DAY 198: Isaiah 18–22

DAY 198: Isaiah 18–22

Isaiah continues exposing every false refuge Judah might trust during the Assyrian crisis. Cush appears powerful, Egypt ancient and impressive, Babylon proud, and Jerusalem well fortified, but none can stand independently of the Lord. Egypt will be shaken, Cush humiliated, Babylon brought down, and the surrounding nations reduced to fear. Yet Isaiah also looks beyond judgment to a day when Egypt and Assyria will worship alongside Israel, showing that God intends not only to humble the nations but to redeem people from among them. The sharpest warning, however, falls on Jerusalem. Faced with danger, the city inspects weapons, repairs walls, and secures water, but refuses to look to the One who made it. Their activity becomes a substitute for repentance. Shebna likewise uses authority for self-exaltation and is removed, while Eliakim receives the key of David’s house. Ultimately, these chapters point to Jesus Christ, the true holder of David’s key, who opens and no one shuts. Earthly alliances fail, fortifications crumble, and human offices pass away, but Christ remains the unshakable refuge. He gathers former enemies into one kingdom, entrusts Himself perfectly to the Father, and shelters every sinner who looks to Him.
