DAY 217: 2 Kings 22–23; 2 Chronicles 34–35
After generations of idolatry and rebellion, Judah experiences one of its greatest reformations under the young King Josiah. During repairs to the Temple, the Book of the Law is discovered, and when its words are read aloud, Josiah tears his clothes in repentance. He recognizes that Judah has violated God's covenant and stands beneath His righteous judgment. But Josiah does not stop at sorrow. He gathers the nation, publicly renews the covenant, destroys pagan altars, removes corrupt priests, and restores the Passover with extraordinary devotion. Yet a sobering tension remains. Josiah's repentance is genuine, but Judah's accumulated guilt has not disappeared. Judgment is delayed, but the nation's outward reforms cannot guarantee inward renewal. Even Josiah eventually falls in battle, demonstrating that Judah's hope cannot rest upon another imperfect son of David. These chapters remind us that recovering God's Word must lead to humility, repentance, and decisive obedience, not merely religious enthusiasm. Ultimately, Josiah points to Jesus Christ, the greater King who perfectly fulfills the Law, cleanses the true Temple, and becomes our Passover Lamb. Josiah can remove idols from the land, but Christ removes guilt from His people. Josiah can renew an old covenant, but Christ establishes the new covenant in His blood, granting forgiveness, new hearts, and the Holy Spirit. True and lasting reformation comes through the faithful Son of David.
