The Lord's Supper — Wayne Guindon

The Lord's Supper in 1 Corinthians 11

This is Wayne Guidon speaking on November 29th, 2009.

I'd like to read in 1 Corinthians chapter 11. 1 Corinthians chapter 11 and verse 17. Now in this I declare unto you I praise you not that you come together not for the better but for the worse. For first of all when you come together in the church I hear that there be divisions among you and I partly believe it.

But what may be made manifest among you is this is not to eat the Lord's Supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper. And one is hungry and another is drunken. Yes that's what it says.

This is to eat in and to drink in or despise ye the church of God and shame them which have not. I praise you in this I praise you not. Verse 23. Verse 17 to 22 were hindrances to the Lord's Supper. Verses 23 to 26 is the institution of the Lord's Supper.

And then verses 27 to 34 is preparation for the Lord's Supper. Verse 23. And when he had given thanks he broke it and said take eat. This is my body which is broken for you this do in remembrance of me.

And after the same manner when he had supped saying this cup is the new testament in my blood. This do as oft as you drink it in remembrance of me. For as oft as you drink this bread and eat this bread and drink this cup you do show the Lord's death till he comes.

For whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body of man himself. And so let him eat of that nation to himself discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep.

We should not be judged but when we are judged we are chastened of the Lord that we should not be condemned with the world. Wherefore my brethren when you come together to eat tarry one for another. And if any man hunger let him eat at home that you come not together unto condemnation.

And the rest will I set in order when I come. Lord will bless to us the reading of this word. This portion has been on my heart as I move around the Lord's people. It is one of the things that Christians in the assemblies we do more than any other group of Christians around probably.

We remember the Lord. Some of you here that are sitting here now you have not done this this morning. Maybe you slept in the extra hour. You needed your sleep and you arrived to attend this preaching meeting.

Or maybe you sinned and trusted Christ as your Savior. There's various reasons. Or maybe your life isn't in order just yet. And what do you say we go away and get stuck in the mouth. Settling in the middle of the house.

You would sort of try. 1973 until 1976. I moved back to PEI. And then I moved. And I was living in a place called Aldergrove. I was working as a butcher at Canada Packers in Vancouver. And I went to some gospel meetings that Albert Ramsey and Ed Billingham were having in the Ladner Garden.

Christ as my Savior. I realized for the first time that I was a lost guilty sinner on my way to hell and into the world. And he shed his precious blood so that I might be healed. He sort of scanned me.

And he says, Why didn't everybody get saved tonight? And I said, I did. He says, How do you know that? You were sure that you were saved. And I said, I realized I was a lost guilty sinner. And Christ died on the cross for my sins.

Meeting on Sunday morning. And we have a meeting on Wednesday night for prayer. In that country we've been back home now. And it sort of seems to pass over the top of us. And he says, We've just read this wonderful New Testament ordinances.

One is baptism. Which every believer should be baptized. They should be immersed. They should be dunked on a daily basis. And we'll get into that. We want to think about the Lord Jesus. Baptizing people.

The New Testament writers expounded on baptism. And the New Testament writers expounded on the Lord Jesus. The remembrance of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the breaking of bread and drinking of the cup. Teaching this.

Why do we teach this from a public platform? It's because we were. You know they say a family that prays together stays together. Stays together. Stays together. Stays together. And it's very important.

Christian mom or dad. Your children. Children to the Bible. Wednesday night at the prayer meeting in Ladner. They're always there. Teaching our children to pray. And we think about the first was the gospel years ago.

Fellowship With Christ and the Lord's Supper

March 19, 1976. When I was invited to that gospel supper. And I accepted the invitation. When the Lord is come and open unto me. I will come in and sup with him. And he with me. That fellowship. And then there was Jesus.

Convenient for me. You know I'm not a very good. To use. And then we have the marriage supper of the Lamb. Revelation chapter 19. Another thing I want to point out. It is the Lord's Supper. You know the word Lord is mentioned.

Corinthians chapter 11. Verses 20 to verses 32. Seven times we see the word Lord. So the supper belongs to him. It's this. Wicca Seer. Wicca Sire. Okay. Everybody confused. It's a French Canadian name.

So I'm not offended. I just want to clarify that. Like Wicca Sire. Ginden. Okay. Those two things. They sort of go together. He's the one that guides. He's the one that puts into our hearts. The desire to get our sins from us.

It's wonderful that we can. Eternally grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ. Use. We use. It's interesting. 49 and do. That's the way it is. Each one. This was another national. And he says can I sit down with you.

Oh no. We'll be there. Tribes and nations because their governments have restricted the work of the gospel. And they have held out the grace of God from the people receiving it. You know even the Lord.

Christ's Flesh, Blood, and the Meaning of the Emblems

About you have counted yourself unworthy of salvation. We have these words. Except you eat of the flesh of the Son of God and drink his blood. You have no life in you. Whosoever eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood.

And you know when I. We had a little. And you would walk. This on top of your tongue. I never figured out. Drinks. And I'll go back. What's the. Jail if I stole one of those wafers. And Christians don't steal anyway.

Right. But anyway. They say. That that. They say that is the blood. And body. Of Jesus. The wafer. The host. Symbols. We believe they are. Emblems. We call them emblems. Or a symbol. Of the body. And the blood of Christ.

When he said. This is my. He was. Taking a piece of bread. This is my body. But his body was here. So that shows us. It was symbolic. This is my. He was showing us. That these were symbolic. Emblems. That were being represented.

There. 47. He that believed. Before. It says. He that eats. My. Drinks. My blood. Has. That's not what the Bible teaches. Does it? Repentance. Towards God. And faith. In the Lord Jesus Christ. As the way of salvation.

To anybody. That wants to come. In 1 Corinthians chapter 11. We have five details. They are not found. In the institution of the Lord's Supper. In Matthew. Mark. And Luke. And what are they? We are participating in the M.

Remembering the Lord Until He Comes

28 and 31. The discernment. Of the participation. May result. In the chastening hand. Of the Lord. Upon the Lord. The Lord's Supper. Is to continue. Until he comes. You notice. It is repeated twice. In verse 24 and 25.

At a funeral. I just heard about. A funeral. People spend. At that funeral. You find something good. In Chile. They used to have this. This. And they would look in. At the body. And before they would leave.

And see the guy. And he is thinking. I can not remember anything good. And all of a sudden. He is thinking of the bread. And the drinking of the cup. Give us some idea. And they say. Well I really have nothing new.

To give you something. To think about. Ponder this. To be saved. From every patient. Lamentation. Says it. Acquainted with grief. Praise this Lord. We can remember his words. There is never a man. Spake like.

This man. In this section. We have the word. Come together. We should be. Making people. Feel at home. In our house. It speaks about. Error. In the Lord's Supper. And yes. Error can creep in. That is why.

Order, Oversight, and Conduct in the Church

It's response. Should be. Overseeing. He has made you. Overseers. And he has put you. In the midst. Ravenous wolves. Operation. There is a big difference. Between. What God has given us. And what we have.

Given back to him. You know. It's possible. To remember. And not. Remember. The Lord. You know that? You can come here. And break bread. You can spend. Your hour and a half. And you can sit. All prim and prop.

You can sing all the hymns. Maybe it's this bell. The children. What activities. They have ongoing. Through this week. That we come here. Disciplined. And focus. On the Lord. Jesus Christ. Church of God.

First Timothy. Three fifteen. Paul's advice. To Timothy. That you may know. How you. Ought to behave. Yourself. In the house of God. Verse twenty three. To twenty six. The institution. Of the Lord's supper.

The Institution of the Supper and Christ's Sacrifice

First of all. The authority. Was from the Lord. Received of the Lord. That which I have. Also delivered. Unto you. That the Lord. Jesus. The same night. In which he was. Betrayed. Or being betrayed. Took bread.

Thanks. He break it. And said. Take it. This is my body. Which is broken. For you. Like a cat. Chasing. Chasing her tail. Cats don't do that. Very often. Anyway. But. But. You know what I'm talking about.

And compare. Verse. With verse. And God. Will illuminate. Our darkened. Minds. Breaking bread. Dip the sop. With him. And after the sop. Which was part of the Passover. He. Immediately. Went out. So that.

That was going to lay down. His life. For him. He says. Take. Eat. That piece of bread. And I don't like it. And you take a little piece. Not the way it was done. He said. How can you do that? Very simple.

I'm sure. Concentrate. And think about. The Lord Jesus Christ. That gave. His. Body. For me. Jesus. Thank you for giving. And he said. This was the blood. That was shed. For the remission of sins. I take this cup.

As a symbol of your blood. Which you shed. For my redemption. We show. You know. It doesn't say. We remember. His death. Even though we do. It's the idea. We're preaching. His. Passion. Until he come.

Self-Examination and Worthy Participation

You know. One thing. That we have. He says. The Lord. In 2011. That you don't miss. The Lord's Supper. We celebrate. The Lord's Supper. There's a look back. Where he shed. His precious blood. He suffered.

A violent. Cruel death. On the right hand. Of the Father. In his place. As a guilty sinner. And is therefore. Crucifying Christ. 10 .22 says. Let us draw near. With a true heart. Some people. Use this.

As an excuse. To not partake. Let a man. Examine himself. So somebody says. Well. Doing very good. Last week. So I better not partake. This week. I better wait. Another week. Before I celebrate. The Lord's Supper.

But you know. What the Lord is saying. In this verse here. It says. Let a man. Examine himself. So what does he mean by that? He says. As an excuse. For another week. Another month. And so on. No. He wants us.

To get right. With God. Right now. And sickly. Among you. And many sleep. He that eateth. And drinketh. Unworthily. Eateth. And drinketh. Damnation to himself. Not discerning. The Lord's body. These are very.

Very. Very. Weighty. Verses. That come too lightly. Some to become too. Flippantly. Just saying. Oh yeah. Where are you going? Oh. I'm going to meet him. To see the Lord. We're here this morning. He wised it.

Or not. So we seem to get distracted. We get into our religious. Traditions. And rituals. And we go to meet him. Instead of. Go to see the Lord. Something to the Lord. Remember the. Not to come in. With their hands.

Empty. And there to come in. Did you come to the. Lord's Supper. With your hands. Empty. This morning. So what do I talk. What am I talking about? It's coming. With the heart. Prepared. Meditating upon the Holy Scriptures.

Going through your hymn book. And meditating. Choosing him. Not just waiting. Oh there's my favorite hymn number. No. Back. It's not remembering the Lord. Yes. The Lord does speak to us. All of a sudden.

A brother gets up and prays. Oh. You said. Oh. That hymn would be. Perfect with that. That's right. That's the Holy Spirit. Working in your life. And impressing you. With. With. True. Worship and adoration.

Considering One Another in the Assembly

About self-discipline. In verse 32. And verse 33. It talks about. Caring. For one another. Or waiting. For one another. There's some people. That come to meeting. Late. You can. Put your. You can. Come in 10 minutes late.

Isn't that true? So some people say. Well. You're supposed to come in. You're supposed to be waiting. For that brother. Well. You know. I was thinking. If you take 50 people. 100 minutes. That they have robbed.

A group of people. So that person. Really has to. Think about the others. The idea is. Consideration. One. Of another. You know. Last week. I had. Plans to be. At a certain meeting. At a certain time.

And I was leaving early. An hour. I couldn't get into my car. We're listening to my alarm going. Never so embarrassed. And frustrated. Trying to. Trying to get out of there. And the cars. They shut down.

When the alarms. Are like that too. Anyway. The whole idea. Is that we're to. Think about one another. Not together. On to condemnation. And the rest. Will I set an order. When I come. In 1st Corinthians.

Plurality of Gifts and Edifying Worship

Chapter. Verse 26. You have. When you come together. Every one of you. Has a psalm. And has a doctrine. Has a tongue. Has a revelation. Has an interpretation. Let all things. Be done. On to edifying. Some apostles.

Some prophets. And some evangelists. And some pastors. Teachers. The reason why I read. In the local church. It's not. A one man ministry. But it is. A one at a time. Ministry. One time. I was in El Salvador.

And a brother said. Hey. Let's go. At this church. I have an opportunity. To go. And you can. Preach the gospel there. There's 8 ,000 people. I said. Okay. Well. This should be interesting. I go there.

And there's 8 ,000. It was like an air. Like these massive speakers. And then 8 ,000 other people. Started praying. I wanted to get out of there. As fast as I could. And certainly. Didn't want to go back.

To a place like that. Wisdom. First Corinthians. 14 and 3. Talks about. Advocation. Exhortation. And comfort. So we have the exposition. Explanation. And application. Of the word of God. That's what we've tried.

To do this morning. We've tried. To lay out. In an order. That God has given to us. He has commanded us. He said. This do in remembrance of me. John chapter 4. It says. The Lord is seeking. Worshippers.

Worship, Prayer, and Looking to Christ's Return

You come to a prayer meeting. It's a time to ask. It's a time to listen. To the word. That's in store. For us. Until. He come. Let us pray. We're thankful. For the opportunity. To open up your word. We're thankful.

That even though. It was of the church. And whosoever will. May come. We think about. The Lord Jesus. His own words. To his own. And as many. As received him. To them. Gave he power. To become. The sons of God.

Even to them. That believe on his name. We're thankful. For the clarification. Of the scriptures. Because sometimes. Until we. Hear. Though. That defining phrase. Even to them. That believe on his name.

We realize. That salvation. Is by faith. We're thankful. For the precious. Blood of Christ. That he shed at Calvary. Two thousand years ago. And we're looking. For that. Fulfilling of the promise. I will come again.

We will continue. To remember. The Lord Jesus Christ. In the breaking of the bread. And the drinking of the cup. Until he come. We give you thanks. Lord Jesus. We thank you. Heavenly Father. For this opportunity.
