Ten Facts About A Charlie Brown Christmas

Ten facts about a Charlie Brown Christmas you probably didn't know. Pastor Gabe's blog for December 9th, 2025. Sixty years ago, on December 9th, 1965, a Charlie Brown Christmas debuted on CBS. It was the first time the beloved comic strip, Peanuts, created by Charles Schultz in 1950, was ever presented in animation.

Dozens of cartoons later, a Charlie Brown Christmas remains the perennial favorite for millions of people worldwide. The Christmas special continued to air on CBS every year until the year 2000, when it was bought by ABC and aired on that network until 2019.

And all 55 consecutive showings of a Charlie Brown Christmas broadcast the true story of the birth of Jesus Christ as read in Luke chapter 2. I was born in the 80s, 15 years after a Charlie Brown Christmas debuted, but because it was still on TV every year, it became a tradition in the Hughes household.

Eventually a relative recorded it for us on VHS, so we didn't have to wait for that one night of the year it would air on TV. We could watch it whenever we wanted. It was probably because of a Charlie Brown Christmas that Peanuts became my favorite comic strip as a kid.

When my dad brought home the newspaper and I turned to the funnies, it wasn't Garfield or Family Circus or that Dagwood character I was looking for. I wanted to read Peanuts. A close second was Calvin and Hobbes, followed by B .C. by Johnny Hart.

Now a dad with children of my own, we like to watch a Charlie Brown Christmas as a family. The Peanuts movie from 2015 is also a family favorite, and we make that one a part of our holiday viewing as well.

This being the 60th anniversary of the beloved classic, I've been meaning to do this as a video, but until I get that done. Here are some fun facts about this holiday favorite. Before getting to my list, I have three trivia questions for you.

See if you know the answers before I get to them. Number one, the sale of which item tanked after this Christmas special? Number two, which two characters influential to the plot never have a line of dialogue?

And number three, what color was Snoopy's doghouse? Do you think you know the answers? Here are ten facts about a Charlie Brown Christmas you may not have known. Number ten, all of the children are played by children.

Real Children Voice the Peanuts Cast

This is actually a pretty unique element to a Charlie Brown Christmas. When CBS made a deal with Schultz to turn his popular comic strip into an animated television special, Schultz insisted that the Peanuts kids had to be voiced by real kids.

Back then, most child characters in cartoons were voiced by adult actors who pitched their voices up or talked like babies. Boys were often played by women, as is still the case. For example, Nancy Cartwright has been the voice of 10-year-old Bart Simpson for nearly four decades.

Schultz said no, his child characters had to be voiced by actual children. And the voices that you hear were not professional child actors. Lee Mendelsohn and Bill Melendez, producers of A Charlie Brown Christmas, actually toured local schools looking for kids who sounded authentic.

And that's exactly what they got. The mumbles and stumbles you may have noticed in the dialogue all add to its authentic charm. Every line of dialogue in the show was recorded in a single day, and none of the children are named in the closing credits.

No Laugh Track on Peanuts

9. No Laugh Track. Another of Schultz's demands was that the show could not have a laugh track. This was unthinkable to studios back then. Executives believed that any show with humor needed to be presented with cues of laughter, or else the humor would be lost on American viewers and just be awkward.

So every comedy had to be presented as if it had been filmed in front of a live audience, even if it obviously wasn't. The Andy Griffith Show is an example of this. This was also common for cartoons. Most Hanna-Barbera tunes like Yogi Bear and The Flintstones had a laugh track.

Schultz said not for Peanuts. The humor had to feel natural. CBS groaned over this decision, but in the end, Schultz was right. It's hard to believe a Charlie Brown Christmas would have endured so long with such authentic charm if it had an annoying laugh track.

Vince Guaraldi's Jazz Score and Christmas Time Is Here

8. Vince Giraldi's Famous Soundtrack Happened Because of a Cab Ride. Producer Lee Mendelsohn caught a taxi in San Francisco when he heard playing on the radio Cast Your Fate to the Wind by Vince Giraldi.

At the time, Mendelsohn was working on a documentary called A Man Named Charlie Brown about Charles Schultz, and he wanted Giraldi's music for the score. The documentary never aired, but Mendelsohn was left with a bunch of delightful jazz tracks he thought were perfect for their animated special.

The demos were played for Schultz, who loved them instantly. He thought the music was a great fit and gave his approval. Giraldi was called back in to do some more music with a more Christmas feel, including the music for the song Christmas Time Is Here, which was written for the show.

The lyrics were done by Bill Melendez, and the song is sung by Melendez's son's sixth grade class. By the way, that fun jazz gig, often called the Charlie Brown theme, is actually titled Linus and Lucy.

CBS Thought the Special Would Flop

CBS Thought It Was Going to be a Flop. When viewing the rough cut of the show, Mendelsohn and Melendez thought they had ruined it. The studio was horrified. No professional actors? No laugh track? What's with the blatant religious message?

They even hated Vince Giraldi's soundtrack. CBS executives were certain this would not go over well with audiences, but to their astonishment, it was a smash hit. The reviews were glowing, and the ratings spectacular.

It went over so well, they acted like they always knew it was going to be a hit and immediately contracted the producers for more holiday specials. The next year, the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program, which Melendez and Mendelsohn accepted with Charles Schultz.

Part of what worked in the producers' favor was that the production of the show came down to the wire. They finished at the last possible minute. CBS had already scheduled it and had sponsorship dollars behind it.

Recalling the experience, Mendelsohn later said that had they finished the production any earlier, he thinks CBS never would have aired it. 6. Ads for Coca-Cola were animated into the show. When you watch the show today, you might notice a few unusual edits.

For example, in an opening scene right at the title, we see the children are ice skating. Snoopy the dog grabs Linus' blanket and catches Charlie as well. He swings Charlie and Linus around, launching them both into the air, and we see what happens to Charlie, but not to Linus.

That's because originally Linus crashed into a billboard of Coca-Cola, who sponsored the.

Show.

That's right, a show that rails on the commercialization of Christmas had a Christmas commercial built right into the animation. In later years, when Coca-Cola dropped their sponsorship, that part of the special was edited out.

The Aluminum Christmas Tree Market Collapsed

5. The show killed the sale of aluminum Christmas trees. Aluminum trees were really popular in the United States from the mid -50s, when they were first manufactured, to 1967, when the sale of aluminum trees was killed by a Charlie Brown Christmas.

As the name says, an aluminum tree was made out of aluminum. They looked futuristic, and many Americans in the 1960s even thought of them as a status symbol. They were advertised as reusable and fireproof.

There had been several stories in the news of lights causing Christmas trees to catch on fire. An aluminum tree wouldn't have that problem. That is, until a Charlie Brown Christmas came along and torched the aluminum Christmas tree market.

It was part of the plot that aluminum trees are commercial and cold and not in the spirit of Christmas. Charlie Brown picks the saddest tree on the lot because it's authentic. The next year, sales of natural trees skyrocketed, and the aluminum Christmas tree would soon be no more.

Lucy Calls Charlie Brown by His First Name Only Once

This is the only time Lucy refers to Charlie Brown as simply Charlie. If you're familiar with many of the Peanuts cartoons, including the 2015 movie, then you'll know that the character of Lucy always refers to Charlie Brown by his first and last name, except in a Charlie Brown Christmas.

There's one part of the show where she simply calls him Charlie. It's right around her rant about Christmas being a big commercial racket.

Snoopy and Linus' Blanket Never Speak

Two of the most memorable characters never speak a line of dialogue. Snoopy became a hugely popular character through A Charlie Brown Christmas, even though he never says a word. He is, after all, Charlie's dog.

Snoopy does make sounds in the show, voiced by Bill Melendez and sped up to pitch higher and not sound like a human. But there's another character in the show that drives the plot and never says a word.

That is, Linus' Blanket. Schultz would illustrate the blanket and think of it as a character. Linus drops the blanket when he tells the story of the birth of Jesus. He even wraps Charlie's Christmas tree in the blanket at the end.

Snoopy's Doghouse Was Blue

Snoopy's doghouse was blue. Snoopy's red doghouse is practically a cultural icon, but the first time it was presented in color, it was blue, especially in A Charlie Brown Christmas. The reason is because red was notoriously difficult to animate.

A lot of red tended to shine outside the lines on television sets in the 1960s, so originally Snoopy's doghouse was blue. It's also one of the few times you see Snoopy's doghouse from the front. As in most products and media, including the comic strip, you only see his doghouse from the side.

Charles Schultz Insisted on the Gospel in Luke 2

1. Charles Schultz demanded the Christmas story, according to Luke, had to be there. Schultz had three demands. The kids had to be voiced by real kids, there could not be a laugh track, and at the top of his list of demands was that the message of the gospel as proclaimed by the angel in Luke 2 had to be there.

It was a central part of the story.

Abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night, and lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them. They were sore afraid, and the angel said unto them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you, Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill toward men.

That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.

It is by the providence of God that the network even agreed to this. Again, when they saw the finished product, they thought there was no way it could work. But it did. And it has. With a story as timeless as any network Christmas special, the true story of Jesus.

Christmas Traditions Are Not the Gospel

In conclusion, I love Christmas. It has become my favorite holiday, especially since becoming a dad. The traditions that you make with your friends and family can be wonderful. But traditions such as these are not the gospel.

Even the holiday of Christmas itself is a tradition. There's nothing in the Bible that tells us we must celebrate Christmas. But we must remember that Jesus came into the world to save sinners, 1 Timothy 1 .15.

Whatever Christmas traditions you enjoy, whether it's decorating the Christmas tree, seeing the lights, visiting family, opening presents, or watching your favorite Christmas special, remember at the center of it all is the birth of a Savior who would save His people from their sins for all who would believe in Him.
