- Girls gone Bible just butchered the Lord's Prayer the other day. Take a look at these comments over on X.
- 00:06
- Gross. Does anyone on DJT's team vet these people? Textbook blasphemy. Sacrilege.
- 00:12
- Oh my no words. Well, this is quite disturbing. But what just happened? How did they butcher the
- 00:18
- Lord's Prayer? Is it even possible to do something like that? What is the Lord's Prayer even about in the first place?
- 00:24
- We're about to get into it. So here we go. Welcome back to Wise Disciple.
- 00:31
- My name is Nate Sala and I'm helping you become the effective Christian that Jesus wants you to be. There was a moment before he sent out his disciples to go proclaim the gospel and he told them,
- 00:39
- Behold, I'm sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. So be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. That's the spirit behind this ministry.
- 00:46
- Make sure to like, sub, and share this one around, but only if it blesses you. Amen. God, we thank you.
- 00:52
- We thank you that your will always prevails. So, all right, these two ladies.
- 01:00
- So let me back up. I'm not familiar with Girls Gone Bible. Clever title, by the way.
- 01:05
- So I don't know what their denomination is or their convictions over certain doctrine.
- 01:11
- I don't know any of this. So it looks like they're praying for Donald Trump at a Trump rally. Now look above here to what
- 01:18
- Jay says. So Jay says Girls Gone Bible completely butchered the Lord's Prayer saying your will be done in the life of President Trump as it is in heaven.
- 01:28
- Yikes, welcome to North Korea. Okay. Not sure what the
- 01:34
- North Korea thing is about, but let's take a look at the prayer. Thank you God that it's your will.
- 01:41
- Your kingdom come Lord. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
- 01:48
- In America as it is in heaven. In the life of President Donald Trump as it is in heaven.
- 01:58
- So that's where they butchered it, right? Because they took the
- 02:03
- Lord's Prayer, which is not about America. It's not about Donald Trump and altered it to include both.
- 02:11
- Okay, I see. Can you do that? Is that off -limits or untoward for the
- 02:19
- Christian to do in prayer? You know, we're gonna get into it in a moment, but let's finish the video. And we just want to take a moment and honor
- 02:28
- President Donald Trump. We thank you for your relentless love and devotion you have given to this country and we bless you and we bless your beautiful family.
- 02:43
- And if we could all just bow our heads down to pray. Okay. So that's it.
- 02:51
- And again, I mean some of the comments, my goodness. Jesus weeps. So now, you know the end is near.
- 02:58
- DC is Sodom and Gomorrah. That's sacrilegious. This is why this from Christian Pampa.
- 03:04
- This is why generations do not believe in God. This cult uses God's name yet. We still do not tax the church.
- 03:11
- There is no such thing as separation of church and state tax the church. Gee, too many wine coolers.
- 03:17
- Gosh, this is icky. Like a Lenny Riefenstahl video of a satanic song being sung backwards on a country music station.
- 03:24
- Bad times. Wow. All right. I mean some of these comments are absolutely brutal against these young ladies.
- 03:32
- Okay. Well, so that's how X feels about it. Now, I'm gonna ask you the same question.
- 03:38
- How do you feel about it? And be real with me for a moment. Okay, let me know in the comments. Are you on board with something like what we just saw from those ladies?
- 03:47
- But also tell me why, right? Are you on board? Are you not on board? I'm curious if there's more that we can do at this community than just regurgitate a bunch of spittle, which is what we just witnessed on X, right?
- 04:00
- Is there some kind of biblical support against something like this? Okay. Well, let's get into the word, shall we?
- 04:08
- So prayer has a specific set of functions. But before we get into all of that, what is prayer, right?
- 04:14
- Let's just start with a basic definition right out of the gate. What is prayer? Well, prayer is simply an activity wherein we speak to the
- 04:23
- Lord and we also speak about the Lord. How do I know that? Well, look at the first time that the activity of prayer is mentioned.
- 04:31
- It's not identified by name. It's identified by what the people would do. Look at this, verse 26.
- 04:37
- To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to, here it is, call upon the name of the
- 04:46
- Lord. Now, notice in this passage, we're confronted by a dichotomy of sorts in the family of Adam.
- 04:55
- You have, on the one hand, the line of Seth who was righteous before God, and then you have everybody else, right?
- 05:02
- Notably marked by Cain who went a completely different route altogether and killed his brother. And we know that because literally the verse before that, that is called out, right?
- 05:12
- Verse 25. So Seth is noted here, and Enosh is also identified. Now, Enosh is important because, so if you take a closer look at the
- 05:22
- Hebrew here, you're gonna notice that there's a bit of ambiguity in the language, such that it seems to suggest that Enosh is the one who began to call upon the name of the
- 05:33
- Lord. Okay, that's a rabbit trail for another time. But this right here is considered to be the first time that the activity of prayer is mentioned in the
- 05:42
- Bible. As a matter of fact, the next time that the name of the Lord is raised, it's brought up in a prayer given by Lamech, who is in the line of Seth and Enosh.
- 05:52
- So if the first prayer is basically calling on the name of the
- 05:57
- Lord, so that's the phrase, what can we infer about this? Well, the
- 06:03
- Bible doesn't clearly tell us much, but what we can know, it's moving forward from this initial activity, is people started talking to God.
- 06:13
- God would sometimes talk back as well. So I'm kind of going sweepingly here, but this communication to God is something that appears to be done with great reverence and respect and seeks to align to God's plans and his purposes.
- 06:31
- So notice Abraham speaking to God here. This is Genesis 18 22. So the men turned from there and went towards Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the
- 06:40
- Lord. Then Abraham drew near and said, will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
- 06:47
- Now, let's not move too quickly past this phrase, Abraham drew near.
- 06:54
- What does that mean, right? How did he draw near to God?
- 07:00
- Well, the understanding is Abraham is not only drawing closer to God physically, but he's also drawing closer to God intimately.
- 07:08
- He desires to seek a more intimate conversation with God, so he draws near.
- 07:13
- Does that make sense? But he's also, look what he's doing. He's interceding on behalf of those at Sodom, right?
- 07:21
- You see that? So look down here in verse 25. This is what Abraham asks the Lord, shall not the judge of all the earth do what is just?
- 07:29
- Right? And what he's referring to is putting the righteous to death alongside the wicked, you know?
- 07:34
- But what he's doing here is he's respecting God's will and also appealing to his justice, and also his mercies, right?
- 07:44
- And so if you continue to read, Abraham will do this again for Abimelech later.
- 07:50
- And it appears to be the consistent practice of prayer across the Bible. So if you're noting a key definition and key characteristics, prayer is intimate communication to God.
- 08:04
- It's done with great reverence and respect for him, and is a means of drawing near to the
- 08:11
- Lord and aligning the one to God's will. This can be done on behalf of others, right?
- 08:18
- So that can be a goal for that. That's called intercessory prayer. Or it can just be done as a request for God's provision.
- 08:26
- In other words, to provide what we need in that moment. This is what Abraham called the mountain where God provided the lamb for the sacrifice instead of Isaac.
- 08:36
- He called it what? The Lord will provide, right? This is also what the
- 08:42
- Israelites had to learn in the wilderness with the manna that fell from heaven every single day. But prayer can also be simply done as an act of worship and even service to God.
- 08:54
- Now, I say all of these things because watch this. So this is Matthew chapter 6.
- 09:00
- Jesus arrives, you know, now by the time we get to the New Testament, Jesus arrives in the first century to show the people of God how to live in relationship with him again.
- 09:09
- How to live, move, and breathe in the new authority, in the new reality of God's kingdom here on earth.
- 09:16
- And part of that entails prayer. So watch how Jesus characterizes this.
- 09:21
- I'm actually going to start back up here. So Jesus says, When you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners that they may be seen by others.
- 09:33
- Truly I say to you, they have received their reward. Stop. All right? What is the reward of the hypocrite when they pray?
- 09:41
- Is it intimacy with God? Is it reverent communication with the Creator? Nope. It's that others will see them and how righteous they appear to be.
- 09:52
- All right, you tracking with this? Verse 6. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your
- 09:58
- Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
- 10:04
- Now, there's the intimacy component, right? There's what it looks like to draw near to God in prayer.
- 10:13
- Go be alone. Go be intimate with the Father who is in secret. Okay, verse 7.
- 10:20
- And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
- 10:26
- Don't be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray then like this.
- 10:34
- Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Now there's the reverence, right? There's the reverence and the respect for the one who is holy.
- 10:44
- Amen? He is the most holy. When He appeared to the Israelites in their temple,
- 10:50
- He only did it in the holiest of holies, right? The holy of holies. Why?
- 10:56
- Because God is holy. He's hallowed. Right? Holy is His name. Verse 10.
- 11:02
- Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
- 11:07
- And there's the part where the person praying aligns to the will of God. Are you seeing the pattern?
- 11:15
- Repeat it. Right? This is not something that, you know, Jesus invented in Matthew chapter 6.
- 11:22
- This is the consistent pattern of God's people of how they would pray throughout the entire
- 11:29
- Scripture. It's just that here, Jesus is concisely showing us the pattern, you know?
- 11:35
- If we have the eyes to see it. Look at this, verse 11. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
- 11:43
- And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. And there's the provision, right?
- 11:50
- The protection and the provision of God can be given to us as we requested of Him when we seek
- 11:56
- Him intimately. Now, this is the beginning of a—that would be a great study to do on prayer itself, you know?
- 12:04
- I think you have some of the bigger pieces here. And the pattern here to do an amazing one on your own or in your small groups, right?
- 12:12
- But the reason I'm bringing all of this up is, did the Girls Gone Bible do something wrong? Based on what we know about prayer and its function, did they butcher the
- 12:24
- Lord's prayer? I don't think so. Look again at what Jesus says right at the top of verse 9.
- 12:30
- He says, pray then like this. Does He say, always recite this prayer verbatim and never deviate?
- 12:38
- No, He says, pray like this. Pray in a similar manner to this.
- 12:44
- In other words, follow this prayer pattern. Why? Because the pattern did not actually originate here.
- 12:52
- It originated long ago with the people of God running all the way back to the book of Genesis.
- 12:58
- The people of God have always, in some respects, prayed this way. They were the ones who followed this pattern.
- 13:06
- Lean into intimacy, show great reverence and respect to God, align to His will, which, by the way, in many cases includes interceding on behalf of others according to God's will, right?
- 13:21
- Seek His provision, right? It's all there. It's right here. That's what these ladies did.
- 13:30
- They took the Lord's prayer and the desire of the person of God that God's will be done here on this earth as it is in heaven, and they asked
- 13:40
- God to apply it uniquely through the inner workings of this country. They asked God to apply it through the leader of this nation now, who is
- 13:49
- Donald Trump. What's wrong with that? I don't see anything wrong with that.
- 13:57
- As a matter of fact, what these ladies did was something that I've taught my boys in the past, which, you know, now that I'm thinking about it, maybe we should probably return to it again, right?
- 14:08
- And that is taking the Lord's prayer and adding words to it specifically to apply to their own lives as well as their own circles of influence, right?
- 14:19
- This is what I would do with my boys. And what that does is it retains the spirit of the prayer, and it makes it incredibly specific to the one praying it, you know?
- 14:30
- So, I mean, if Girls Gone Bible butchered the Lord's prayer, I guess I'm butchering it as well.
- 14:36
- I guess my sons are. I guess my family is. Who knew? Well, those are my thoughts.
- 14:41
- Again, I don't know these ladies, you know? I don't know where they stand in other areas.
- 14:47
- This is the first time that I've ever seen them speak, and perhaps we will disagree over other issues, right?
- 14:52
- But on this one, I don't think they did anything wrong. As a matter of fact, if you look at their full prayer, it was moving.
- 15:01
- Well, anyway, what do you think? Do you think I'm on to something here or just way off? Let me know in the comments below. I'd love to get your thoughts there.
