Welcome to 5 -Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today's June the 1st and we'll be looking at 2
Chronicles 1 and Psalm 72. Now today we officially enter the height of Solomon's kingdom and the beginning of Israel's wisdom era in full bloom.
2 Chronicles 1 records Solomon's worshiping God and receiving wisdom from the Lord and experiencing extraordinary blessings and prosperity.
Psalm 72 then expands the vision outward into a breathtaking portrait of a righteous kingship with peace and justice and abundance and worldwide dominion.
Together these passages present a kingdom that is flourishing beneath divine wisdom and they point us still forward to a greater king that is to come.
And in that way in 2 Chronicles 1, Solomon firmly establishes his reign and gathers
Israel together for worship at Gibeon where the tabernacle and bronze altar remain.
And there Solomon offers sacrifices before the Lord and God appears to him during the night inviting him to ask for whatever he desires.
And just like we saw in 1 Kings, rather than seeking military dominance, wealth, or long life,
Solomon asks God for wisdom and knowledge to govern God's people faithfully. And God is pleased with this request and grants
Solomon extraordinary wisdom along with riches and honor and influence beyond any king before him and after.
The kingdom begins entering into a season of immense prosperity, stability, and international significance.
And then Psalm 72 portrays the ideal reign of the king. Justice flourishes, the poor are defended, peace spreads throughout the land, the righteous prosper, kings from distant land bring their tribute, the dominion of the king extends from sea to sea, and all the nations are blessed through him.
The world itself begins looking increasingly ordered, fruitful, and at peace, which are all
Edenic themes from the Garden of Eden, beneath the reign of this righteous king. So as you read today,
I want you to ask the following question. What kind of kingdom emerges when wisdom governs beneath the blessing of God?
These passages show that righteous wisdom produces justice, peace, flourishing, and blessing that extends outward beyond national borders.
The central pattern then in these passages is the relationship between wisdom and flourishing.
Solomon doesn't begin by grasping for visible power or military supremacy. He recognizes the need for wisdom because governing
God's people requires moral and spiritual discernment beneath the fear of the
Lord. So as wisdom takes root, the kingdom begins flourishing externally. Order increases, peace expands, prosperity grows, international influence spreads, and stability settles upon the nation.
This is profoundly important because Scripture consistently presents wisdom not merely as intellectual brilliance, but as covenantal skill for living rightly under the rule of God.
When wisdom governs us beneath the authority of God, life itself begins moving back towards proper creation order.
Psalm 72 expands this vision beyond Solomon himself. The psalm describes a reign so righteous, so peaceful, so fruitful, and universal that it begins exceeding the boundaries of any human empire.
The poor are perfectly defended. Peace becomes abundant. The nations stream towards this king.
Blessings reaches the ends of the earth. And the kingdom begins resembling the restoration of the
Garden of Eden itself, which according to Psalm 72 is spreading outward into the world.
And this presses into our life with tremendous clarity because human societies often pursue flourishing through the wrong ends.
They pursue it through power and wealth and technology or political force while neglecting wisdom and righteousness.
But Scripture insists that lasting peace and justice can only grow where life is ordered beneath the wisdom and the authority of God.
And in that way, these passages powerfully point to Jesus, who is the greater Solomon, whose kingdom fulfills everything that Psalm 72 anticipates.
Solomon receives wisdom from God, but Christ is the wisdom of God incarnate.
Solomon's reign brings temporary peace and prosperity, but Christ establishes everlasting righteousness and unending peace.
Psalm 72 especially stretches beyond Solomon's reach to the Messiah because Solomon's kingdom never truly reached all the nations, nor did it establish perfect justice forever.
But Christ's kingdom does, and it will, and his dominion will extend to the ends of the earth.
And through him, all of the nations will be and are being gathered into his covenant blessings even now that has been happening for the past 2 ,000 years.
In another sense, the repeated concern for the poor, the needy and the oppressed and the vulnerable in Psalm 72 will also find its realization in Christ, who is the righteous
King who defends the helpless and judges with perfect justice. And where Solomon's wisdom eventually becomes corrupted through compromise,
Christ remains perfectly faithful and true forever. His kingdom will never decay into idolatry, pride, or oppression.
Through his reign, the earth itself steadily moves towards the peace, abundance, justice, and flourishing that these passages are celebrating.
So as you read 2 Chronicles 1 and Psalm 72 today, notice how wisdom begins transforming the kingdom into a place of peace and justice and beauty and blessing, just like we learn in verse
Kings. And tomorrow, we will enter into the Song of Solomon and see how covenant love itself becomes a picture of flourishing beneath God's holy and wise design.
And with that, read your Bible carefully, devotionally, and joyfully, and may the Lord use his word to sanctify you completely, and we will continue our journey tomorrow.
