Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to Fight for Truth. In this video, we're going to talk about the recent
00:05
Christian Super Bowl commercial created by the organization called He Gets Us. Now, this is not the first video we've made about this organization, because unfortunately, it's not the first time they've done something out of bounds.
00:16
I'll link the previous videos in the description. Essentially, what we're talking about here is an extremely well -funded and deeply connected group that is trying to change the reputation of Jesus Christ through a huge multimedia marketing campaign.
00:30
What could go wrong? And included in this campaign was a commercial in the Super Bowl, which took place about a month ago.
00:36
A commercial that I believe was obnoxious at best, and deceitful at worst. And of course,
00:41
I'll explain why I think that. But first, don't take my word for it. Watch it yourself. What you know is true,
01:12
I was standing, you were there, two worlds colliding, and they could never tear us apart, we could live for a thousand years.
01:46
So in this video, we see images of various people washing the feet of others. In particular, we see those who are supposed to be political or sociological enemies of each other.
01:55
And the first reason I think this commercial is awful is that, quite simply, it has the wrong priorities.
02:01
You see, the average Super Bowl commercial costs six and a half million dollars, and that's just for a ten second ad.
02:07
And the Super Bowl itself is a uniquely captivating event, one which only comes around once a year.
02:13
So, in my opinion, any advertisement that is meant to teach people about Jesus ought to actually teach people the most important message of Jesus.
02:21
Seems like common sense, right? Here's a Biblical example. Paul the Apostle says in 1 Corinthians 15,
02:28
Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel that I preached to you. For I delivered to you, as of first importance, what
02:36
I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.
02:42
Notice that Paul specifically says that his goal was to deliver to this group the things of first importance.
02:49
In other words, the things of highest priority. Namely, the gospel message about Christ dying to save us from our sins.
02:56
This is not only a Biblical principle, but a principle of common sense. If you are going to spend millions of dollars to give a huge group of people a unique opportunity to hear you say something important, then you should probably say the thing that is of most importance first.
03:11
But instead of offering the gospel, they decided to offer vague, politically charged pictures of people washing each other's feet.
03:18
This brings me to my second point. The ad quite simply has no idea what Jesus actually did and taught.
03:25
You see, if you take this ad seriously, you very well could come away thinking that the solution to important civil and theological issues is to simply wash people's feet.
03:34
Because after all, that's the solution given by Jesus. One size fits all, that's what we do. But this is simply not the case.
03:41
Jesus never acted like this was the only tool in His toolbox, or even the main one. Even a basic reading of Scripture will show you immediately that Jesus was not just a traveling foot washer.
03:52
Jesus spent hours and hours, years in fact, preaching and teaching the truth of God and calling people to repentance.
04:00
Matthew 4 .17. Jesus did not preach a vague message of, just wash each other's feet, man, it'll all be okay.
04:07
No, He preached a specific and convicting message that demanded spiritual action from those who heard it.
04:14
And that is utterly missing from this video that claims to be teaching us about what Jesus did. This brings us to the third point.
04:21
This commercial is not only confusing, I believe it's directly misleading. The ad says, quote,
04:26
Jesus didn't teach hate. Instead, He washed feet. Yes, it is true that Jesus taught us to love our enemies,
04:33
Luke 6 .27. It is also true that God is love, 1 John 4 .8. And yet, believe it or not, the
04:38
Bible not only says that God hates, but the Bible actually teaches all Christians that they must hate as well.
04:45
Try putting that in a trendy commercial. It is very clear that God has a holy hatred of wickedness, to the point that He will punish it eternally.
04:53
But not only this, Romans 12 says that in order to exercise genuine love, you must, quote, abhor what is evil.
04:59
So yes, all Christians are commanded to hate what is evil. So to suggest that Jesus never taught us to hate is a half -truth at best, and at worst, it's an outright falsehood.
05:09
And as far as I can see, the only real argument against what I've been saying here is, but what if this ad leads people to getting saved?
05:16
This was echoed by conservative host Michael Knowles. And the answer to that is simple. God can use anything to save someone, but that doesn't make any given thing biblical.
05:26
For example, if someone murders a person, goes to jail, and then hears the gospel from a fellow inmate, that doesn't mean that killing people is actually a good thing.
05:35
The ends do not justify the means. They simply prove that God is sovereign over both the ends and the means.
05:41
But another argument people were using to defend this commercial was, well, if you don't like it, then make your own commercial.
05:47
And I'm pleased to say that someone actually did. Watch this. Two worlds collided, and they could never tear us apart.
06:44
We can live for a thousand years.
06:51
The video you just saw has over two million views. And by the way, it was made by one guy on his computer.
06:57
It was simple and conveyed the basic message that Christ actually saves people from their sins.
07:03
Who knew it was possible? And somehow, an organization with many staff members and millions and millions of dollars at their disposal, were not able to make a better commercial than one
07:12
Northern Irish pastor who runs a YouTube channel in his free time. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the problem with He Gets Us.
07:20
They are the perfect example of virtually everything that is wrong with the mainstream American man -centered church movement.
07:27
But I'm happy to say that there are many good, strong Christians who want to build something much better. So let's continue to do that, together.
