00:08
To make a correction to the bulletin, the Old Testament reading today will be in Isaiah 42, verses one through nine.
00:21
Behold, my servant whom I behold, my chosen in whom my soul delights.
00:27
I've put my spirit upon him. He will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice or make it heard in the street.
00:36
A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench. He will faithfully bring forth justice.
00:43
He will not grow faint or be discouraged, till he has established justice in the earth and the coastlands wait for his law.
00:50
Thus says God the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit those who walk in it.
01:01
I am the Lord. I have called you in righteousness. I will take you by the hand and keep you.
01:07
I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open up the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison, those who sit in darkness.
01:18
I am the Lord. That is my name. My glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.
01:25
Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare, before they bring forth,
01:31
I tell you of them. New Testament reading is in Romans chapter 8, starting in verse 31.
01:52
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, with him, graciously give us all things?
02:04
Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn?
02:10
Christ Jesus, the one who died, more than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
02:20
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
02:28
As it is written, for your sake we are being killed all the day long. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
02:35
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
02:41
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God and Christ Jesus, our
02:55
Lord. You may be seated. Good morning. I'm the fifth string pastor, so why have you turned to Psalm 34?
03:20
Psalm 34, a psalm of David. I hope this psalm can, all glory to Christ.
03:48
I've read this psalm over and over and over and again because it feeds my soul. It revives me.
04:01
David's purposes for this psalm were to revive the people of God, to praise
04:07
God for his deliverance from a king that would take his life.
04:15
It's not a case for pleading insanity and how he just must have marveled that God had delivered him that day.
04:24
So let's read through this psalm. I will bless the Lord at all times.
04:30
His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord. Let the humble hear and be glad.
04:38
Oh, magnify the Lord with me. Let us exalt his name together. I sought the
04:43
Lord and he answered me. He delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant.
04:50
Their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.
04:58
The angels of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the
05:05
Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Oh, fear the
05:10
Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack. Young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the
05:19
Lord lack no good thing. Come, oh, children, listen to me and I will teach you the fear of the
05:25
Lord. What man is there that desires life and loves many good days, many days that he may see good, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
05:36
Turn away from evil and do good and seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are towards the righteous and his ears towards their cry.
05:46
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil and to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
05:52
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their trouble. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the
06:01
Christian spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
06:08
He keeps all his bones, not one of them, broken. Affliction will slay the wicked and those who hate righteousness will be condemned.
06:17
The Lord redeems the life of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
06:24
Let's pray together. Father, we want your purpose to be shown in this psalm as it foreshadows the gospel, foreshadows the things that you have completed and that you will do.
06:43
That these promises stand forever, that your word is complete.
06:49
Prepares us, guides us, keeps us. Most importantly, it teaches us of our dependence, that you are our great deliverer.
07:02
You are the one who holds us in your hands. So we ask your blessing on our time in Christ's name, amen.
07:14
The great deliverer, we all know how he's delivered us from our sin.
07:24
We've experienced it. It's been something that's been dramatic. It's like turning a light on in a dark room.
07:34
And at times in our Christian walk, we lose our first love and we need reminding.
07:44
And we look at this psalm, it foreshadows Christ, but specifically the purpose that David had for the people of God were to worship.
07:56
And in that worship, yes, there's promises and also there are things we need to hear time and time again because we're people that need to be instructed.
08:09
People that need to be guided down this narrow path. For what?
08:16
We just sang it, my glory, for Christ's glory.
08:24
I will share my glory with no other. And we're a people of God that's been brought out of darkness into this glorious light, and I don't wanna lose what
08:38
David's proclaiming here, but I want you to set your mind back to the people of God as they sang this song.
08:46
I was almost wanting to sing it, I've heard guys sing it. There's a
08:52
Christian, Shane and Shane. It's a beautiful song because it's very instructional.
09:01
We need instruction, do we not? As God brings us together. So let's just walk our way through this psalm and see.
09:11
It affirms things in our hearts as well as instructs us. I will bless the
09:17
Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the
09:24
Lord. Let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the
09:30
Lord with me. Let us exalt his name together. He calls the people of God to this rejoicing that God has done, not only in David's life, but as corporately.
09:43
As we think of the church and the bride of Christ, we go through things individually, but corporately we come together and say, yes, bless the
09:53
Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
10:00
And the beauty of this is that we can do this completely in Christ because he cleanses our conscience as we confess every
10:10
Sunday and we come before and we remember the glorious gospel. Now we can make our boast in the
10:17
Lord completely because of what he's done. We know he's humbled us.
10:25
Let the humble hear. Those are the ones that God has called out. They are vessels of his grace. Even the people of God have old as David, they saying these are people that God set apart for his glory.
10:39
He said, let us worship together. Let us exalt his name together. And then he goes to this confession.
10:49
I sought the Lord and he answers me. He delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant.
10:56
Their faces shall never be ashamed. If I can step through each step as we go through this and make it real personal, he hears the cry of the broken hearted.
11:22
He heard our cry. We saw the glory of Christ.
11:30
He changed our heart of stone into a heart of flesh. He answered that as we read in Isaiah.
11:44
This is a promise to us and reminder to us that he heard our cry.
11:50
But this is a promise to the broken hearted in our world. As we minister to the loss, and maybe some of you here today are just, you know,
12:01
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not there yet. I'm not there yet.
12:07
Know that he's a God that answers that prayer as you seek and call out to him.
12:18
Those who look to him are radiant. Their faces shall never be ashamed. That goes clear back to the fall, doesn't it?
12:28
There was shame on Adam and Eve as God said, where are you,
12:34
Adam? In the garden, he knew where he was. There's shame in any of our lives.
12:40
If we haven't came to Christ and realized what he does, he removed that, that shame.
12:52
I think of Moses coming down from the mountain. There was a, he'd been in the glory of God and the radiance off of his face.
13:01
What that must have looked like. We have much more in, in our day, in our age than these, than even
13:12
David had. He says, this poor man cried and the Lord heard him.
13:17
He saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the
13:23
Lord encamps around all those who fear him and delivers them. We all have many troubles.
13:33
There's troubles each and every day in our lives. Some not too hard, some real hard.
13:42
Some that just devastate to a point. But do we understand that he is our deliverer?
13:49
He's not gonna remove that as we ask it.
13:55
It's gonna do his set purposes. I was thinking of 2 Corinthians and the last of it and just stay where you're at.
14:03
I'll just read this because it's a reminder of how we, we carry this.
14:11
We carry this, the weight of our life, but God's doing something much greater.
14:18
We do not lose heart though our outer self is wasting away. Our inner self is being renewed day by day.
14:27
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.
14:35
As we look not to the things that are seen, but the things that are unseen.
14:41
For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. There's a process that's going on, people of God, that is transforming us more and the more in the likeness of our risen king.
14:57
And we can't see it, I think, when pain hits, it's just like, when tragedy hits, it's just, you're numb.
15:12
We've all been there. We've lost loved ones. We've been in, we've had sickness. We have to understand this one thing that God is in the midst of it.
15:24
He orchestrates our life in ways that only he can do. Things that we can't understand, but we know he is our deliverer.
15:34
That he has something much greater on the other side for us. In the midst of it all, how can we glorify his name?
15:47
Do we understand he is our deliverer? He is the one who is going to take us through, because the perseverance of the saints is the glory of Christ.
15:59
Go on in verse eight, O taste and see the
16:04
Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. You get this, what
16:11
Andrew's been going through the Psalms, this blessedness of the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked nor stand in the way of sinners.
16:20
But his delight is in the law of the Lord. And on his law, he meditates day and night.
16:28
He's taken the word of God and he's let it ease into his very soul.
16:36
That his thoughts are dictated by what he's taken in. He's humbled because God has brought him to this place.
16:44
I imagine David in that, he goes, I'm gonna die. I'm in the land of Philistines, I took a
16:51
Goliath, I'm gonna die. So he did the thing that he thought outside the box, didn't he?
17:00
But God delivered him. God had a long -term plan, didn't he?
17:07
David's gonna pin these words for my glory. And the people of God will sing and rejoice, not just for David, but that each and every one are vessels of his grace.
17:21
And they've tasted and savored the Lord, the blessings of the
17:27
Lord. When you say taste and see the Lord is good, this is powerful. It gets you thinking.
17:33
We get this description in Ephesians 1.
17:41
Turn there, if you will. Ephesians 1, it brings to mind of this great love that we live in.
17:51
Verse 7 in Ephesians 1, in him, we have redemption through his blood.
18:02
The forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will.
18:22
We had no clue what Christ could do before he changed our heart.
18:28
And we saw this mystery of his will, and we saw his church, and there was such beauty.
18:40
We saw Christ because the bride of Christ, as imperfect as it is, is loving and faithful and steadfast.
18:52
And when unfaithful, we forgive one another.
18:58
And we find this savoring of God's people, and we go, yes, yes.
19:06
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Blessed. We are in a blessed state, brethren.
19:22
This should burden us. I feel it doesn't burden me as much.
19:35
Our co -workers are people we know that are outside of Christ. I fear
19:40
I don't fear it enough. Forgive me, but there's areas in my heart that the
19:53
Lord has to contently work. We get too busy. We taste and see the
20:01
Lord is good. It should put a burden on our heart for our lost loved ones.
20:06
It should put a burden on our hearts for those that we pass by.
20:13
Oh, maybe we're kind and we don't step out in the act of faith and say, you know,
20:25
I need to pursue them for Christ's glory.
20:31
We're in our haven of blessedness. What purpose?
20:38
The purpose is for showing the glory of God. As the people of God sang this song, they were reminded of what
20:54
God continually does, oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, those who fear him have no lack.
21:02
You'll all be provided. Young lions suffer and hunger. Those who seek the
21:08
Lord lack no good thing. Young lions don't know where to get their food yet.
21:19
The adults in the group have to show them where the food is. We have no lack.
21:28
Oh, we get discontented and things because it doesn't go our way. We need deliverance from these because if we don't deal with these issues, and this is where he goes on here, and it's almost like Solomon's writing it, which
21:49
Solomon was David's son. He says, what man there desires life and love many days that he may see good?
21:58
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good.
22:03
Seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are towards the righteous, his ears towards their cry.
22:11
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
22:17
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
22:24
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the Christian spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the
22:33
Lord delivers him from them all. Why are we shocked when trouble comes upon us?
22:43
Sometimes we... He tells us in his word. He tells us in the word.
22:52
If we're reminded of what we read in Romans, that we are more than conquerors, it doesn't look like we're conquerors, does it?
23:01
In the world we live in, where the pride go about, the proud go about and make their proclamations of foolishness and deceit, we don't think we move very fast in the things of the kingdom.
23:24
But God doesn't work that way. God works in a gentle and humble spirit, dealing with people not how they deserve but with kindness, with words that lift up and build up and if possibility to meet them where they're at.
23:48
He again affirms this near to the brokenhearted and saves the
23:56
Christian spirit. What Christ is your spirit?
24:04
Well, if you have the Holy Spirit, you have the desire in your heart of the blessedness that Christ said in the
24:12
Sermon on the Mount, blessed are the pure in heart, they shall be filled.
24:19
Blessed are the merciful. I got to turn there.
24:25
I can't mess up the Lord's Sermon. These things come in mind as we...
24:36
The Scriptures bring...they all meet together, don't they?
24:44
This foreshadowing of Christ, we see it in the old, the completeness we have.
24:52
Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, they shall be comforted.
25:01
See, there's promise in all these lacking areas that we have.
25:10
And Christ speaks this in the Sermon on the Mount. He's preparing the people to know that He is,
25:19
He is the one that had been prophesied about. He's going to show them their sin.
25:24
He's shown them the blessed state and the blessed state is knowing I can't do it without my
25:30
Deliverer. My Deliverer, my Jesus Christ is my Lord.
25:37
I'm not pure in heart, but in Christ I am. And we'll see
25:42
God. Blessed are the merciful, they shall receive mercy.
25:50
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they shall be satisfied. All these things are completed in Christ.
25:59
So we have much more than David had. David was a type of Savior for the people of Israel.
26:06
We have the complete Savior that we live in the midst of. We're all going to have trouble this week.
26:14
Now, that's encouraging, thanks. Thanks. There's pain, there's sickness, it's all around us.
26:23
But He strengthens us for who He is. His words are secure,
26:29
His promises are secure. There's nothing going to move God's promises. Just think about that.
26:37
When He says He's close to the broken heart and you're hurting, He's close to you. Well, you don't feel like it.
26:43
Well, feelings isn't that, it's faith. Faith endures.
26:50
Faith looks at Christ and go, you endured everything for worthless sinners.
26:58
Yeah, there wasn't anything that would draw it, but He purchased the people.
27:05
That day, didn't He? And it's a finished work. He delivers them from them all.
27:14
We see a glimpse of after the crucifixion.
27:20
He keeps all His bones, not one of them broken. It's a prophecy in the middle of the
27:25
Psalms. Affliction will slay the wicked and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
27:34
Those who hate us will be condemned, but we're still called to love them. We're to love our enemy.
27:40
It's a powerful thing. It's a supernatural thing. We can't do it by, oh,
27:46
I'm just going to love my enemy. No, Christ does. God the
27:51
Father shows that He sends the rain on the unrighteous as well as the righteous. We're not really righteous.
27:58
Christ makes us righteous. Because all of us couldn't sit in here if we wore sin on our shoulder, could we?
28:07
We're imperfect. But God doesn't call the perfect. The proud,
28:13
He says, I didn't come for the proud. I came for the sick.
28:21
And we were sick of sin, weren't we? We need to be reminded of these things.
28:26
This Psalm is always impermanent in me, just the glory of Christ.
28:33
There's a lot of practical things that we can learn from. Our blessed state.
28:39
What should we do? We were always teaching our kids, seek peace and pursue it.
28:45
You guys are beating your brothers and sisters. When you have families, you're the toughest on the ones you love, right?
28:59
Teach your children to seek this peace and pursue it. Oh, we want deliverance, don't we?
29:08
We want deliverance. It's coming. It's coming, but not in our timing, in God's set timing.
29:15
As we persevere through life, as we understand, as David penned this with the
29:22
Holy Spirit's inspiration, it's just a beautiful thing because God was giving it to us.
29:33
And it's for our instruction. I love the Psalms. I wish
29:40
I could sing it. I'll do it on my own. But I know there's things in our life that we need deliverance from.
29:57
I know there's personal sins and there's deep, deep areas. You know, it's like,
30:04
I know pride's still in my heart. I know that I need to be more loving to the unbelieving world that, you know, when
30:14
I watch the news and people make no sense, I've got to realize that they're lost in their sin.
30:21
If I hold the word of God up and it doesn't match, it should disturb us.
30:28
But how can we, in this area of ours, there's a guy on Fox that Walters World, he goes, this is my world.
30:37
Well, we all have that. Has anybody ever seen that? Jesse Walters, he goes, this is my world.
30:43
Well, we all have these areas in our life that we say, okay,
30:49
I can't do much across the world. You know, we can do things. I can Jordan and support our missionary.
30:56
But what can I do right here? What can I do right here? Well, I'm gonna meet some people today, maybe business or pleasure or just relationships.
31:06
You know, I'm gonna pursue that by praying, being faithful to the
31:12
Lord in this and say, Lord, open the door that they would see the glory of Christ in my kindness, in my actions, in my words.
31:20
May truth come through everything I do. The Lord will complete this task.
31:32
You know, when we think of the consummation and we go to Revelations and we see that promise, you know, there'll be a new earth.
31:54
I gotta find it first and slip this in. Then I saw a new heaven and new earth.
32:05
And the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. The sea was no more.
32:11
And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
32:21
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.
32:30
He will dwell with them and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them as their
32:38
God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more.
32:45
Neither shall there be mourning or crying or pain or any more for the former things have passed away.
32:56
If we can look ahead by faith and just, we can't even imagine it.
33:08
As the unexpected things come in your life, these coming days and weeks, prepare yourself and guard yourself.
33:20
Put that, you know, what Paul says, Ephesians, that belt of truth around you.
33:26
You be ready, be ready, be faithful, be faithful to your family, faithful to the church.
33:38
And we will be a people set for his glory. Why? Because he is the one that has done it all.
33:48
And he will not share his glory with any other. You think the world in all its decorations is anything?
34:00
We have no clue what the glory of the Lord will be like.
34:06
He gives us little tidbits. As we taste, as we savor in our communion table, as we see lives transformed and baptized, these are just tastes.
34:23
As we fellowship with one another and we know God is with us, these are all things that should satisfy us in a way.
34:33
And if they don't, we should confess, Lord, I'm cold hearted, I'm cold hearted.
34:40
If I don't love the brethren, I don't love God. Guard your heart, it's a wellspring of your life.
34:51
Seek one another, be with one another. That's the community of believers is learn one another.
35:02
If you don't know somebody in the body, learn them, give them a call. Say, hey,
35:08
I've never really talked to you. May God be ever praised.
35:14
Let's pray. Father, we're thankful for your word that revives our soul.
35:23
Father, thank you for just guiding me, loving me, and I see this body of Christ that you are so faithful to.
35:34
Father, I praise you. I praise you and bless you at all time because you are worthy of our praise,
35:43
Father. You deserve so much more. May we continually lift you up in all we do, in Christ Jesus' name, amen.
