(Revelation) the New Jerusalem Our Eternal Home — Willie Mullan

Nine, six, seven, please. Nine, six, seven. When my life work is ended, and I cross the swelling tide, when the bright and glorious morning I shall see, I shall know my Redeemer when I reach the other side, and His smile will be the first to welcome me.

Revelation 21 and the New Jerusalem

Nine, six, seven, please. Twenty-first chapter, Revelation 21. And last Tuesday evening we looked very carefully at the first four verses, and we found that we were looking at the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, and we thought coming down from God out of heaven.

We were looking at this new planet, because this is to be a complete new planet. It's the place that the Lord has gone to prepare for His own. And when God upsets this present solar system of ours, then this new planet will come down from God out of heaven.

It's to be our eternal home. One of the old Puritans said this, it is something completely out of this world. And he was dead right. Something completely out of this world. And it's this new, eternal home of ours that we're looking at this evening.

The Consolations of the Eternal Home

We looked last evening before we left, we looked at the constellations of our home. Let me read them to you again. Verse four, that's where we stopped last week. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and I said there will be no disappointment in heaven.

You never have to sit down and cry because of something like that. And it also said, and there shall be no more death, for if there is no disappointment in that home, there will be no judgment in that home.

No more death. And then it goes on further and says, neither sorrow nor crying. There will be no disappointment, no judgment and no lament. No lamentation will ever be heard in this life. And it goes further and it says, neither shall there be any more pain nor torment.

These are the constellations of our home. We're going to a home that Jesus hath prepared. And I can tell you there'll be no disappointment there. There'll be no hospitals, no graves on the hillside of glory.

For there they shall never more die. It's the land that is fairer than day. And as we're going to look up this evening, we're going to take the whole evening in looking at every conceivable part of our eternal home.

I want you to notice this in the chapter this evening. That from verse 5 to the end of verse 8, it's the parenthetical portion. And I'm leaving the parenthetical portion out for next week. It's a very special bit because it says,.

And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold I make all things new. Verse 6 it says,. And he said unto me, the one that's on the throne, He said, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega. You know who used the title before, do you?

Christ as the Alpha and Omega

Because as you go through the beginning of the book, let's go through the beginning. We'll do it properly next week. But just to get your attention fixed on it, verse 9 of chapter 1, Revelation 1, verse 9, John says, I, John, who also am your brother and companion in tribulation.

Verse 10 he says, I, John, was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice as of a trumpet saying, I am Alpha and Omega. Is that the same saying? And it says, verse 12,. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me, and being turned I saw seven golden candlesticks, and in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of Man.

Is he the Alpha and Omega? Oh yes, this is one of the double titles of Christ. Of course you believers know that he's the Alpha and Omega of everything that concerns you for your eternal good. He's the beginning and the ending of.

It's very interesting when you come to Revelation 21, go back there again, verse 16, He said unto me, it is done, I am Alpha and Omega. I will give unto him that is the first of the function of the water of life freely, he that overcometh shall inherit all things, and I will be his God.

He said, underline it for the Russellites, because they can't read. How many parts of this book could you go through to prove that he's God? I did it the other week, the child of God. Unto us a child is born.

His name shall be called wonderful contra, almighty God. And then we went right through the book after that. But we'll do it properly next Tuesday in the class, because there's more things attached to Alpha and Omega than you might think just now.

But we're leaving out the parenthetical portion this evening, because we want to go on with our eternal home. And we have looked up this planet coming down from God out of heaven, and we have seen the constellations of our home.

This is the home for the bride of Christ, you know, and if you're a believer tonight, you're in the body, and you belong to the part of the bride. Now, you know, he's gone to prepare this home for her, the church, the bride, and John had the great privilege of telling her all the things that was prepared.

And I have the great privilege of standing beside him this evening and sort of emphasising them for you. You know, when a man is getting married and he's got a home, and already, you know, he just loves to bring her in and let her see all the things that's prepared for her.

It's a very thrilling evening, you know. Now, that's what we're going to do this evening. And you know, when the woman goes into the new house, you can be very sure of this, if you want to know about the lights, what sort of lights we're going to have.

This is the thing with a woman, let me tell you. Now, let's start at verse 9 now. We're leaving off the plan and spectacle, and we're starting at verse 9. And there came unto me one of the seven angels, which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me.

The Bride, the Holy City, and Its Illumination

Well, because it said that the angel was one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, don't be trying to take this away back into the tribulation period. Because all that this is doing is letting you see that the angel that had the seven vials and the seven last plagues, well, he's eternal, he's on into the eternal day.

But John recognises him as one of the angels that had the seven plagues. But all that's over, as you'll see in a moment. There's something else in his hand now, and we'll get it in a moment. And the angel spoke to John and said, Come hither, I will surely be the bride, the lamb's wife.

Take no mistakes about it, that the mollied supper of the lamb is over. And the bride is the wife now. Some people say you can't describe the city like this. I will surely be the bride, the lamb's wife.

My dear friend, I can take you through the scriptures tonight and I can show you cities connected with people. Know about Saul of Tarsus. Little city, you know. Miserable little place. But the only historic note that I know about it is that Saul of Tarsus, that's where he came from.

Because I know that old Monty tonight, and he's a great old gentleman, we thank God for him. He loves to be called Montgomery of Aramain. And well might he do so. Because it was there he took the stand and directed affairs and changed Hitler's course.

Everybody knows about Wellington and Waterloo. And Nelson and Trafalgar. And if I would like to be connected with any town, I would like it to be Logan. Oh I know I was born in Utah, and I was born again there too.

But this is my home. This is where God blessed me for twenty years. And I'm known all over the world as Willie Mullen from Logan, and may it always be so. I have no trouble at all about connecting the bride with the city.

But you see just in a moment, verse ten,. And he, the angel, carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.

You wouldn't like to tell me that's where the bride came from, would you? No, that's where the bride went to. And then we start with the illuminations of our home. You know this city is illumined with the glory of God, having the glory of God.

And her light was like unto a throne most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. If you look away down your chapter, you see verse twenty-three. He's talking about the city now, all right.

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon. The whole solar system is upset, you know, to shine in it. For the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. You want to know about the lights in our new home?

The Lamb is all the glory of Emmanuel's Lamb. My, what light it will be. There'll be no nightmare the glory of God doesn't touch at all. Oh no, I think this is really thrilling, you know. I used to live in the den with a lot of boys with the played cards, and that was by candlelight.

And I know a trick or two about that. And then when I was being brought up in a big family of seventeen of us, it was lamplight. You know about it? I used to wash the globe with the lamp every day for my mother, and dry it properly and polish it with paper.

And on another occasion I had to boil the burner, she said, clean it out properly. And every day I trimmed the wick, and I know a thing or two about that, you know. And I know about candlelight, and I know about lamplight, and we thought we were millionaires when we got gaslight.

My, when we had the first mantel and put it on and the place was really lit up, we thought we were among the Joneses. And I know about candlelight and lamplight and gaslight and electric light, and I know a thing or two about moonlight, too.

Let me tell you something about that. Now don't stop me, now, don't stop me. Have a belation. You know the fellow who went to meet the girl and it was moonlight, don't you? You know what the moonlight does for you, don't you?

They don't laugh too loud because you get caught on here. And you know she was standing at the corner of the street, you see, and he was all moved by this moonlight. And here she was with her new red dress on and lovely red hat.

But she hadn't her teeth in. He says, I hardly knew you with your new red hat and your teeth out. And then after a moment he finally was talking to the post pillar box. That's what moonlight does for you.

You know Mr. Irvine was here this evening and he and I were in Greece together one time and we were out in the middle of the night. It was a lovely night and you could, the perfume was everywhere. It was really beautiful.

And you know we went away down into the park. I don't know what we were doing there at this time of the night, but we were walking along and two lovely Greek girls, you've never seen the like of this before, they came past us two and looked round and smiled.

He says to me in a very Roman fix, you've got it all mixed up but it doesn't matter. Well I can tell you that in this new home of ours we're not going to have candlelight or lamplight or gaslight or electric light or moonlight or sunlight.

All that's out is the glory of God. Oh what a home it will be. Lit up with the glory of the Lord. The land shall be the glory. And then you note there are great fortifications here because the wee woman needs to know that she's safe.

The Walls, Gates, and Israel's Eternal Association

And it says about the city, verse eleven, having the glory of God, and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a dust that was thrown clear of crystal, and had a wall great and high. Can you get the hold of that?

Because round about this city, make no mistakes about it, there's a wall great and high. But I want you to notice not only these fortifications of the city, and you'll find when you look at what they're made of that you're quite safe up there, you'll please take note just now that there are gates into the city.

Had a wall great and high and had twelve gates. And at the gates twelve angels. Angels at the gates. And at the gates twelve angels and names written thereon. Names not written on the angels, remember, on the gates.

Which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. Oh, that's really thrilling, you know, that when you look at this city and see its high walls, and its twelve gates, and we're going to find that there are three gates on every side, north, east, south and west of this city.

They're the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. You see, we're going to have associations with Israel for all eternity. That's most interesting, you know, when you think about that. Let's look away down the chapter again.

Do you see verse twenty-four? Verse twenty-three again. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon to shine in it. For the glory of God did lighten it, and the land is the light thereof.

And the nations, get the word nations properly now, of them which are saved, and make no mistake about that, shall walk in the light of it. And the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

That's very interesting. See verse twenty-six? And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. You see, this old earth of ours is going to go on for all eternity too. And God's going to have an earthly people, and God is going to have a heavenly people in the new planets.

Of it will be associations, you know. I think we're going to see that gravity is going to be done away with. You know, when we get into this eternal day, what changes are going to take place. There'll be a change in the solar system.

Well, if they take the sun away, they'll have to make a change, because it's holding everything together just now. And if they're going to drop the new planet down, God will have to be very careful about it.

And we were finding out last week that there has to be a change in our sexuatory system, because when we go to live in our eternal home, we'll be a body of flesh and bones, but no blood. The undermining force now is blood.

Shed my blood and I die. But when Christ rose from the dead, he had a body, he had flesh and bones. He said, handle me and see now, a spirit hath not flesh and bones. As you see me have, his blood was shed.

And the undermining force of that body, flesh and bones, was spirit. Could there be a change in the sexuatory system? Could there be a change in the digestive system? God's going to do away with meat.

He'll destroy both belly and meat, he says. All the changes are nearly too big for us, because we're looking at something that's completely out of this world. But I want you to get the hold of this, that we're going to have associations with the people on the earth, you know.

And I think the names and the twelve gates of the twelve tribes is just to let the normal welcome in there, because they're saved from the earth. Association. Now I want you to get the hold of this. We're back at Revelation 21, and we'll read it as we go, then we'll get it properly.

The Foundations and Apostolic Identity of the City

Verse 13. On the east, three gates. On the north, three gates. On the south, three gates. On the west, three gates. Remember these are gates within to the city. Now, we're coming from the illuminations of our home, and the fortifications, to the foundations.

And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. I hope you've got that quite clear in your mind too, because this city is on the foundations where the apostles' names are.

You see, that's why I'm sure that it's for the bride. You see, the church of Jesus Christ, the bride, she was built on the foundation of the apostles. Make no mistakes about that. I know that Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone.

I know all about it. But the scripture says that she was built upon the foundation of the apostles. That's why I know that the city belongs to the bride. This is her home. And I'm absolutely sure that she'll have associations with Israel, which makes a difference between the bride and Israel.

Yes, I'm very sure about that. I haven't any doubts at all in my mind. But I think we'll get it a little bit clearer as we get along. You see, we have looked at these constellations and then these illuminations and then these fortifications and now at the foundations.

Measuring the City's Cubic Dimensions

Now we come to the tight bit of this chapter and we're at verse 15. And he that walketh with me hath a golden reed to measure the city. Now that's not a vial full of flakes. That tells you now that although he was one of the angels that had the seven vials, it's all past.

He's got the golden reed in his hand. He's on another job now. Job keeps the angel. Measure the city. And the group thereof and the world thereof. And I want you to get the hold of that because we read far too quick at times.

He's measuring three things. He's measuring the city first of all. And then he's measuring the gates. And then he's measuring the wall. Because the city and the wall and the gates are all different. Now it says in verse 16 and the city lies full square.

Now that's only the city now. And the city is full square. And the length is as large as the breadth. And he measured the city with the reed 12 ,000 furlongs. Let's get this dimension in now. Because we're up in dimensions.

12 ,000 furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of its arito. I want you to get that into your mind, you know. A lot of mathematicians around me tonight have got to go very carefully. 12 ,000 furlongs.

Furlongs in the mind. And if you divide 12 ,000 by 8 8 goes into 12 once, 4 over. And into the 40 it goes 5 times. So that to bring it into a figure that we can see it is 1 ,500 miles full square. Now let's take that slowly.

Because remember this new city is not just 1 ,500 miles long. Nor is it 1 ,500 square miles. 1 ,500 miles square is different from square miles. It's all they tell me. So it's not 1 ,500 miles long now.

It's not that. And it's not 1 ,500 square miles. Neither is it 1 ,500 miles square. 1 ,500 miles cube. You didn't think I knew that, did you? There you are. I'm coming off. Let's get the hold of that now.

And to get the hold of that I've done something for you today. Say that's a cube. It's all the same. Someone said to me once, you're a square. I said, that's right. No matter what way you throw me I'll turn up on the right side.

So it's a cube. Now let's get this very careful because it's very important. It's 1 ,500 miles, 1 ,500 miles, 1 ,500 miles. We have got it in our own scripture. It says the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

Isn't that tremendous? Let's get it that it's 1 ,500 miles cube. Now I want you to get something more here that's very important. Very few things. And the building of the wall of it was of jasper. And the city was pure gold like onto clear glass.

That's why I think of this as sort of golden colour. I'm not sure that this is correct all together. Now this whole city, 1 ,500 miles, it's pure gold. But it's the kind of gold we've never seen before.

We've never seen gold as clear as glass. We're talking about something that's out of this world all together. Don't you make any mistakes about that. Several architects in the meeting tonight, and I think there's a man called Dubonnet who's one of the great architect writers.

He wrote a book on the shape of things to come. And although he's got a great mind and is a very important person in your world, he doesn't know the shape of things to come. We're not the shape of things to come now.

So we've got the cube. This is where we're going to live in this great planet that God's going to let down. And it's 1 ,600, 1 ,600, 1 ,500. And it's pure gold. A kind of gold we've never seen before, clear as crystal.

What a wonderful thing it's going to be, filled with the glory of God. But the subject gets deeper, you know. Let's have a look at this. Verse 21. And the twelve gates were twelve perils. Every separate gate was of one peril.

The Street, Materials, and Architecture of the New Jerusalem

We'll get this in a moment when we come to the decorations, but let's just keep that to the side. And the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. Now, sometimes we sing on the golden streets of heaven.

Well, that's just not correct, but I sing it never bothers me. There are no streets, there's just a street, a street in heaven. Now, that gives me quite a bit of bother, because this one street for all the saints, it's got to be a big street.

And I took this very cube here one day up to Mr. McCormick, who's in the meeting tonight, who owns a big business in this town and is recognized as one of the great architects in our land. Has many letters to his name.

I just put it on the desk and said, well, this is what I want you to do. I want you to find for me the acreage that we live on on earth. You know our planet, and we live on the outside of the planet, and two thirds of our planet is water, of course you know that.

One third is earth, you know. And when you take the acreage of earth, you get a certain figure, and it doesn't matter to us just now. Now, when you begin to think about this, we're not going to live on the outside of this.

It'll get in you. It's the difference between the planet we're on now and the one we're going to. It'll get into this. And the glory of God will right up inside. He'll go in there. And there's only one street.

Because we're beginning to learn about flyover bridges, aren't we? And if ever you go to California and see the great highway there, you know there's not only one over, but one over, and one over, and one over.

My, you would need to know where you're going. You get on the wrong highway, you might be a long way out of your way. And I believe, Mr. McCormick and I was working this out, supposing the street begins down here, under 1 ,500 miles, and suppose it comes back over, it turns over, even at a mile high, thus you have the street running over, and over, and over, and over for 1 ,500 miles.

But I would think a mile between the two bridges is a long way, isn't it? Supposing we halved it, supposing we even quartered it. He's better at figures than I am, and I've got to sit and wait, and he worked, and worked, and worked, and worked, and worked, and worked, and I thank him for it, and came to the conclusion that taking the inside of this, as we're looking at it now, this is 15 times bigger than our Earth.

So there'll be room for me, don't worry yourself, plenty of room. 15 times bigger. Yes, we're beginning to get the hold of it. Now, let's get the hold of this also. We're back at verse 16. And the city lies foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth, and he measured the city with the reed 12 ,000 furlongs, the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal, and he measured the wall thereof.

Hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. He's talking about the angel that was measuring, and the building of the wall as it was of Jasper. You see, we'll only look at not the city when we look at the cubits, but you know there's a wall all round the city.

It's Jasper. And I have a feeling, you see, that it was something like this. And when it was right round, it makes the city into a door. But this is just the fortification. Now, it's Jasper. It's like crystal.

Now, if you can imagine for a moment this crystal Jasper out covering the wall, the fortification, if you can imagine what this transparent gold is like, if you can imagine the glory of God in the inside, you're beginning to get a bit of an idea about the hell you're going to.

It's somehow built by our Lord. I go to prepare a place for you. That's where we're going to. Now, let's get this bit in carefully. See verse 18, that's where we are now, isn't it? And the building of the wall as it was of Jasper, and the city was pure gold like onto clear glass, and the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones.

The first foundation was Jasper, the second Sapphire, and it goes on right down here, and look at these precious stones. And then goes on to 21. The twelve gates were twelve perils, and every federal gate was of one peril.

If we could see these three gates on either side, these perma-gates, as we talk about, and then see this Jasper fortification, and then all the other precious stones put in, and then this pure gold clear as crystal, and then the whole thing lighted up with the glory of God.

Now, this is a job for some of you architects. I'm only fiddling around with the hem of the garment of the thing, or a home it is. I've got that out of it. This is my home. I'm going home to a place prepared.

The Lamb's Book of Life and Entrance Into the City

That's why I left the wee bit out, because there's a lot of folks that's not going there, the fearful and the unbelievers, and the home-monger, and the torturer, and all the hells, are going to the lake of fire.

You must be nearer heaven and home in this lake than you ever were before, or you must be nearer hell. Take your time. Here's this God's book. There's nobody could put these things together, only God.

He wouldn't like to try to start to write out something like this. He'd make a mess of it. Friend, I'm sure when I say these things, this is God's Word. You can only go to heaven through Christ, you know.

We'll learn that in a moment. But we've looked at the consolations of our home. No death, no sickness, no crying there. And the illuminations, the glory of God, and the glory of the land. And the fortifications, these high walls made of just stone.

And the foundations with the names of the twelve apostles. And the dimensions of the home and its golden streets. Now the attraction of this home. You know, it's this twenty-third verse,. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God did lighten it, and the land is the light thereof.

You know, friends, old Sir Robert Anderson was right. Sir Robert Anderson was the man who founded Scotland Yard for Britain. So he was no mean janitor. He could speak ten different languages absolutely distinct and clear at a moment's notice.

And Sir Robert Anderson had a little track on this home, and went into it. But he rightly placed the Lamb in the centre of the great attraction. And he could see the Lamb of the Crucified One. He could see the cross when he looked at the Lamb.

And he said this, He said, if I go away back out of time before the hills the Lord has stood, or e 'er proceeded from, if I go into eternity before the world began, Eternity there knew no other past, no other future.

Eternity there knew no other future than Calvary. And he said, if I go on this way and go out of time and go to the New Jerusalem, Eternity there will know no other past. Eternity there will know no other future than the cross.

Eternity there will know no other past. The cross and the cross and the Lamb will be the counsel of this for all eternity. And we ought to learn now to make Him the centre of everything we do. And if we keep Him in the centre, we'll have the blessing of God.

Nations, Prophecy, and the Final Call to Faith

If we're getting through this, you can see the consolations, and the illuminations and the fortifications and the foundations and the dimensions and the decorations and the affection. And we have already hinted at the association, verse 24,.

And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it. You know, it's going to throw a light onto this very planet of ours. And there's going to be nations down here. And I can assure the Egyptians tonight that Israel will be here.

I assure them. And if they think for one moment that they are going to annihilate Israel at this time, they'll have to, because it will not happen, you know. And although the President of Egypt threatens tonight to throw things into the hands of Israel, he'd better be careful because they might throw something back.

And I believe he'd be quite capable of doing that. I don't think the war will ever get to that end. There's just one danger in this war at this moment. And the danger is not Israel being annihilated or the Egyptians either.

The danger is that Russia might go to see America one of these nights. I'm sure from studying this book that the American continent, from north to south and east to west, will be born this time. And if you follow the TV sometimes, I sat and watched this horrible thing the other night because I've got to learn.

And if they're practicing young sorts of things in America and ten thousand things more that you don't know, it's going to be born before long. That's the danger. There is nowhere in Scripture, nowhere, anywhere, nowhere in prophecy, that America will be in at the end.

No, sir. The United States of Europe will be the boss at the end. And if the Russians went in the middle of this night and burned America from end to end, remember the Americans will see them coming. And Americans have a system whereby they have three minutes warning.

And in the three minutes they'll do enough damage to Russia to knock her out for a day or two. Take America out, take Russia out, and he's on a winner. Because the common master will have the world at his feet.

It'll have to get everything from there. And the common market will have hundreds of millionaires in no time. One thing is sure, that when the day dawns and the shadows flee away, there'll be nations on this planet saved by the grace of God, and one of them will be Israel.

In fact, she'll be the head of the nations and not the tail. If you can see this, it says, verse 25,. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day, for there shall be no night there. You know, when our boys were just boys, oh, eight, nine, ten,.

And Mr. Ervin's boy was just a boy, maybe eight, nine, ten, somewhere there. We've been friends all our lives, and we used to visit each other. And boy, you should have been there some of those nights.

And we used to play games with the boys. You should see him down on his knees, you know, with somebody on his back. It's really wonderful. And we used to romp and fun and enjoy ourselves, and it went on for the early hours of the morning.

You would have thought you were in heaven, for there was no night there. None at all. But in the real sense, there'll be no night there. The solar system is gone. The seasons are gone. The storms are gone.

The showers have gone. The land is alight. There's no night there. No night. Watch what it says then. It says, verse 26,. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations. Get it now. Endure it.

Oh, I believe you know that this gravity is going to have to go. And they'll be able to come from earth right into the new Jerusalem. And they'll bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. Yes, because our Lord will be Lord both of heaven and earth.

Now, here's the verse that John stopped this scene at this moment with. Verse 27, And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh alive.

Here's the only thought that will get in. They which are written in the Lamb's book of life. And make this clear now. We're not talking about the book of life. We're talking about the Lamb's book of life.

You don't forget your name in the Lamb's book of life. You have to have a connection with the Lamb. Oh, I can remember the day, you know. I can remember the day, standing in rites, when I said, Oh, Lamb of God.

I can't. Friend, get your name on the Lamb's book of life tonight. Because if your name's not on the Lamb's book of life, it doesn't make a matter who you are. You can be a Baptist. You can be a Brethren.

You can be a Methodist. You can be a Presbyterian. You're good as hell. You'll need to have a connection with the Lamb. Now, next week we're going back to those verses we left out. And then the next week we're following on with this great and wonderful chapter at the end of the book.

I think we'll sing Amazing Grace tonight. Eight hundred and ninety-four. And there are only four verses there, but we'd better go on to the other one.
