SERMON: Wisdom And The Voices You Listen To

If you cannot trust your own heart, whose voice can you trust? Proverbs warns that foolish men do not merely lack wise counsel. They actively evade it. We isolate ourselves from anyone who might confront us, insulate ourselves with yes men who affirm us, and keep asking for advice until someone finally gives us permission to do what we already wanted.

Through the ruin of Ahab and Rehoboam, this sermon shows that a multitude of counselors provides safety only when those counselors fear God more than they fear you and love truth more than they love your approval.

Yet our ultimate hope is not found in human wisdom. Jesus Christ is the greater Rehoboam and the Wonderful Counselor. Rehoboam emerged after three days with a bitter word that divided a kingdom. Christ arose on the third day with the good word of the gospel, bearing the scourge and heavy yoke Himself to gather His people into a kingdom that will fill the earth.
