Now, let's look at Romans 8 .3 .4 for a minute, because this is really important. For what the law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh,
God did. We couldn't do it because in our flesh we can't keep the law, but God can. He sent
His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh.
Because He lived the law perfectly, He was able to condemn sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the
Spirit. This is why it says in Philippians 3 .9 that we have a righteousness that is not our own.
We have the righteousness of Christ, who lived the law perfectly, who satisfied the law perfectly.
Therefore, salvation is by grace through faith. Grace is the unmerited favor of God, and it is by faith, even the faith that He grants to us.
He grants what we believe, Philippians 1 .29. His grace, through the faith that we have, is what saves us.
Why? Because it is not by our keeping the law, but by the law -keeper Jesus, by what
He did, God in flesh, who kept the law perfectly and died in our place.
Ephesians 2 .8 .9 says this, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves.
It is the gift of God, not as a result of works, that no one should boast.
And again, in Galatians 3 .13, it says this, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us.
For it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. Ephesians 5 .2 says,
And walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God the
Father, as a fragrant aroma. Let me summarize. God is perfect and holy, but we are not.
He requires perfection and holiness, but we cannot be perfect and holy. God cannot sin, but we have all sinned.
Since we cannot keep the law perfectly and please God, the only one left to keep the law is God Himself.
This is why Jesus, who was the second person of the Trinity, became flesh, fulfilled the law and died in our place.
The true gospel is that God became one of us, did what we could not do by living sinlessly.
He then died on the cross and rose from the dead. All we have to do is receive what
He did on the cross on our behalf, and we receive it by faith in Him.
That is why God had to be the one who died for us. We can't save ourselves, it has to be
