The Bronze Laver: Christ Our Sanctifier

We're taking a small break. Of course, it's communion service, and I also would like to just pass to you something

I Believe is a Top priority in my personal walk with the

Lord is my personal holiness My personal sanctification and how the

Lord is Working on me, and he's still working on me, and I I Would assume that that's true with you as well

And as you well know Sanctification is very real and it's a very real fight.

I Just like to encourage you before we take communion, but not only that in our personal daily walk with the

Lord to bring to you Something that would be encouraging

From the scriptures on sanctification these few verses we're going to look at this morning is

Actually speaks about The doctrine of sanctification

But keep in mind that Jesus Christ is our sanctifier He is our sanctification

Paul says that So we look to him as our cleanser

But he's the living word But the cleansing agent comes also from the

Holy Spirit It comes also from the written word Which is the means of?

grace to us Given to us through his word. We have his word so On this

Lord's Day, August 31st 2025 I would like to speak to you about The laver of bronze the laver of bronze

Or you could say laver of brass the King James. I Said I believe it says brass and the

King James the old King James translation It's a basin it's a base in the brass or brace in a bronze it's the same thing as This picture detects it of what the priest

Would go to for cleansing So and saying that please turn with me to your in your

Bibles in the Old Testament to the book of Exodus wonderful book

Exodus Chapter 30 Beginning with verse 17 to verse 21 and before you get to the bronze laver

For the Keith and I were talking about this before worship

You go to the the altar That it's a picture it's a type of our justification in Jesus Christ the sacrifice of the

Son of God the Son of Man who gave him his life for us an offering unto the

Lord his father Now we come to say Sanctification there's first there's justification then there's sanctification you see all this in here, but there's much to be said

This is not exhaustive. I want to try to pull in what I can within 45 minutes before we have communion, so I'm going to pray for me, okay

So let's hear the Word of God verse 17 to verse 21 and Exodus 30 scripture

Records this Moses the Prophet wrote this down Then the

Lord spoke to Moses saying verse 17 you shall also make a laver of bronze

With its base also of bronze for washing you shall put it between the tabernacle of meeting and the altar and you shall put water in it and Aaron and his son shall wash their hands and their feet in water from it when they go into the tabernacle of meeting or when they near the altar

When they come near the altar To minister to burn an offering made by fire to the

Lord. They shall wash with water lest they die so they shall wash their hands and Their feet lest they die

It's repeated again. It's how serious it is and it shall be a statute forever to them and To him and his descendants throughout their generations

May God Bless the reading of his word from the hearing of our ears to our hearts

This Lord's Day morning as we bow in his presence Please bow with me as we seek our

Lord's face and favor within this hour of worship Our Father and our great

God we bow in your presence now before your word We thank you father for the

Lord Jesus Christ that unspeakable gift that you gave on Calvary's Hill his blood washes whiter than snow as We place our faith completely in him

But we also thank you father for your words as the Lord Jesus Christ says

The truth Thy word is truth sanctify them

With the truth So father we pray that the truth from your word this morning would sanctify us and cleanse us

Yes separate us consecrate us but wash us

We thank you for that. We pray also as David prayed Lord from Psalm 19 a man after your heart

Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins.

Let them not have dominion over me Then I shall be blameless

And I shall be innocent of great transgression So Lord let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight.

Oh Lord my strength my Redeemer We ask this for your honor and glory

We pray this in the majestic wonderful glorious Holy Name of the

Lord Jesus Christ Amen You ever wonder why?

We must bathe without the simple answer of smelling awful

But there's a purpose we all bathe this morning Simple answer would be to is to wash to be clean from our dirtiness from dirt and smell

Pollution that soils our garments and yet the people of Exodus here cleanliness meant more than just washing with water even though water was so important as being the

The h2o the element in which they used The washing was primarily the purpose the primary purpose to be clean

It was a ceremonial cleaning and there was a this had to be done for the priest the instructions that was given

Now in a matter of fact the washing of the hands and the feet were mandatory

Before engaging in priestly duties and the seriousness of being ceremonially purified is seen in the warning of death in this washing

That was would be that would be neglected that death would come about very serious

Nothing casual here nothing casual Nothing casual was being done in the sanctuary.

It was all very serious Because God is a holy God and when we come before him in worship, we are to Come before him consecrated separated to be washed

Even everything that was done in the sanctuary or out in the courtyard was very serious washing with the bronze labor and basin meant to be a picture of our spiritual readiness and Purity Before God Jesus even said blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see

God You see this all the way through scripture that God separates us calls us unto holiness

Follow peace with all men and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord the scripture says

First of all, what do we see here? There's it's about being clean, but it's about also a holy purpose in a holy calling

Concentrate consecration being cleansed is First and foremost second.

It's been it's it's about what we do after we bathe its service You see the hands and the feet must be washed so What is it that God's people are being told to be as they prepare to be clean

At level one, we know that the Israelites were being made clean to commune with God There's a purity in that the washing

God himself readies his people for service. I believe that's an important part as well

The Lord himself gives us the instructions Here in the text before us in Exodus chapter 30 verse 17 to 21 and they are detailed

Keep in mind also that the tabernacle speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ the word Who became flesh tabernacled?

Among us he dwelt among us John 1 14 and As scripture says these are types and shadows as which

Hebrews speaks of the book of Hebrews of Jesus Christ It could be also used as picturing

God's way of salvation and the subsequent life and ministry of the believer

Makes me think of Revelation chapter 1 verse 5 and 6, which is a great verse to start off with here in the introduction the

Apostle John wrote this down by the Spirit when he was in the Spirit in the Lord's day and he said this and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness the firstborn from the dead and The ruler over kings of the earth to him who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood has made us kings and priests to his

God and Father to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen Great verse of Scripture.

He has made us It's Kings and priests he's washed us in his own blood

That's how we are made kings and priests to God is God and father because Christ has washed us in his precious blood

That's without that The rest of this really doesn't apply

Because it's to the sons of the Living God. So although this picture is the way of salvation.

It was given to a people Who were already in covenant relationship with God at that time period

Rather than providing a way of salvation the tabernacle offered the means by which the people

God could clean be cleansed from outward ritual defilement and thus be able to approach

God in worship Again to be made clean and to wash and to ready themselves for service

Consecration to be clean how We could approach

God In worship and be ready to do service

Before God and men and it wonderful that the Lord Jesus Christ has cleansed us So we are capable of doing this we were able to do this that's the greatest qualification is being washed in the blood of Jesus Christ and and Being made children of the

Living God in Regeneration now Matthew Henry says this concerning Exodus 30 17 through 21.

He says this quote law the law was to teach us Who are daily to attend upon God Daily to renew our repentance for sin and our believing application of the blood of Christ to our soul for remission for in many things we daily offend and Contract pollution in quote.

I love the way he emphasizes several times there daily daily daily

Therefore we need daily cleansing. We need daily washings daily repentance so first of all

We observe here. My first point would be the washing the washing clean the priest as They approach a holy

God and minister the washing the washing Specifically it was for priest

But as I mentioned in Revelation Jesus has made us kings and priests unto him now it was basically in that time period speaking of those who

Minister and you could say it it applies to the ministers Of the gospel, but in a sense, we're all ministers of the gospel

I know there's a capital M and there's a small M but in that sense Jesus Christ has made us ministers priest unto him

Verse 17 and 18 then the Lord spoke to Moses saying you shall also Make a labor or basin

Basin of bronze For washing you shall put it

Between the tabernacle of meeting and the altar and you shall put water in it. God himself directs

Moses to instruct Israel about the bronze labor The bronze so first of all, we have the bronze basin the labor was made of bronze and They made that from the brass the bronze from the women that Actually would look at themselves as a mirror

Doesn't scripture say that God's Word is like a mirror This is the way we can examine ourselves.

We look into God's Word and God's Word reads us We must examine ourselves to see whether we're in the faith

We must examine because we cannot detect the sin and the dirt on ourselves Like we should the

Word of God does through the Spirit So first of all, you have the bronze

Basin that was made of bronze second. You could it could hold water.

It was specifically for water and washing Third it is placed in the middle of the outer court between the bronze altar and the tent of the meeting

Fourth its water is to be used by the priest For the washing of their hands and feet while they serve in the tabernacle

So God specifically laid down these instructions To Moses and Moses passes it on How they are to approach

God and what they are instructed to do instruction and righteousness So we don't know whether the labor the basin was tall or short we don't know exactly the height of it whether it had any handles or How much water it held we don't have those details there, but we do know this that it was placed

It was made of bronze it was placed on the bronze stand Which means that it was not

Placed on the floor because it was separate from that It was not to be soiled from that so the base in the labor and use does not come into contact with the ground and only the object that it comes into cut the only object it comes in contact with is

The ground is also Bronze, so basically the labor itself does not touch the ground

When you walked into the tabernacle you would see the altar then the priest ministering at the bronze basin

Then the holy place God also tells us why it's placed there verse 19 and 20 he tells us the reason there for Aaron and his sons

Specifically so the first stop of the priestly duty must be to The labor the basin and The reason for this great need is for priestly clean cleansing there had to be cleansing and all service in the tabernacle whether in the holy place whether in the holy of holies or At the brazen altar was required the one serving

Was absolutely mandatory to wash at the labor No questions about it

So we can safely say that it was Probably used more frequently.

I Would think than any other article or furniture in that tabernacle. It was used quite often there was a lot of washing going on and They had to be cleansed

Now this cleansing even though it's ceremonial outward Applies something of great depth spiritually speaking

This cleansing applies primarily to the child of God as I said earlier the believer in Christ For only the priests could serve at the labor

Beyond the brazen altar that application of the teaching of the tabernacle was directly to the sons of the

Living God J. Bernard McGee and his commentary said this

I know he's fundamental. I know he's Armenian but I tell you

J. Bernard McGee was a great Bible teacher and he said something very good here. Listen very closely He said this there is a twofold application of the meaning of the labor in the ministry and cleansing

This being an earthly and a heavenly application He goes on to say it applies first of all

To Christ is present resurrection ministry He continues

Cleansing his own until he presents him faultless blameless before the presence of his glory his throne with the seeding joy

Jew 24 This is the heavenly ministry of Christ and cleansing the second second application the secondly he says and It applies to the one phase of work of the

Holy Spirit in his present ministry on earth the written word the audible voice of the

Spirit Reveals the pathway of light for God's children that they will keep them from defilement along the way that they will keep them from defilement along the way and it also reveals new avenues of service and The Holy Spirit confirms and makes real in the life of the ministry of the written

Word of God These are not separate operations, but one for the indwelling

Spirit does not direct apart from from or contrary to the word

This is the earthly application of the meaning of the labor in quote

I thought that was an excellent quote to help us get understanding of what is being said in application here.

So Trying to give application as I go about But we look at other word scriptures to help us here to throw light on what?

God is meaning here So the main function of the basin or the labor of bronze was for cleansing

Now if you look at Psalm 24 If you go with me to the book of Psalms as many many scriptures there

I Only chose just a little bit Just a few for us

Go with me to Psalm 24 chapter 24. Look at verse 3 and 4

Psalm 24 verse 3 and 4 gives us light on this wonderful subject we have before us today

The it begins with the question in verse 3 who may ascend Until Unto the hill of the

Lord who may ascend unto The hill of the Lord or who may stand in his holy place

Who may ascend to God's hill? Who may who may stand in his holy place?

This great God who made the universe that said even the stars are not pure in his sight

Wow So holy

To look upon him would mean death But see he begins with the question there.

The psalmist begins with the question. That's David and He gives the answer in verse 4. He gives us answer directly he who has clean hands and a pure heart

Clean hands and a pure heart who has not lifted up his soul to an idol nor sworn deceitfully

He shall receive blessings from the Lord and Righteousness notice that righteousness from the

God of his salvation Jesus Christ becomes our righteousness Since he is our sanctification our righteousness.

He is our all -in -all. So all that comes from Christ His person his works

Wonderful verse there beloved. That's what David is talking about is the basic integrity of inward motive and Outward manner first, it's inward then it's outward.

It's not the other way around as so many people have it. It's not Reformation first, but it's regeneration

Regeneration God does the work in us then he does the work through us

First it begins inward motive then it goes outward manner There's another connection

Psalm 26 verse 6 David said this I will wash my hands in innocence Notice David says this quite often

I Will wash my hands in innocence so I will go about your altar.

Oh Lord That's how he could go before God. He must have a washing he knew this

Even before Christ came he knew the stand and go before God Almighty there needs to be purity and Doesn't that cry in your conscience and scream in your conscience

Lord cleanse me wash me and Christ has done it He's done it through the all -sufficient death that he did him that he paid on Calvary's cross

David said oh, I love that. I will wash my hands. He was determined.

I Will go about your altar Verse 7 that I may proclaim the voice with the voice of Thanksgiving and tell

Of all your wonders works first there must be the cleansing Makes me think also a

Psalm 50 51 isn't this a Great reference that whole chapter is absolutely

Incredible. It's the psalm of pentance After David sinned

With Bathsheba Not one word of Bathsheba is mentioned not one word

It's his sin. It's his sin and he cries out for mercy

He says Oh God have mercy upon me have compassion upon me According to your loving kindness according to the multitude of your tender mercies

God has Loaded up thousands of multitudes tender mercies tender.

They're tender Blot out my transgressions wash me thoroughly from my iniquity cleanse me from my sin hear that language and Then he says we come about being confessional.

This is where we get it from right here folks for I Acknowledge my transgressions. He confessed his sin

He didn't hold it back And he forsook it

And he said my sin is always before me you feel that sometimes I mean we have been cleansed.

We've been washed We've been sanctified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, but that remaining sin that stitch is still upon us

Romans 7 And then he says in verse 4 against you and you only have

I sinned and done this evil in your sight that I may be Found just when you speak in blameless when you judge

You Notice his focus is primarily on God and God alone his sin and his

God He did business with God Notice what he says in verse 7 purge me with his it and I shall be clean wash me and I shall be whiter than snow and He knew the order here that must be that cleansing process must come first before there's joy

Then he says make me hear joy and gladness That the bones of my that you have broken that God has broken may rejoice

Hide your face from my sin blot out all my iniquities and then he cries that wonderful prayer and song

Here created me a clean heart. Oh God Renew a set steadfast spirit within me

Do not cast me away from your presence and do not take your Holy Spirit for me I really believe verse 11 is a it's something that he actually saw in the life of King Saul He witnessed this in King Saul that that King Saul Strayed and the

Spirit of God came went about went away from him left him And he cries out

Restore to me the joy of your salvation. It's God's salvation, isn't it? For salvation is of the

Lord Restore God is in the restoring business folks to restore the joy of our salvation

But first we must be broken. We must be contrite We must humble ourselves before God and ask him to cleanse us and wash us but we must see our sin as David saw it

He says and uphold me by your generous spirit. And then he says in verse 13, then I will teach transgressors your ways and sinners

Shall be converted to you You see the order there verse 17 the sacrifices of God of our broken of our broken spirit and a broken and in a

Contrite heart these Oh God you will not despise God does not despise that well

Much there much there in that whole wonderful chapter Then you go to Psalm 119 verse 9.

The question is given again. How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to thy word taking heed

You do business with God you get serious with God and you obey

God Verse 10 and with my whole heart I have sought you.

Have you sought God with your whole heart? That's how you do business with God. Oh Oh He says oh, that's a that's that's a word of worship.

Oh, let me not wander from your commandments verse 11

Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against God.

I Love that verse, don't you? Hold that hide that treasure that in your heart beloved hide the

Word of God Meditate the Word of God saturate yourself with the Word of God if you want to be clean

God doesn't want just scripture in a box before our four foreheads and Even tattooed on our skin has so many people doing nowadays

You know where God wants us to have hide his word in our hearts in our hearts

Treasure it hide it in your heart that we will not sin against God and the purpose is to guide our minds to guide our hearts to guide our hands and Feet and our actions and our manner of conduct before a holy

God take time to be holy Speak off with that God and that's where it is is in the secret place of the most high

Locking yourself up with God. That's what matters in The secret place a life that would please be pleasing acceptable to God is

Presenting your bodies as a living sacrifice unto him This is what

God is concerned about folks for you and me have you treasured

God's Word in your heart Are you taking time to be holy? The things that God is concerned about As Jesus said seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these other things to be added unto you

He's talking about things like just your necessities your food your clothing But he said first seek him seek him and his righteousness seek him pure heart

Pure hands blessed all the pure in heart for they shall see God Outward religion will not go with God Matter of fact

God hates it Let me read something to you from Isaiah chapter 1 You're familiar with this aren't you?

It's powerful words But this great encouragement here to folks.

God does not hold anything back for our good and It's for our good and that's how loving he is and how holy is but he's concerned

Let me begin reading a chapter 1 notice what he says and in verse Let me verse 9

Look at the encouragement here unless the Lord of hosts had left us to a very small left us a very small remnant

We would have been like Sodom and would have been made like Gomorrah. Thank God for a remnant

God always has a remnant and then Isaiah says hear the word of the

Lord you rulers of Sodom and give ear to the law of our God you people of Gomorrah To what purpose is your multitude?

of your sacrifices to me now Right there. Let me stop right there. You know, this is to people that's playing church.

This is people that are playing religion, this is people that are all outward performance a

Form of godliness and they deny the power thereof and right here He says for what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me?

He's talking about worship It says the Lord I've had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of the

Fed cattle I do not delight in the blood of bulls or the lambs or goats. This is

God speaking through the prophet Notice what he says when you come to appear before me

Who has required this from your hand to trample my courts? Wow Bring no more futile sacrifices incenses and abomination to me

Your new moons the Sabbaths the calling of the similes. I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting

Sin must be dealt with You see your new moons.

He goes on and your appointed feast. God says my soul hates they are trouble to me

I am weary of burying them and then he says this when you spread out your hands

Your hands I Will hide my eyes from you Even though you make many prayers

I Will not hear Your hands are full of blood

God gives the remedy verse 16 wash There it is wash wash yourselves

Like the priest go goes before the labor wash yourselves make yourselves clean

Put away the evil of your doings before my eyes. That's taught my repentance folks Cease to do evil learn to do good seek justice rebuke the oppressor

Defend the fatherless plead for the widow. Didn't James say that's pure religion and undefiled and staying unspotted from the world

Right here. Then the invitations given verse 18 come now

God is always saying come now Not tomorrow Don't put it off Yesterday's gone come now

Let us reason together says the Lord Though your sins are like scarlet

They shall be white as snow though They'd be red like crimson they shall be as wool if you are willing and obedient You shall eat the good of the land, but if you refuse and rebel you shall be defired by the sword

For the mouth of the Lord has spoken Notice God holds nothing back but all for our good

But if we disobey and unwilling we're in serious trouble folks The sword

I don't want the sword to devour me. How about you? God make give it all

How much desire I like what Tozer said? Let me let me squeeze this in here. Tozer says you are as holy as you want to be

How much desire do you have within you to be holy? Is that an all -consuming desire is

To be consecrated to be separated to be cleansed To be different from this world

To stand out as salt and be salt and be light to show and demonstrate in your life good works the good works that follow the fruit of a child of God to glorify

Our God in heaven. I don't know about you that that that's what I want an all -consuming desire to love

God to love God for who he is and and go before him and where it's just not a duty but a delight to go into his presence and come before him and say

Lord cleanse me wash me But I want to love you That should be our desire

So Exodus 30 17 through 19 was all about washing for the work of God Proverbs picks up the idea of washing for cleanliness and takes it as a metaphor for moral and spiritual health listen to Proverbs 30 verse 12

There are those who are clean in their own eyes Wow How many people you know like that search your own heart ask

God to search your own heart this morning Are you clean in your own eyes, but are and then he says but are not washed of their filth

Wow Again, God gets right down to the nitty -gritty and right to the heart

How often have you been dirty And you don't know it how often you have a smudge or something on your face, and you don't know it

Someone has to point it out to you got that on you Our own opinion of ourselves beloved is often quite far from the truth isn't it and how deceitful our own hearts are many times

You know we can have sterilized hands, but wicked hearts God help us when

Jesus was challenged by the Pharisees over the issue of ceremonial washing outward cleansing Jesus lovingly powerfully rebukes them listen to Matthew chapter 15 as Jesus deals with these

Self -righteous Pharisees that thought they knew everything about God and think they thought they had all the answers and all they knew all the doctrines and all this and all about outward appearance, but Jesus corrects them in chapter 15

Jesus basically speaks here defilement comes from within not without It's within the heart

Then describes in the Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus saying why do your disciples transgress the traditions of the elders?

For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread Notice what they were concerned about he answered them and says why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

for God commanded Saying honor your father and your mother and he who curses his father and mother let him be put to death

Notice he goes to the commandment mainly the fifth

But you say whoever says to his father and mother what? Whatever profit you might

Have received from me as a gift to God Then he need not honor his father and mother thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect, but God by your tradition

This is Jesus speaking What does he call Hypocrites he say you play actors you hypocrites

Well, did Isaiah he quotes Isaiah prophesy about you These people draw near with me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their heart

Is far from me in vain They worship me in vain

Teaching his doctrines of the commandments of men and then he and it says in verse 10

And when he had called the multitude to himself, he said to them here and understand Not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man but what comes out of the mouth defiles a man

And then his disciples came to him said to him.

Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when you heard when they heard these things? Oh, yeah, he knew it

It offended him truth offends But he answered and said, you know,

Jesus always gave an answer. They didn't expect right. It's perfect wisdom in operation

Every plant my heavenly father has planted Every plant that my heavenly father has not planted will be uprooted

Let them along Listen what he says they are blind leaders of the blind and If the blind leads the blind both will fall into the ditch

Jesus had led him along You're not going to turn their hearts Then Peter answered and said to him explain this parable to us

And so Jesus said are you also still without understanding?

Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated a

Graphic Jesus is but those which those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart and they defile a man

Then he says it he gets very detailed He gets very specific to Peter and he says listen for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts murders adulteries fornications thefts false witness blasphemies

These are the things which defile a man but that to eat with Unwashed hands does not defile a man.

You see that Jesus is going right to the heart of the matter and it's the heart Aren't you glad he does and when we go to and deal with this and see it as it is

There's a remedy and that remedy beloved is the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ Hallelujah, what a

Savior So Jesus like Isaiah pointed to the root of the root of uncleanness not physical but spiritual

Not unwashed hands, but wicked hearts evil thoughts destructive words.

I don't know about you I say Lord cut the searchlight on my heart That I would not be like this that I would not have a form of godliness

That I would be the real deal before God in my secret places I am here in my home

Loving my wife loving my children Instructing them praying for them praying and being with God and saying

God cleanse me break me mold me in the end Make me and use me for your glory

Washing of hands and feet is a picture that points us to a deeper need for our cleansing of our guilt before God This is exactly what

Pilate Was attempting to do when he turned Jesus over to be crucified. Remember that in Matthew 27 24

He took and washed his hands before the crowd. What did he say? I am innocent of this man's blood see to it yourselves.

He passed the responsibility But he didn't want to search his own heart. He was responsible Even though in the providence and the sovereignty of God Jesus handed himself over He says no man takes my life from me, right?

But still man was responsible for the murder of Christ well, if there's

The washing clean of the priest to approach the Holy God and ministry Second there's a warning.

There's a warning approaching Unclean is certain death to look at verse 20 and 21 of Exodus 30

This is a powerful powerful word From Moses as the

Lord directed him In verse 20 when they go into the tabernacle meeting or when they come

Near the altar to minister to burn an offering made by fire to the Lord. They shall wash with water lest they die so they wash so they wash their hands and their feet lest they die and It shall be a statute forever to them to him and his descendants throughout their generations makes me think of many scriptures

There's so many in Jeremiah. I'd like to go to but time is clicking away But it makes me think about what happened in the

Acts chapter 5 with Ananias and Sapphira as they lied to the Holy Spirit of God You know the story, you know what happened

God struck them down dead You see and they were among the church

The church there's a lot of debate whether they were real believers or not, but I've heard some very good
