He's an open-air preacher and a recruiter and trainer of other evangelists across the western United States. Today he's going to be addressing The Mormons, a Mission Field Ready for Harvest, Gospel Opportunities in Provo, Utah.

That's my honor and privilege to welcome you back—I'm sorry, to welcome you for the very first time to Orion Trip and Zion Radio, Joe Henson. Thank you, Chris. I'm happy to be here. And tell us about Sports Fan Outreach International.

Sports Fan Outreach International and Its Evangelistic Mission

I remember years ago at a G3 conference meeting some folks from that ministry who were manning an exhibitor's booth, and we made a connection, and I was hoping to get someone from that ministry on my show for some reason.

I can't remember if it's on my end or theirs, but nothing materialized. But then, by God's providence, you contacted me, and the rest is history. So tell us about Sports Fan Outreach International.

Yeah, we call it SFOY for short, and it was founded by Bill Adams, and he currently lives in the Tennessee area. That's where the ministry is headquartered. And it was originally founded, as you might guess, as a major evangelistic outreach to major sporting events.

And so he started out going to football games. He was in the Atlanta area, so I believe he started with the Falcons, and then he kind of branched out to college games, and more and more men started taking an interest in what he was doing.

He was seeing it as a strategic opportunity to herald the gospel to many, many tens of thousands of people all at one time. And since then, we branched out to not just hosting outreaches to major sporting events, which we still do.

Our biggest event is the Super Bowl, which I'd love to talk about at some point. But we also are seeking to raise up men to go full-time in the areas where God has them. And so we want to see basically every major city in North America have a full-time evangelist that would be committed to going to the downtown areas, the college campuses, and major gathering points like concerts and festivals to go and herald the glorious gospel.

Praise God. Now, tell us about what the George Whitfield Program is.

Open-Air Preaching and the George Whitfield Program

Yes, the George Whitfield Program. I guess that's the department that we are trying to raise up guys to come into, to go full-time. And it's named for the famed evangelist George Whitfield, who had a meteoric open-air ministry in the middle 1700s.

This was using only his voice. There was no mechanical amplification of any kind at the time. And he would go and preach to 30 ,000, 50 ,000 people at a time. And people's testimonies have been shared where people a mile away heard the gospel and were saved.

And that's some of the accounts that we have. And so we want to follow into that tradition and be open-air preachers in that regard.

Well, I'd like to plug an interview that I participated in on Iron Sherpa and Zion Radio on May 14th of this year. I interviewed Jonathan Blair, who portrayed George Whitfield in the movie A Great Awakening.

And I also had Joshua Enk on the program, who was the producer of this film. And co-hosting with me that day was an author of a biography on George Whitfield, Kurt M. Smith. And Kurt proved to be an extremely valuable co-host for that broadcast.

That would include any kind of religious atmosphere in which they were raised, if any, and the kinds of providential circumstances our Sovereign Lord rose up in their lives that drew them to himself and saved them.

So we would love to hear your story.

Joe Henson's Salvation Testimony

Excellent. Yeah, I'd love to share it. So for the first 10, 11 years of my life, I grew up largely a Catholic. My dad was in the Navy, and he was gone for six to eight months out of the year for the first 10, 11 years of my life going on Navy cruises.

And so my mom, who is Filipino, she raised us in the faith that she grew up in, which the Philippines is largely a Catholic state. I mean, there's been a growing evangelical movement there in recent decades.

But since it was a Spanish colony, it was established as a Catholic state. So that's really the strongest religion there. And so that's my first exposure to any form of religious observance. And then my dad, he decided after going through a situation of his own that he needed to take spiritual control back from mom.

He's feeling a conviction over that. And so he started taking us to the church that he grew up in, which was the Baptist church. And so from about the age of 11 or 12 until today, I've been attending Protestant Baptist churches.

And at about the age of 18, I made a false profession of faith. I was a couple of weeks away from graduating high school, and I thought, you know, I may as well get this out of the way. My understanding in my unconverted brain was, you know, it's—salvation is just a matter of— it's like a swearing-in ceremony.

And so I went forward after the traditional altar call that our church had and the evening service that night. And now I don't wish to—the pastor who was leading the prayer, you know, he had the best of intentions, and so I'm not trying to disparage him.

But he said, now follow me. And he said, dear Lord, I said, dear Lord, I can't tell you one word that I said after that because it meant so little to me. And the well-meaning pastor, he said, now don't let anyone take this away from you because tonight you prayed the prayer.

That's how you know. You know because you prayed the prayer, and God has to accept that prayer. And so I left the church that night. Every bit of loss is when I walked in. But now I had this confusion in my mind, thinking that I was good to go.

And that, you know, I signed the card. My ticket was punch. And so I graduated high school and finished college. And it was a two-year school that I was attending. And then in short order, I married my high school sweetheart of 29 years now, by God's grace.

And so we moved from where we were in Waco, Texas, to Dallas. And pretty much the first thing to go was any kind of spiritual observance. We just left that all behind. Didn't really have time for it. And that was basically the first five years of our marriage when we were just basically living for ourselves and just living for the fun of it, according to our own understanding.

And then we found out we were having our first child, our oldest son. We have two boys, by the way. And so our oldest son was on the way. And we thought, well, we got to teach the kid right from wrong.

And we may as well start going back to church. That's what we learned right from wrong, right? So we started attending a church in our area, which was the North Dallas area at this point. And we went faithfully.

And at one point, I even signed up on the list to get baptized, thinking, well, I put this off long enough. May as well get this out of the way. But the thing about it is, if you were to take away that momentary dunking in water and take away the showing up on Sundays and smiling and looking the part and look at the rest of my life, it's clear I was not a Christian.

I was living for myself. I was just going through the motions on Sunday. And then Monday morning, it was all about me. It was all about just feeding the desires of the flesh in every which way, and always keeping up appearances.

It was my secret sin that was enslaving me at that point. And all that came to a head when I was returning to the office from lunch. Before I was a full-time evangelist, I was a graphic designer. And I was heading back to the office where I was working at.

And I was just flipping radio stations kind of randomly and landed on this one radio station where this one guy was talking to another guy about the gospel. And I said, well, this is interesting. Let me listen in.

And the one guy was just unpacking. Here's what Jesus did, and here's why we need him, and asking questions so the guy would start to compare his own life to how God was going to see him. And for some reason, my attention was just arrested.

I had to hear more. So I went back in and found it. This was in the early days of streaming, but I found where it was being streamed. I was listening by the radio station. I started listening to it and found that this was the early days of podcasts.

This was somewhere about 2006 or so. And I started listening to the podcast regularly. And the host, he would have on regularly, he would have on people to share their testimonies. And he would have on little snippets of different preachers' sermons.

Guys like John MacArthur and John Piper and Voddie Baucom and Paul Washer. These little snippets and he would preface it. Now listen to how this is so threaded in the word, how it's so rooted in what the Bible is saying.

He's not getting opinion here. And if that's the case, we have to listen more closely. And I started listening more closely. And what the show was, it was Todd Friel when he was still with Way of the Master.

It was Way of the Master Radio. And so I found out about Ray. I found out about Hell's Best Kept Secret, True and False Conversion. I started listening to those back to back. Number one, I came to understand the gospel.

And number two, I came to realize I don't have a genuine saving testimony. And there was this moment in my cubicle back at the office where I was weighing all these things. And I realized, so if I don't have a testimony because I don't, I'm not living a new life at Christ.

I'm basically living an extension of the life that I've been living up to this point. There's been no real actual new life. And so I'm still, if that's the case, I'm still guilty in my sin. I'm still guilty in my sin that I still deserve hell and God would be right to send me there.

And in that moment, it was like in my mind, I was envisioning all of my sins that were mine, that I went to for comfort, that I went to when I just needed to blow off steam. And they were just swirling around me in my mind.

And in that moment, I became ashamed of all of it. And I wanted to crawl under my desk and hide. And I was so ashamed. And it was in the middle of that when just like the cross just slammed into all of it.

And I said, wait a minute, that's why Jesus came. Jesus came to save sinners. He came to save me from my sin. I'm a sinner. I need to trust in him. And I grabbed hold of the cross and I haven't been the same since.

Hallelujah. Yeah.

I was just about to ask you, how did you know that the Lord had placed upon your heart and life the call into ministry and specifically to sports outreach, sports fans outreach? Yes. Yes. Yeah, absolutely.

Discerning a Call to Evangelism and Ministry

So within a few years of that, you know, the Lord is growing me and changing me and challenging me. And, you know, within, well, let me back up just a little bit. Within a few months of that, I went home that night thinking like something different had happened.

And I was going to talk to my wife and I said, hey, I think we have a problem. She was thinking, what, did you lose your job or something? Yeah. And so I said, no, I don't, I don't think we're Christians.

I was still thinking in the present tense. I don't think we're Christians. I don't think we're saved. And she's like, what are you talking about? That's the, that was the last thing she thought I was going to say.

And she remembered a little snippet of a verse. She looked up in her concordance and then she, hey, this says, if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised us from the dead, we will be saved.

Didn't, didn't we do that? And I said, well, how do we know that we believe with our hearts? She said, well, I don't know. And so within a few months of that, you know, we were having this ongoing, just a, just a conversation, a general conversation.

I wasn't beating her head over with the Bible. I was just saying, how are you doing with that? What are you thinking about these things? And he came to true genuine faith and within a few months of that, and then within a few years of that, we started trying to discern some kind of a full time ministry call for myself.

You know, just because I felt just a burden that the Lord had more for me to do. And I really enjoyed those moments where I was able to volunteer and serve in the church in some way. And so we started praying about that.

What was that going to look like? Because, you know, I was still working full time. I couldn't think about how to, how to make a seminary work. And so as we were praying and asking God to open a way forward for us to step through, I found out about a church in our area that offers a training.

It's a course that they offer through their admissions department. They actually go set up schools throughout, around the world. And the idea is that they want to set up instead because they were a church that had a lot of means and they could bring in indigenous pastors into the states and put them and pay their way and put them through seminary.

But they found out when they would do that, they would get a taste of this American life. And they were like, man, I'm staying. God's called me here. We're like, no, we need you to build a church up over in Uganda or Zimbabwe or, you know, Nepal.

We need you to build a church there. That's what we brought you here to do. And so they realized they need to keep them there. And so they set up these schools to give a seminary level education to indigenous pastors on site and around the world.

And they offer the same training locally through their church. And so I applied and got in. And while I was getting the training and equipping, I was also just praying, Lord, how do you want me to use this?

How are we going to serve? What is what is going to be our role in the kingdom, at least for now? And in that season, as I was going through the training, that's when LDS at the time was still called the Mormons.

Mormon missionaries started finding me. I started finding them and I would see them in droves. I would see like half a dozen and walk down the street or that or, you know, walk into a restaurant. Well, me and my wife were on a quick lunch break and I said, you know, I'm gonna go talk to them.

My dad, he warned me off them just enough to know that they're not they're not Christians. And they and therefore they they they need they need to know the true gospel. And so with just that little understanding, I just stepped out and started talking to them and I started studying.

Well, how do I so I'm going to trust my dad was lying to me. They believe something different. So I actually started studying into it, looking into it. And, yeah, they believe things that no Christian has ever believed in 2000 years.

And and so they need to hear the truth. They need to hear the truth of Jesus. And so I started trying to study up ways to communicate that to them in a way that they would say, yeah, that's that's not what we're taught.

And that's different. And I see how you're getting there. And in that process of just meeting with them and studying, I just kind of got a broken heart for them. And I wanted to want to find a way to to to regularly be a part of trying to show the true seed of the true gospel into into the Mormon people as often as I could.

And that's what eventually led us to Utah. Now, how as to how I got on staff with SFOI. You know, it's an interesting, quicker story. The one of my one of my current pastors, which I believe he's been a guest on on your program, Chris, his brother, Dr. Ed Romine.

Oh, yeah. I didn't know that he was one of your pastors.

Oh, yes. Yeah. He's one of the pastors of First Baptist Church of Provo. And before he was a pastor, long before he was a pastor, he gives me a call. Like I said, I'd already finished that training program about 2012 or so.

And I was trying to make plans to figure out how I'm going to get to Utah. And my wife is already on board with us at some point moving to Utah full time and being in ministry in some way. We're just trying to figure out the other end of that.

And so and we were also in the process of adoption where we were seeking to adopt our younger son. And that that took a few seasons. And in that in that time around 2014, that's when my brother, Ed, he's still in seminary in Texas.

He gives me a call, says, hey, Joe, we're going to be on the Denton Square doing some evangelism. We're going to be doing some preaching. When can you be there? He just he didn't give me it out. He just wanted to know when.

You don't you're going. I just need to know when it's going to be 15 minutes, 20 minutes. When can you be there? So I said, Ed, I guess I'll be there in about 15 minutes. And I went that first Saturday night and I was basically just kind of passing out tracts and watching it praying.

And some of the brothers were preaching and they came back in the next Saturday. And I said, hey, can I give it give it a shot? And and they were. Yeah, they're very encouraging. And I had scribbled down what I thought was about 15 minutes worth of notes.

And they got me all wired up with the microphone on my head. Like I had set microphone on and put me on the on the block. And I stood up and I I started started my sermon. And I'm pretty sure I vomited out all my notes.

Three and a half minutes. Yeah. And and, you know, so I wrapped up. I hope you don't mean that literally. Verbally. Yeah, no, it was I just probably just ripped through through all of them. And and they were all very encouraging.

And that's how the journey started. And it's it's been a joy ever since. I've been to every Super Bowl, but one since the 2015. Wow. The one. Yeah, the one I missed was in Minneapolis, Minneapolis. And that's just right before us.

It's a family reason.

Do you mean actually in the at the game or in the parking lot?

I wish we were actually up against the parking lot.

So immediately I was wondering how you could afford that. But anyway.

Oh, no. Yeah, I wish I could. Yeah, I wish I could. Now, if someone was to say, hey, here's my seat, you can have it. I'll go in. But I don't have the twenty five hundred dollars for a nosebleed seat at the Super Bowl.

Yeah. Yeah. But. But we do. So a typical Super Bowl, that's our biggest outreach event every year. It brings the most most people we've had anywhere from 80 to 120 evangelists come from all over the country to converge on a on a Super Bowl city.

And we'll get there usually on about a Thursday. And then there's three days of outreach where we're hitting the downtown areas, going to all the the NFL gathering spots and being mindful and respectful of law enforcement.

We're not there to protest. We're there to preach. And so we want to always be mindful and respectful to our law enforcement so that we are not prohibited from doing the thing we came there to do, to love people with the truth of Christ, to proclaiming it in the open air.

And so, yeah, we will. We will. The first few days will be in the downtown areas because the NFL sets up lots of like what's called the NFL experience or NFL City, things like that. And so we'll be just outside those areas or this year in Los Angeles.

One of the one of the areas that we're going to be ministering in is the Santa Monica Pier. And so all the touristy spots that bring lots of people that are very thoroughly established as public thoroughfares.

That's where we try to minister at. Yeah.

And well, we're going to go to our first commercial break. And then when we come back, we're not only going to be hearing more about your experiences evangelizing those that are gathered to the Super Bowl every year, but also we got to find out more about Mormonism and your efforts to reach Mormons for Christ.

Welcome back, if you just tuned us in. Our guest today for the entire program is Joe Henson, who is a full-time evangelist with Sports Fan Outreach International, and specifically with a wing of that ministry, the George Whitefield Program.

And today we are going to be primarily addressing our main theme, which is the Mormons, a mission field ready for harvest, gospel opportunities in Provo, Utah. But before we get to that, I just wanted to have you comment on something that is probably on the minds of many after hearing that one of the primary outreaches that Sports Fan Outreach International conducts is your annual visits to the Super Bowl.

And I was just curious, I know that it's probably not always the same, but what has been the reaction from people in the parking lot and so forth during the tailgate party? And does anybody ever get hostile with you?

Do you ever get things thrown at you or what have you?

Yeah, we see all manner of reaction. You know, it was true in Paul's day on Mars Hill that some mocked, some wanted to hear more, and some it was the power of God and salvation. It's true in our day still.

You know, I've had Bibles slapped out of my hands, I've had water bottles thrown our way. I've had an egg thrown from a balcony window, and thankfully their aim wasn't very good. But yeah, we've seen all kinds.

And, you know, I guess one of the things that really started to solidify, like, I want to be in full-time ministry, but I want to be an evangelist. My second Super Bowl, it was in 2016 in San Francisco, and we were set up on some downtown street.

And so the street was to my back, and I was standing on the curb, and all these businesses were in front of me on the other side of the sidewalk. And I was basically just giving the full, unvarnished, biblical gospel, you know, a lot of the praise to the humble, and seeking to plead that people come to the senses, come to Christ.

And I knew that my message was basically reverberating along the inside of this Subway restaurant. And I look up, and I realize everyone was staring at me, and some of them had already finished their meals.

And, you know, I'm seeking to—I'm not compromising anything, and I'm not preaching just a squishy gospel. I'm trying to give the full truth, like, yes, only grace can save us, but because it's because we're guilty sinners, and here's how it plays out.

And I'm trying to get that message across. And at some point, I noticed this young man, he finished his food, and he walked out, and he was leaning against the wall right next to the door, just listening in.

And one of the things that we're trained to do is—because we go out as, like, multi—like, 10-man teams. And when one guy's preaching, and they notice someone else kind of leaning in and listening, we want to go and engage that person and try to have a deeper conversation, maybe answer some of their objections and point them more directly to the gospel, to Christ.

So they started talking to this young man while I was finishing my sermon. And they came out, and they said, man, Joe, this kid, like, he grew up in church back in Arkansas. And he said that he had never heard the gospel explained that way until that moment right then.

And it was just an awesome moment. And they started pouring in scriptures into him and discipling him and trying to encourage him to keep going and to grow in his understanding. So, yeah.

So you have seen fruit from the outreach there. Yeah.

We don't always see it, but it's certainly enough to keep us encouraged and to keep us moving forward and to keep trusting that, yes, indeed, the Lord does save his people. Faith comes by hearing the words about Christ.

Mormonism's Claims About Continuing Revelation and the Restoration

Okay. Well, now we should probably move on to our main theme, the Mormons' mission field ready for harvest, gospel opportunities in Provo, Utah. First of all, I know that there still may be a lot of evangelical Christians who are very ignorant about the Mormons.

And our goal today is not to focus on every doctrinal aberration of the Mormons. But if you could give us an overview of the most striking heresies that separate them from truly biblical Christianity.

Yes.

So, the Mormons believe in continuing revelation. They don't believe that the canon of scripture was closed because they have a line of prophets that go all the way back to Joseph Smith. And who is, as they're taught, was teaching the restored gospel that had fallen away.

You see, he was reading in James, it said, So, Joseph Smith, as a young man, he goes and he takes the Bible out of its word and he prays. This is the claim, anyway. He prays and an angel comes to him and tells him not to join any of the churches.
