These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13
**I. Assurance: **Imbalances and extremes to avoid
- “[Presumption] may be defined as the condition of a soul which, because of a badly regulated reliance on God's mercy and power, hopes for salvation without doing anything to deserve it [salvation]…” (Catholic Encyclopedia)
II. The beloved apostle wrote this letter to God’s people for several reasons.
- Knowledge of the doctrinal truth in John’s letter is a means which God uses to personally assure us of our salvation in an ongoing, enduring sense.
III. Is this verse law or gospel?
- The biblical doctrine of assurance requires and presupposes a proper law and gospel balance and distinction.
- The 1689 London Baptist Confession (and most Reformed confessions) dedicates an entire chapter on the doctrine of assurance.
IV. Biblical ongoing assurance is like a well-watered tree—with roots, trunk, fruits
- External, objective, and internal, subjective means of assurance
- Means of Grace
