Looking at the Son! Hebrews 1:8-9

Hebrews as Biblical Theology and Eschatology

We're gonna continue tonight in Hebrews chapter 1. We're gonna try to do in this first Program verses 8 through 10. I was thinking about this Dan. I know one of the reasons why you wanted to go to Hebrews you and I have been in some Old Testament books we've walked through those and our.

Our emphasis or one of the things that we were looking at is is the eschatology side of things. And I knew Hebrews. You were kind of drawn to Hebrews because of eschatology. And maybe you can explain that a little bit more.

This is kind of a going to Hebrews. It's kind of a natural flow. I guess is what I was gathering from you.

Yeah Hebrews it I don't know if it's directly related to Eschatology, but it definitely has some some major implications for it. Mainly because Hebrews is one of the greatest examples of scripture interpreting scripture that we have.

In the Bible, there's so many passages quoted. It's pretty much a biblical theology that runs. No through all of the Old Testament picking up themes that are laid down. Creation revelation from God to man.

The even going into things of the high priest the Old Covenant system how that affects us how that that deals with us as as as believers. How it was affecting these Hebrew Believers at the end of the the Old Covenant ages the things were switching over into the New Covenant.

No, how does how does that affect them? How does? You know, how does all of this work together? So it yeah, it uh it. Definitely helps because it lays out a hermeneutic that we should follow as we're studying the rest of Scripture, right?

Mainly, I guess the biggest part of that would be a Recognition that since the Holy Spirit is the ultimate author of Scripture and because we don't have a name to put to Hebrews. Let me Paul but You may disagree.

There's no real name. We don't really know. But because the Holy Spirit is the ultimate author of Scripture. We know that whatever is said about these passages is the correct interpretation of them. So we should follow that and we should even read the Old Testament the way that the writer to the Hebrews tells us.

What it means? Oh, yeah as he as the Holy Spirit explains it to us through the writer to the Hebrews. We should be able to understand it through the old in the Old Testament as well.

That's and that's a good hermeneutics lesson as well. Hermeneutics is just what the art and science of studying Scripture, right? So that's that's a good hermeneutics lesson. Learn learn from Hebrews.

How to read Hebrews and how Hebrews interprets the Old Testament. Just a lot of good hermeneutics in there. Tell me what you think about these thoughts kind of to me related to the question that I asked you.

I Don't know if you're still listening to that podcast that that we had mentioned that we're mutually listening to. Separately the podcast that should not be named. The podcast that shall not be named at this time.

I just just listen to the most recent one on the way to work. Was it yesterday or today? Okay. I.

Think yes. Yes. I am presently. I'm either one or two behind. I can't remember but but he's using Terminology that that I have I've not heard before. But I like it because I mean, of course it fits with With that eschatology with with that line of thinking so he uses the the phrase the eschatology of Israel, you know, we always talk about we're partial preterist that preterist just means past and partial means.

Some or most of the prophecies that we see in the in the Bible were fulfilled and happened already in the New Testament in the by 70 AD and. And from the way we see from what we see in Scripture the way we see it that this there was an overlap Lapping period between the end of the Old Covenant and the beginning of the New Covenant.

There was this overlapping period and so Hebrews along with the other books of the New Testament, but with with Hebrews it's going to be with in that overlapping period.

Right, right not only between the in the overlapping period but trying to explain to folks who were Solidly within the Old Covenant in the nation of Israel How are you now going to be a part of the New Covenant?

Right? No, what is no. What's the basis of your Entrance into that Covenant and how are you going to be saved? Yeah, and how to fight that temptation from going back. Right, but what's it? What's at stake if if I hold on to what has no actually truly been revealed to me by God while rejecting Something else that well, it's actually really truly revealed to you by God, right, right.

So that's how it related How I could articulate while we were going to Hebrews. And I think it's really relevant to articulate it that way. One of the other things that I wanted to bring up before we got started was a Little portion of what we talked about a little bit last night after off air after the the laborers podcast just.

And you can probably explain it I can give you my thoughts and you can take what I say and make it more clear. But it was what I was saying last night about How we understand what Hebrews is doing with Jesus so The comment that I made last night is we're not For instance, for example, we're not taking Moses and and we're not and taking Jesus on the other hand and trying to See how many championships each one has and figure out which one is the goat, right?

I mean, I mean, yes Hebrews is saying Jesus is better than this is why you shouldn't go back to the Old Covenant, but it's it's more than that and I just have a hard time articulating How to how to understand that how to grasp that concept.

Well.

If you if you look at certain people who debate Frequently they'll put some of their stronger arguments towards the front Hebrews does that I mean just right right out of the gate calls Jesus. God talks of his divine nature his Securing the purification for sins.

You know making not making purification for sin sitting down at the right hand of the father so from there, I mean like It's no, I mean it sounds weird to say it's all downhill from from there. But really what what's happening is Instead of being held up and say let's compare the two saying Since Christ is God.

This is why everything that you've seen throughout the Old Covenant makes sense and is fulfilled in Christ. So when you hold them up next to Moses, you're not holding them up to Moses to compare Christ and Moses you're comparing Christ as he's revealed himself and Christ as he was been revealed to us through Moses.

So yeah, it's not that Christ was speaking out of two sides of his mouth Moses speaking one thing and Christ speaking another and Christ is better. It's that God had given words to Moses to say to us and Those were to foreshadow and tell of his coming and then when he gets here He's fulfilling the words and expounding upon them to show Christ supremacy over all things Though it's a it's a further unveiling so to speak.

So he's not only superior But it's fuller and better he is superior supreme because of his nature not because of a Comparison that it's apples and oranges. Yeah. Yeah, and I think that's what Peter was doing.

On the Mount of Transfiguration when he says it's good for us to be here. Let me let me build a booth. Let me build it this tent for each of you. But that's how he was trained up to view Rabbis teachers prophets Lawgivers, that's how he was, you know brought up trained to view them on the on this same level playing field, but but God comes in this cloud and he says This is my son.

So by nature.

They're in different categories. Yeah, and Peter, I think he probably had he probably said that before he realized he said it. Well, I don't know I don't know what I would say. No say something. You see you see the Transfigured Christ Moses who wrote the law that you've been studying.

Yeah, and there's telling of Christ and then I mean. Then you hear God speak from heaven. I mean, what are you gonna say? I'm gonna say something dumb like 100

That's that's where I'm going with it. Well, I feel like I'm a lot like Peter. I'll say it. I'm like.

All it was good. I probably said that better. Oh.

The Son Is Greater Than the Angels

So so Hebrews chapter 8, let me let me read that first verse. And we'll apply all that as we continue through Hebrews. What now. Hebrews chapter 1 verse 8. Okay. I probably said it wrong. Oh, you did.

Hebrews chapter 1 verse 8. But of the Son he says your throne of God is forever and ever and The righteous scepter is the scepter of his kingdom.

Forgot you said you're going to verse 8 and only 8. Yeah. Yeah just a good.

Whatever you get a chance. If you want to hit on this. This is something that I want to look into more and I don't feel qualified yet to to speak on it. I mean, I've I've looked at it before I've heard people talk about it, but you know that.

The fourth word there is son and you have you have Jesus Spoken of and he speaks of himself in these terms but the Son of Man and the Son of God and Jesus says this is my son, so if you're not comfortable speaking to this, you know, we can come back to it later, but Son of Man and Son of God.

What do those two? Terms mean. What do they mean when they say that? Well.

Son of man came from the book of Daniel, I believe. But the term son of son of God or him being called the son is is Defined for us here in in this passage. I mean a little bit earlier verse 5 It says for You are my son today I have begotten you and that comes from Psalm 2.

Psalm 2 is then quoted again in Acts 13 and verse 33 where he makes the point that it's talking about the the resurrection so This is where it gets a little. It may be a little bit difficult to grasp because We have to remember that God is outside of time.

Christ is not bound by the constraints of time that he is for instance Jesus is called the the the Lamb of God that was slain before the foundations of the world now. We know that he was slain in Jerusalem.

You know after after much history and before other history happened and yet he is said to have been Slain before the foundation of the world we as believers are said to be seated presently with Christ in the heavenlies.

And so when it's talking about son and it speaks of resurrection. This is all part of the the plan of redemption that that God had from all of eternity. So at least in one aspect there may be others I'm just speaking to what's what's here.

That when it says that he's begotten when he is called son when he's no Inheriting the name that's much greater than the angels. When he's higher than them. It's because of the resurrection him being called the the firstborn his resurrect his Securing a redemption for humanity we look down in verse Verse 6 of the same it says and when and when he again brings the firstborn into the world.

He says and let all the angels of God worship him so he is the firstborn of all creation. He is the He's the first one with a glorified humanity to write raise up from the dead. Whereas the rest of us have to wait For a resurrection where we will also be raised from the dead Glorified with glorified bodies.

He's the firstborn who has secured salvation Made purification for sins and then sat down at the right hand of the Father in heaven. So that's at least from this passage the term son has to do with the resurrection and there's There's another place in you.

Oh. When he brings the firstborn into the world. So if he's the firstborn already being brought into the world it also has to do with his incarnation so you're talking about his incarnation his Resurrection.

He's the firstborn. It doesn't mean that he's not eternal. It just means that All of these things were true throughout history they've been planned out by God and This is the outworking of his plan. He's called son because that is his role.

That's his. That's what he's doing as.

The second person of the Trinity. Well, I'm glad you made that distinction because I think. People have been confused over the over the centuries and heresies have come forth from it but but when you hear people here you talk about the resurrection is the key here and so did he.

Did he become the son or become the son of God? Only after the resurrection. No, he's always been the son of God. He's always been the son of man. He's always been in that role. It was just like you're talking about this is when it was played out and hit.

This is right. When it was played out he was the first.

Right that was something that John MacArthur had said he said that Jesus became the son at one point. In fact in his commentary on Hebrews He said that and he has since gone back and said no, that's not right.

I was wrong and changed his tune. But look looking at verse 8 when it says of the Son you were thinking of resurrection incarnation of the Christ has come to secure salvation for mankind. He says. You're a throne.

Oh God is forever and ever and the righteous scepter is The scepter of his kingdom. It comes from from Psalm 45 Right 45 45 verses 6 and 7 now if you look at If you look at that passage Just back up into verse 3 it says Gird your sword on your thigh a mighty one In your splendor and your majesty and in your majesty ride on Victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and right righteousness.

And let your right hand teach you awesome things. Your arrows are sharp. The people's fall under you your arrows are in the heart of the Kings enemies. Then comes our Verses your throne. Oh God is forever and ever.

Scepter of uprightness is a scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God your God has anointed you with the oil of joy above your fellows. So what you have there is is language of the destruction of enemies and the putting down of those who are in rebellion in Christ's kingdom which is Incredible.

Of course I lost lost my place. That happens when you're going back and forth there we go. So when you come back into the book of Hebrews It says the angels are called his winds and his ministers are a flame of fire.

But of the Sun it said your throne. Oh God is forever and ever. It's he's Not just a wind to carry around the Word of God. He's not just a fire as to be used as a tool of God. He's the one Defeating his enemies.

He's the one putting them down and putting them under his feet which contrasts absolutely beautifully and Brings the whole picture together when you look at verse 9 verse 9 is Says you have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness.

Therefore God your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions. That's found there in in Psalm 45 6 and 7 but it's also You find it in Isaiah 61 Where he says the Spirit of the Lord of the Lord God is upon me.

Because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners. To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God.

To comfort all who mourn to grant those who mourn in Zion Giving them a garland instead of ashes oil of gladness instead of mourning The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting so they will be called oaks of righteousness.

The planting of the Lord that he may be glorified. So while it said of The angels that their ministers of winds and flames Of the Sun it said he is the one who puts enemies down and Upholds those who are his so at the same time sin is being completely dealt with either being dealt with in Punishing his enemies or by taking that punishment upon himself.

Which is why it's so important that it calls him son because in son. We have the understanding of Incarnation where he's come to earth. We have the idea of Resurrection, but we also see up here back in verse Three.

When he had made purification of sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high. So before he went out conquering his enemies I mean Once again time is you know fluid with with God he Secured salvation for those who would be saved I mean so he's it's it's a Set it's it's almost like it's it's one action that comes down in two different ways all son all sin is being punished and in the process Some of humanity is being punished with their sins and the humanity is hitting Christ Whose sins have been placed upon him their sins have been paid for and forgiven so in the in the resurrection Him being the firstborn we being the Late later born.

I guess I don't know. I don't know what that second born the second born third born the middle child. Oh goodness. I hope not.

Oh But going back to some of the terms that we're using before sure looking at this passage And of course follow along with what you were saying we were talking about Moses and Jesus being in different categories and if you this is how I think if if I'm thinking about category as a shape and It's a circle then Hebrews here is Expanding that circle in Describing the the category of who Jesus is.

So the beginning of our say but of the Son he says and Then here's here's more of who Jesus is right your throne. Oh God Right is forever and ever so we're learning about more of who Jesus is and that that circle That category is broadening our understanding of who he is and and then Going off what you were talking about some of the things that you were saying this Character and nature and Plan and how he's how he's operating This is how he's operating in the world It's kind of like the gutter guards.

This is this is the boundaries. This is how God we're seeing how God operates in his world. And so therefore Kind of the application for us would be okay. Well if I'm outside of these boundaries Then I need to I need to get back in If I'm in his kingdom if I'm a part of this operation part of this kingdom and this is how he operates I need to see myself operating with within these boundaries and in parallel to that I'm Looking at after all this is said and done Describing his his kingdom and his his power by talking about his scepter And how he loves righteousness and hates lawlessness, you know, they're there's the boundaries.

That's where he is. Then it says Therefore God your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness of above your Companions so this this is not only his boundaries. This is not only how he operates, but this is what brings him joy.

So if we want to know how to operate and and be pleasing to God Then we will operate according to his boundaries and how he he's functioning and operating in the world Because that's what's bringing him joy.

That's what's pleasing him.

And that's what that's what I'm seeing here in these passages. Yeah, and what's really neat is that mankind isn't necessarily directly in view here right because we're we're being talked to but what's what's in view here is.

Here are these angels these beings the ones that frighten us the ones that you know ancient cultures have turned into gods and you know Zeus and Hermes and all the rest of them. These you know UFOs aliens little green men.

But They they have been so highly thought of and so scary to people Over Over the years that they've concocted different things about what they are. We understand that the spiritual realm is is bigger than we are that we are.

The angels are more much more capable of certain things than we are they're much more spectacular and beautiful in some ways than we are and we are. Being told that the one that has come to save us makes them look like Pipsqueaks, yeah, he makes them look like little green men like little Um Like like little caricatures like little toys of what God really is so When when we see something so much greater than ourselves Being Shown to be nothing in the face of who Christ is it shows us the Majesty grandeur and kingship of Christ, but it also shows us the incredible grace that has been bestowed on us because he condescended and made purifications for sin because He's chief.

He's supreme. He's amazing and while some will fall and some will be Destroyed because they fall on. They will not Repent they won't believe they will not Turn to to Christ and give up their lawlessness.

He has made a way of salvation for mankind and that way is that he came and died on the cross for the sins of men. He laid in the grave for three days. He got back up and then sits at the right hand of the father Ensuring that everything that he has accomplished is now being applied in the world.

That we live in and it's just a beautiful thing.

And and I know I was making application for us. Sure. And when what I was talking about but and you're right. This is speaking that the direct subject is is Jesus being compared to you know.

Angels here first in chapter one. You weren't wrong. I just filled in the gap, right? Yeah.

Where I was going was that the the more direct audience? We're not we're not the direct audience. The direct audience would be the Intended on the first century audience. I would say that the Hebrews who he's speaking to Saying don't go back so that these boundaries are Relevant to them as well.

Here's how God operates this is how he's functioning. Don't go outside these boundaries ie don't go back to the Old Covenant. Right. Yeah.

Right, because if you go back to the Old Covenant, you're going back to the angels you're going back to right going back to Things that did not come from heaven become incarnate die on the cross for your sins lay in the grave and then raise up.

Three Days later, those things are not seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven and those things will not save you. But the things that they point to the thing that they point to will and that thing is Jesus Christ.

The Gospel Call and Closing Prayer

All right, and as these verses and we didn't make it to our our last verse again But we're gonna keep walking through these these verses one by one If the Lord allows but but as Dan has said tonight These things have been Settled from eternity past that that Jesus is the Son the Son of Man the Son of God.

He's the Messiah He's eternal. He's always been he is the great I am and his his Coming Or wrapped up in the phrase the the lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world That's the gospel wrapped up in a nutshell that that God's plan was to send Jesus his son the great I am God himself to Bear the sins bear the wrath of God that that we could not bear ourselves what a marvelous and Wonderful mercy and grace toward us his his enemy.

We became his enemy By our own fruition by our own choice and Continue to sin and we would continue to sin Rejecting that grace and mercy. We're not for God working in our hearts. So we want to praise him for that and if you have not responded to That gospel call we would encourage you we would plead with you to respond to that gospel call The good news is that Jesus died for sinners for those who would put their faith and trust in him.

So tonight Today whenever you're listening or watching this video Repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Then will you close us in prayer? Sure.

Dear Heavenly Father. We thank you for today for all that you've given to us, especially for your son who you've sent to Forgive us of our sins to die on the cross to take what was what was ours upon himself and to grant us Righteousness that was his.

We pray that you would Put that message in the hearts of people all over you all over the world. And you would lead us to a deeper knowledge and relationship with you in Christ's name. We pray. Amen. Amen.
