00:01
Good evening, everybody. We're going to be in our prelude, so Evelyn's going to start playing the piano.
04:19
Good evening, everyone. We're glad you're here. This is a tradition in our church, of course, those of you who are part of us know the night of carols that we do every year.
04:28
I'm not exactly sure how many years we've done it. I do remember the first year we did it. All we did was the congregation sing carols until at the end of it, we were all hoarse and raspy and could hardly talk.
04:39
So it's developed since then, and we have a great time singing carols and listening to others as they minister to us.
04:46
So before we start, let's just commit this time to the Lord and ask his blessings. Father, thank you for the time that we have together to sing your praises, to hear praises sung to you, to hear different ways of praising your name.
05:00
We thank you that this time of the year we sing these things called carols because we are thankful for the coming of the
05:10
Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior. And so Lord, help us tonight to rejoice in his birth, to rejoice in why you sent him, to rejoice in the salvation that we have in him.
05:24
Thank you now for our time already, because we know as we sing praises to you, we can't help but find great joy and thanksgiving in our hearts.
05:33
So bless this time, we pray, as we praise you in Jesus' name, amen. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
08:33
Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy.
08:42
They rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
08:48
For the yoke of his burden and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
08:55
For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle to molt, and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
09:04
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called
09:12
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
09:19
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end. On the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness, from this time forth and forevermore, the zeal of the
09:34
Lord of hosts will do this. If you would, please stand and sing
09:45
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. O come,
10:02
O come, Emmanuel, O come,
10:19
O come, Emmanuel, Rejoice!
10:26
Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee,
10:35
O Israel. O come,

11:20
O Israel. O come,
11:27

11:34
O come, Emmanuel, Rejoice!

Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee,
12:05
O Israel. O come,
12:12
O come,
12:19
Emmanuel, O come, O come, Emmanuel, Rejoice!
12:42
Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee,
12:52
O Israel. You may be seated.
13:16
O come,
14:37
O come, Emmanuel, O come, O come, Emmanuel, Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee,
15:23
O Israel. O come,
15:47

Son of the Lord He is in human flesh, and in the body and the blood
23:13
He will give to all that suffer and that the powers of hell may fail as the darkness clears away

Fix winged, staring, cherubim with seamless eyes

26:22
Lo, How a Rose E 'er Blooming Rose e 'er blooming from tender stem has sprung
27:01
Of Jesse's lineage coming
27:08
As men of old did keep a flowered bride
27:20
But midst the cold of winter, when half -spent was the
27:34
Isaiah was foretold it, the rose that With Mary we beheld it, the virgin born
28:01
To show God's love for us she bore to man a
28:10
Savior When half -spent was the night
28:21
The shepherds heard the song, angels bright
28:35
Of Christ the Lord of Glory was born
28:44
To Bethlehem they said
28:54
And in the manger found
28:59
Him as angel This flower's fragrance tender
29:15
Its sweetness fills the air
29:23
This comes with glorious splendor
29:29
Of darkness everywhere
29:36
To man yet very God From sin and death
29:45
He saves us And brightens
29:52
O Savior, Child of Mary Who dwelt on your
30:13
King of holiness
30:24
Bring us that day to be brave Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way
31:06
When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph Before they came together she was found to be with child from the
31:13
Holy Spirit And her husband Joseph, being just man and unwilling to put her to shame
31:19
Resolved to divorce her quietly But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the
31:25
Lord appeared to him in a dream Saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take
31:30
Mary as your wife For that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit She will bear a son, and you shall call
31:38
His name Jesus For He will save His people from their sins All this took place to fulfill what the
31:45
Lord had spoken by the prophet Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call
31:50
His name Emmanuel Which means God with us When Joseph woke from the sleep, he did as the angel of the
31:58
Lord commanded him He took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son
32:04
And he called His name Jesus Signs shall be given
33:13
To see Human being
33:32
For all to see Hope for all
34:34
Behold With us
34:57
Our God Is with us Emmanuel So what will be your answer?
35:11
Will you divorce her or make peace with her?
35:51
With us Emmanuel Emmanuel Our God Is with us
36:19
Our God Is with us Emmanuel And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night
37:18
And an angel of the Lord appeared to them And the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear
37:25
And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people
37:32
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the
37:37
Lord And this will be the sign for you You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger
37:45
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host Praising God and saying,
37:52
Glory to God in the highest And on earth peace among those with whom
37:57
He is pleased When the angels went away into heaven
38:03
The shepherds said to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem And see this thing that has happened which the
38:10
Lord has made known to us And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger
38:18
And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child
38:25
And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart
39:13
There was a boy, went for a walk
39:19
Down by the stream, picked out some rocks
39:26
And stepped out on the battlefield No shield or sword for him to wield
39:39
The giant jeered and boasted loud
39:45
The little boy just held his crown
39:52
And pulled a stone out of his pouch
39:58
And raised his sling and slung it round Singing, Glory to God in the highest
40:11
Glory to God, Glory to God Glory to God in the highest
40:23
Glory to God A coward man was hiding low
40:36
An angel called, told him to go
40:43
And lead his kin to overthrow The burdens of their wicked foes
40:57
His troop was small, three hundred men
41:03
The foe too vast to count like sand
41:10
Still they around the foe that night
41:16
Raised up their horns and jars of light Singing, Glory to God in the highest
41:28
Glory to God, Glory to God Singing, Glory to God in the highest
41:42
Glory to God A pilgrim broke in desert sun
41:55
Were told to take a fortress town
42:02
No siege ramps built, no battered ram
42:08
The word of God would be their plan
42:15
Six days they marched around its sides
42:21
The seventh day, the seventh time
42:28
The trumpets made a victor sound
42:34
The people raised a mighty shout Singing, Glory to God in the highest
42:45
Glory to God, Glory to God Singing, Glory to God in the highest
42:58
Glory to God A virgin aches in labor pains
43:12
She's giving birth to him who saves
43:20
There in the barn, the humble maids
43:25
The filthy rags, the drop unclean
43:32
The rock now strikes the giant's face
43:39
The jars now break, the light dismays
43:46
Jericho's walls are tumbling down For Christ is born, the angels shout
43:57
Singing, Glory to God in the highest
44:04
Glory to God, Glory to God Singing, Glory to God in the highest
44:17
Glory to God Stand and sing again
44:44
Hark the herald angels sing Hark the herald angels sing
45:18
Hark the herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King Peace on earth and mercy mild
45:27
God and sinners reconciled With angelic host proclaim
45:46
Christ is born Christ, my
46:02
God, is dead, adored Christ, the everlasting
46:08
King In time he makes his bed with men
46:49
Hail, all hail, the Prince of Peace Hail, O Son of God While he lays his glory high
47:12
For death and death to mourn he died Born to raise us to second birth
47:26
Hark the herald angels sing Glory to the newborn
47:37
King From Israel nations come Fixing up triumph o 'er all
47:46
Christ, the Lord's coming King Who sent us a servant's pair
47:56
Adam's likeness now we've made Stand by me in Jesus' name
48:06
Sending out from above He is saved, the
48:12
Saviour God Hark the herald angels sing
48:20
Glory to the newborn King So, every year
49:04
I say I'm going to get up here and not be nervous and then every year I'm sitting back there shaking in my boots
49:11
So... I pray that this would be used to bless and may y 'all see the
49:20
Spirit In our Christian circles, we throw around words that we assume everyone knows the meaning of Words like propitiation, sanctification, evangelism
49:38
We're so used to these words that we forget that to the world out there these words may be foreign or have a completely different meaning altogether
49:50
For example, out to the world outside these walls evangelism has taken on political meaning
49:58
To the world at large, the term seems to have become a term for a clique of Christians that are willfully blind to anything and everything except for voting certain people into power so long as those people use the correct buzzwords
50:20
But, in the New Testament meaning an evangelist is simply one who is sent to deliver a certain message
50:30
That message need not be simply religious Have you ever shared about a book you enjoyed or a shortcut to make life easier or anything like that at all?
50:42
Well then, congratulations, you're an evangelist Tonight I'm going to introduce you to a figure in the
50:49
Christmas story that is very often overlooked This person is not the first in the
50:56
New Testament to act as an evangelist but they're the first one whose name we know
51:03
The unnamed first New Testament evangelists were, of course, the shepherds who attended the
51:08
Christ child on the night of his birth Luke records them as telling people what they saw at that What?
51:24
A stammering tongue Let's begin that again, shall we?
51:32
Luke records the shepherds as telling people what they saw that night because the people wondered at their tales
51:40
The first named evangelist, however, appears in the in -between story of the nativity
51:46
They appear in between the stories of the shepherds and the wise men during the small family's visit to the temple to purify
51:53
Mary and Jesus after her child's birth Approximately a month after Jesus was born
51:59
Joseph and Mary brought two birds to the temple in Jerusalem to make
52:05
Mary ceremonially clean after childbirth and to ritually redeem her firstborn son according to the
52:13
Levitical law And during that visit, we are introduced to two people who interacted with them
52:20
Simeon, a devout man was told that he would not die until he saw the promised Christ When he saw
52:27
Jesus and held him he prayed that now he could depart in peace because Simeon had seen the salvation of the world
52:35
He went on to utter a prophecy of the cross and of the pain that Mary would undergo when she was watching these events
52:45
Then we're introduced to Anna Anna was an Asherite and a prophetess of advanced years up until her 80s and probably older that lived at the temple and worshipped there day and night
52:58
Verse 38 of Luke 2 tells us this about Anna And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem She spoke of Jesus to anyone who would listen to her
53:19
This is our evangelist An older woman devoted to God is the first named mouthpiece for Christ to anyone who would listen
53:31
The most unlikely person anyone at that time could think of was used by God to spread the word
53:40
The Son of God had arrived And I find it fascinating that three decades and a few years later
53:49
God did it again He used the most unlikely person anyone at the time could think of to spread the word that the
53:58
Son of God had risen from the dead We know this evangelist's name as well
54:04
Mary Magdalene Two women decades apart One unchanging message
54:12
The Messiah is here And guess what? The message is still the same
54:18
The Messiah is here He is alive
54:24
He reigns as Lord He will return
54:32
So Evangelist Go spread the good news Thank you
55:02
I'm a blessed man Don't you think? Y 'all don't know that's my wife Now there was a man in Jerusalem.
55:13
His name was Simeon And this man was righteous and devout Waiting for the consolation of Israel and the
55:19
Holy Spirit was upon him And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the
55:26
Lord's Christ And he came into the spirit and to the temple And when the parents brought the child
55:31
Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said
55:38
Lord now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your word For my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples a light for revelation to the
55:51
Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel Well now may we depart in peace according to your word blessed
57:03
Lord now may we depart in peace for our eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before all the world
57:40

01:05:31
So pray with me Oh God in heaven what gift is this that true God would take on true flesh to save us from our sins
01:05:41
Oh Lord when we consider Jesus Christ how can we not do anything but worship this great
01:05:48
Saviour God to consider our rebellion and our sin that you wouldn't turn us away that you wouldn't come in wrath but instead in grace upon grace what a gift we have in Christ I pray
01:06:02
God that our hearts would be warm that in this moment in this season we wouldn't be cold hearted to these wondrous things that you have done for people like us who are so undeserving let us
01:06:15
Lord sing praises to our King not just in song here but also in the way we live our lives as a living sacrifice to you so that as we gather with friends and family to talk about Christmas may people see
01:06:29
Christ in us for he has done a wondrous thing for us we praise you and we thank you for him tonight
01:06:37
I pray God that we would enjoy this meal together as Christians as people who have been called out of darkness into light that we would enjoy a meal with one another and even talk and have fellowship and conversations of praise to our
01:06:52
King for this great work of salvation we praise you and we thank you and may you be glorified now and forever in Jesus name
