Well, thanks for being here tonight. I count this a privilege to be able to tell you how God saved me. I want to read the passage in the Word of God that was used in my awakening. Revelation chapter 20 and reading at verse 11.
Revelation 20 and verse 11,. And I saw a great white throne, And him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God.
And the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, And death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them.
And they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire, This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast, was cast into the lake of fire.
These words have very special meaning to me. They were read in the gospel meeting on a Friday night, April 1st, 1938. And I, as a poor lost sinner, sat in that meeting. I knew I was lost. I knew I was helpless.
I tried so hard to believe. I tried so hard to get saved. I didn't know how. And that night, as the preaching went on, I was very certain that I would be in the lake of fire forever and ever. You know, I don't usually say this very much, but I actually shook.
There was a man sitting beside me by the name of Jones. He was a coal dealer in the city of Toronto. And after the meeting, he told the brethren the chair was shaking where that boy was sitting. I was going to perish.
I was going to hell. Oh, what a reality. And helpless. I could do nothing. I can tell you that that was my experience. I was absolutely helpless. It dawned on me far quicker than these words will ever tell you.
I don't have to do anything. The Lord Jesus did everything. He died for me. I never knew that until that moment. That when he was on that cross, it was in my place. It was in my stead, bearing shame and scoffing rude.
In my place, condemned. And he stood, sealed my pardon with his blood. And I could truly say that night, and I've been saying it in all the years since, Hallelujah. What a Savior. I would have to say tonight that there are some here that have no salvation.
And my heart goes out to you. I feel for you. What an awful tragedy if you should miss Christ altogether and perish forever. Could it be possible that in the Jackson Gospel Hall, there are some priceless, precious souls who will be lost for all eternity?
God grant it may not be you. That you may, as a lost sinner, take your place tonight as guilty and helpless. You can do nothing. But he did everything. I love those words. They are the most precious words I know in all the Bible.
It is finished. Christ has died and God with him is satisfied. And now he's ready to forgive. The simple terms, believe and live. And that Friday night, April 1st, 1938, for the first time I understood why the Lord Jesus hung on the cross.
And with wonder in my soul, I could thank him. He died for me. He bore my sins. He suffered in my place. And when I understood that, that he had actually died in my room instead, I couldn't help but trust him.
That thought came to me, all I have to do is trust him. But when that thought came to me, I had already trusted him. I couldn't help it. I couldn't help but trust the Savior who would love me so that he would die in my room instead.
I walked home that night alone. I got to a big dark park. I stopped in the middle of that dark park. And for the first time in my life, I became a worshiper. I didn't even know if you had said to me what worship is, I wouldn't even have known.
But, oh, I became a worshiper. And in that dark park, the truth was so precious to me that the Lord Jesus had hung on the cross in my place and died for my sins. And I had trusted him as my own Savior.
How many years ago was that? I think I'll have to ask some of the brethren how many years ago it was. It was 1938. When for the first time I understood that the Savior died for me. Are you saved? Do you know Christ is your own Savior?
Have you trusted Him? When? You could trust Him tonight and be saved for all eternity. Oh, what a simple trust it is. He did it all. He did it perfectly. He suffered in my room instead. He bore my sins.
He bore my punishment. The torment and the fire my eyes shall never see. It is enough that Jesus died and that He died for me. That's an amazing truth to my soul. After all these years. That was 1938.
How many years ago was that? I'm losing track. Seventy-five years. Imagine that. And I'm still here. Seventy-five years later. And oh, how precious it is. How real it is. How true it is. My Savior who took my sins and died in my place.
Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned He stood. Sealed my pardon with His blood. And I say from my heart tonight, hallelujah. What a Savior. Is He your Savior? Have you trusted Him? When?
You could trust Him tonight. There's nothing left for you to do. He has done it all. Christ has died and God with Him is satisfied. I love those precious words of the Savior on the cross. It is finished.
It stands finished. Perfectly done. Nothing left to do. Christ has died and God with Him is satisfied. And now He's ready to forgive, in simple terms, believe and live. Just to think that you could be saved for all eternity by a simple act of trust.
Trust what? Yourself? No. Trust your works? No. Trust your prayers? No. Trust the bleeding Christ on Calvary. Trust the Savior who bore your sins. My friend, the Bible says, The Lord God laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
If you trusted Him, you would know that. And you'd be able to say, my sins are gone. My judgment is passed. The torment and the fire mine eyes shall never see. It is enough. Oh, I say this from my heart tonight.
After many years. That was 1938, that Friday night, April 1st, 1938, when God saved me. It's real. It's lasted. It's just as genuine and real tonight as it was those many years ago. Christ has died and God with Him is satisfied.
And oh, I am satisfied. I'm satisfied with my substitute. I'm satisfied with my Savior. Are you? Do you have Christ? Do you know Him as your own? As your substitute? As your sin bearer? You could know that tonight.
And be saved. And have your sins all forgiven. God grant it may be so.
