The Rich Man and Lazarus: A Warning About Hell

There was a certain rich man who was a great and powerful and fine woman who carried trumps every day. There was a certain beggar named Laddus who would mail out his gates from the shores and decide to be fed with the trumps which fell from the rich man's table.

But when the dogs came and licked his floors, and it came to pass that the beggar died in his prison, the rich man also died in his burial, and in hell he looked at his eyes seeing in torment since he and Abraham were far off and Laddus in his prison.

And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Laddus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and fool my tongue that I am tormented in the snow. Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Laddus evil things.

But now he is comforted, and thou art to a mention. And beside all this, between us and you, there is a great self-sacrifice, so that they who will pass from hope to you cannot be able to pass to us that which comes from God.

Then he said, I pray thee therefore, Father, that thou wouldst send him to my father's house, that I have five brethren that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. And Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets left them near them.

And he said, Nay, Father Abraham, but if one will not attend from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded to run away from the dead.

Eternal Punishment and the Rejection of God's Mercy

The doctrine of eternal punishment and retribution for evil deeds has always been mostly posted to the natural man. It is one of the most intolerable things in the entire word of God. For anything that seeks to infringe upon the liberty and the freedom of unsaved people when liberals are pleased, or a threatening punishment for gifted living, would not possibly be palatable to such a person.

Whether man likes it or not, and whether man obeys it or not, the word of God makes it clear that the doctrine of eternal punishment and retribution for evil deeds is very distinctly and clearly told in the entire word of God.

For I am sure that anyone who has been saved by the grace of God, and who has been permitted this wonderful ministry of reconciliation, has far rather preached on the love of God than on the judgment of God.

And how wonderful it is to know that we have a message of love, that God so loved the world and gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. And surely it is so much easier to preach on love.

As you see, there is a great danger of imbalance in our God-given ministry. And if we preach entirely on the love of God, constantly offering men and women the salvation of God, and that's what we have the right and the authority and the permission to do, that human nature, being what it is, if you preach personally on the love of God without a proper balance of the prospect of the judgment of God, which is the prospect of the rejection of the love of God, the human heart is so betrayed that it's a low sight to the fact that God not only loved sinners, but that God hates sin, and that if God loved sinners enough to give His only begotten Son, they would only believe on Him and not have everlasting life, that the rejection of this ultimate salvation is always followed by the judgment of God.

So, in order to be faithful to our God-given ministry and to maintain a proper balance in this world of reconciliation that's been permitted to us, it is not only the responsibility of the preacher to tell you how God loves you and how He's tried God for you, but also to warn you that just as soon as the summer follows the spring and the fall of the summer and the winter of the fall, even so the judgment of God always, without a single exception, follows the rejection of the mercy of God.

He that believeth on Him, the Bible says, is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already. Throughout the entire Word of God, this blessed book of history, inspired by the Philippians 3, warns us historically, giving an accurate account of this truth that if you deliberately reject the salvation of God, you will reap the only thing that is left, and that is the judgment of God.

Biblical Examples of Judgment After Rejected Provision

As, for example, in the Flood, in Genesis chapter 7 and verse 22, we read these words that, refusing to enter into the ark, all in whose lustrousness the breath of life and of all that is in the dry land dies.

Move along a little further, and you come to the beginning of the Exodus chapter 12, and you read, "...as a result of the failure to fill the matter of the land, and apply blood to the roof and the lintel of the houses, we read that Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great fire in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

That was a direct consequence of the failure to accept the provision that God had given him in order to give out his feet for the judgment of God.". In Mormon chapter 21 in the Old Testament, we read that, in the passage of God's word to the people of Israel who murmured against God's provision and God's care, also against the government of God, we read that God sent fire and serpents out of the bushes and out of the grass, and many of the people were bitten, and many of them died.

As a result of their crying out to God, God raised up, through the hand of Moses, a serpent of grass, and wound it around the pole, and set the pole up in the ground, and we read that he came to pass, and whosoever had to have been bitten, licked upon the serpent and lived.

And, of course, Moses refused to accept this provision, and they died as a result of the. This is a picture to us of sin, and of the fact that sin is forced into these very bodies of ours. It is not a superficial thing.

It is something that is in the blood. It is an endless condition of heart and an attitude toward God. We must never look lightly upon sin, because sin is that which is anticipated by death of the only sinless man who ever lived.

So, let us remember that those who refused to accept the pardon of God were raped for penalty for their sin. It is rather strange to me that some people, and people who are, in some measure, familiar with their Bible, accuse teachers of being mortals, prophets of doing and of doing if they preach on the doctrine of hell.

Jesus Christ as the Chief Preacher of Hell

I'd like to mention just one fact to you. Perhaps you have not discovered this yet, but the subject of hell is touched upon fourteen times in the full gospel. Not one time do you ever find a fiery apostle to be preaching upon it.

Not once do you find the sons of thunder preaching upon the subject of hell, but the only one who ever preached on the doctrine of hell in the full gospel was the Lord Jesus Christ himself. The very same one who, on one occasion, stretched his arms out and said, "'Come unto me, all ye that labor in the heavenlies, and I will give you rest.'".

He is the one who took a little children up in his arms and said, "'Forbid them, you children, and forbid them not to come unto me, for I am such as the king of the heavens.'". He is the one who, when looking down upon the subject of heaven, he wept unashamedly over the sin, and knowing that the judgment of God was about to befall him.

And, not only that, but he lifted up his heart and he spoke these words, "'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, O Jerusalem, how often would I have gathered thee for me at the end of severer cities, and in a way that you would not!'.

And, knowing the judgment of God was about to fall upon Jerusalem in A .D. 70, when Titus, the Roman emperor, with the hordes of his army, set the city and laid the temple down, and not one stone was left upon another.

That was only a cunning shadow, or a shadow of that which is yet to come, when once again in the great tribulation period the city of Jerusalem shall be set, and there will be a judgment of God much more upon the Jewish nation like they have never known before.".

And, I want you to just remember this, my friends, that the Lord Jesus, a tender, compassionate friend of sinners, such was said of him that a bruised knee would not even break. And, often, sometimes on fishing poles, he'd duck up in a car and run over by car after car, and get his lips clutched, and his head, and his workmen.

And, the Bible says he was so tender and compassionate that a bruised knee would not even break, and he would walk in smoking flack in the next tent. This is a person who preached on the subject of hell.

Christ's Atoning Death and the Severity of Sin

I like to believe because he was the only unqualified to preach upon it, because he himself, openly upon the cross, was to endure the judgment of God against us as sinners. And, as the Son of the Living God hung upon the cross, he there opened his door to the peasants of God.

We read in 2 Corinthians 5 .21 that God made him to be sin for us. He who knows his, and I do make a righteousness of God in him, and he bore his own body, as he was on the tree, and the eternal punishment of hell and the love of God flowed over the soul of Jesus Christ.

And he, having suffered in our place, there is a rejectment that will be yours in hell if you reject or regret the salvation of God. He had been that way, and he knew what it would be like, and therefore he was qualified as the Prince of Undiscovered.

Now, I remind you of this, that the doctrine of hell is a Bible doctrine, and just because we love people, we warn you. We warn you, my friends, to flee from the wrath to come. Now, we are aware that there are people in the world today who deny the doctrine of hell, and there are also those who deny not only the reality of hell, but the eternal tariff on it.

Old Testament and New Testament Witnesses to Eternal Punishment

If you turn out of your clothes and you accept the new work as to its lastingness, it's simple to let the Word of God speak to you if you accept the Bible. Listen to just a few of the witnesses, and we'll start first from Moses.

In Deuteronomy, chapter 32, verse 22, Moses says,. Now, this is Moses who is called in the Bible the meekest man upon the face of the whole earth. And here it says, I remember on one occasion speaking to a friend of mine about the cross, and he said,.

You know, people do that. People do die without being saved. I've had the horrible experience just this past week with three acquaintances of mine being killed at one time, and I'm not to pass judgment upon them, but I was never able to get through to one of them.

I was never able to get them to receive my savior's death, and so I'm just telling you that even though there are those who make light of hell, and this man on this occasion is telling me to go to work.

He says, If everybody's going to hell that you say is going to hell, there won't be room for them. And I just happened to have this verse from Isaiah the Prophet in chapter 5 and verse 14, and listen to what it says, my friend.

It says, Therefore, hell hath enlarged herself, and hath opened her mouth without measure. Hell hath enlarged herself, and hath opened her mouth without measure. John the Baptist has, in Matthew chapter 3 and verse 12, that he will burn up the shaft with unquenchable fire.

So, we have these witnesses, my friend, inspired by the Spirit of God that testify to the reality of hell. But then, there are those who accept the fact that there is hell, but they call it a temporary punishment where one sinful goes, and after so many years of punishment they are given another chance.

But this is not what the Word of God teaches. Now, listen to Matthew chapter 18 and verse 8. We read of those who are to be cast into everlasting fire. In Matthew chapter 25 and verse 46, we read that these will go away into everlasting punishment.

In Mark chapter 3 and verse 29, we read of those who are in danger of eternal damnation. In 2 Thessalonians 1 verse 9, we read of those who shall be punished with everlasting destruction. And in Jude verse 7, we read of those who, even at this present moment, are suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

May I just pass along a bit of information to you? The Greek word in the original, in which the New Testament has been translated, the word eternal in connection with everlasting life, is found 47 times, and the identical word is used seven times, of the death penalty of the wicked.

The same word you find in John 3 .16, my friends, that promises you everlasting life again and through the law, should be a death penalty if the Spirit of God uses the speech of retribution for evil deeds.

Yes, the Word of God purely teaches that hell is a place, that it is a condition, it is a reality. It is not a place where you may serve a sentence and then be delivered. I must admit this morning that, if I could offer to you the prospect as an unsaved person, that if you were to go on in your unbelief and die without having received the Lord Jesus Christ, or if the Son of God were to come, as we believe He might well do today, those would go on in salvation in their faith.

But, my friends, if I could offer to you the prospect of spending a million years in hell and satisfying the righteous judgment of God against you, as at times He rejects us, to be released, I could preach on hell almost with as much relish as I could on the love of God and as much enthusiasm and zeal.

If I could offer you the prospect of a two-million-year sentence in hell and then released, I could preach on it joyfully, my friends. But the Word of God holds out little but possibility for anyone who rejects the Lord Jesus Christ as saved.

Hades, Sheol, and the Grave

Now, I'd like to pass along just a bit of information to you, and I don't want to get bogged down here this morning because I am not as much involved this morning and concerned about instructing you as I am about warning you.

You see, I am not told proportionately my responsibility to proclaim the truth of the Word of God. My responsibility is not to save people, but to offer them eternal life in faith in the Lord Jesus. But it is much as in connection with the ad in the paper yesterday, which I suspect some of you read, in connection with this subject of hell that we're speaking on this morning, the question we raise, and I'm sure some of you would answer this, is Hades the grave?

Is Hades the grave? Now, the reason for that is that there is a religious sect in America today who thinks that there is no such thing as a literal hell, that whenever you die, a spirit body all goes to the grave.

And they try and teach that the place in the New Testament which is called hell is nothing but the grave. Now, here in Luke chapter 16 verse 23, whenever you read these words that in hell, the lips of his eyes being in for a myth, which is a Greek word, Hades, which is a Greek equivalent of the Old Testament word sheol, and just remember that.

Now, we've said down here that we want to be very careful so you can understand. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word sheol is found 65 times. There is no other word used in the New Testament for this case of punishment.

Now, this Hebrew word sheol is translated by three different words in the Hebrew, and it is translated 31 times by the word hell, it is translated 31 times by the word grave, and three times by the word pit.

The fact that the organized version in the translation was written with the word sheol by the word grave is a very unfortunate translation, and simply because the context will not admit of any such translation.

The word sheol in the Old Testament is never correctly translated by the word grave. Now, let me give you a few simple clues. Scripture reveals that sheol is a place of salt. You never hear of anybody weeping in their grave.

The grave is not a place of sorrow. It's a place where the body rots and goes back to the dust. In 2 Samuel 22, verse 6, the songs of sheol come from the mouth. This is repeated in Psalm 18, verse 5. Psalm 116, verse 3, the pains of sheol that hold upon me.

It's a place under which the wicked are turned, as we just saw in Psalm 19, verse 7, or 9 and 17. In Isaiah chapter 14, verse 9, we read that sheol from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy summit.

In Ezekiel 32, verse 21, the stone among the mighty shall speak to thee out of the midst of sheol. Now, very simply, the Old Testament word sheol was simply a word used when referring to the place of the departed, to the supposed yet died, with no reference to the suffering or repress, although sometimes suffering is implied.

And, simply, in the Old Testament, sheol is the place of the departed, to the consoled of those who died. When you come to the New Testament, the word hades, as said a moment ago, is a deep equivalent of the Old Testament word sheol, and in the New Testament, hades again is simply the place of the departed spirit of those who have died, and without reference either to punishment or not.

Gehenna, Hades, and the Final Judgment

Now, let me show you something. In the New Testament, again, and I think this is really unusual, and yet to me it's a mark of inspiration, that the word hell is translated from three different words in the New Testament.

One is hades, and the other is gehenna, and the other is carcass. The word carcass is used only one time in the New Testament. In fact, in 2 Peter, chapter 2, verse 4, is the place where those angels whose special skin is referred to in that passage are confined to be reserved unto the day of judgment.

But now, in the New Testament, listen to this. The word hell is translated ten times by the word hades, and it is translated twelve times by the word gehenna, or from the word gehenna. So, they're distinctly adjacent.

When you come to the New Testament, remember this, that here in this passage, when you read that in hell, he lifted his eyes, you cannot call that the grave. It is absolutely impossible to make this place the grave.

Now, I'll tell you a simple solution to this passage right here. Whenever God speaks to man, he speaks to man so that he can understand. When he wants to impart knowledge to man, he speaks to man in a language that man in the past can tell.

If he wants to impart spiritual truth, he uses earthly language. And so, you see, whenever you read of the rich man here being in possession of his faculties, in torment, he's loaded dead. That whenever God speaks of the spirit and soul, he uses the parts of the body to attest the truth of him.

Now, this is perfectly obvious. So, if one had any sense at all, they could understand that the rich man's body had gone to the grave, and it was dirt, and his tongue was like thirst for water. But neither could he see with his lips alive, because he remembered his body was in a state of decomposition already.

So, he was going back to the earth in a big way. And so, when we read the rich man was tormented in the flames, we look at how often he saw Abraham and Lazarus in his bosom, and he could speak. The Lord is using the components, parts of the body.

He was speaking of the condition of the spirit and soul, and the man was in a place of conscious torment. Now, nobody ever hurts in the grave. Anybody who has any sense at all knows that you can't hurt in the grave.

If you don't believe it, go to the funeral home and stick a pin in a cork. It's easier than hurting. It's plain, simple language that God is using here. And remember that Hades never means a grave. It means a place of the departed spirit, or those who have died.

That's how you receive Christ's name. Very briefly now, we're going to move on to the next subject, but further wording. The deceased are to be held in the lake of fire, or sent to death. As the Word of God teaches, at the meeting of hundred deaths, the body goes to the grave but before that, the spirit and soul is in this place called Hell, and it's a place of conscious torment.

That's the resurrection of the judgment of damnation. A spirit and soul are resurrected out of the Hell, and the body out of the grave. We, the nations, stand a spirit, soul, and body before the judgment of the great white grave.

The distinction between Hell and the lake of fire is simply this. This is the temporary abode of the wicked soul and spirit of those who reject Jesus Christ as Savior. This is the eternal abode, and the distinction between Hades and Gehenna is simply this.

Hell is Hades, the lake of fire is Gehenna. It is a place where the world died, Lord, and the fire did not break. Hades simply speaks of a place somewhere in the subterranean parts of the earth underneath us to which spirits and souls of those who died without Christ go.

Hell is the condition that they are enduring or passing through, and if you read carefully, you'll see that while the geographical location of the rich man was Hell, his physical condition was not the sort of Gehenna itself.

He was tormented, and he was a possession of all of his passages. But now, we want to look at this story of the rich man for a few moments, and whenever I did, the first question that arose in my mind was this.

Why the Rich Man Went to Hell

Why did the rich man go to Hell? I don't believe intelligent people deliberately go to Hell, but the question that I sought to answer was, why would a man like this go to Hell if he could have stayed out?

And, I sought to learn the answer by what the Word says about him. It is interesting to notice that we know nothing about the rich man but what was given to us in verse 19, and all it says is that he was rich.

Secondly, he was a good dresser, and thirdly, he liked to live it up. Given to us in this language, there was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and he lived comfortably every day.

This is the typical of a person who is so enjoyed with material possessions, so proficiently occupied with the things that he had, and trying to enjoy life that he didn't take time to think about dying until it was too late.

He liked that some people of whom I have heard a lot were a little peaceful, poor folks. He was a living to think about dying, preparing for the future for some people, but not taking the time to prepare for the present.

This man was a person who was so completely occupied with his possessions. He was a man who liked to live it up. He liked to live every, every day as if it was a brand new day. He had a basic desire of a human body, and all he knew about the man was that he was rich, he was a good dresser, and he liked to live it up.

Well, it's obvious that the man doesn't go to hell because he's rich, and nobody would hardly, even in the king's authority of a person, go into hell because they liked to dress neatly, and so he turned by the process of deliberation to the last statement, which is that he fared conscientiously in the Christian arrival.

Didn't the man go to hell because he fared conscientiously, and the answer is yes and no, and that's not to confuse you. But what I'm saying is that living it up and faring conscientiously does not necessarily make a person go to hell.

The Danger of Being Too Busy to Consider Eternity

But, again, I remind you that the problem that comes from a garden of people in the world today, there are too busy living to think about dying, and some of them, if they have the right of being so busy living, will never get around to dying.

When I was talking to my friend, Ron White, who for ten years or so had built a corporate agent, he had paralyzed all the way down, none of the members of his body worked, and we were having a good time of fellowship yesterday, and we were speaking about spiritual matters, and we were talking about death.

He looked at me with a smile on his face, and he said, there's one thing about death, it always keeps me peppermint by the ear. He said, you go on and hold out as long as you can, but I'll be around someday.

And that's true. It's a pretty mundane word for God, but that's what it is for judgment, my friend. And so, you see, this man was so busy living that he didn't take time to think about dying until he was already with God.

He went in this passage, he becomes missionary-minded. I would not have known to be hating his brothers, except when he got to hell, he wanted Abraham to say, well, I just wanted to warn his brothers not to come to this place.

Now, that's a warning to you instigated sinners who always like to say, well, if I die and go to hell, I have no company. The verse says a man doesn't want company. If I was in a place like hell, if I wanted any company, I'd like to have my relatives there to comfort me.

It ain't worth them to come. And not only that, my friends, but I believe the Bible teaches us some possibility that in hell, we're in solitary confinement. And so, if you could have a visitor, you'd better be able to see them.

In order that all the patients confinement, I am so grateful that those things that make hell so awful and such a terrible place of punishment, that oftentimes that thing which keeps some people being saved will be the one thing that will work, and that it has been made to our own for the peace and intimacy of it will be the infatiable hunger for that thing for which now you would give up your soul.

Many a person today is going on in sin, resenting the salvation of God because of sin, the loss of the flesh, the various other things, and they can't live without it. But I warn you, my friends, when you get to hell, whatever sin that is keeping you from being saved, you will not be able to enjoy it in hell.

And I believe when you say, first, and you say, second, the Lord said in Latter-day Scriptures, even war, and children of my God, I am forbidden in this place, I believe in the Lord, I believe that the Lord is the Lord, and I believe that if you hunger for the thing you live and fall on earth and die to get to hell because you couldn't give it up, you will want it stronger, stronger, stronger, and more and more the realization that you will never be able to have it.

And I feel I warn you today to plead for a better aftertime. First of Mark, chapter 9, I want to show you something about work in the world of the fallen world. In the ninth chapter of Mark, I told you that occasionally, before we get here, that every place here where this word, El, lives is Gehenna.

The word is Gehenna, a place of retribution for evil deeds, a place of constant punishment. Now, listen to the forty-third verse of the ninth chapter of the Gospel of Mark. It says here, "...if by hand it will be, and Jesus is doing the teaching again," remember?

"...if by hand it will be, and the opponent will be too strong to cut it off, for the better these enemies of life may, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched.

Where there were a dike not, and the fire is not quenched. For if thy foot, or hand be, cut it off, it is better to be in a hole, into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched.

Where there were a dike not, and the fire is not quenched. I want you to notice the three members of the Bible that the Lord Jesus speaks of here to warn us of the danger of hell. And, here, remember again, it is not, "'Hey thee,' it is a punishment of Gehenna that the Lord Jesus is talking about.

He says, "'A place where the word dies not, and the fire is never quenched.'". Now, if you don't believe that the Bible is relevant, if you don't believe it's up-to-date, I want to show you something.

If this passage had been written yesterday, it would be no more up-to-date than it is right now. It hasn't been written almost 2 ,000 years ago. So, be careful. Remember the rich man who, in fullness of his eyes, thirsting and thirsty for suffering, he went there because he was so busy living it up.

Worldly Amusement and Spiritual Distraction

Now, what we need to learn, my friends, there are a lot of people in America today who might go to hell because they're rich and undaunted people. Not many people are going to hell in America today because they're robbers and murderers in form, but I believe American citizens in the main are going to hell because they are just busy.

Busy. Busy. Notice the three members of the body involved. Jesus says in verse 43, "'If thy hand attendeth,' that's something to do. In verse 45, "'If thy foot attendeth,' somewhere to do it. And down in verse 47, "'If thine eye attendeth,' something to look at.".

And if you don't believe the Word of God is relevant, what three things in the world in America today have keeped men and women so completely occupied? They have never had a talk about heaven or hell.

It is simply this. They are doing something, and if they're not doing something, they're going from there. And if they're not doing something, they're going from there. They're looking at something. But if you don't believe they are going from there, you'd better ask them on the highway and they'll run over you.

If you don't believe they're doing something, you watch them. And if you don't believe they're looking at something and they're not doing anything or going anywhere, go out in the night through the week to visit people, and you'll see when you drive up, there are nobody home.

There are no lights in the house. And you see that den blow over the corner of the den, and the one-eyed monster has got them completely mad in their eyes. And there they sit. You can't take people to hell.

That's why. You don't worry about going to hell as a result of killing somebody. What you need to do is to worry about going to hell because you're so busy doing something and going somewhere and watching something, you don't have time to think about these things.

That'll get you to hell quicker than anything else. Why do you think there's so much amusement in the world? And I'm not growing up in a time where you can do just anything else. But I do remember this.

In my school days, that's the word we used. We used to meditate and to think. But if I put the negative T, it's A-M-U. Abuse means not to think. And why in heaven's name do you think there's some new gadget invented every day?

Something for you to do. Somewhere for you to go. Something for you to look at. It has a paralyzing effect upon you. And the first thing you know, you're gone. You take the average young man in America today who's married with a good job and he has a wife and children and he works hard day after day after day every day of the week and that person is exactly alike.

The only difference in a man's life in every day of the week is on the calendar. Every order of the sun is exactly alike. He turns the prigs off in the morning, sets the dance on Sunday afternoon. He goes fishing on Saturday.

Comes Monday morning, gets up, gets the sleep out of his eyes, gets his wife good by him and goes off to fight the business world. Comes back in the evening, commuting or driving his car, comes into the house and kisses his wife good, he's locked down on the chair.

And as he gets up there, he slips and he pushes his shoes off and he pops his feet up on the floor and he's pouring out 350 feet of soap. And down he goes into hell with a goddamned heart attack. He hasn't harmed a soul in the world.

He's one of the best natives you ever had. You agree? Be careful, my friend, that while you're good for doing something, you don't go to hell while you're busy doing something and looking at things. You see what you're talking about?

This is what you're facing. If you're an honest sinner here today, you're going to admit that this is a terrible world where sometimes even Christian people who are saved by the grace of God feel like screaming out of the top of their voice, Stop this merry-go-round for heaven's sake and let me out.
