All right, we're back. Another episode of Dead Man Walking Podcast. I love the laugh you have to kick it.
00:19
It's like David Lee Roth. He goes, he goes David Lee Roth, I go James Hetfield. No matter what
00:31
James Hetfield says, it always sounds like it's going to be racist. And it's not, but it's always like,
00:38
Hey man, how about them? Whoa. Whoa. Easy. Wow. Already off the rails.
00:44
I love it. My bad. Well, that's the voice of Darren Doan. Yep. Everyone. He's a repeat offender on the show.
00:52
We just can't get away from him. Yup. Uh, the people love him though. You know, you got to give the people what they want. Yup. That's our job.
00:59
We'll tell you the free market guy. That's right. But, uh, we're at fight, laugh, feast in Rapid City right now.
01:05
That's where this episode is coming from. We have a little bit of a break. So we wanted to talk to Darren. We had a great time.
01:11
It's nice right now. It's so loud all day. Everyone's hanging out here.
01:17
Well, I mean, if that's not a picture right there, everyone else eating and we're grinding. I mean, that's what we do over there. Right guys.
01:23
Just a bunch of lazy reform people. But, uh, we had a great time at, uh, the beer and Psalms last night.
01:33
And then afterwards we did, uh, a little, um, bar hop, if you will, where we had a cigar and a drink and we brought glory to God in that.
01:42
And then you were there with an artist that you brought in. Yeah. Where'd you find this cat?
01:48
Man. I mean, I was in Ron Artis, right? Ron Artis. Okay. I think it's
01:53
Artis technically. Cause I think, uh, I think Ron Artis is the guy that like punches people or like the basketball.
01:59
Right. So, um, Ron Artis without the
02:04
T, um, it's artists. Yeah. It's artists. Um, and, um, I actually met him in Hawaii.
02:10
I was doing a project with, um, another company and we were, we had set this amazing house up on the beach on the
02:17
North shore of Hawaii. And we were doing musicians jamming. And my producer who lives in Hawaii kind of knew
02:23
Ron and was driving to go pick something up and saw Ron said, Hey, we're jamming over at this house.
02:29
If you want to come and try some gear out, whatever. And he just showed up and we were like, Oh, who are, what?
02:36
And it turns out he's played with everyone from like Jack Johnson and all these guys and McFleetwood and all that.
02:41
So people know who Ron is, but he's still new and he's up and coming. And I think he's about to turn that corner.
02:48
And he actually came out to Moscow, Idaho to make a music video. I made a video for him.
02:53
Cause that's, that's where you go for music videos. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that is pretty much, I mean,
02:59
Def Leppard. I mean, Def Leppard, no. I mean, Lou Harris, although I did three music videos for shine down in the schedule wise, when we did the threat to survival album, they came out there, they kind of wanted to get away.
03:13
Yeah. Yeah. We shot up, we shot the cut the cord music video there and in Moscow.
03:19
So it's, it's, and, uh, but anyway, so that's where I make it smarter. You make it cool.
03:24
That's right. You know, that's how you guys roll out there. Still questionable, but yeah. Um, but it's, and I met
03:29
Ron and I just, I was like, dude, like, like it was weird. Cause I've, I've met a lot of great artists and I was like, dude, this is like one of those guys.
03:36
Right. And so anyways, he was out in Moscow. I was like, wait, while I'm out here, should I do a show? This is during like COVID world and all that.
03:42
And we did a private show in Moscow and, you know, and he hadn't done a show in like eight or nine months. Yeah. And he was like, he's like, who are these people?
03:50
Like, this is awesome. And then Gabe was there and Gabe said, you should come out to the rally. We were just in a conversation.
03:56
Right. And then Gabe walked away or something. Then Ron reached out like a couple months later. He's like, so what's up with that rally thing you guys were talking about?
04:03
I was like, well, I'm doing the after party. You want to come? He's like, I'll see you in South Dakota. Wow. Very cool.
04:08
He did a, he did a nice, you said 15, but I felt like it was more like 20, 22. And he did a couple extra.
04:15
Yeah. Well, that's what you want, right? Yeah, man. His chops, man. His vocals are unbelievable.
04:21
So thanks for bringing him. That was a really cool set. I really want to see Jason up there back to back and you guys could have like a, like a finger.
04:28
Yeah. We can go back and forth. You got some quick fingers to Jay. Yeah. Back in the day.
04:33
I mean, well, I think that's it about Ron because Ron, you know, there's, there's a surface level where I think you can hear
04:39
Ron and go and you just enjoy it. Wow. This guy's really good. But what I have learned is that like musicians are like, dude, that's crazy.
04:45
What he's doing. Yeah. Yeah. It's slab the way he's slapping and he's not using a pick. No, that was, that was rad.
04:51
So I think, so I love the different levels that Ron kind of connects with in, in an audience.
04:56
So, and that was my goal. Once Ron said he was coming, you know, last year I went all nuts and crazy and stand on the table and get everyone screaming.
05:04
And, you know, and, um, this year though, it was sort of like with Ron coming, I was like,
05:10
I really wanted to be about Ron. Right. You know what I mean? Like, I'm down to take all the attention when it's just, right.
05:17
That's what we do. Right. It's just us. Like, right. So what'd you get? Right. This is all I got. So when, when, when
05:22
Ron said he would come, it was really cool to be like, okay, I'm really going to focus on Ron and just try to really bless this guy with, with an amazing community.
05:29
And he was blown away. He kept saying to me, he's like, I've never been with this many people who are ready to make something happen.
05:38
Well, it was so Darren don't too, because you basically took an artist that to a group of people that might not that have been in their kind of lane as music listeners.
05:48
And you're always doing this. I, when I look at your stuff online, it's like you're taking two weird things and you're putting them together and then it works.
05:54
Yeah. And then it's like, and that's why it was so crazy that I was like crossover, I guess I'm doing that again. Like just with what we're doing here in this community and this, in this movement and this moment,
06:04
I was like, well, I've only got one trick. So it's great that I can keep doing it here. So enough about that.
06:11
Let's talk about what you got going on with cannon press. Let's talk about you. All right.
06:17
You've got a project, you got some stuff, some content on there. Can you talk about that? Let our listeners know what's going on. Because we just had
06:23
AJ from cannon press on. And if you're listening to this, you probably just heard that episode. And we're big cannon suppress cannon suppressors.
06:30
Yeah, big cannon suppressors. Supporters is talking too fast. Tell us what you got going on over there.
06:37
I'm so pumped on this. And maybe we can go to the backstory. But but but the front story is bringing all my documentaries and new original projects to the cannon app exclusively.
06:48
So like this is this is this is really cool. So we've got collision up there. We've got free speech apocalypse up there.
06:55
Yes, thank you. We've got keeping bear up there. But then we've got they grow up fast. A lot of people haven't seen that my family documentary documented the first 10 years of being a family with kids.
07:06
Wow. And which is amazing. I have a whole other feature film called hard knocks life. My son over here kind of a follow up to they grew up fast.
07:13
I documented from age four to eight his life. Wow. And it was just a project that I was obviously working on for four years.
07:22
And I would just show people every now and again, and they would just be like, dude, what is this? Like, I don't know.
07:28
Yeah, I just don't know. And so I've got that we have collision through new eyes dropping soon, which is the whole making of documentary series of making collision, which is going to end up being like 10 hours or so.
07:40
Yeah, I was gonna say how much a lot. I mean, not surprisingly, not as much as you would think because it was really only shot over the course of four days.
07:48
Okay, so not. Okay. Yeah. But there's a lot. Yeah, but there's a lot. And then I kind of walked through what was happening.
07:54
My voice is going back and forth on what Okay, this scene right here. Here's what there's backstories. There's things
08:00
I'm pausing and going, okay, wait, hold on. Here's so collision through new eyes. I have a slew of interviews with people like Gary Damar on the
08:07
Antichrist on Matthew 24. I have a three hour series with Gary Damar on verse by verse.
08:13
I hold his feet to the fire on every verse of Matthew 24. And I make him defend it. Yeah, I like it.
08:19
So that's cool. I've got stuff from the archives. Like I've got this 10 minute piece
08:24
I did with theologian James B. Jordan. That is just will rock your world.
08:31
So I've got all this stuff. And then they're giving me my own talk show on. Yeah, on the
08:36
Canada. Right. It was awesome. Yeah, they like Nate called me. He's like, Hey, um, they want to give you a show.
08:43
It can but I don't think anyone knows how to really call you and say, we want to give you like, it sounds weird to say we want to give you a show.
08:51
Right? Right. Right. You know what I mean? Like, I can't go make it wouldn't sound. I'd be like, thank you. Right? Yeah. Well, no,
08:56
I saw what do you want to meet? That's what I said. It was amazing. They said, Look, we'll shoot it. Well, it was more like, we really will do everything.
09:02
Yeah, right. And they're trying to they're chasing good content. That's what we were talking about. They want good quality content that's thought for broking and groundbreaking and all those things.
09:12
I've been doing that now. And so it's but I don't think anyone's not been doing I've been doing for the last two years, right?
09:18
cranking out kind of trying to show people that I can do this, right? It's not like it was a layup. I was like, these opportunities are coming because I just put myself out there.
09:28
Yeah. So I think that I think that's the lesson there. And that's, that's so incredible about what you do.
09:33
Because you you bring content. Like that's what you do. Yeah, I mean, like, yes, stop.
09:39
No, it's awesome, though. Like, I mean, that's exactly the way you know, should that's what we should strive to do.
09:46
Well, you guys are doing I mean, like I said, I keep getting inspired by everybody. I'm inspired what you guys are doing.
09:52
And even more like, last time we had talked, I mean, which which one's doing real estate? Who's doing? Yeah, yeah.
09:58
I do day trading. Yeah. See, I'd like to know more. Like I, it'd be fun for you guys do an episode just even on that with you guys.
10:06
Because I think that even brings more validity to what you're doing. Right? Right. And I mean, like, you're not a bunch of losers in a trailer park somewhere.
10:14
And this is it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is it. Right, right. Because anyone can do this. We actually have we're going on Joel Webbin's podcast, and we're going to be talking about that.
10:24
We're guests on his show, Right Response Ministries, and Applied Theology. And we're gonna be talking about kind of Christian business and how you run a business from a biblical worldview, but also the real kind of pitfalls of that as well.
10:37
You know, I tell people all the time, I got into real estate, because we wanted to homeschool. I wanted to be with my family.
10:43
But you're Oh, I mean, you know, this too. And Jason understands as well. You are just always on.
10:48
Yes, I get calls. I've got calls at two o 'clock in the morning for clients. Yeah, they're in a different time zone. They want to know something
10:54
I pick up. There is stuff you have to watch too. And it takes a certain kind of wife.
11:01
It does. That's not like I got an awesome one. Yeah. I got a great one, man. Those are the things that come, you know, from that, you've got to have that kind of understanding of what what is it going to take to do that?
11:12
See, I totally forgot that you do day trading. Yeah, like for real. It's Yeah, that's what I do. Like, like, that's wild.
11:18
That's just not I don't care what I do, man. Like, that's gnarly. Like, I mean, I'm pretty sure it's like day trading like assassin.
11:26
Yeah. I think even assassins go like, I could never do your job. Right? Yeah. I mean, that's definitely nerves of steel.
11:33
I see some of the crypto thing at all. Are you trading crypto at all?
11:38
Not really. I got into doge for a second, right? And then get into some like fractions of Bitcoin because I don't roll like that.
11:45
Yeah. But there's 1000 more other cryptos. I know. Yeah. XRP. And by the way, I'm not a fan of financial advice.
11:52
I can't give him advice here. Blah, blah, blah. His work.
11:58
He's up at, you know, watching European markets and all that day. Would you tell me how much you're trading a day on a good day?
12:04
Would you ever close that? It just depends. I tell you off air. Okay. It's defense.
12:11
I love it. Someone's going to pay for these shirts. That's why we get along because I would totally tell you.
12:19
He's the more biblical humble. Once again, once again, day trader assassin. There's always a little bit of secrecy.
12:25
Gotta have steady hands. Steady hands, baby. It's it's, it is, it is true.
12:30
You know, wealthy. Well, and I'm not calling you wealthy. In general, people with money don't talk about money.
12:39
It's true. It's kind of funny. It's, I would love, I loved hearing you talk to David Bonson about that.
12:45
I mean, that was an awesome show. I didn't know. Did you come out with part two with Dave?
12:51
No, I'm about, I mean, it's sitting there. It's okay. It's about you. Although get on it. I do have the, but the whole podcast is available on the dome cast.
12:59
So you can hear the whole thing. And then I'm going out. I think like next month I'm sitting down with him and Larry Kudlow.
13:06
And I mean, I kind of can talk about it, but I'm, it's, it's going to be taking on the
13:12
David Bonson brand. I met Larry at the white house. Well, no, but I called
13:18
David. I'm like, cause he was like, yeah, we're welcoming Larry Kudlow to our firm. Cause that's he's at the firm now. He's like, he's at the
13:25
Bonson group. And I called David and I was like, so you just have Larry Kudlow.
13:30
Like, could we do something? He's like, well, yeah, I see him every other day. I was like, yeah, get on that.
13:36
So I'm just imagining like a slow motion, go figure shot of like David Bonson and Larry Kudlow, just walking down the streets of New York and then just sitting down and having a steak dinner and just talking finance.
13:48
Right. Right. So I'm just, I know I'm, I'm, I'm definitely getting jazzed up. Yeah. So yeah, that's wild.
13:54
Very cool. So I wanted to ask you a quick question. This is a personal question, not a creative question.
14:00
So you mentioned too, even with, uh, what was the, what was the film called? We've followed your son here.
14:05
Hard knocks life. That's hard knocks life. Cause that's not right there. Not shout out to Knox who is already got some, uh, phone in his hand.
14:11
He's shooting. He's he's on Instagram. He's got it upside down to get a lower angle.
14:19
Dad's teaching him. Well, very cool. Yeah. So, so someone like you, who's going, going, going all the time, right?
14:26
You have that gene, you have that drive, you got that thing. How do you balance that with personal life? Like you mentioned, you got to have a good wife.
14:34
Uh, how do you balance even doing something with, you know, your son for four years and filming it, keeping, you know, keeping it all balanced and keeping it separate or, or do you just embrace it and go, no, this is what
14:45
I do. And I'm including the family and we're all going for it. I think for me, I, I, I don't think you can make distinctions.
14:53
Okay. I mean, I just, I, I, I'm not quite sure who came up with that. You know, I mean,
14:58
I get, I mean, I do work life, uh, family life. Yeah. Like, I don't know.
15:03
Have you ever been hungry? Right. How's that work life balance going for you when you can't pay the rent?
15:09
Yeah. Right. I don't know. But you know what? We should spend more time together. Like, like, like, what do you mean?
15:14
Like, like whoever is saying that, like, I don't know, man. Like, I just don't know if that's, again,
15:20
I, I don't have enough of a thought out, maybe theology of that, but I just don't know.
15:28
I mean, look, I think we have a day of rest. Yeah, sure. That's set.
15:33
I mean, we've got church. Yeah. You know? Um, I don't think it's supposed to be separate. I'm just, yeah, no,
15:38
I don't think so. I think we might be going down the same path here. I don't, I don't understand the work in life separate.
15:44
Like, well, the other thing too, is like, I work from home. He works from home. Now we homeschool. Uh, it's like,
15:50
I'm always around. My kids are part of my business. When they come in and they see me writing a contract or talking to a client,
15:56
I'll bring them right in. And then we explain what just happened. And it's like, look,
16:01
I'm growing this thing. So you can take it over one day. Probably if you don't, that's fine too. But it's like, it's gotta be combined.
16:07
He, he, he knows this is his, if he wants it. You know what I mean? It's funny. I've never,
16:12
I don't think I've ever articulated this or said this, but you know, I've met hundreds of men who have a phenomenal work life, quote unquote balance.
16:21
And they are the first to be like, I don't know what I'm doing with my life. Like the ones that have this amazing balance are like,
16:28
I just don't know what like, like, and those who have these sort of this integrated, like, whatever we call this, you know, we have other problems, right?
16:38
This, this leads to other problems. But I have found that, you know, for us as men, it's amazing how stupid we can be in just not sitting down with their wives for 10 minutes, right?
16:54
Yeah. Like a work life balance issue. This is like a, can you just stop for 10 minutes, literally 10 minutes and talk to your wife.
17:03
And then she's like, you know what? Hey, I'm good for a week. Yeah. Like, it's amazing how little, and so this idea of work life balance is, but even sometimes we miss the mark there as well.
17:14
That's my point. Especially if you're creative and you're excited about something, but that's my point. Consume you. Right. So people try to find a work life balance, which is like a 50, 50 when it's like actually a 98, 2%.
17:25
Like if you would just sit down, you know, so I always tell myself with my kids, with my wife, like, okay, wait, like, you know, it actually doesn't take much to say, well, how was your day, honey?
17:34
Right. Well, you know, like, and, and so I think because we don't, we create this massive gap and we think the only solution now, because we've created this huge Delta is a 50, 50 work life balance.
17:46
Yeah. Right. And so I don't know where I'm going exactly, but that's awesome. I didn't know you were starting a marriage counseling center now.
17:56
Oh my goodness. I'm only talking to myself right here. I'm just, you know, which is a scary thing. You don't really want to talk about that stuff on podcasts.
18:03
Cause then it gets, it gets really evangelical when you're like, I'm just going to talk about my marriage. You're like, okay,
18:09
Ephesians five. So I think the, the grind, and again,
18:16
I think there's seasons. Sure. There's, there's seasons. And then I think when, when you, you, you can try it.
18:23
So if there is a balance, at least maybe I'll at least address what, what I think maybe is a, is a, my thought of balance is see
18:33
God's blessing. And then realize that God is still the one in control.
18:39
And if he brings you somewhere, it's not like now double down, triple down quadra. It's like, okay, he brought you here.
18:45
Sure. And you probably didn't even do much to deserve it. Right. As far as what you did to get there.
18:51
The same God here has the ability to bless a weekend off a real weekend or a trip and still make sure you have a career.
18:59
I think it comes down to literally stewarding every opportunity in a biblical way, whether that's with family work, relationships, whatever it is, steward it wisely and take advantage of it.
19:11
And it's something N .D. Wilson said earlier today, when he just said, look at basically saying the way you are to your children and your family is way you're reflecting
19:21
God to them. I'm paraphrasing, but you know what I mean? And that's why
19:26
I moved to Moscow, Idaho. Like I wanted to be able to watch these people and see if they were hypocrites. I was like, well, okay, then
19:32
I'll move next to N .D. Wilson and see like, you know, and I get a chance to see N .D. Wilson living an absolute wild,
19:39
I mean, wild life and crazy life. And like, wait, where have you been? What did you do?
19:44
And you're still deaf in one ear after brain surgery and you're not even balanced and yet you're still, you know, cheerful.
19:53
And I see your wife in town and I see her with the kids and I see stuff and we're picking up kids or helping out or doing things.
20:00
And then he crossing each other in the airport, where are you going? Like, what are you doing? And then like, I get, and then he just moved.
20:06
He's closer to where we live now. And so I get to see his car almost every day and they have a well that's not working right now.
20:13
So he's driving three times a day, filling out a big thing of water and like fill in the tank every single day for a family of however many kids that like, it's crazy.
20:22
It's crazy. And they're cheerful and they're ready to throw down in any way, shape or form to, you know, help people.
20:29
I mean, I'm humbled by the people I get to see in, in, in Moscow, Idaho. Beautiful. Well, Darren, thank you so much for coming on.
20:36
We always love having you on the podcast. Jason, do you have anything else for this? We'll go out there and talk money.
20:43
I can't wait for these numbers, but you guys make sure you go check out his content on, on the
20:48

20:55
We really should be making, making a commission with Canon. We talk about them so much in our podcast. We do just really love what they're doing.
21:00
I think, you know, they're bringing in the right people. They're getting quality content. They're partnering with guys like you. So Jake McAtee, I hope you're listening.
21:07
Make, make a deal right now. So do this. All right, guys, thanks so much for listening.
21:13
