So we've been going through the book of Matthew since about 2002 Go ahead

But Jesus aware of this said oh you with a little faith. Why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?

Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five lows for the five thousand and how many baskets you gathered or the seven lows for the four?

Thousand and how many baskets you gathered? How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread?

I heard sermons and guys were talking about that these verses said that God is here to make all of our dreams come true or God is not going to hurt you if you start attending church again, so It just kind of blows my mind about how much we can miss if we don't simply just focus on the scriptures and allow them

I'm about to say and just kind of Consolidate it and condense it down into a couple sentences a couple thoughts and I'll unpack those as I go along But those thoughts would be this

Beware of the permeating and life -destroying influence of false false teachers and false doctrine

They will work to ruin the life of the Christian and ugly destroy the life of the unbeliever

Beware of that permeating influence of false doctrine and we also must like Christ work diligently relentlessly and tirelessly to lovingly warn those who are enslaved to false doctrines and In false religious systems before they go to hell forever.

And if they die in their sins if they if they believe in what? False doctrines are teaching them soteriologically are about their salvation.

They're going to hell False doctrine the influence of false teachers or leaven is so insidious that it doesn't seem destructive but it will slowly and Effectively destroy your life from top to bottom

so Last week pastor Luke had a crazy exhaustive study on the timing of the kingdom

And he showed us clearly the spiritual blindness of the Pharisees and the Sadducees Matthew 16 3 It says in the morning will be a stormy today

But the sky is red and threatening, you know how to interpret the appearance of the sky But you cannot interpret the signs of the times these guys these religious leaders who were supposed to be the representatives of God I'm a planet here.

We're absolutely blind to what is going on They're spiritually buying blind because they're dead spiritual state and because of the teachings and their example

It was because of what their influence and what they were broadcasting what they were promulgating to everybody

That's why they were blind Matthew 15 verse 14 says Jesus says this and these are the scariest words that you could ever ever hear as an

Individual or as a nation. He says let them alone They are blind guides and if the blind leads the blind both will fall into a pit

Jesus his first advent was multifaceted in purpose. Of course. He was coming to be our representative

He was coming to fulfill all righteousness. He was coming to accomplish the redemptive work of God for us, but he also came to levy judgment against the house of Israel because of How corrupt and polluted and completely lopsided it had to become?

he says let them alone and a part of their spiritual blindness was because of The judgment of God on them.

You could see all throughout scriptures from top to bottom blindness is a sign of God's judgment But it was not only through his judgment.

Think about their disciples these guys have been handling thousands of loaves of bread just you know

He fed the 5 ,000 they fed the 4 ,000 9 ,000 not including women and children so the disciples are have been constantly handling and Smelling and spiraling and just dealing with bread because Jesus is getting them not only to to feed the masses

But he's he's also getting them to understand Spiritual truths through natural examples.

That's why he's using bread here And then Jesus says this and he does it all the time with the disciples.

He says oh you of little faith You know you so he's so dull of hearing. Do you not understand now?

I don't know about you, but if Jesus said that to me But Jesus said that to me of you why can't you understand what's going on?

I'm not talking about bread here if I wanted to create bread if I needed bread if I was talking about bread You know all the bread that I just hadn't created.

So what is happening is Jesus is setting these men up so that he can impart to them this crazy important Truth and that's the truth of be wearing

To be where to watch out of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees So what

I'm going to do quickly is just go through what some basic questions just unpacking really what these verses are talking about The biggest question is what is leaven?

So leaven works through the bread slowly to cause it to rise and it's used to produce a new batch of dough for a new

So what Jesus is saying to them is we got you got to beware of the Pharisees and the Sadducees you got to beware

Of all of the religious of their influence of all the religious influence that you have received already

You cannot let them have this impact on you it's gonna slowly invade

And infect and corrupt your life. That's what he's telling them Just like rainwater slowly

Eroding that's exactly what this will do to the lives of his disciples

And he's also saying you can't mix their false teachings and ungodly example into your new lives in Christ You got to let go of everything that that you learn with them

You got to let go of that all of their example all their erroneous Unbiblical teaching you cannot it cannot be grafted into this new life in this new creation that I have for you

That's what he's talking about So the question now is what is spiritual leaven?

What is it? Well Luke chapter 12 verse 1 it explains it This is in the meantime when so many thousands of people had gathered together

That they were trampling one another he began to say to his disciples first beware of the leaven of the

Pharisees, which is hypocrisy leaven is hypocrisy and This is how it affects us who are saved right?

This is how if we let hypocrisy into our lives as Christians It's gonna erode and it's gonna affect us.

It's gonna detrimentally Hurt us in our faith walk Leaven is hypocrisy.

What is hypocrisy Jeff went in he's already gone into so well that The Pharisees were hypocrites that hypocrisy is just it's faking it

Hypocrisy is it's heartless religious practice Matthew 15 verse 8 says this the people honors me with their lips

But their heart is far from me It's it's it's a religiousness this

It's a religiosity. That's devoid of a heart, right? It's it's doing what we do without Being motivated with a love for God.

For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate but inside they're full of greed and self -indulgence

Woe to you scribes and Pharisees you hypocrites for you all you are all like whitewashed tombs

Which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness so you who also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are all full of hypocrisy and Lawlessness, it's just acting

It's hard sometimes as hard as you as you're scrolling down your Facebook feed to see some of these popular preachers

In the shows that they put on for the masses. I mean, this is what hypocrisy truly is it's

It's claiming that you're doing this all for God that you're doing this all for the glory of God But you're actually only doing it for self

You know, it's it's just it's it's rough To think about the judgment that's awaiting these men who are just just outright charlatans and hucksters and believe me.

I when I read them But I truly care about these guys are gonna face a righteous and just God and have to give an account

For these shows that they're putting on these performances that they're putting on hypocrisy is just faking it

It's mask wearing But I think there's also another definition of hypocrisy that I think can really bite us and really affect us as Christians And I and I'm guilty of it myself

But listen to this definition, it says hypocrisy is a pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved

Attitude. So what is that? What is that talking about? Hypocrisy is just simply Man -pleasing the leaven of hypocrisy if we allow that to slowly work into our

Christian experience into our lives If we allow that Man -pleasing motive to be a part of our

Christian walk then it's gonna it's gonna cause decay It's gonna cause spiritual decay and I've been guilty man

I got I'm the first to say I've I've been there been so overly occupied about the opinions of others fearing

Man before I fear God Doing what I do just to get the approval of people.

We kind of default to that, right? We default to that one of our greatest Wars, I think and I can't think of a greater war in the life of the

Christian is to not rob God of the glory That's due to him and him only You know you think about the way that we look at about ourselves and the goals that we set in our life the things that we

Pursue are we truly doing this for him? Are we truly doing this to reflect the glory to one that to the one that it's do or are we just absorbing that glory?

Into ourself with eleven of hypocrisy is exactly that Just man -pleasing

Just doing it for me it's doing it for accolades It's doing it for the applause

It's doing it so I can have some inner peace that I've received the the the approval of the people around me

So I can I can sleep at night That's what hypocrisy is it's it's not the genuine article

It's not truly the outworking of of true faith God glorifying faith, but we see that all around us

Don't we everywhere we go? Jesus is saying beware of this don't allow this to work its way into your life

Matthew 6 you see it everywhere Matthew 6 is pretty much from Start to finish an indictment against the hypocritical man -pleasing in seen in the

Pharisees and the Sadducees Matthew 6 1 through 2 says beware practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them

For then you will have no reward from your father who is in heaven Thus when you give to the needy sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets

That they may be look praised by others Truly I say to you they have received their reward

We don't want that type of reward if we're looking for a man to be the source of our reward We don't want that Because the most the more you elevate yourself the more jealous people man is so fickle man is so crazy

You're not gonna ever receive the type of reward and this type of substance that you're looking for in man

If you're looking to him to be that source that makes sense if you really you're seeking that reward.

It's not worth it It will not give you the peace that you're looking for in Matthew 6 verse 5 says and when you pray you must not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the street corners

That they may be seen by others truly. I say to you they have received the reward and then in Matthew 23

It says they do all their deeds to be seen by others For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues

And greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others Be aware

Be aware of this one of the most Heartbreaking things is as I say these things believe me.

I'm a brother to the body I mean we should never slander the bride of Christ and I never want to do that that will only cause

Erosion in your own life if you're just all about slandering the bride of Christ or any type of leadership

But it's amazing how we see such an impotence in the American Evangelical Church because the basis of everything is man -centered the philosophy of ministry across our nation is based on how we can please man and And not so much how we can get into the scriptures and lay our lives down for the glory and the honor of Jesus Christ Right.

And so what does that cause it's caused so much of the church to be Impotent and evangelism in so many other ways

So importantly when you go into a church, you need to ask yourself. What are we doing? Why are we doing what we're doing regardless of what it is?

Are we doing it? So that we can get more people to come here and sit in the seats

So we can feel good about ourselves and we can have some semblance of success Much of the

American Evangelical Church operates like that. That's the foundation of it all Let's just get somebody into a location and if we got him enough butts in the seats and buildings and budgets

Then we're somehow doing what God has called us to do. No, that is an underlying Foundation of man -pleasing that is not biblical and not right.

We need to we need to be praying about our church in America be praying that the foundations are torn up and once again

We lay it upon the foundation that we build upon is the Word of God all for his glory all for his honor, right?

It's just it's absolutely crucial But it's actually that that leaven of hypocrisy has worked its way out all throughout the church

You were running well who hindered you from obeying the truth This persuasion is not from him who calls you and here it is a little leaven leavens the whole lump.

Justification by your own works You who are severed from Christ you would be justified by the law.

That is the basis That is the focus of the leaven of their teaching Is that we can help somehow be made right through obedience to the law of God through works through our own righteous works

Jesus was saying this to his disciples This is what they were absolutely engulfed in they were saturated in that teaching

That was their they were a lot of times Jesus would say things the Pharisees and Sadducees and and they would say don't don't you know understand you were disrespected these guys

These guys had such an incredible lofty Position in the eyes of the disciples and they had been so influenced by this false doctrine

But what did Jesus do at that moment? He said you need to you must be aware of this You cannot let this affect you.

You cannot let this in so just like Jesus said we need to we need to we need to warn those who are part of these false religious systems about What they're getting themselves into we are not saved

By our own works in any way shape or form So many people when you're out on the street evangelizing you get this question all the time or this remark they say

You know, there's 6 ,000 there's 7 ,000 religions out there why why is yours the only one that's true

So you say you're telling me Christianity is wrong and every one of those other religions are false. The only answer to that is yes

That's true. But the reason is because every other religion save ours Will tell you that if you just pull yourself up by your own bootstraps if you try hard enough

Then maybe one day God is gonna allow you into his kingdom Justify you make you right before him if you just if you work hard enough

It's a works -based system of salvation true Our true faith is a grace based system of salvation meaning that our salvation rests not anything that we can do

In ourselves or of ourselves, but it rests fully on the work of Jesus Christ in him alone, right?

Matthew 23 verse 4 talking about the Pharisees says they tie up heavy burdens that are hard to bear and They lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger

It was the burden of justification by the law of God That we cannot accomplish

Matthew 23 13 Excuse me 15 says woe but woe to you scribes and Pharisees you hypocrites for you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces

For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter in go in Woe to you scribes and Pharisees you hypocrites for you travel across sea and land to make a single

Proselyte and when he becomes a proselyte you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourself

You think about that that is just so sobering and I and I hope this sobers you today to get you into the into the position to where you become now a warner of those who are in false religions a

It's like really again he's always talking about how dastardly how how wrong justification by works is and I Just it's just amazing if you listen to his teaching and listen to that ministry over He is absolutely focused on that why because they battled relentlessly against that the doctrine of justification by works if justification by faith alone is the heart of the gospel then

It is the most destructive component In all the systems of false doctrine that kind of that we have to deal with It's always breaking down the person of Jesus Christ breaking down his deity breaking about his biblical characteristics that's how you get away from it all and telling people that you're gonna be saved based upon what you do if only that you would if you can only reach more people if You can only you know

They're saying Lord Lord We Did we not prophesy in your name?

They're responding to Jesus's rejection. And what are they doing on that day of the day of their judgment?

They're presenting their good works to him They're presenting their good works their religious activities as a means to be made, right?

And he says to them depart from me you who practice Lawlessness, why are good works rejected?

Why is Jesus not accepting these things from them? Isaiah chapter 64 verse 6 is we have all become like one who was unclean and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment

We all fade like a leaf and our iniquities like the wind take us away

So Jesus or the scriptures tell us that when we present these good works, which many people will do on the day of their judgment

Who knows how many millions are going to be in the situation where they're presenting their their religious works as a means to be made?

right and And Jesus was rejecting them. These things are less filthy rags to God They're not sufficient in the original language those rags are used menstrual cloths

And I'm sorry, I had to go here and I'm sorry. That is just so absolutely disgusting But my question is why use this imagery?

Why why are the rags seen as this because this is a blood offering presented to God?
