This week I want to talk about something vitally important. One of the hard cries of end abortion now is the conviction that abortion is an issue of national sin.

The Bible presents abortion as such a heinous sin that it calls down the judgment of God against the nation that commits it.

See, God doesn't only hold individuals accountable for the crime of murder, but sees the nation that condones and habitually commits this sin as guilty of the shedding of innocent blood, an act that causes

God to bring calamity to any nation that practices it. Biblically, we see God move in judgment against the shedding of innocent blood with Cain and Abel and all the way up until the flood, after which time

God institutes capital punishment to be executed by civil government for unjustly taking the life of another.

Exodus details the intimate protection of the unborn in God's law by giving an example of a pregnant woman who was unintentionally struck and miscarries as a result.

The offender in that case is put to death under God's law, demonstrating how much God values life, especially the life of the unborn child.

The act of child sacrifice is a practice of the pagan nations that God calls abominable in His word.

Leviticus 18 tells us that it's a sin that pollutes the land and causes it to vomit out its inhabitants in judgment.

God explicitly warrants His people not to engage in it, or He will judge His people just like He did with the pagan nations before them.

Now quickly, this demonstrates something very important. Israel, or the people of God, are not the only nation that God expects to obey

Him. By the many warnings and judgment that follows even on the pagans that don't know

God or have His law, God demonstrates that He is implicitly in covenant with all nations, and He expects them to obey

Him. Otherwise, why would He hold them accountable for their actions? He does demand obedience to His word and shows no partiality or favor in His righteous judgment against the nations that murder unborn children.

In fact, it's worse. He equates this act with the worship of false gods and sees the nations that do it as being guilty of idolatry.

We see this in Psalm 106, how it recounts that Israel's sons and daughters were sacrificed to the idols, who the psalmist calls the demons.

He condemns His people for offering up their children to idols so that all will be well with them.

Ammonites who were guilty of ripping open the pregnant women of Gilead, telling them that He will not relent in bringing them under His kindling fire of judgment.

So in the United States today, with the blood of 60 million dead children on our hands, how do we really believe that we will somehow escape the judgment of God, even if He did not revoke punishment for His own people?

How prideful are we in the superiority of our national heritage? And how blind are we to think that the judge of all the earth won't do right because of the colors of our flag?

He demonstrates in His word that no one is exempt from His justice. All of us as individuals and as nations are tied to God by covenant.

This is how He relates to humanity. He speaks and demands obedience to His word and submission to His lordship.

Nations either obey Him and prosper under His blessing or break covenant with Him and are destroyed.

This is why God sends prophets to warn nations and those in authority to repent and return to the

Lord. The fact is that the church and the pro -life movement have abandoned the necessity of prophetic witness.

And if we ever hope to end abortion, it must be recovered. We have a responsibility as the church to warn our country that was founded on the gospel and the biblical worldview that the covenant -keeping

God's blessing while we habitually commit the sin of abortion. In Isaiah chapter 1,

God speaks to His own people, telling them He doesn't want any more of their offerings or empty gatherings or pious worship, that they become a burden to Him, that He will hide

His eyes from them due to the injustice that is among His people. He says, when you spread out your hands,

I will hide my eyes from you. Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood.

Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean. Remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes.

Cease to do evil, learn to do good, seek justice, correct oppression, bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.

It's been the failure of the modern day pro -life movement to realize that we are living in a country that must be called to national repentance.

They want to end abortion while ignoring the necessity of nationwide repentance.
