- 00:09
- God's the one who designed the family, so he gets to be the one to say what it is and how it's supposed to work.
- 00:15
- Welcome to Truth. Love. Parents. Where we use God's word to become intentional, premeditated parents.
- 00:24
- Here's your host, A .M. Brewster. According to Merriam -Webster, a family is, quote, a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head.
- 00:33
- But, is that good enough? Today we celebrate Family Day by figuring out what
- 00:38
- God intended the family to be. In 2011, Katherine Schulten wrote an article for the
- 00:44
- Learning Network of the New York Times, a program targeted at students 13 years and older, entitled,
- 00:50
- How Do You Define Family? In the article, she quoted Lisa Belkin, who did a study on how people perceived the familial trends that were becoming more mainstream even in 2011.
- 01:00
- The following trends were included. More unmarried couples raising children. More gay and lesbian couples raising children.
- 01:06
- More single women having children without a male partner to help them raise them. More people living together without getting married.
- 01:12
- More mothers of young children working outside the home. More people of different races marrying each other.
- 01:17
- And more women not even ever having children. And then the article ended by asking teenagers to weigh in with their thoughts on the modern family.
- 01:26
- Here are some samples. Kaitlyn says, don't classify one family as normal.
- 01:59
- Will wrote, There used to be such a thing as a normal family, but not in this age, because everyone does what they want.
- 02:06
- A normal family is one in which the parents, a man and a woman, help prepare their offspring to go out and survive the real world with some morals.
- 02:14
- Alex said, I love my family. As for having a normal family, I've given up on that.
- 02:20
- There's no such thing. Each family is different. I have six half -siblings and one stepsister, although I don't think that's possible.
- 02:27
- You can't have half a person, so you can't have half a sibling. My family is the bestest. Abigail made an interesting observation when she said,
- 02:35
- Normal families don't exist too much in this age because kids think they are in charge. And Walker wrote,
- 02:42
- The definition of family is falling apart, in my opinion. Today's families spend less and less time together. Most of the parents, that is if they're still together, both work.
- 02:50
- That leaves the kids either at home by themselves or at a daycare with someone besides their parent. Most families don't even have dinner together anymore.
- 02:58
- Family. Both parent and their children coming together and being with each other. I read plenty of other opinions of the family and they all basically said that family can be anyone who you love and who loves you back.
- 03:10
- It doesn't take anything more than that. But is that accurate? I believe if we were to truly understand what the family is, we must ask the creator of the family.
- 03:21
- For the longest time, I used to refer to those annoying little half -animated video images all over the internet as GIFs.
- 03:27
- But then I found out that the creator of the graphic interchange format called it GIF and I immediately started pronouncing it the way he did.
- 03:34
- I disagreed, but, you know, he's the creator, he gets to decide what it's called. In the same way,
- 03:40
- God's the one who designed the family, so he gets to be the one to say what it is and how it's supposed to work.
- 03:45
- Unfortunately, there's no one biblical passage that just outright defines the family. Instead, I want to draw some conclusions from the prominent passages concerning the family and then share my thoughts on how you can turn
- 03:57
- National Family Day into a yearly event with purpose. First of all, according to Genesis and Deuteronomy, a family starts when a man and woman are spiritually united to each other in God as husband and wife.
- 04:11
- This means that the smallest biblical families have three people in them. The family's highest goal is to glorify
- 04:18
- God. They do this by having a robust relationship with Him and by shining His character to all men. The most specific application of this is as each spouse helps the other grow in their relationship with the
- 04:28
- Lord. This family's second highest goal is to steward the world. This occurs when they use and manage all their time, finances, and possessions wisely.
- 04:38
- As the family grows by the addition of children, the same two responsibilities exist, but they take on a new dimension.
- 04:45
- The father and mother are still giving God the glory by growing in Him and helping sanctify their spouse, but they now have the added responsibility of discipling their children.
- 04:53
- And their responsibility to steward creation remains the same. But now the children have been called to fulfill the same responsibilities as their parents.
- 05:01
- They of course will struggle at first, but they too have been called to have a saving relationship with God and be following Him, be a shining light to their homes and to the world, and wisely steward the slice of creation
- 05:12
- God's entrusted to them. And then as the children grow, the family replicates as the children are sent out to start their own families.
- 05:19
- Each child will obviously forever be a son or a daughter, but they've also been commanded to leave their parents and cleave to their spouses in Christ and so create a new three -person family.
- 05:29
- As the children leave, the family returns back to its purest form as husband and wife continue growing in the relationship with each other and with God.
- 05:37
- This is the basic structure of a Christ -honoring family. Are people still a family even when they reject
- 05:43
- God? Of course. From a biological or legal standpoint, they are. However, God didn't just create us to survive,
- 05:49
- He created us to thrive as families. He didn't just create humans to reproduce, control their kids, or let them do whatever they want and then die.
- 05:57
- No, He created the family to be a mortal picture of eternal heavenly realities. We don't have time to discuss them all, but the family is a picture of the
- 06:05
- Trinity, the relationship between Christ and the Church, a model of the best form of discipleship, and a framework for our eternal habitation.
- 06:13
- To be a God -honoring family, we must be so much more than a bunch of people who really like each other or feel connected to each other or who live under one roof.
- 06:21
- We've been called to love each other as God loves us, be actively involved in each other's spiritual lives, and disciple each other.
- 06:28
- This happens over dinner, in the car, sitting on the foot of a bed, at a soccer game, in the grocery store, watching a movie, checking homework, playing in the backyard, making dinner, and in the tub.
- 06:39
- It must because that's what God created the family to be. So as Sunday approaches and many people in the
- 06:45
- U .S. observe National Family Day, how should a family that wants to live up to their full potential celebrate? Well, it is
- 06:53
- Sunday, so start by going to church. That's right, my friends, what could possibly be more important than participating in corporate worship with your family?
- 07:01
- We want our kids to know that for us and our houses, we will serve the Lord, and we want them to know that it's better to be a gatekeeper at the house of God than to dwell in the mansions of the wicked.
- 07:11
- We should teach our children the joy that draws us to church, hungry like David who said, open my eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.
- 07:19
- How else can you celebrate Family Day? Well, you should celebrate it together. This doesn't mean in the same room on separate devices, and this doesn't mean at a friend's house with the parents in the living room and the kids outside.
- 07:30
- This means the parents interacting with the children. Take a walk, go for a bike ride, play a game, cuddle, read out loud to them, play catch, cook out, teach your children to fly a kite, teach them anything.
- 07:40
- Just go get some ice cream, talk about the things coming in the fall. Yes, talk. Definitely talk. I guess families just don't talk enough, and the ones that do too often don't listen enough.
- 07:50
- I know it's agonizing to carry on a conversation with a three -year -old sometimes, but do it. Some people feel the same way about talking with a 13 -year -old, but do it.
- 08:00
- If nothing else, nearly every single parenting passage in the Bible involves us talking and talking about things that really matter.
- 08:08
- If you want to grow into a Christ -honoring family, you need to root yourself in truth, love each other, and talk as much as you can about anything and everything that matters, and a lot of stuff that doesn't too.
- 08:19
- I pray you have an awesome family day, but I pray even harder that every day you're fulfilling the divine calling to be a family that God is pleased to be called your
