00:08
Grace and peace to you, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, please stand.
00:18
Today, the call to worship is taken from Psalm 11, a prayer of Moses, the man of God.
00:28
Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, wherever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are
00:44
God. You turn man to destruction and say, Return, O children of men.
00:53
For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, and like a watch in the night.
01:01
You carry them away like a flood. They are like a sleep in the morning. They are like grass which grows up.
01:08
In the morning it flourishes and grows up. In the evening it is cut down and withers.
01:14
For we have been consumed by your anger, and by your wrath we are terrified. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance.
01:27
For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We finish our years like a sigh.
01:33
The days of our lives are seventy years, and if by reason of strength they are eighty years.
01:39
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow, for it is soon cut off and we fly away.
01:47
Who knows the power of your anger? For as the fear of you, so is your wrath.
01:53
So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
02:00
Return, O Lord, how long, and have compassion on your servants.
02:07
O, satisfy us early with your mercy, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad according to the days in which you have afflicted us, the years in which we have seen evil.
02:18
Let your work appear to your servants, and your glory to their children. And let the beauty of the
02:24
Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands for us.
02:30
Yes, establish the work of our hands. Come now, let us worship him.
02:38
Please pray with me. O Lord, it is wonderful to consider your eternality.
02:49
Before the mountains were formed, O God, you are God. We thank you for the
02:57
Ancient of Days, who comes in the flesh. We thank you that Jesus Christ, coming in time, born under the law, is the great
03:08
I Am. O Lord, I pray that your people would be moved to worship you in spirit and in truth.
03:17
And we pray that our worship would be well -pleasing in your sight, and we have great confidence in this, because you have given us
03:24
Christ in your spirit. O Lord, we pray that your name would be hallowed here, and that we would bless you, and we ask all these things in Jesus' name.
03:34
Amen. Please kneel for the corporate confession of sin. Let us join together with one voice, confessing our sins.
03:49
O Father, we are gathered before you, the maker of heaven and earth, to confess that we have sinned and thought and worried and deemed.
04:06
We have not loved you with all our heart and soul. We have not loved you with all our mind and strength.
04:14
We have not even loved our neighbor as ourselves. In your mercy, heal our sorrow for the wrong we have done, and for the good we have left undone, so that we may hate our sins with a holy hatred.
04:29
Amen. Please stand. May that be true for us. May we actually hate our sin with a holy hatred.
04:37
O brethren, this cycle of redemption is daunting. We come into the presence of God, and we should be fearful because of our great sin and His holiness.
04:49
But then our hearts should turn to one of gratitude and thanksgiving, because we have a
04:55
Savior who is Christ the Lord, and in Him we have the forgiveness of sin. So if you are weighed down heavy with the ravages of guilt and shame, take heart today.
05:04
In Christ we have forgiveness. Amen. God, who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases,
05:14
He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.
05:20
For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy for those who fear
05:27
Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
05:35
O brethren, take heart today. In Christ your sins are forgiven. Amen. Amen.
05:42
Please take up the hymnal to one of the great hymns of the faith, number 195,
05:48
Joy to the world, the Lord is come. Number 195. What a great hymn.
08:11
Please take up your bulletins now, and I believe this is somewhat familiar to us. Any words of encouragement to us, brother?
08:18
Yeah, right after that, you might be tempted to say,
08:36
I have sinned against you alone, but just be aware, I have sinned against you alone. I have sinned against you alone.
08:45
And so be aware of that abbreviation there, Let us begin,
08:59
Psalm 51. Please remain standing for the reading of the word from the book of Revelation in chapter 3.
11:30
Revelation chapter 3. To the angel of the church in Sardis write,
11:36
These things says he who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your works, that you have a name, that you are alive, but you are dead.
11:47
Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.
11:55
Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Hold fast and repent.
12:01
Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour
12:07
I will come upon you. You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments, and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
12:18
He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the book of life, but I will confess his name before my father and before his angels.
12:30
He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. And to the angel the church in Philadelphia write,
12:38
These things says he who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens.
12:49
I know your works. See I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it, for you have a little strength, have kept my word, and have not denied my name.
13:01
Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say they are Jews and are not, but lie indeed.
13:08
I will make them come and worship before your feet and to know that I have loved you, because you have kept my command to persevere.
13:17
I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world to test those who dwell on the earth.
13:25
Behold, I am coming quickly. Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.
13:31
He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out no more.
13:38
I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my
13:46
God, and I will write on him my new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches.
13:54
And to the angel the church of Laodiceans write. These things says the
14:01
Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.
14:07
I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.
14:13
So then, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth, because you say
14:21
I am rich, have become wealthy, and I have need of nothing, and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.
14:30
I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich, and white garments that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed, and anoint your eyes with eye salve that you may see.
14:46
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.
14:52
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,
14:58
I will come into him and dine with him, and he with me. To him who overcomes,
15:04
I will grant to sit with me on my throne. As I also overcame and sat down with my
15:09
Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
15:16
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Let us confess our faith now with the joyful singing of the
15:31
Apostles' Creed. I believe in God, the
15:37
Father mighty, made man, and in Jesus Christ, His only begotten
15:50
Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the
15:55
Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified dead, and there
16:12
He descended into hell. The third day
16:17
He rose again, He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the living and the dead.
16:39
I believe in the Holy Spirit, I believe the
16:46
Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
17:05
Please turn in the hymnals to a very joyful song number 211,
17:20
God rest you merry gentlemen, number 211. God rest you merry gentlemen, when nothing you dismay, remember
17:38
Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day, to save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray.
17:52
Oh, time and joy, oh, tidings of come to certain shepherds brought tidings of the
18:54
Satan's power.
19:21
Rejoice then much in my tempest, storm, and wind, and when to Bethlehem straightway the
19:35
Son of God to find, oh, time... Please turn over two pages to number 213.
19:59
What child is this, number 213? ...to rest on Memphis' meadows guard and angels sing.
20:47
Where a young fear for sin a silent word is pleading, made for you.
22:44
Please prepare for the prayers of the people. Let us pray together now in unison.
23:04
O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsel, and all just works.
23:13
Give to us your servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments, and also that we being defended from the fear of our enemies may live in peace and quietness through the merits of Jesus Christ our
23:33
Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God forever.
23:40
Amen. Amen. Pray for the church of Jesus Christ, that it may be filled with truth and love and be found without fault at the day of your coming.
23:53
In this we pray to you, O Lord. For all ministers, missionaries in the mission of the church, that in faithful witness the gospel may be preached, we pray to you,
26:08
O Lord. ...great
27:07
clarity for what is the mission of your church and what is the mission of Ascension.
27:13
God grant us this, that we may bear great heavy fruit for you and for our joy.
27:27
Pray for those in positions of public trust, that they may serve justice and promote the dignity and freedom of every person.
27:35
In this we pray to you, O Lord. Pray for the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer.
28:11
For refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger, that they may be relieved and protected, we pray to you,
28:18
O Lord. Pray for this congregation, for those who are present, and for those who are absent, that we may be delivered from hardness of heart and show forth your glory in all that we do, we pray to you,
31:20
O Lord. Amen.
32:10
Please stand and let us take up the insert and find Psalm 96, the
32:15
Psalm of the month. Psalm 96. I want you to pay a close attention to look at verse 8, the second stave.
35:48
It says, He surely will appear. Psalm 96 awaited the arrival, and brethren,
35:57
He's come. And in this we give great rejoicing. Amen.
36:04
Please remain standing and take up your Bibles and turn to Luke chapter 2.
36:10
I'm going to read verses 1 through 20, but I'm only really focusing on one verse.
36:16
So Mark, if you want to preach on this on Christmas Eve, there will be plenty left, brother, for you to have on Christmas Eve, if that's where you're going.
36:25
Luke chapter 2, beginning at verse 1.
36:32
And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
36:43
The census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria, so all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
36:52
Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judea to the city of David, which is called
36:59
Bethlehem. Because he was of the house and lineage of David to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.
37:12
So it was that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.
37:18
And she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.
37:31
Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
37:38
And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.
37:47
And the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
37:55
For there is born to you this day in the city of David, a
38:01
Savior who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you.
38:07
You shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.
38:14
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts praising
38:19
God and saying, Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men.
38:28
So it was when the angels had gone away from them into heaven that the shepherds said to one another,
38:34
Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the
38:41
Lord has made known to us. And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger.
38:50
Now when they had seen him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this child.
38:58
And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
39:04
But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned glorifying and praising
39:12
God for all the things that they had heard and seen as it was told them.
39:18
This is God's holy and infallible word. Please pray with me.
39:30
O Lord, we revel in the occasion of your birth, the incarnation which ushers in peace.
39:43
O Lord, I pray that you would give us a greater sense of the peace that has been won by the
39:51
Prince of Peace. And in all the ways in which Christ has brought peace to the earth.
40:00
And O Lord, I pray that your people would have hearts that are filled with joy today as they consider this great work of redemption that has been accomplished for them.
40:10
That you have loved them so much that you have saved them and redeemed them and granted them your peace.
40:17
O Lord, we pray that you be glorified in this hour and it's in Jesus name we pray.
40:22
Amen. Please be seated. The title of the message today is the
40:32
Incarnation and Peace. And the verse that I'm going to be jumping off from is verse 14.
40:41
The only thing I'm really going to be talking about is verse 14 with some reference to the context to bring it into sharper focus.
40:52
I've got an interesting thesis statement for you today. Only four words. The praise of angels is the thesis statement of the sermon today.
41:02
The praise of angels. And if you need an outline, I have two points which is found in our text.
41:09
The first one is glory to God and the second is peace on earth.
41:15
Glory to God, number one. Peace on earth, the praise of angels.
41:25
One of the things that I think is a challenge of this season, I am not a topical preacher by nature.
41:33
I feel much more comfortable knowing what I have to preach next. And the next verses in the
41:39
Bible book that I'm studying, that's what I'm preaching next. And that is very helpful to me to know that that's what I have to preach.
41:45
I don't get to preach on what I want to. I have to preach the next verses. But today
41:50
I am delighted to be preaching a somewhat topical message on verse 14 of chapter 2.
41:59
Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.
42:09
The praise of angels. The incarnation in peace. The first question, children, that we have to ask.
42:19
Why do the angels sing a hymn of praise? Look at verse 13.
42:29
Fear has come over them. The glory of the Lord has shown around. The angel of the
42:35
Lord standing before them. And then there is a great multitude of angels and they break out in song.
42:46
Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.
42:53
Why do the angels sing? And they sing in words which are recognizable and intelligible to the shepherds.
43:05
What is the language of heaven? Is it Aramaic? It's the most common language of the
43:13
Jews at this time. Is it Hebrew? They know Hebrew. Most of them knew Greek.
43:18
Was it Latin? What was the language that the shepherds sang in?
43:24
I mean, the angels sang in that the shepherds understood. Why did they erupt in praise for what
43:34
God has done in sending forth His Son born of a virgin?
43:42
The arrival of the promised Prince of Peace is an occasion for the angels to break out into worship.
43:54
Now, to remember who the angels are, they are perfectly acquainted with the character and attributes of God.
44:02
They live, worship, and serve in God's presence.
44:08
We see through glass dimly, darkly, they see face to face.
44:15
They know really everything there is to know about God, it would seem. They're not constrained by sin.
44:29
Do you know that sin gives us a blurry vision of God? It distorts our vision a bit.
44:41
Their vision of God is clear. Our tendency toward minor and temporal unbelief taints our understanding and our hope and our confidence in God.
44:53
It doesn't seem that the angels are tainted by any unbelief. Our sin, our transgressions, our stains on us, their pockmarks on us, they are barriers to communion with God, and the angels don't have this.
45:15
They dwell behind the heavenly veil, and it seems they have some free passage and access between the two realms.
45:29
Why do the angels sing? It's a big question for us.
45:36
Why do they sing? Their hymn of praise begins to change the shepherds.
45:47
Look at verse 9. And behold, an angel of the
45:52
Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.
46:02
We've talked about this a number of times. The artist's renderings of little cherubim and harps and little fat babies does not do justice to what angels are.
46:17
They are God's warriors, and that's why when they come into the presence of people, they are struck with fear, and they think maybe this is even
46:27
God Himself that's approached them. They are fierce, and they are strong, and the testimony of Scripture is everybody cowers in their presence.
46:39
These are God's warriors. And the shepherds, we learned about David, they're not people who are soft, timid men.
46:53
They kill lions and bears to protect their sheep. These are hard men in the fields.
47:00
These aren't fearful men. These are men who would stop those who would steal the sheep.
47:07
They're the men who would get between the sheep and the animals who would be seeking to destroy them.
47:12
These are not fearful men, but they come into the presence of the angel, and they're struck with fear.
47:25
The shepherds see the those who live in the presence of God, His fierce warriors, and they're greatly afraid.
47:34
But the angel comforts them. Look at verse 10. He says,
47:41
Do not be afraid, for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which will be to all people.
47:54
For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior who is
47:59
Christ the Lord, and this will be the sign to you. You will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.
48:09
My very incomplete vision of God and His dealings with the angels is they are soldiers at attention, and He says,
48:19
Go here and do this, and they immediately launch out and go and start doing it.
48:24
That's how I think about them. But as I pondered and meditated on this text of scripture today,
48:32
I am struck by how interested the angels are.
48:39
The angels are standing in awe. They know who
48:47
Christ is, and they know who God is, and they know who the Holy Spirit is.
48:52
They know who sinful humanity is. They've been present and witnessed all of the failings of humanity.
49:04
And one thing I think we should point out, sinful humanity is at war with God, and the angels of God are
49:13
His warriors. Sinful man is at enmity with God and His ministers, the angels.
49:22
And here, knowing all that's happened in history, knowing about the fallen angels,
49:30
I believe the angels of God are in wonder that Christ would come in the flesh.
49:38
They are in awe that the second person of the Trinity would come and rescue
49:45
His creation. The King is coming, and He's returning to save His bride, and even the very dust of the ground which belongs to Him.
50:00
So I don't think this is just dutiful service in the life of the angels.
50:06
The angels now have new cause to worship their God. It's astounding, isn't it?
50:14
The revelation of Jesus Christ is an occasion for the angels to see more of the glory of God.
50:27
One commentator has said that what has happened in the birth of the
50:33
Redeemer is the outcome and revelation of the glory of God.
50:41
For in the coming of Christ, the zenith of divine self -revelation has been reached.
50:55
Do you believe that? Think about Trinitarian orthodoxy.
51:02
How sharply does it come into focus with the arrival of the incarnate Christ? We understand a
51:09
Father in relation to His Son and a Spirit in relation to the Father and the Son because of the revelation of Jesus Christ.
51:21
The zenith, the peak of God's self -revelation, even in the sight of the angels.
51:27
My commentary has been reached. Therefore, to God belongs the honor and the glory.
51:38
And to Him who is in highest heaven, all praise should be accorded for the event.
51:53
Incredible things have happened here. The good tidings, look at our text again, of great joy.
52:05
Verse 10 is the arrival, the birth of the
52:10
King of Kings. And we have to maintain the kingship of Christ because what we have here is a cosmic battle unfolding and we have the arrival of the
52:26
King. The King is coming to reclaim and restore and renew the entirety of the created order.
52:39
Not only is He going to rescue sinners from the clutches of sin and death and Satan, He's also going to take hold of His creation and say, this creation is mine,
52:50
I'm going to restore it and renew it and I'm going to fill it with glory. These are the most landmark of events in history.
53:05
The arrival of the King of Kings, the Savior who is
53:11
Christ the Lord. And this King has arrived to conquer
53:18
His enemies. Do you realize that we are conquered foes?
53:28
Isn't it glorious? The enemies of God, the haters of God are conquered by the love of Christ and they are restored to Him, not as merely getting out of death and prison as foreign combatants, but they are brought into the family of God.
53:52
This conquering King's conquest is so comprehensive that He comes to win the nations as His spoils of war.
54:04
The King Himself has come to win the peace.
54:11
He comes to reconcile sinful men to God with whom they have waged war after.
54:22
As R .C. Sproul has famously said, sin is cosmic treason.
54:31
Christ has come to make His enemies His friends. I believe this is why the angels sing.
54:40
They are in awe of the redeeming love of the Father, the
54:46
Son, and the Spirit. They are utterly undone and the announcer shows up to speak to the shepherds and the other angels fly in or however they get there, they fly and show up and they burst out into song.
55:03
Glory to God in the highest. The enemies of God are able to be reconciled.
55:19
And those to whom peace accords are given, they're not merely spared that imprisonment and death.
55:26
They're made members of God's family and even maybe more perplexing, made to be joint heirs with Christ and His kingdom.
55:37
Well, let's consider the first of the two elements.
55:44
First, the doxology, the glory giving by the angels in the presence of the shepherds.
55:57
Glory is the Greek word doxa and it's where we get the word doxology.
56:07
We are giving glory to God and if you open up your bulletins, I want to show you two glory giving sections.
56:16
The first, it's considered a little less significant in terms of its stature, but it's no less glorious, is the glory apotre.
56:29
This is giving glory to the Father. That's what we do in our liturgy. And after we've had the ministry of word and sacrament and been assured of these promises and made these commitments, we conclude our service with the doxology.
56:47
We reflexively give glory to God for what He's done in redemption. The micro of that has been our own liturgical experience on a given
56:57
Sunday. It's a big word. It's an important word.
57:05
And the angels say glory to God. Glory to God in the highest.
57:14
And there's an observation I'd like to make about this, that worship begets worship.
57:23
In verse 14, the angels worship and the shepherds see the worship of the angels.
57:32
And by the time we go down to the end of our section that I read, it says, then the shepherds returned, verse 20, glorifying and praising
57:41
God for all the things that they had heard and seen. And it was told them. Worship begets worship.
57:49
Someone passing by our church building, when our voices are raised, they are confronted with something.
57:58
They're either going to join the holy chorus or they're going to reject it.
58:05
Our worship is spiritual warfare. When we sing praises to our
58:12
God, the pagans reject it and their judgment is sure. When we together with one voice we say to God and to one another whose side we are on.
58:31
The message of the gospel is are you going to acknowledge Christ as Savior and Lord?
58:40
Are they going to accept the terms of peace?
58:47
And what are the terms of peace? Absolute surrender to Christ.
58:54
He's Lord and Savior. He's the king. All authority belongs to him.
59:02
There is no easy believism. There is no cheap grace. When we come to Christ appropriately, the terms of our peace is absolute surrender.
59:13
We acknowledge Christ as king. The reason this worship is warfare is the people of God raise that banner of Christ, the king.
59:28
They blow the trumpet. They march in formation. They declare to everyone who can see them which side they are on.
59:38
We're not going to go there, but in Luke 12 Jesus says some paradoxical things about bringing peace.
59:44
He says he comes to bring a sword. Family allegiances become divided.
59:55
Some of you were raised in families that weren't serious about the Christian faith and you had to make a decision, a commitment.
01:00:04
Which side are you on? Think about a great illustration of this in the
01:00:11
American Civil War. Ask Mark about all the details. You're part of the
01:00:17
U .S. Army, someone like Lee, but you hail from Virginia.
01:00:24
You are offered the commission to be the leader of the Union Army, but you get better pay and better benefits.
01:00:34
You get an audience with the President of the United States, but you have to be willing to attack your hometown.
01:00:43
How many families are torn by the war between the states?
01:00:52
The question was given, which uniform will you wear? That question is still true for us.
01:01:01
Whose side are you on? Are you on the side of Christ the
01:01:08
King or are you on some other side? And another observation, is anything more dangerous on the battlefield than timid soldiers?
01:01:23
That's terrible for the battlefield. You've got to forget all that could happen to you and you have to laser focus, be on the mission, take that hill, knock out that bridge, whatever it is.
01:01:39
It seems to me the church is languishing a bit currently.
01:01:46
Do we have that kind of single minded zeal and purpose?
01:01:52
Are we really raising the banner of Christ? Do we blow the trumpet? Do we sound the horn?
01:01:58
Do we herald in the streets that Christ is Lord? That first statement of our text today, glory to God in the highest.
01:02:10
He is receiving glory as the one who occupies the space of highest heaven and the glory that is to be offered to him is of the highest degree.
01:02:26
The angels sing because they are in awe of God. They are glorying in what he has done in the incarnation of Christ to win the peace.
01:02:42
Can you imagine being the angels? I don't know how this works, but I imagine the angels being present and watching the fall of man into sin unfold.
01:03:00
Maybe some would want to rush down there and even right then have the war with the great serpent.
01:03:09
Can you imagine their horror when they observe the murder of Abel by his own brother
01:03:16
Cain? Can you imagine what they know about God and what he intended for man created in his image and they observe and they see all of these things and they've seen all of the failures of humanity throughout all of these years.
01:03:34
And then the word comes out that the second person of the
01:03:39
Trinity is going to be clothed in flesh and the angels burst out into song rejoicing in the salvation that will come to man.
01:03:55
And what's never talked about, they are actually being reconciled to the redeemed in Christ too, because remember they're
01:04:03
God's ministers. The sinful man is at enmity with God and he's got to be at enmity with his warring angels.
01:04:16
Christ has come to win the peace.
01:04:22
Now if the angels who have seen the glory of God since the beginning of their creation if their response is to be this spectacular and majestic how much more should our worship be filled with that weightiness?
01:04:41
We are the direct recipients and beneficiaries of this work accomplished by Christ.
01:04:48
He's coming to save us. He's coming to defeat the enemy who wants to hurt us.
01:04:55
He's the one who's coming to rescue us. We should be a doxa kind of people where glory is just being admitted from our persons continuously because salvation is found only in Christ the
01:05:11
Lord and that salvation has come. It's come in the flesh.
01:05:21
The second part of this I'd like us to consider. The worship due our
01:05:31
God for sending his son to give us peace gives rise to a question.
01:05:43
The question is in what ways does Christ bring peace? The first place
01:05:51
I'd like you to turn with me. We're going to turn to a couple places. These will be very brief but I would like you to look at this with your own eyes.
01:06:00
How does Christ bring peace? The first place
01:06:07
I'd like you to turn is the book of Colossians in chapter 1. I want you to think about this and the scope of the
01:06:20
Trinitarian plan of redemption and then the fulfillment and execution of it by Christ and the resulting benefits and fruit as it unfolds.
01:06:42
Begin reading in verse 15, one of my most favorite sections of Scripture. Colossians 1 .15
01:06:49
And I want you to think about the angels and the perspective that they have seeing these things unfold and how we too should respond to the revelation of the person of Christ.
01:07:02
Who is Christ? Look at verse 15. He is the image of the invisible
01:07:08
God, the firstborn over all creation. The little baby that they've announced is the steward and king over all creation.
01:07:22
It's astounding when you think of it. He has the first rank.
01:07:30
Creation is in submission to Christ, the Lord. And here's where it gets really astounding and it hearkens back to John's Gospel, chapter 1 verse 16 says,
01:07:43
For by him all things were created. Late in time appearing in the flesh
01:07:51
Christ is the creator of all of these things. The ancient of days arrives in the womb of the virgin
01:08:00
Mary and is born into the world to bring peace. The king is coming to reclaim his creatures and his creation.
01:08:10
It's very exciting. For by him, referring to Christ, all things were created that are in heaven, that are on earth, visible and invisible.
01:08:24
Whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
01:08:32
All things were created through him and for him. I'm going to pause here.
01:08:38
We get mocked a lot about our optimism and eschatology and all these things.
01:08:44
But I'm here today to tell you this world belongs to Jesus Christ. Longwood, Florida belongs to Jesus Christ.
01:08:54
It's his. They may not know it, they may not act like it, but this dirt is his.
01:09:01
And all the people and all the bugs and everything that flies around belongs to him. He possesses it.
01:09:11
All these things were created through him and for him and he is before all things. Verse 17, and in him all things consist.
01:09:21
And he is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead. So it's an amazing thing.
01:09:29
He's the firstborn over the creation. It's his. He's the first rank.
01:09:35
He's the creator and he's also the firstborn over the new creation. However glorious Christ is in all of that creative work, it's amplified and magnified by his restoration of all things.
01:09:52
He's the proprietor, the first rank officer over all things.
01:09:59
The created order and in the new creation. That he might in all things have the preeminence.
01:10:07
Christ has to have the first rank in all things. So this is who Christ is, according to Paul in Colossians.
01:10:15
And this is where the incarnation and the idea of the incarnation in relation to peace comes in.
01:10:20
Colossians 1 .19 For it pleased the father that in him all the fullness should dwell.
01:10:29
If there be any fullness, Christ possesses it. Whatever the fullness of the
01:10:37
Godhead is, Christ possesses divinity in that way and he possesses the fullness of humanity and it is through Christ that he's going to reconcile all things to himself.
01:10:50
He's going to do it by him. Whether things on earth or things in heaven.
01:11:01
Children, I want you to look at that last sentence. Very much the heart of our message today, the theme of peace.
01:11:09
How does he make this peace? Having made peace through the blood of his cross.
01:11:20
So the king is going to come and he's going to reclaim his creation and the creatures who have fallen.
01:11:27
And the way he's going to do that after he fulfills all righteousness, he's going to win the peace.
01:11:35
He's going to stomp on the serpent's head on the cross. That's where it's going to happen.
01:11:47
And that's the place, that's the day, that's the occasion, that event is the way that Christ has brought peace to the earth.
01:11:57
Not only the created order of earth, but also apparently the cosmic realm as well.
01:12:03
Things on earth, things on heaven. So there are cataclysmic, spectacular things happening at the incarnation of Christ.
01:12:16
And it's so spectacular that the angels, who I have to think are not easily impressed, they are erupting in worship and giving glory to God for the arrival of Christ in the flesh.
01:12:30
Now turn on our way back. Turn to the book of Ephesians really quickly in chapter 2.
01:12:51
The first way that I want to describe that Christ brings peace is that he himself is our peace.
01:13:03
How could we be at intimacy with God ultimately if we've been united to Christ?
01:13:10
It's impossible. Things which angels long to look into.
01:13:19
One of the many glorious facets of the precious gemstone of our union with Christ is that he is our peace.
01:13:30
Ephesians chapter 2 beginning at verse 14. For we have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
01:13:38
We were far off, verse 13 says. The spoils of war for the conquesting king is the nations being brought into the church.
01:13:49
He's come to conquer the world in his righteousness and love and grace and bring us in.
01:13:55
Verse 14 says, for he himself is our peace who made both one and has broken down the middle wall of separation.
01:14:05
He's referring to the circumcision contextually and the uncircumcision. The Jews and the
01:14:11
Gentiles. Because Christ is our peace. He's broken down the walls that divide us that the sources of enmity and strife have been crushed under the righteous foot of Christ.
01:14:26
He's abolished in his flesh the enmity that is the law of commandments contained in ordinances.
01:14:33
So as to create in himself one new man from the two. Jews and Gentiles couldn't be more sharply at odds.
01:14:45
He makes one man the church. One bride out of the
01:14:50
Jews and the Gentiles. He makes peace that he might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross.
01:15:00
Our union with Christ in one another, it's accomplished on the cross. The conquering king wins the victory on the cross and that's the source of our unity.
01:15:13
He came and preached peace to you who are far off and to those who were near and through him we both have access by one spirit to the father.
01:15:28
Now what's really interesting here is the two sides of this. We cannot be at enmity ultimately with God if we've been united to Christ.
01:15:38
Then we also have to see the other side that our union to Christ reveal
01:15:44
God's love for us. So we think about justification, the legal requirements of being right with God and Christ.
01:15:55
God and his love for his natural enemies according to the flesh, his love is so overwhelming that he sends
01:16:03
Christ to save them because he loves them, not because of their merit.
01:16:11
Therefore we're united to Christ and therefore since we're united to Christ we cannot be at enmity with God. So it goes back all to the love of God.
01:16:21
The second way is Christ gives us peace with God. Turn quickly to the book of Romans.
01:16:28
This is going to be quick, Romans 5. Maybe the biggest way that we think of peace, if we were to take a survey of the
01:16:47
Hebraic scriptures, the idea of Shalom and even the idea of Arene, the
01:16:53
Greek word for that in the New Testament would be the epicenter of this would be reconciled to God.
01:16:59
That would be the centerpiece of this. Romans 5 says therefore having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our
01:17:14
Lord Jesus Christ. How do we have access?
01:17:20
We have access through the Lord Jesus Christ through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
01:17:40
The idea of peace is truncated in our modern understanding.
01:17:48
It's usually related to inner tranquility or something like that. This peace, this
01:17:55
Shalom, this Arene is a comprehensive wholeness.
01:18:03
The entirety of our human existence, we have been made at peace with God. We have been reconciled to God.
01:18:11
Christ himself is our peace. He's the only avenue of our peace and he has given us and granted us peace with God.
01:18:25
He's also, we learn in 2 Corinthians 5, and this is another astounding idea.
01:18:32
He's given us the ministry of reconciliation. We communicate this reconciliation that God is doing in Christ.
01:18:39
What a privilege. Why are we so silent about the gospel? We need to go into the streets and say, the
01:18:46
King has come, you're conquered, kiss the sun. This submission, you have to submit entirely, but oh, the glories you will see, the benefits you will enjoy in knowing
01:19:00
Christ the Lord. We need to get out in the streets and preach Christ to them.
01:19:08
There's a third thing under this idea, answering the question. It's related to that text,
01:19:15
I'm not going to go there again in Ephesians 2. Christ has given us peace with our fellow man. Two Christians should not remain at odds with one another.
01:19:27
It should never happen. Never, ever happen. If he has broken down all of the barriers, the middle wall of separation, if we have been in Christ, engrafted into his peace, and our brother also has been engrafted into Christ, it would seem that that peace would extend to those two parties.
01:19:49
And it's our unwillingness to be at peace with our brethren that keeps us at odds.
01:19:56
Christ gives us a peace with our fellow man. And finally, I'm just going to read it myself without having you turn there.
01:20:05
Christ gives us a real peace in our inner person, in our inner man.
01:20:13
This idea is abused elsewhere, but we need to have a proper view of it. This is found in Colossians chapter 3.
01:20:25
It says, therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long -suffering, bearing with one another and forgiving one another.
01:20:35
If anyone has a complaint against another, even as Christ forgave you, so also you must do.
01:20:46
Got a spirit of bitterness and unforgiveness? How is it possible you've been forgiven so much?
01:20:56
Above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And this is a real whole comprehensive peace.
01:21:06
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful.
01:21:17
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the
01:21:25
Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to the
01:21:32
God, to God the Father through him. Everything I am, everything you are now is shaped by this peace that's been conferred in Christ.
01:21:46
Don't contradict your holy name. Don't contradict that uniform that you wear, that side that you're on.
01:21:55
Don't contradict it with your unbelief and your unwillingness to walk and live in this peace.
01:22:04
Well, time is short. I'm going to give you a few words of application. First, are you highly prizing your union with Christ, who is your peace?
01:22:27
The angels who have a near perfect knowledge, they're not omniscient, they are utterly taken and engaged with the worship of God and the consideration of what
01:22:40
Christ is doing, coming in the flesh. How much more so should we be prizing what
01:22:47
Christ has done? He is our peace. Brethren, I want to comfort you today if you're in Christ.
01:22:58
You have peace with God. Oh, there's nothing better than that.
01:23:04
That really forms the hub of shalom and scripture, to be at peace with God. That's wholeness.
01:23:11
That's blessing untold. If you're in Christ, you have peace with God. Worship Him.
01:23:19
Bow down and give thanks to Him. Third, in light of this peace, you and I need to be reconciled to our fellow men with whom there has been strife.
01:23:31
If there's been any strife between you and a brother in Christ, you need to go make it right because Christ is our peace.
01:23:44
If you've been united to Christ and you're at peace with God, if the peace has been won in Christ on the cross with your fellow men, then you ought to be thoroughly enjoying the wholeness of this biblical shalom.
01:24:04
If you're not enjoying it, the deficiency is not in the provision. It's in our appropriation of it.
01:24:13
And finally, for the theology geeks, great intro into the
01:24:19
Lord's Supper, the fifth application. If you have time today, I'd encourage you to read Leviticus chapter 3 and chapter 7.
01:24:30
There is an offering given in the Old Covenant administration called the
01:24:37
Peace Offering. It's the only one of the
01:24:43
Levitical sacrifices in which the offerer receives back some of the sacrifice to eat.
01:24:52
Isn't that amazing that the system structure even in the
01:24:59
Old Covenant preaches and teaches us about our union with Christ? You and I are going to have the privilege of coming to the table and partaking of the
01:25:11
Peace Offering that was accepted by God in Christ. Glory.
01:25:17
Amen? Let's pray together. Lord, we thank you for the provision of your word.
01:25:26
We thank you for the peace that you have brought in with your incarnation. Oh Lord, I pray that your people would lay hold of that peace today and that they would even taste it with their lips and enjoy it in their bellies as they come to the table.
01:25:44
We ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen. Let us continue our worship through the presentation of our tithes and offerings.
01:26:22
Please stand. In our recent lessons in the teaching hour on Sunday mornings, we've considered in Philippians the idea of giving.
01:26:38
And it's great that we have this reminder in our worship that we should emulate God in our giving.
01:26:44
Let us pray. Our gracious God and Father, we thank you so much. As we have been reminded here this morning that you have given us far greater than earthly treasures.
01:26:56
Although this treasure is contained in earthen vessels, it is the glory of the gospel, the redemption and peace with you.
01:27:06
We thank you, Lord, that we can, so moved by the Spirit, render unto you part of what you have given to us for the work of your church.
01:27:17
We pray, Father, that we've done so cheerfully. We pray that we have done so generously.
01:27:23
We pray, Father, that as these gifts have been rendered unto the church for the use of the church to spread your gospel, that they would be used faithfully.
01:27:32
And we ask all of these things in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, as we have been reminded that we should give glory to God, let us take the angels' admonition and sing glory to God in the glory of pottery.
01:27:46
To the Father, and to the
01:27:55
Son, as it was in the...
01:28:23
The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the
01:28:31
Lord. It is right in the good and joyful thing that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you,
01:28:42
O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, because you sent your beloved
01:28:49
Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life, that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may, without shame or fear, rejoice to behold his appearing.
01:29:07
Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing
01:29:57
Hosanna. Amen.
01:30:35
Please be seated. I hope you noticed that when we said, therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we just read about that today, so may that come to mind every time we sing this.
01:30:48
Let us pray. O God, the Father of all mercies and God of all consolation, grant your gracious presence in the effectual working of your
01:30:59
Spirit in us, and so to sanctify these elements both of bread and wine, and to bless your own ordinance, that we may receive by faith the body and blood of Jesus Christ, crucified for us, and so to feed upon him, that he may be one with us, and we one with him, that he may live in us, and we in him, and for him who has loved us, and given himself for us, and we ask this in Jesus' name.
01:31:32
Amen. The night in which our Lord was betrayed, surrounded by his disciples, he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to them, saying,
01:31:44
Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Likewise, after supper, he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he blessed it, and gave it to them, saying,
01:31:57
Drink this, all of you. This is the new covenant in my blood. As often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you proclaim the
01:32:06
Lord's death until he comes. Therefore, we proclaim the faith. Christ will come again.
01:32:17
Let's now approach the table by praying together. We do not presume to come to this
01:32:24
Lord's table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.
01:32:33
We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same
01:32:40
Lord who always shows mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear
01:32:48
Son, Jesus Christ, and the drink of his blood, that our sinful bodies may be cleaned by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us.
01:33:04
Amen. Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us, the gifts of God for the people of God.
01:33:13
Christ, when he starts to save you, full of pity, he did say,
01:33:58
Lord, he did say, forsaken take me,
01:38:56
Jesus, take me, by thy
01:39:40
Holy Spirit to be filled.
01:44:10
Amen. Let us join our voices together in prayer. Almighty and ever -living
01:44:18
God, we thank you for speaking us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your
01:44:26
Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your
01:44:36
Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom, and that, Lord, grant us this other benefit, that you will never allow us to forget these things, but having them imprinted on our hearts, we grow and increase daily in the faithful job work and every good deed.
01:44:55
Now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our
01:45:04
Lord, to him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, the honor and glory, now and forever.
01:45:11
Amen. Please stand. Receive now the blessing.
01:45:51
Now may the God of all hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope by the power of the
