DAY 178: 1 Kings 17–19

Welcome to 5-Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today's June the 27th and we'll be looking at 1 Kings 17 -19. Now yesterday we watched the northern kingdom of Israel descend into state-sponsored Baal worship under Ahab and his wicked wife Jezebel.

Elijah Confronts Israel's Apostasy and the Coming Drought

While Judah was strengthened through the teaching of God's word, Ahab and Jezebel led the people into deeper rebellion against God. Well today the conflict erupts into the open because Elijah appears without any kind of introduction and announces that the heavens are going to close according to the word of the Lord.

And God then provides food during the famine, raises the dead, answers with fire on Mount Carmel, and exposes Baal as powerless. But after the public victory comes the private collapse. Elijah flees, despairs, and discovers that the God who defeats the idols also feeds, corrects commissions, and restores his weary servants.

And in that way, 1 Kings 17 opens with Elijah declaring that no rain is going to fall except by his word. Since Baal was worshipped as a storm and fertility god, the drought directly exposed the powerlessness of this idol.

Then the Lord preserves Elijah beside the brook of Cherith and later through a widow in Zarephath, deep within Baal's territory. Her flour and oil do not run out. Even when her son dies, God restores his life through Elijah.

Mount Carmel and the Lord Alone Is God

In chapter 18, Elijah confronts Ahab and gathers Israel and the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel. And he calls the people to stop limping around between two opinions. If the Lord is God, then they must follow him.

If Baal is God, they must follow him. Baal's prophets cry out, dance, and even cut themselves from morning until evening, but there is no voice and no answer and no response. Elijah then repairs the Lord's altar and he soaks the sacrifice with tons and tons of water.

And then he prays that Israel would know for sure that the Lord is God and that he is the one who's turning their hearts back again. Immediately, fire falls from heaven, consuming the offering, the wood and the stones and the dust and the water.

And the people fall on their faces and confess that the Lord alone is God. Soon afterward, the rain returns. But chapter 19 shifts dramatically. Jezebel threatens Elijah, the same man who just saw God bring fire down from heaven.

And then Elijah flees into the wilderness, exhausted, frightened, and despairing. The Lord gives him sleep and food and brings him to Horeb and meets him in the sound of a gentle blowing storm and corrects his belief that he's the one who stands alone.

And he sends him back into service. Then Elijah calls Elisha to follow him and to continue the prophetic work. So as you read today, I want you to ask the following question. How does the Lord prove that he alone is God?

And how does he preserve his servants and his covenant people? Well, these chapters reveal his overwhelming power against the idols, his sovereign authority over creation and death, and his patient mercy towards exhausted believers.

Public Triumph and Private Weakness

And in that way, the central tension in these chapters is the contrast between public triumph and private weakness. On Mount Carmel, Elijah appears fearless. He stands before the king and hundreds of false prophets and a wavering nation, and his prayer is heard immediately.

Fire falls from heaven and the people confess that the Lord alone is God. And yet one chapter later, Elijah is afraid, isolated, exhausted, and asking to die. And in that way, Scripture doesn't hide the contrast.

Great spiritual victories do not make God's servants invulnerable. Courage may be followed by periods of exhaustion. Faithfulness may be followed by discouragement. A man may stand boldly before a nation and yet still collapse beneath loneliness and fear.

But the Lord does not discard Elijah. Before correcting him, God allows him to sleep and even gives him food. He strengthens his body, he hears his complaints, he reveals his presence, and he reminds the prophet that the covenant story is far larger than Elijah can see.

7 ,000 in Israel have not bowed the knee to Baal, and God has already appointed kings and judgment and a successor and has preserved his remnant. Elijah believes he's the final defender of God's cause and truth, and yet the Lord reminds him that God preserves his own name, his own word, and his own people.

Elijah is a faithful servant, but he's not the Savior. And in that way, this episode also reveals the many ways that God's word works. It closes the heaven and restores the rain. It confronts kings and feeds widows.

It raises the dead and calls down fire. It speaks publicly before a nation and quietly to a weary prophet. Baal has no voice and gives no answer, but the word of the Lord rules creation and judges idolatry, restores the servants, and directs the course of history.

Elijah as a Type of Christ and the Greater Faithfulness of Jesus

Elijah, in that way, points us towards false worship and calls people to repentance. It even provides food and ministers beyond the land of Israel and raises the dead. But the contrast between Elijah and Christ is just as important as the similarities.

Because Elijah proves God's power by calling down fire from heaven upon a sacrifice, but Christ reveals God's saving power by becoming the sacrifice and bearing the fire of divine judgment himself. At the cross, the true offering is accepted so that guilty worshipers may be forgiven and reconciled to God.

Elijah restores one widow's son to mortal life, but Christ rises from the dead never to die again and becomes the first fruit of a resurrection that will gather multitudes from the grave. Elijah also ministers to the widow in Zarephath, beyond Israel's borders, anticipating the mercy of God flowing outward to the peoples of the nations through Jesus.

And yet Elijah remains a frail and weak prophet. He becomes afraid, discouraged, and convinced that he alone is standing, and yet Christ never abandons his mission. In Gethsemane, under anguish far greater than Elijah could ever dream, he remains obedient and walks deliberately towards the cross.

Where Elijah discovers a remnant of 7 ,000, Christ gathers and preserves a multitude that no one can number from every tribe, tongue, and nation. God's kingdom never depends finally upon the strength of a servant or a preacher or a missionary or whatever else, but upon the faithfulness of Christ its King.

So as you read 1 Kings 17 -19 today, watch the word of the Lord exposing Baal, restoring life, answering with fire, bringing rain, preserving a remnant, and restoring the weary prophet. And tomorrow Ahab will receive astonishing military victories, and yet Naboth's vineyard will reveal the king who can defeat armies but still can't govern his own covetous heart.
