1 Samuel 16, I've just been enjoying a study of the life of David. And we all know that he's a lovely picture of the Lord Jesus. I love how we're introduced to David in 1 Samuel 16. Verse number, I'll just break into the story.
You know that Samuel is coming down to the house of Jesse. Jesse has eight sons. And for some reason, Jesse is going to only call seven. One is going to be left out in the field, the youngest. And we just break in at verse number six.
And it came to pass when, thank you brother. And it came to pass when they were come that he looked upon Elab and said, surely the Lord's anointed is before him. But the Lord said unto Samuel, look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him.
For the Lord seeth not as man seeth. For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. So obviously Samuel must have thought physical size would be the Lord's anointed. But we know that the heart is where God was looking.
Finally, after all the boys, verse 10, again Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, the Lord has not chosen these. And Samuel said unto Jesse, 1 Samuel 16, sorry.
And there remained yet the youngest and behold, he keepeth the sheep. There's how we're introduced to David, marvelous. And Samuel said unto Jesse, send and fetch him for we will not sit down until he come hither.
And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy. That word means red faced. It's the idea of someone who is in the fullness of health. Here's a young lad coming in before this prophet and in the presence of his siblings.
And with all of a beautiful countenance. If you have a Newberry Bible, notice he puts the little W before with all. So that phrase with all of a beautiful countenance, notice what he has in the side with beautiful eyes.
There's something about the eyes of David that captured Samuel. And then we're told he was goodly to look to. There was something about his appearance that you couldn't just look and pass on. You just had to kind of stay there for a minute.
Now, if you can't think of your Lord Jesus, come to the gospel meeting like you might get saved. I mean, there's marvelous. I like these characters of the Old Testament who are just mere springboards, just right away get you to the person of Christ.
This is David as we're introduced to him. And the Lord said, arise, anoint him, for this is he. Newberry will show that the he is emphatic. This is the one, marvelous. Verse 13, then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brethren.
And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went. Now, isn't it amazing? If you were in this family, would you not hold a feast now that your son has been anointed king?
It's almost like it's overlooked. What an event in the life of this man, Jesse. And here's these seven boys looking at this, their younger brother, anointed to be the king of Israel. And it almost just passes over as if nothing happened in the house.
My, how they overlooked Christ. Think of it. There wasn't a created being in heaven that overlooked Christ. What grace, when down to this earth came God's son. He's just a carpenter. No, no, no, he's the creator.
So what a lovely picture you get here. Now, I find this amazing, right on the heels of him being anointed king. Look at what you have, verse 14, the Lord, the spirit of the Lord departs from Saul, an evil spirit comes from the Lord to trouble him.
Verse number 19, wherefore Saul sent messengers onto Jesse and said, send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. Second time we're introduced to David, the sheep come into view once again. And Jesse took an ass and laid him with bread and a bottle of wine and so on.
Verse 21, and David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly. And he became his armor bearer. What an amazing thing. This young boy, just anointed to be the king of Israel. And now he's taking the place of a servant to a man of the flesh, Saul.
What grace.
Adam says, whoa, just a minute there's been a mistake made here.
I was just anointed to be the king. Don't we like it when people recognize who we are? Oh yeah, you're so angelic. Go on, y 'all got the same wicked heart that I got. And when we're overlooked, it's kind of like, oh, just a minute, excuse me.
Here's this young boy, David. What a lovely picture of our savior. I hope, I trust that God will always give us help when we read the gospels. I encourage young Christians who are just newly saved, sometimes you're wondering where to read.
I always tell you for the first year or two years, read a chapter in the Psalms, which will bring before you the greatness of God. And then read a chapter in the gospels, which will bring before you the greatness of Christ.
I'll tell you what, you stay there for a year or two years, you just stay in that loop. Your heart will be warmed as you just meditate upon how great God is and how great the Lord Jesus is. So that's how David is introduced to us in scripture.
Now let's turn over to Matthew, please, Matthew chapter 11. This morning, I've been enjoying this for a while, but if you go through the gospel records, it's good to have a notepad and go carefully through the gospel records.
And I know most people would know this, how the Lord Jesus is introduced to us by the four different gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and King. And these are not just lock boxes, but keep it in your mind.
Matthew is generally going to bring before you the King. A lot of it has to do with the nation of Israel, and there's a lot of significant things in there in that regard. And Mark is the servant, Luke is the man, John is the son of God.
And I think you all know that. If I was to ask you this question, when the Lord Jesus referred to himself, what was the favorite expression that he used? It was always son of man. It's the number one expression, appears over 60 times.
That is why, and knowing this will help you understand, that is why when the high priest upon his arrest asked him, who are you? And he claimed to be the son of man. You will see the son of man coming in the clouds.
And so on and so forth. Do you know what happened next? That high priest ripped his garments and just shouted blasphemy. Why? Because you know where the mind of those Jewish people went? Way back to Daniel seven.
One like unto the son of man, coming to the ancient of days and given to that person is a kingdom that knows no end. Fills the entire earth. There was no doubt that the high priest understood who this carpenter was claiming to be.
And that's exactly who he is. The great king. What was another favorite expression that the spirit of God will give to the Lord Jesus? Son of David. That is tremendous when you start following. Now, Matthew will use that many, many, many more times than any other gospel.
John wouldn't even use it at all. Matthew will use it many times. So I would encourage you go through your Bible and every time son of David, son of David, keys of David, house of David. Everything is going back to David.
Why? Who was the first king of Israel? Saul. Who was the second king of Israel? David. There's a principle in the word of God of the first always brings the curse. The second brings the blessing. Just look at your different children that are born into the Bible.
Look at Cain and Abel. Cain is the oldest. The first, first. Abel, the second, the blessing. Look at Isaac, or Jacob and Esau. This is Esau, the oldest. Jacob is the younger. There's your first and second.
You get that principle brought to its height in 1 Corinthians chapter 15. The first man is of the earth, earthy. The second is the Lord from heaven. So there comes the blessing with the second. So when you come into the gospel of Matthew, he's going to use this expression son of David, which is linking back to the king and the kingdom.
And there's a pivotal point that happens in Matthew 12, which we're gonna read. I want you to notice it just quickly on the heels of a miracle. Look at Matthew chapter 12. And just think of this title, son of David.
Look at what you have in verse number 22. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb, and he healed him in so much that the blind and the dumb both spake and saw. Now, a lot of the accounts in the gospel of Matthew are not in its chronological order.
They are placed in a moral order. There's something being taught by the spirit of God. But if you take time to read a chronological Bible like Reese, there's a number of them there, they will put all the different events, miracles in chronological order.
This miracle happens to be number 12. So chapter 12 of Matthew, and it's number 12, very easy to remember. I want you to look at the response of the people in verse 23. And all the people were amazed and said, is not this son of David?
They got it. This is the king. This is who he is. Look at the response of the religious leaders in verse 24. And when the Pharisees heard it, they said, this fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub, the prince of the devils.
These religious leaders couldn't tolerate this connection. Here were the common people. We would say uneducated. Here were the Pharisees who were educated and they had the word of God. And the people are just looking at the miracles being performed by this so-called carpenter.
And they understood there's more than a carpenter here. This is the son of David. And it just infuriated these religious leaders. No, they said, this miracle that he has just done is being done by the power, the prince of the devils.
What a statement. That we just don't, you need to take time to think on that. Just to fully appreciate how insulting that was. Not only to God, but to Christ, but to the Holy Spirit who was in Christ, empowering him to do all these things.
That's why, dear child of God, when you read a little bit further in verse number 31, wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
I submit this for your consideration. I do not believe the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit can be committed today. I believe this is something unique in this gospel. This was the Spirit of God presenting the king to the nation of Israel.
And it was the Spirit of God that was propelling him to the forefront.
And these religious leaders, with the so-called light of the scriptures,.
They said, no, he's doing it by the Spirit of the devil. And therefore, they were blaspheming the Holy Ghost. Tremendous chapter. Now, here's something else I would submit for your thinking. I want you to look at verse number 28.
There's quite a parable the Lord Jesus gives that he's by the Spirit, by the devil, casting out devils and your children, so I don't want to get involved in that. Verse 28, but if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then, then the kingdom of God has come unto you.
Now, I believe that this was an offer of the kingdom. I believe the king was there. This was an offer of the kingdom to the nation of Israel. I want you to recall how the Old Testament ends in Malachi.
Malachi chapter four, the Spirit of God ends by telling us that Elijah will come. Announcing the coming king.
You go through the gospel records,.
And you take note every time the Lord Jesus refers to John the Baptist, who he was. You know what the Lord Jesus was saying on one occasion? This is the Elijah of the Old Testament. This is him. And if the people had have accepted what John was saying, they would have accepted the king, and therefore the kingdom.
Now, this is such a pivotal point. I want you to notice what happens right at this point. Look at verse number 38. Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
Now, think about that. The Lord Jesus, up until this point, has just given them, including this miracle, 12 signs identifying him as the king of Israel, as the son of God. And here they are asking for, give us another sign.
It shows how hard their heart is. It shows how dark these people are. I have come to realize, after being saved.
For almost 30 years, there's just no point in arguing with people.
Sometimes, in your youth, you think that you can argue people into salvation. You can use your intelligence, and you can argue them into seeing, you know, debate with them, and show them the doctrines of the word of God.
Don't cast your pearls before swine. That's what the Lord would teach. The servant of the Lord, he must not strive. Just act patient, just. There's a work that only the spirit of God can do. These people had steeled themselves to a point where something very unique is gonna happen now in the life of the Lord Jesus.
Do you know what the Lord will do? Turn over a page, chapter 13. Look at what he does in verse number 10. I'll skip over the parable of the sower, but look at verse 10. And the disciples came and said unto him, why speakest thou unto them in parables?
This is the first time you read that. This is the first time the Lord Jesus now starts to use parables. Up until this point, his illustrations, his stories were fairly clear, fairly pointed. Now he's gonna speak in parables.
And I'm not gonna take time, because I'm gonna get down here in about five minutes. The Lord Jesus starts to explain why he's now speaking in parables. We often explain to people only one side of a parable.
We say a parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. That is true. But dear child, a parable is a double-edged sword. I don't explain to you one edge. Do you know what the other edge is? It brings darkness.
These people had gotten to a point.
Where they had rejected, rejected, rejected, rejected, rejected, rejected, rejected 12 times.
And now the Lord says, I will no longer speak clearly. I will speak in parables so that those that had received me will receive more of me. Those that have rejected me, you'll sit there scratching your head wondering what is he saying.
You're going into darkness. This is the pivotal point in the Gospel of Matthew. Look what happens in verse number 46. While, sorry, chapter 12, just back up a little tiny bit there. Kind of jumped ahead of myself.
My wife is always telling me, Scott, slow down. But I can't, my brain, I can't. All right, 46, chapter 12. While he yet talked to the people. Now notice this. Behold, his mother and his brethren, that will be Mary and his half-brothers, stood without desiring to speak to him.
They're outside the house. Just think of that. Then one said unto him, behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without desiring to speak with thee. And he answered and said unto him that told him that, who is my mother and who are my brethren?
Does that sound rude? It's not. Look what he did. The Lord Jesus, verse 49. And he stretched forth his hands toward his disciples and said, behold, my mother and my brethren, for whosoever shall do the will of my Father, which is in heaven, the same as my brother and my sister and mother.
What's happening here? The Lord Jesus is in the house. Go through the Gospel of Matthew. The house is a picture of the nation of Israel. The Lord Jesus has been now rejected by the nation. His literal mother and his literal half-brothers and sisters are outside the house.
What a picture. And all of a sudden, a person comes through the audience and interrupts his little talk and says, your mother and brethren are outside the house. And he says, who is my mother? And then he looks at the audience before him.
That have accepted him,.
Which have actually done the will of the Father in heaven. That's why the Father sent him to be received. And he says, behold, my mother, behold, my brethren, behold, my sisters. What do you read next?
This is so important, chapter 13, verse one. The same day, the very day that all these events took place, the same day went Jesus out of the house, sat by the seaside.
I feel like shedding hallelujah right now.
That's how we came into it. The seaside speaks to the 10 town nations.
The nation, the house, which he turned his back upon because they turned their back upon him. Thank God, the nation of Israel turned their back on the Messiah because we, the Gentiles, are now being brought in.
God is now putting them on the back burner, so to speak. Yes, there's still a history for the nation of Israel, but now uniquely in the dispensation of grace, commencing from the descent of the Spirit of God and off to the rapture.
Isn't it wonderful, dear child of God, that God has allowed the gospel.
To come across that great ocean over here.
To the North Americas? Isn't that an amazing thing?
I've been enjoying recently the whole book of Ephesians. It's an amazing book. We were without God. We were so cut off. We were so far, so at a distance.
We deserve nothing from God at all. Absolute ignorance and darkness. Don't ever think. Oh, I had a right to be saved.
I know you don't think that. I find it amazing. I find it more amazing the older I get that God ever saved me. I can see him saving maybe Mary. Well, no way I can't. He'd be a rascal. I'd fly with him at 9 ,000 feet.
I know him a little better than a lot of people. And if I got to know you, you'd be a rascal too. Every one of us are the same, no matter where we came from. I had the privilege of meeting my brother from Australia there yesterday, and I've never met him before, but I've heard his testimony.
We all have a similar testimony, coming from nothing, so dark, and yet God's grace touched us. That's marvelous. The Lord Jesus in this chapter will eventually go back to the house. There is a future for Israel.
Dispensationalism is the only way to properly understand the Bible, so I leave that for you. Finally, Hebrews. Go to the book of Hebrews, please. I find this to be amazing. There's more to it. We can get one-sided in our appreciation of God's salvation.
It is marvelous what God has done to us, for us, and will do with us, but I want you to learn a little lesson from Hebrews chapter two of just what we presently mean to Christ, the rejected king. Look at Hebrews chapter two.
With this, I'll end. Hebrews chapter two, we'll just break into the chapter there in verse number 12, saying, verse 11, for both he that's sanctified and they who are sanctified are all of one, the idea of family truth, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren.
It's a marvelous thing to be called that by Christ, saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren in the midst of the church while I sing praise unto thee, and again, I will put my trust in him, and again, here's the phrase I want you to think on, behold, now this is Christ saying this, behold, I and the children which God hath given me.
Marvelous. Always take time, dear child of God, to take note of where quotations come from in the Old Testament when they're quoted from the New Testament. Isaiah seven, behold, I and the children which God hath given me.
What's happening to Isaiah the prophet? Isaiah's trying his best to warn the nation of Israel of coming judgment. He's being rejected. Do you know what God does? God comes to him and God starts to comfort him.
Isaiah has a boy presently at his side. I'm not even gonna try to explain to you, try to pronounce their names, because you'll see just how ignorant I am. And then you might think less of me, oh sorry.
And here he is standing, Isaiah the prophet, and he's got one boy beside him, and the meaning of the boy's name is significant, and then he tells him he's gonna have another child, and the meaning of that child is significant.
Do you know what God tells Isaiah?
In the time of your rejection, these two boys will comfort you. That is picked up by the spirit of God and applied now to the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus in the time of his rejection. Right now, you're comforting him.
We comfort him, isn't that amazing? Think of it, you ever thought, sometimes you hear this thing, I'm not worthy, we've been made worthy, thank God. I know we're not worthy, but thank God, God has made us worthy.
And just me by myself, without doing anything, I'm actually a comforter to the Son of God. But that ought to make you live a little different. And in the coming day, when all of the redeemed, I'm backing up now just a little, a verse there in chapter two, Hebrews.
When all the redeemed are surrounded, you know what he says? I will sing. Isn't that marvelous? The Lord Jesus sang before the cross with 11 in the upper room. As a result of the cross, there will be a number, you won't be able to number it.
Think of it, he will stand unique. He'll be surrounded in a coming day, all the redeemed, and such will be the joy that will flood his heart. He will just break forth and become a song leader. We'll join in.
Don't we appreciate our song leaders today? I'm sure we do. Of course, I wish we had one of those, are they called defibrillators on the wall?
You ever see some of our dear saints sing? I'd like to grab the thing off the wall and go, wake you up.
If anyone should ever reach this thing, it should be us, saved on the road to heaven to the son of God.
I'll tell you this, when he sings on that day, you'll have no trouble singing. My land. Don't you love someone who's enthusiastic? I hate someone who depresses me.
I just don't like being around them. Like you're a major downer, man. Like, wake up, Christianity is marvelous.
Let's make people look like a little meanie. You're about to start gospel meetings, right? Be happy. When you bite the mouth of me. It's just my problem. I want what that person has. So may the Lord help us to put our all into it.
It's worth it, dear child of God. He gave us his all, may we give our all to him.
