The Need to Watch Ourselves for Needless Weights

Please now turn in your Bible to Luke chapter 21. Luke chapter 21, we'll begin reading in verse 34. When you have that, go ahead and stand. But watch yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life.

And that day come upon you suddenly like a trap, for it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.

Amen.

You may be seated.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word and the instruction that we have through Jesus Christ. It's a great privilege that we have been instructed with these things of the future. We ask that we would take them to heart and put them into practice.

In Jesus' name, amen. So in this passage in Luke 21, Jesus prepares us for the future. And now having given many details about what is to take place in the future, gives us instruction about particularly what we are to do and the time that we have remaining given that judgment is coming.

We must prepare, we must watch ourselves. That is the key command in this passage is watch yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, being needlessly weighed down.

Many people primarily think of their duty before God in terms of things that are inherently sins. As long as they avoid those things that are inherently sins, they are in the clear. One way of speaking of this is they are primarily concerned about sins of commission.

Sins of commission is where God's law says not to do some particular thing, and then you do that thing. However, there are also sins of omission where God has called you positively to certain things and you would neglect those things and for the sake of something else and thereby sin against him.

And this is the kind of thing that Jesus has in mind here. Some of these things when he speaks of drunkenness are inherently sinful, but other things are not. Pleasures and moderations are not, the cares of this world are not of themselves inherently sinful, but so many people are trapped and ensnared by these things and weighed down by them because they are primarily thinking of their duty before God in terms of those things that are inherently sins, in terms of sins of commission.

But Christ calls us to live our whole life in obedience to him and live our whole life following him with a sense of mission before him. I believe this is one of the main things that is missing in the way that people think about their duty before God is they often do not think positively of their duty before God.

They only think negatively of those things that they are not to do. This ends up giving people a fairly a, there's two parts of this. It ends up breeding a legalistic spirit in which they obey the word of God slavishly, not doing the things because they're not supposed to do them and it is not particularly joyful or rewarding because they aren't thinking positively about what God has called them to.

But then on the other hand, because they aren't thinking positively about what God has called them to and they only have these certain things that they think are off limits, it leads to a very antinomian spirit.

Antinomian means being against the law of God where all things are permissible if we don't have a particular verse against these things. But so much of life and what God has instructed us in is very much reoriented when we try to do all things for the glory of God and we think positively of the mission that he has given us.

The Positive Mission of the Sabbath and Women’s Ministry

Just think about a couple of different questions that people ask themselves in life about what they must do before God. People ask about how to honor the Lord's day and they think about the things that they shouldn't do on the Lord's day and often people will reject the whole category of the Sabbath or even the Lord's day altogether thinking that it just seems too difficult to follow these commands, that we aren't supposed to do different things.

But once you start thinking about this positively and I've spoken with many people who have had the same experience that as they start thinking about this positively of how the day is given for the worship of the Lord and they start reorienting their thoughts of what the right use of the day would be when they are thinking positively of what they are called to in that mission before God, suddenly more joyful and they find it easy to identify many things that they should cut out.

Many things that aren't inherently sinful but then it just becomes obvious that those things are needless weights that are keeping them from the duty that God has given them on this day of worship. Consider how also people answer questions about women's role in church.

Many people will look at 1 Timothy 2 and they will try to answer the question, what is a woman's role in church? Okay, well Paul says on a couple of occasions that women are not supposed to have authority over men so maybe it's okay if women teach other women and so you have whole theology classes that are being led by women for women so that supposedly there's some advantage in doing that or you give women an opportunity to exercise their gift because they're not allowed to for some reason in this other category.

But what does that do? That breeds some kind of arbitrary distinction so that the limitation, feeling arbitrary, is not a joyful one but rather if you look at it positively and you ask what positively has God given women as a mission and even in that same passage it talks about childbearing.

Even in Titus 2 it speaks about older women encouraging younger women, et cetera and the kind of teaching that they would be giving for younger women, not primarily systematic theology and things like that but how to love their husbands, et cetera, these kinds of encouragements that women are supposed to be giving other women and you begin thinking about that positively and suddenly it's obvious that these other things are simply distractions from the main mission that God has given.

If there is mission, then there is mission drift and we should be on guard for anything that is mission drift that takes us away from the calling that we have before God. I believe this is something that we need to be constantly bringing back to mind of what is the positive mission that God has given us and then living in light of that positive mission so that we are not distracted by the cares of this world.

Jesus says in verse 34, but watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life. Dissipation referring to an overindulgence in things, drunkenness particularly referring to an overindulgence in alcohol, that which would take away sobriety.

The cares of this life referring to just the ordinary things that would be here in this life. Elsewhere, we're told of marriage and being given in marriage, we're told of working and prosperity, all kinds of things that God has commanded, but may be distracting in as much as we do not think about the mission that God has given.

In Matthew 24, this particular part, this discourse is much longer. Luke has moved many of those things to Luke 17. In Luke 17, he talks about the days of Noah and of Lot, how people were marrying and being given in marriage, basically just caught up in the cares of the world.

These things are not bad things, they are good things. Marriage, being given in marriage, those days of Noah and Lot. A lot of people think of it as times of great wickedness. That is right to think of those as times of great wickedness, but you should be primarily thinking of them as a wickedness that attends with prosperity.

That the time of Lot was a time of prosperity. Sodom and Gomorrah were not at the time known for great wickedness, that's how we think of them later after their judgment. What they were known for at the time was having so much prosperity.

When Abraham saved the king of Sodom in the time before, when Lot was captured away, et cetera, and he saved the king of Sodom, the king of Sodom brought Abraham much wealth. Abraham ended up refusing this wealth, but you can see in that passage that Sodom is an incredibly wealthy nation, an incredibly wealthy city.

Likewise, during the time of Noah, if you can imagine a time where the people are gathered, where they are all still speaking one language at that time, many years are passing where people are living long lifetimes.

If you've never thought about this, just imagine how much technological advancement one could have if you compare it to our own society where people live for 70 years or so, only spend about, what, 50, 60, maybe at most, maybe less, 40 in their career actually being productive, and then another generation has to start over, and that start over just happens repeatedly.

People at that time living for centuries, being able to develop their skills and build things, and no great judgments coming on them for so many years until the flood, Noah's time was a time of great prosperity.

So these are times of wickedness because the people had such prosperity and were taken away by the cares of this world. Just like Jesus has said before that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.

Why is that? Because he is taken up with the cares of this world, very easily taken up with the cares of this world. Does not mean that any of these things are evil. In fact, they are all commanded, but they are very potentially distracting if you forget what you are actually called to do and keep watch over yourself that you are not distracted by anything.

These things are weights. That day will come suddenly upon people like a trap. Judgment is coming. And these things weigh one down because they keep people from preparing for judgment the way they ought, doing business with the Lord, serving the Lord, making sure that they are right before the Lord, repenting of sins as they arrive.

God forgives his people. He forgives them of all their past, present, and future sins but God's people are likewise called to repent of all their known sins individually. And the one who permits his sins to crop up, never turning to the Lord in repentance is not one who truly knows him because God works in the hearts of his people to turn from such things.

It says in verse 35, "'For it will come upon all who dwell "'upon the face of the whole earth.'". Judgment is unavoidable. Judgment is coming and is unavoidable. We can consider this judgment in several different parts, this judgment that should have us concerned about escaping it.

First, there is that judgment that is coming upon Jerusalem. This is the most direct thing that Jesus is talking about here in this passage. The disciples had asked him at the beginning, what is the sign that these things will be when Jesus said that the temple would be destroyed?

That was in verse five where Jesus talked about the temple being destroyed. In verse seven, they asked, when will these things be? And so Jesus has been talking primarily about the destruction of the temple.

And even in this most recent verse, he had told them, this generation will not pass away, this is verse 32, until all has taken place. That indicates that he's talking about a near-term judgment. He's talking about the judgment that will come upon Jerusalem.

Yet, as hopefully has been evident as we've gone through this passage, this points forward to the judgment that is to come. Just as Jerusalem would be surrounded by armies and destroyed by Titus in AD 70, so it is the case that God's church, his temple, will be surrounded by armies on that final day as it is described in Revelation chapter 20.

Yet, Jerusalem being destroyed, God's church will not be destroyed. That day will come suddenly and we must be ready for it. Now, third, you can also think of this judgment as the judgment that comes individually, not just that one that came in the first century, not the one that comes in the last century, whenever the last century may be, but the one that will come for you individually as your life comes to an end, whether you live to see the return of Jesus Christ or whether you don't.

You will stand before the Lord in judgment. That day will come upon you and you must be ready for this. This judgment has several qualities. First of all, it is universal. He says it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the earth.

This does not just come upon some, it comes upon all. Many people live their life as though they will escape judgment. Many people essentially live their life in denial, trying not to think about death, going about life trying to be productive by not thinking that death will come.

Many people are very successful in keeping it out of their mind, but it is to their own harm because then they are not ready for it. It is also something that comes suddenly. Judgment comes suddenly. There are not many warning signs that is happening.

This has been evident as he has spoken about those things that will come before the Son of Man returns at the very end, but also what will happen or what had happened before Jerusalem was surrounded by armies.

Those final signs, well, there are signs all throughout that remind the people that judgment is coming. The final signs that come just before the end are things that are very sudden, where there is not a long gap between the final sign and the final end.

So it is something that happens suddenly. Because it happens suddenly, it comes surprisingly to many people because many people will not be ready. And so because of that, they will be ensnared. He says in the next verse, there will be more looking at next week, but the next verse says, pray that you have strength to escape all these things.

The idea being that many will not escape, that many will be trapped by that. You can think of that as an ensnarement. And so many people, as they come to the end of their life and they're realizing what they have spent their life on are surprised and they are trapped.

And it's an incredible thing because on one hand, they have been sufficiently warned. Everybody knows that death is coming, that they will stand before their maker, whether they acknowledge that outwardly or not, everyone knows that there is an end and that they need some kind of way to deal with that end.

So people spend their life preparing for their end. Rather, they spend their life preparing for something that would just, they spend their life living as though they're going to live forever when this is not the case.

Ecclesiastes has said, God has put eternity into the heart of man. And so men have this idea that they are going to continue on forever, but the idea that they would continue on forever in the same form of existence that they do now is utter foolishness.

Of course, that is not how things will be. Yet, even though many will be ensnared, it is an escapable judgment. Says in that verse, verse 36,.

That you should pray.

That you would have the strength to escape. It is something that is escapable. It is something that you can prepare for. It is something that we should be preparing for even now, that we should be watchful over ourselves to prepare for that.

If you went to college, you may have this experience that is common among those who went to college, which is that even now, later on in your life, you look, you frequently, or not frequently, but occasionally will have a dream that you had a class that you did not prepare for the exam for.

I don't know about you, but that never actually happened to me during college where I didn't attend class all semester and then suddenly went to, suddenly remembered that there's a final exam. But for some reason, I get those kinds of dreams.

Maybe you've had experiences like that. Maybe you've had dreams where that kind of anxiety hits you and you realize that you are entirely unprepared for something that you should be prepared for. This is how many will be on that last day, just having not prepared the entire time and realizing that it is time.

You will have to stand before your Maker. You will have to give an account for all the deeds done in the body, whether good or evil. You must be preparing for that final day. Ephesians 5 .16 tells us that the days are evil and so we must redeem the time.

The time that we have right now is very short. We should be redeeming that time, preparing ourselves to stand before Him. Now, these weights that are spoken of here, there are several different ones that are described.

There is dissipation, drunkenness, and cares of this life. One way that you can think about this is across these three, we could divide them into those things that are inherently sinful.

And those are not.

Drunkenness, inherently sinful. Dissipation, just being an overindulgence in things that would otherwise be good, not referring to something that is inherently sinful. The overindulgence is inherently sinful, but the things themselves are not.

The cares of this life, not inherently sinful. So much of what he is speaking of here are things that in the right measure are not inherently sinful. You can also think of those things that may be divided between pleasures and those things that are duties and work.

So some of these things are things that are pleasurable. Some of these things are things that you have to do. Both of those may fall into these categories of things that will be distractions for us. I particularly like the word dissipation.

It's not a word that you see elsewhere in the ESV, but it is a word that appears here. It is not even necessarily the best translation of the word that is used right here, but if you think about what dissipation means literally in English, it is a dissipating of something.

Something that has gathered and has potency, spreads about and does not have any potency. While this word does not necessarily have that meaning in it in Greek, there was a word that was used earlier in Luke that did mean that, and that was the wasteful and reckless living of the prodigal son.

In fact, the word prodigal refers to scattering. And this is a word that you see throughout the Old Testament or at least the concept that you see throughout the Old Testament, where the people, when they lose their strength, are scattered, and when they're gathered together, they have strength, they have potency.

So it is with us that when we engage in pleasures that are overindulgent, it is something that is dissipating. You take all that strength that you would have, and as you give your money, as you give your time to those pleasures, you are dissipating.

You are taking away those resources that you had gathered together, that focus that you had gathered together, and you are dissipating it so you no longer have potency. You no longer have real power to accomplish the things that God would call you to.

I think that the word dissipation is a very good way of thinking about overindulgence. When you examine your life and you think about your use of pleasures, whether they be in moderation or not, a good way to think about it is dissipation.

Am I dissipating? Am I dispersing myself, taking those things that have been collected, whether it be money and time, and then just suspending it away, dispersing it so it cannot be used for anything else?

In the Westminster Larger Catechism, for the Sixth Commandment, it describes things that are forbidden, and it cites this verse and speaks of distracting cares, immoderate use of meat, drink, labor, and recreations, and whatever else tends to the destruction of any in this life.

It's an incredible thing. The Sixth Commandment is thou shall not murder. It is a command against murder. And what is included in it? Distracting cares, immoderate use of meat, drink, labor, and recreations, and whatsoever else tends to the destruction of any in this life.

Distracting cares are something that tend to the destruction, that tend to destruction in this life. When you are distracted by things, not doing those things that you are to do, you are headed to destruction.

You should not be headed to destruction. You should be thinking about how you can be serving the Lord in the way that he has called you, running the race, headed to the end prize, the goal. Just to give you some statistics on the way that people spend their lives and waste them.

And these statistics, on one hand, are somewhat unbelievable. On the other hand, I think as you think about them, you might see that they are very true. These statistics, I believe, are all for the United States.

Social media, the average person spends 2 .5 hours a day on social media, which is over 6 .5 years in a lifetime. And that's including, you know, sleeping time, those years. So if you were to spread that over a work week, it would be much longer.

The average American spends three hours a day on TV. It's almost 10 years in a lifetime. Think about that, just 16 .5 years of a lifetime just wasted on relatively meaningless things. Now, I'm not opposed to entertainment.

You know, God has blessed us with a world full of enjoyable things. In particular, he made food one of the most enjoyable things.

To be enjoyable.

That was for our good. He wants us to enjoy some of the pleasures in this world in right moderation. But people dissipate, and they take a good thing that God has given, and they overindulge in it such that they are not equipped to do the things that they are supposed to do beyond that.

Think about the way people spend their money. The average consumer spends over $300 a month on impulse buys. That's a wild number. If you imagine that being a subscription that you would have, if you subscribe to impulse buys, who would sign up for that?

Hey, we'll give you a, you know those box subscriptions that you can order, right, where they give you just a bunch of random things that they bought wholesale? Right, imagine just spending $300 a month for some random impulse buys.

But the average consumer spends over $300 a month on impulse buys. In California, almost $1 ,000 a year, the average resident of California spends almost $100 ,000 a year just on credit card interest so that they can buy the things that they want and not have to save up for them.

Now I know sometimes people are in desperate need and don't seem to know what else to do. But to use a credit card to get things because you want them now and aren't willing to spend it, you're willing to suffer to have them later.

Almost $1 ,000 a year per individual resident in California. This is how people live their lives. God has called us to serve him. Who wants to be found on the last day having wasted so much time, so much money on frivolous things?

These will be accounted for. You will have to look that number in the eye. Right now you can not think about it. You can just not worry about it. You don't have to really know what it is. If you've ever tried dieting and exercising, some days you're tempted to not look at the scale because you just don't want to know the number.

If things haven't been going well on the diet. This is how many people are treating their use of their time and their money. They're just trying to not think about that number because it's easier to be in denial.

But on that last day, you will have to face it. Our focus needs to be on the Lord. We can not be distracted by bread and circuses. Our focus needs to be on the Lord. And we can do that. We can live before him as he has called us to by being watchful.

It says in verse 34, but watch yourselves. You can be watchful. Now this is a difficult thing to do. This is not an easy thing to do to be watchful. Consider just the nature of your eyes. Okay, your eyes are things that see everything else.

They do not see yourself. To see yourself is something where you need an extra tool. You need a mirror to be able to do that. The same thing is true to some degree with your soul is it is hard to analyze yourself.

Others can analyze you often easier than you can analyze yourself. And ultimately to truly know yourself, you must know God, who is the one who can expose the heart, who can demonstrate things by his word.

There's a poem that I very much like, a book-length poem, and I occasionally quote it. I feel like I quote this probably a different passage in this once every four months or so. But John Davies, an early Anglican, wrote a book called Noce Te Absum, which means know thyself.

It's about this task of the soul trying to understand itself. He says in this poem, that power which gave me eyes the world to view to see myself infused with an inward light, whereby my soul as a mirror true of her own form may take a perfect sight.

So he's saying it is possible for the soul to understand itself by equipment given by God. But as the sharpest eye discerneth not except the sunbeams in the air do shine, so the best soul with her reflecting thought sees not herself without some light divine.

Okay, so to understand yourself requires divine light. It requires the word of God. It requires the illumination from the spirit of God to truly understand yourself. God has provided everything needed for salvation through Jesus Christ, having died on the cross, provides forgiveness of sins so that one may be right with God.

If you have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ, you have been made right with God. Yet escaping that judgment is not merely framed in terms of being right with God as justification, but also being preserved through the trials of this life.

These trials being truly trials, a trial being a test. God having sent things to test, to demonstrate who his true people are, we must escape these things. Do you understand that that's what's going on?

It's not that God doesn't know and so he's testing to see who is true. It's that others don't know and he is testing to demonstrate who his people are. This is what he did with Abraham. Abraham believed and God counted it as righteousness.

10 years later, God justifies him before the sight of men through calling him to sacrifice his own son, this being called very directly a test. And it is something that demonstrates to all that Abraham is right before God.

Many people are self-deceived to think that they are right before God because they think that if you walk an aisle or something like that, you're right before God. Now you can have peace with God as you trust in him, but he has given to his people, not only the blessing of peace with him, but also the blessing of being upheld by his spirit to go through the trial so that on that last day, as his people are vindicated, they may enjoy the blessings of being vindicated along with Jesus Christ.

This is all part of the salvation that God has given. If you are at peace with God, amen. But he has called us to continue on watching over ourselves going through the trials of this life so that we may enjoy all the fruits of salvation that come, all the benefits of redemption that come along with that peace that we have with God.

Do not deprive yourself of some of those blessings thinking that forgiveness is the end of it. Forgiveness is the core of it, the root of it from which all other things come. That imputed justification, that righteousness of Christ that is credited to his people is the foundation of it all, but it is not the all itself.

Christ is much greater than just one benefit. All the benefits of redemption are given to us in him and do not neglect these. They are to be enjoyed immensely following after Jesus Christ, suffering with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Watch over yourselves. Now, there are many ways that people wrongly try to watch over themselves and discern when they are over encumbered by the cares of this world. A lot of times these will be discerned culturally, right?

If someone has an unmet desire that concerns them and that concern seems to be one that is either greater than what other people in the world have or a desire that is being unmet, particularly long given the cultural norms, right?

Given cultural norms, maybe it seems that, oh, well, this is supposed to take a long time. It's very difficult, whether it be building up wealth in order to pass on an inheritance, whether it be building up a family, just all kinds of, once again, good things that God has instructed us to do.

A lot of times people will judge these things culturally so that if they take a lot of time in the culture, then you should not want them to happen faster. And if you desire them more than people in the culture do, then you should desire them less.

Do not think about it that way. Think about it scripturally. You should desire things the way that scripture has told you to desire them. You should want them in the measure that scripture has told you to want them in, which includes the eagerness for those things.

That is how you should analyze whether or not you are over-concerned with a particular care, idolizing it. The other thing is that you should be thinking about all things in terms of whether or not they are honoring to God.

When you are involved in some care of this world, whether it be a pleasure, whether it be work, whether it be something productive or something enjoyable, something entertainment, ask yourself, does this honor God?

And then how does it honor God? These are questions that you can be asking yourself. I put together several other inventory questions that you can ask yourself to see whether or not you're distracted by the cares of this world.

And you can come up with a list of 100 things if you wanted, but just several for you. Ask yourself, what do you spend your time on? Okay, what do you spend your time on? Spending time on something is not necessarily bad, but ask yourself, what is the thing that you spend the most time on?

And ask yourself, is that healthy? What do you spend your time on? What causes me the most stress? Think about the things in your life, what things are you the most anxious about? Are you concerned about them in a way that God would have you be concerned about them?

Are you concerned about them beyond that in a way that is not trusting him? What causes me the most stress? What do I think about as I rise or as I'm going to sleep? That's a good question. What do you think about as you rise and as you go to sleep?

You know, in the morning, are you thinking about things in context of how you are going to serve the Lord? Or are you thinking about all the things that you are going to do without being in context of how you are going to serve the Lord?

Same thing with as you go to bed. When things are difficult, where do you go for comfort? Is it just through fleshly pleasures or is it to the Lord? Would I be ready to meet the Lord tonight? Would you be ready to meet the Lord tonight?

What would you think that, oh, I have not, I have neglected this one area and I wish I had been more watchful during that time. What aspects would you wish that you had taken care of and been more watchful over?

And then if I knew that I were to meet the Lord five years from today, so I made this a moderate period of time, not a lifetime away, but also not immediately. If I knew I were to meet the Lord five years from today, what things would I drop to figure that out?

You know, what things would you, what things in your life would you realize are needless weights that I need to just get rid of in order to serve the Lord rightly? You know, ask yourself these various questions.

This is how you can think about discerning whether or not you are weighed down by needless cares. There's several responses that people have to needless cares. One of them is asceticism. Now, asceticism is a denial of self.

Now, there is a good kind of denial of self. I've heard the term reformed asceticism before. I think that's a good term. We're supposed to be denying ourself, carrying a cross, following Jesus Christ.

There's a lot of time that we're supposed to be denying ourself. But a lot of people will deny pleasures altogether. Now, I don't think that's a very common issue in our culture. It's not a very common danger.

However, there is a complete sort of asceticism that people do where they also, in addition to denying themselves pleasures, deny themselves productivity. This is the case if you go back and you look at different eras where people engaged in monastic life.

Some of them were trying to remove all the pleasures from their life. Others were also just removing productivity. And so they were just doing nothing at all because they didn't want to be weighed down by any cares in this world.

Now, that is a sinful way of approaching it because now you are removing the good things that God has told you to enjoy. And particularly, if it's work, it is a good thing that you must be pursuing for the sake of others.

There are a lot of people who will be lazy, unambitious in life, and then they will sanctify it. They will talk about it, about how, oh, well, other people are just too caught up in the cares of this world, or I just don't want to be the kind of person who is too greedy about things, et cetera.

And so they live life where they're not working very hard, they're not really serving the Lord very greatly, but then they speak about it in a way that suggests they think, or they want others to think, that it's out of a great service to the Lord that they're living their lives so unambitiously.

Do not engage in that sort of asceticism. Okay, another thing that people do is they will replace one care with another. Now, you know this pattern for addicts. I think people are a little more conscious about these sorts of things now, but I've known multiple people who were addicted to cigarettes and then really congratulated themselves when they had switched to vaping, right?

You're just replacing one vice with another, that's not doing it. Okay, don't replace one care with another. There was a pretty well-known teacher that's promoted by an even more well-known teaching organization this past week who was encouraging people that if they have been over-encumbered with the idol of pursuing family, that they should instead just dedicate themselves to a career.

That sounds to me like if we grant the premise that someone is overburdened by a particular care of one thing, that sounds like just encouraging replacement with a different sort of care. This is not the right way to think about it, just replacing one care with another.

Also, another way people think about this, and I think this is probably the most common, and it is very well-intentioned, but it is not the right way of thinking about it, is to think about it in terms of balance.

Right, people will say, okay, well, you need to live your life before the Lord. These things are good, enjoying some of the good things in this life, as our catechism says about the Lord's Prayer when we pray for our daily bread.
