DAY 211: Isaiah 54–58

Welcome to 5-Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today's July the 30th and we'll be looking at Isaiah 54 through 58. Now yesterday, Isaiah reached the heart of the gospel, the servant was despised, pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, and made a guilt offering for sinners.

And yet through his suffering, he justifies the many, he gathers the nations, and he sees the fruit of his work. Well today, Isaiah shows us that fruit. The barren woman sings, the tent expands, covenant peace is secured, the thirsty are invited freely to the waters, foreigners and eunuchs are welcomed among God's people, true worship produces justice and mercy, restoration and Sabbath delight.

The Fruit of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah 54

Now the servant creates a new covenant people, and we see that in Isaiah 54, which opens with an astonishing command, shout for joy, O barren one. The woman who had no children is told to enlarge her tent because her offspring will spread to the right and to the left, and her descendants are going to possess the nations.

The Lord identifies himself as her husband and redeemer. Though Zion experienced judgment, God promises everlasting loving kindness and a covenant of peace that will not be removed. Isaiah 55 then issues a universal invitation.

Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. The Lord calls people to seek him while he may be found, and he extends David's sure mercy towards the nations. Chapter 56 even widens the covenant community.

Foreigners are going to be able to join and come to the Lord, and eunuchs, once excluded from Israel's ordinary inheritance, are now promised a place and a name within God's house. The Lord declares that his house is going to be called a house of prayer for all the peoples, and yet chapters 56 and 57 also condemn Israel's corrupt watchmen, their leaders who are entrenched in idolatry and spiritual adultery.

True Worship and the Exposure of False Fasting

But then finally, Isaiah 58 exposes the false fasting. The Lord calls instead for worship that produces righteousness, mercy, repair, and delight in his Sabbath. So as you read today, I want you to ask the following question.

What kind of people does the suffering servant create? Isaiah 54 through 58 answers that his sacrifice doesn't produce passive spectators. Grace creates a faithful bride, gathered worshipers, merciful neighbors, and people who delight in the Lord.

Obedience is not the price of redemption, it's the fruit of it. And in that way, the central tension in all of this is between the grace that we receive and the grace that is embodied. Isaiah 55 couldn't make grace clearer.

The thirsty are going to come without money. They receive what they could not afford because God is going to be the one who freely provides it. That's grace. But that free grace also transforms us into people who begin to obey.

False worship gives way now to obedience. Fasting becomes mercy. Sabbath becomes delight. That order actually matters. Isaiah is not teaching as a kind of works righteousness. The servant has already borne guilt in chapter 53.

Only then does Isaiah describe the life that is produced by that salvation. Isaiah 56 then must be read covenantally because foreigners are not going to be welcomed because of their holiness. They're welcome because they have been joined to the Lord.

They now love His name. They now hold fast to His covenant and worship Him. God is expanding His holy people, not abolishing holiness. And likewise, Isaiah 58 isn't some kind of general social program that's detached from covenant worship.

Covenant Worship Requires Mercy and Justice

The problem is religious hypocrisy among the leadership of Israel. People fast while they exploit their workers, and they fight with one another. God is demanding that their worship actually would affect and shape their entire life.

And in that way, true fasting loosens wickedness. It serves the hungry. It clothes the vulnerable and repairs the ruined places because true worship produces covenant fidelity. It produces faithfulness and obedience, joyfully so.

The renewed people do not merely perform religious duties. They learn to delight themselves in the Lord, especially in the Lord Himself. And in that way, Isaiah 54 through 58 flows directly from Jesus Christ, the suffering servant whose death creates a brand-new people.

Jesus Christ as Bridegroom, Davidic King, and Covenant Giver

He is the bridegroom. Zion, who was barren, ashamed, and forsaken, is taken by her Redeemer and made a bride. Her disgrace is removed, and He's going to make her fruitful again, an expanding tent anticipates the nations that are being gathered into Jesus' kingdom.

Christ is also the Davidic king through whom the sure mercies of David are secured forever. His resurrection guarantees that David's covenant promises will not fail. And through Jesus' reign, the nations that did not know Israel are going to be summoned by Him.

He is the covenant giver who offers living water freely. Salvation cannot be bought because Christ already paid the cost. He is the one who gathers the outsiders. Through Him, the foreigners who were once far off are brought near and given a place among the covenant people of God.

The nations are brought in to worship Israel's God, and because Christ bears the guilt and pours out His Holy Spirit, His people then begin to resemble their king. They practice mercy because they've received mercy from Him.

They repair what sin destroys because Christ is the one who restored them. They delight in God because grace has changed their life. The servant's suffering therefore creates a bride. It creates a kingdom.

It creates a worshiping people and a worldwide household gathered beneath the reign of the true Son of David. So as you read Isaiah 54 through 58 today, I want you to notice the fruit that is produced by the servant's suffering.

The bear on Zion becomes fruitful again. The thirsty are going to drink freely. Outsiders are going to be gathered, and worship is going to begin reshaping the life of God's people. Now tomorrow we're going to see Isaiah confront the problem that is still living underneath the old covenant people, Israel.

Sin, the Divine Warrior, and the Coming Redeemer

Sin is separating the people of Israel from God. The Lord Himself is going to arise as divine warrior. The Redeemer is going to come to Zion. The Spirit-anointed herald is going to announce the good news of the coming of Christ to this people who are in rebellion against God, but we'll get to that tomorrow.
