Debate: Is the Sale of Biblical Instruction Simony?

Read the free book on the topic at https://simony.info.

Is selling biblical instruction simony? Should Christian books, seminary courses, and gospel conferences be offered freely, or can charging for them be a legitimate way to support those who teach?

In this debate, Conley Owens defends the proposition that the sale of biblical instruction is simony, the sin named after Simon Magus’s attempt to purchase spiritual power in Acts 8. Tanner challenges that conclusion, arguing that payment for a teacher’s finite labor does not necessarily constitute the sale of God’s gifts.

Both affirm that ministers should receive financial support and that spiritual blessings must not be sold. Their disagreement concerns where that boundary lies and how Scripture teaches us to identify it.

Through opening statements, cross-examination, rebuttals, and closing arguments, they address:

• What exactly does Acts 8 condemn? • Is biblical instruction a spiritual gift that must not be sold? • Does 1 Corinthians 9 authorize selling instruction, or receiving support? • Can payment for a teacher’s labor be distinguished from payment for spiritual ministry? • Do different principles apply to sermons, books, and optional courses? • What role should biblical inference and church history play in defining simony? • Can requiring attribution for a free resource constitute an improper exchange?
