

These aren't lining up. And I find other teachers that are exposing, hey, I know Rob Bell's famous right now. It's really, really popular in youth groups. But you got to be careful by what he's saying.

And then they would go through some of his teaching, some of the exact videos that I would watch, and they would expose how these things don't line up with what Jesus said in scripture. So Ken was somebody that I thought I've had that gift of exhortation, didn't even have to say much.

And immediately, I'm convicted by just a simple instruction that he gave to me. It's garbage, throw it away. That was enough that I needed to hear. But praise God for the Spirit's anointing on that man with exhortation, that he would say something so simple, and it would be so guiding in my life.

And can you think of someone like that in your life, who when giving you instruction, you will listen? And it seems like through their words, the Spirit just penetrates and sends us in the right direction that we should go, pleasing to our Lord and not to our flesh.

Pastoral and Evangelistic Roles of Exhortation

The Apostle Paul gives all kinds of exhortation, and we've been reading about it here in the book of Romans. When it comes to giving direction, John Gill points out that the direction that we see of the spiritual gifts as they're laid out here in chapter 12 go from prophet to teacher to exhorter.

And so one of the things that he points out is that all pastors must be exhorters. They must exhort. That must be a pattern of all pastors' teaching. But there may be others as well. So in what ways, or let me give you three examples rather, what are three roles that a person might have in which you would find or see the gift of exhortation?

The first one I've already given you is pastor, but I believe in the same category, you would also have an evangelist, a missionary, or a counselor. So somebody would serve in this capacity. Like even an evangelist, when you think about what an evangelist does, an evangelist doesn't just stand up and tell people the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There also must be a challenge to repent and believe. That's exactly the way that Jesus began his ministry, repent and believe the gospel. John the Baptist before him started the same way, repent and believe.

And so that is an exhortation that's given even with the gospel. The gospel is not just merely information that is shared with you. Otherwise, a person could be left believing, oh, well, Jesus has come and died on the cross and risen from the dead.

I guess we're all saved. Now, there must be exhortation there. There must be. Only those who believe in him will have eternal life. So turn to the Lord Jesus Christ, believe in him. Turn from your sin to him.

He will forgive you, and you will have everlasting life with God. There's an aspect of exhortation that must also come in with the presentation of the evangelist. And the evangelist will likely have that gift of exhortation that it challenges people who hears to turn from their sin to the Lord Christ.

To the missionary, the same. To the counselor, a counselor may know you specifically. There may be a lot more direct application in the way that a counselor speaks to you because you've shared with the counselor the specific things in your life that you are having trouble with.

I can speak very generically up here with regards to exhortation, but a counselor will know those specific things in your life and, therefore, share with you, here's what you should do in light of this.

And that's exhortation. We heard this morning in our congregational reading, 2 Timothy 4 .2, preach the word, be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, and exhort with complete patience and teaching.

That's exhortation. A pastor, an evangelist, a missionary must preach the word, but that's a command for the whole church as well. There is a sharing of the word that I believe that we will all do with those whom we love and desire to have them come to the faith.

Titus 2 .5, the Apostle Paul said, Declare these things, exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. He says this to Titus as he says to Crete to preach. Acts 2 .40 says,. With many other words, he bore witness and continued to exhort them.

This is the Apostle Peter saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation. There's exhortation in evangelism. Not just saying Jesus is the one that the scriptures told us about, who came and who died and rose again.

And by faith in him, those who believe will be saved. But he even adds on to that with many other words. He continued to bear witness and he exhorted them, the passage says, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation.

You've probably heard me say the same. I take my cue from the Apostle Peter. My friends, don't be taken in with the culture. Save yourselves from this crooked generation. In Acts 11 .23, Barnabas came to Antioch because he had heard that the gospel had gotten there to Antioch and many Gentiles were believing.

And when Barnabas came and saw the grace of God, he was glad. And Acts 11 .23 says, He exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose. So even when a person comes to faith, there must be continued exhortation.

Remain faithful to the Lord. Continue to walk in his ways. Exhortation is desperately needed in the sermons that are being preached in churches all across America today. But very sadly, there's very little exhortation to be found in them.

A lot of times, you just hear a lot of ear tickling. You don't hear a lot of instruction as to what you should do in light of the salvation that we've received in Christ. And the lack of exhortation makes for a lot of dead preaching.

Leonard Ravenhill said, 40 years ago, the tragedy of this late hour is that we have too many dead men in the pulpits giving out too many dead sermons to too many dead people. And it is the spirit that brings alive and sets on course the person who will walk in the ways of Christ.

And we need exhortation. We need that rod and staff. We need direction to know the way that we should go that is pleasing to the Lord. Jesus said to his disciples in John 14 .15, you will show me that you love me when you obey my commandments.

We listen to God's exhortation. So that's the first gift that we have here in verse 8. For the one who exhorts, let him continue in this exhortation. The second one that we have is the one who contributes in generosity.

Contribution as Generous Service

And like I said, this one falls under the category, again, of service. One who is serving is serving in such a way so as to give. Now, I want to be very specific with this gift. When it comes to the one who contributes in generosity, we are talking mainly about money here.

We are talking about helping to meet a particular material need. And maybe not money in the sense that you're just giving finances to somebody, maybe making a meal for someone, maybe providing clothes for somebody, or something to that effect.

But we're talking about meeting material needs. And meeting a person's material needs sometimes does take a certain expense. So with the one who contributes, this is literally one who is giving in generosity.

That's how the Greek would translate it. The Greek word for one who gives is metadidami, which means to impart or to share. Now, here's the good news about this word. It's a lot less complicated than and has a lot fewer synonyms than exhortation.

It's just very simply to impart or share. That's pretty straightforward. Thayer's Greek lexicon says, it is to share a thing with anyone. There's a very simple definition right there. Jesus gave exhortation to share quite often.

And you're surely familiar with this verse, Luke 3, 11. Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none. And whoever has food is to do likewise. To share is the same word that we have here in Romans 12, 8, where Jesus says to share with one another.

It's the same word that Paul uses when he says to the one who contributes to do so in generosity. And Paul has used this word before here in Romans. It was in chapter 1, verse 11 that he says, for I long to see you that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you.

And that word that's translated impart is the same word for contribute. I want to contribute to you a spiritual gift to strengthen you. So Paul, using his gifts that the Spirit of God has given to him, that he may impart something upon these Christians in Rome that it will strengthen them in the Spirit of God, that they will be matured and grown in their understanding of Christ.

Biblical Examples of Giving to Those in Need

We see other places in Scripture that encourage us toward this generosity. Ephesians 4, 28, let the thief no longer steal but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

And sharing is the same Greek word right there. Now, as we read this in other translations, I believe it's the King James that says, he that giveth, let him do so with simplicity. You may have a translation that says, to he who contributes, doing so in simplicity rather than saying generosity, simplicity.

How are those two words alike? How are those synonyms? Matthew Poole says the following, with simplicity is also rendered singleness of heart, meaning to do it faithfully and impartially and without favor or affection, meaning that you're not showing favor to people.

Like, I'll help this person. I don't really want to help them so much. I don't like the way they talk to me, so I'm going to help this person over here. Well, if that's your attitude, you may not have this gift of contribution and generosity.

But rather, you were willing to help anybody and not even requiring or expecting anything in return. I go back to my college years with you again, when in my fifth semester of college, I'll kind of spare you the story of how I ended up there again in the same place where I was before.

But in my fifth semester, I had no money. Actually, the strange thing about that was I did have money, but I had no way to acquire it. My last paycheck from my job had come in, and I had it in a paper form of a check, but I had no way of cashing it because a bank required you to be able to provide two forms of identification to own or to open a bank account.

I had one. I had my driver's license. It's all I had. I couldn't even open a bank account to cash my check. Now, there were those check cash places, you know, you can go and get your check cash there, right, for like a fee of 10 to 20%.

And this was a check for $1 ,000. I'm like, I don't want to give them $150 just to cash my check. So I was in my pride. I'm like, I'm not even going to do this at one of those check cash places. I'll find a way to get this money.

When I ended back up in my college town, I had nowhere to go, no money that I could actually use, so I slept in my car. I know what that experience is like. And I have nowhere to go and no money to spend, and so you end up sleeping in your car.

I went to the advisor that I had at my school, and he was a Christian man. The advisor at my school, and he's asking me, you know, how are you getting everything together? You got your books, you're ready to go with the semester?

And I said, no, man, I'm really quite messed up. I slept in my car last night. I've got no way to cash this check. And he said, well, what's the check for? How much is it for? I said, it's $1 ,000. But I need to be able to open a bank account.

I can't open a bank account. I'm waiting for my other form of ID to come in so that I can open an account. I can deposit this money. He said, $1 ,000, eh? And I said, yes. He opens up his wallet. He counts out three hundreds.
