The Importance of Attributes- Message by Pastor Braden Patterson for the Magic Valley Baptist Association meeting on 10/16/21
God is to be worshiped as He declares Himself to be, And because He is who He is, He is Worthy! Rev.4:8-11, 5:1-14, Phil. 2:3-11
- 00:00
- Well before we jump right into the message I just want to tell you guys it's an absolute privilege to have everybody here at this building and Opportunity to go through some texts with each other and to preach on the text
- 00:11
- I've selected today with us here It is a little bit different of a challenge thinking about it because there's pastors here in this building
- 00:17
- And so it's kind of strange being a pastor preaching with other pastors listening But it's gonna be the same message if there wasn't any pastors here either way, so that's the that's the
- 00:27
- God -glorifying thing that we're gonna be sticking to the Word of God alone for this But before we begin I'm gonna go ahead and start with the word of prayer
- 00:34
- I would invite you to please start turning to your way to Revelation chapter 4 as we go And I know you might be thinking the back of your head.
- 00:40
- He's not talking about eschatology today But we're gonna be focusing on worshiping
- 00:47
- God is what we're gonna be focusing on here today So be keeping that in the back of your mind But just let us open it in a word prayer as you turn that way with your
- 00:54
- Bibles or your respective devices And if you don't have something like that with you today, there should be a Bible in arms like this church
- 01:01
- So please Revelation 4 and let us let us begin with the word of prayer Lord God as Was already made it pray the
- 01:09
- Lord. I just want to lift up each one of these churches that are here today Lord God I would just pray that the things that they are going through then
- 01:16
- The praises that they have or that you would hear those things that you'd be glorified in those things Lord And we want your will be done in those churches
- 01:23
- Lord God I would just pray that you bless each one of the men here that have the privilege
- 01:29
- To be able to preach upon your name and be built upon your rock and to go through your word
- 01:36
- Lord, I just pray that you keep them true to the word as well as myself in that area Lord God, I just pray that the those churches that they just might continually focusing on Worshipping you as you describe yourself would be in your word
- 01:49
- Lord and that you would be glorified in it all Lord lift up this message today and Lord I would just pray that it be anchored upon your scripture
- 01:57
- And that there would if there's error that is said that no one would hear it And no one would remember it, but the only thing that would be remembered would be your word about all else
- 02:04
- Lord We just want you will be done. We say this in your name Jesus Christ Amen. Amen.
- 02:10
- So turn with me to Revelation chapter 4 and Just as a precursor as we're turning there
- 02:20
- My face is red because I was out evangelizing yesterday for Eight to ten hours at Pocatello LDS to open temple open house
- 02:29
- And so that's why my face might be a little red and another thing is my throat literally feels like it's on fire right now
- 02:34
- I'm talking so long. So I'm like you need to take a pause to cough. I apologize for that But also just in Revelation chapter 4 where we're going
- 02:42
- It's been a habit of mine as we're have the opportunity to live in Twin Falls and to travel out here to Hagerman With how
- 02:49
- I'm situated with work and whatnot I get the privilege of having a 40 -minute drive to to really meditate and pray upon what the message is going to be
- 02:58
- And so usually in that time there'll be prayer that's consistent of that and I'll usually have my wife read my sermon notes as I drive
- 03:03
- And so as she was reading it today, she got done reading it and and she was like great This is gonna be a long message
- 03:10
- And so I will try to cut down a little bit by for us so that we can be able to get lunch
- 03:16
- But when she says that she can recognize that it's going to be a long message I was like, okay, I got maybe maybe think about this a little bit more, but we're gonna be in the
- 03:24
- Revelation Let me open up here Revelation Chapter 4 verses 8 through 11 and we're gonna be really focusing in on that that portion of Scripture But we're gonna be also going into chapter 5 and we're gonna read verses 1 through 14 because we see
- 03:40
- God being worshiped in that I think it's really important for us as church members and church goers to see how
- 03:47
- God is worshiped So that we can mimic that worship to him So let us read in Revelation chapter 4 verses 8 through Revelation chapter 5 verses 1 through 14.
- 04:00
- So this is gonna be a mighty portion of text text So it says in verse 8 and the four living creatures each one of them having six wings are full of eyes around and within And day and night they do not cease to say
- 04:14
- Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God the Almighty Who was and who is and who is to come and when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who sits on?
- 04:26
- the throne to him who lives forever and ever The 24 elders will fall down before him who sits on the throne and will worship him who lives forever
- 04:37
- And ever and will cast their crowns before the throne saying
- 04:43
- Worthy are thou our Lord and our God to receive glory and honor and power for thou didst create all things and Because of thy will they existed and were created
- 04:57
- Let's continue on into chapter 5 here It says and I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne of book written inside and on the back
- 05:05
- A seal a sealed up with seven seals and I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice who is worthy to open the book and to break in seals and No one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the book
- 05:24
- Or to look into it and I began to weep Greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it and one of the elders said to me stop weeping
- 05:36
- Behold the lion that is from the tribe of Judah the roots of David has overcome so as to open the book and in seven seals
- 05:46
- And I saw between the throne with a four living creatures and the elders and lambs standing as if slain
- 05:53
- Having seven horns and seven eyes which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth
- 05:59
- He came and he took it out of the right hand of him who sat on the throne And when he had taken the book the four living creatures and the twenty -four elders fell down before the lamb having each one
- 06:11
- Apart and a golden bowl full of incense which are the prayers of the
- 06:17
- Saints and they sang a new song saying Worthy are thou to take the book and to break its seals
- 06:25
- For thou was slain and did purchase for God with thy blood Men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation and now has made them to be a kingdom and priests to our
- 06:39
- God and they will reign upon the earth And I looked and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne the living creatures and the elders and numbers of them
- 06:50
- Was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands saying with a loud voice Worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and my honor and glory and blessings and Every created thing which is a heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea and all the things in them
- 07:12
- I heard them saying to him who sits on the throne and the lamb be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever and For the creatures kept saying amen and the elders fell down and worshipped
- 07:28
- Like I said, this is this is a this is a cool tax This is something that would take a long long time if we wanted to dissect everything in here
- 07:36
- Worship here today. So let us pray one more time before we jump right into Revelation chapter 4 verses 8 through 11
- 07:45
- Lord God, we just Thank you so much for this text in here God To worship you as you are
- 07:52
- Lord and God I would pray that this text would force each one of us to worship you more properly and worship you in the proper manner and Worship you
- 07:59
- Lord as you described yourself to be Lord that it might just have us Give us a deeper theology in this area a deeper
- 08:07
- Christology that we might know your son Jesus Christ Even more today Lord that we might worship him as God in flesh
- 08:14
- Lord this is only and can only be done by being built on your foundation or and so God I just pray that we be planted upon it here today and throughout these next coming weeks and months and years
- 08:26
- We go back to our churches Lord and continue to present each other with the gospel.
- 08:32
- This is good news that we have So Lord once again, let you be glorified today
- 08:37
- Lord Just your will be done. We just say these things in your name Jesus Christ, amen
- 08:46
- So Before we begin in here church I want to go back to verses 8 and 11 and help us understand kind of a little bit what's going on here for a context
- 08:55
- This is if you don't know, this is the book of Revelation not the book of Revelations It's one singular not only that it was written by John So on and so forth.
- 09:05
- There's a lot of different understandings on how we should be looking at the book of Revelation But the point that I think that we can take from this is that the book of Revelation is full of Symbols full of them chock full of them
- 09:17
- And so in here we see God sitting on his throne and there's a lamb that comes out takes the book from him
- 09:23
- And he's worthy to open this book that nobody else Can do nobody else can do this and we see that the lamb is talked about as being
- 09:30
- Jesus Christ The lion from the tribe of Judah in there. I want to be clear that the worship that is
- 09:36
- Directed to God on his throne is the same type of worship that was directed to the lamb and in Revelations chapter 19
- 09:43
- And I think this is important that we point this out before we jump right into the stats the Revelation chapter 19
- 09:50
- Verse 10 says this and I fell at his feet and worshiped him This is speaking of John worshiping this angel that is talking to him
- 09:58
- He says and I fell at his feet and worshiped him and he said to me do not do that I'm a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus worship
- 10:09
- God We are to only worship God alone in all things and we should never try to worship one another
- 10:18
- Because they do not deserve to be worshipped Period and so we see that the lamb that was worshipped
- 10:26
- Never rejected the worship that was being given to him because why what did Revelation chapter 19 said say?
- 10:33
- in verse 10 Worship God and that is what the lamb was who the lamb is it is
- 10:40
- God Jesus Christ God in flesh receiving worship as he deserves so let's now go back to Revelation 4
- 10:46
- I think it's important to point that out so we can understand that worship is meant to be placed in the proper place Into the proper being so let us look at now verse 8 and we're gonna dissect this a little bit
- 10:58
- I want you to be paying close close close attentions to the attributes of God that are spoken in here the title that I've given this sermon this message is the importance of attributes the importance of Attributes attributes have been not only on my mind's been on my mind here as of lately
- 11:18
- But it's been our entire church. We look at the attributes of God throughout the scriptures It's something that we've been seeing every single
- 11:25
- Bible study every single prayer meeting every single Sunday Worship service is that we keep on seeing that there's non -communicable attributes that God alone possesses
- 11:35
- And we are quick to identify them. It's been a pleasure to see them So let us look at what attributes are being spoken of here by those worshiping
- 11:44
- God It first says in in verse 8 And the four living creatures each one of them having six wings
- 11:54
- Are full of eyes all around and within and day and night they do not cease to say holy holy holy
- 12:04
- Now immediately I would hope that your mind goes right back to Isaiah chapter 6 where once again
- 12:10
- Isaiah sees God on his throne and he sees the cherubim and sephirim calling out to each other. Holy Holy holy
- 12:19
- And we see in John chapter 12 verses 37 through 40 It says in that text that who was it that Isaiah saw on that throne?
- 12:29
- He saw his glory speak of Jesus Christ. We see this theophany this
- 12:34
- Christophany Picture an image of Jesus Christ in the
- 12:40
- Old Testament a visualization of Isaiah seen Jesus And so we see that this holy holy holy has been being sung by angels of yesterday today and tomorrow
- 12:53
- With God from creation. It's been always happening in this way. And so we see
- 12:58
- In what the definition of holy would be according to Isaiah chapter 6 verse 3
- 13:04
- I holy is an attribute of perfection sinlessness and inability to sin of pure and sacred and There have been several books written on the holiness of God and that is just a quick short summation of the definition of holy
- 13:23
- And we see that the angels are singing that to God Let us continue on and see what the next attribute that is spoken of here in this text.
- 13:32
- Holy. Holy. Holy is the Lord and I want to pause there that title that name
- 13:38
- Lord would be the Possessor and supreme and all -authority So God's title in this text being
- 13:45
- Lord carries with it and attributes that he is supreme He is the supreme being let's continue on God the
- 13:58
- Almighty God the Almighty What does this Almighty means?
- 14:04
- I would ask you are any of us Almighty No No, God alone is the only
- 14:10
- Almighty. So what is that? What is this? Attribute of God here in Revelation 4a mean to be called the
- 14:17
- Almighty It is to mean to be all -powerful in ruling and There's an omni word that's called for this.
- 14:25
- It's called omnipotent that he is all powerful None of us are all
- 14:33
- Powerful that's an attribute only God himself God the
- 14:41
- Almighty who was and who is and is to come This is another attribute of God that we see in here in this text
- 14:51
- Who was and who is and is to come this would mean that God is not created
- 14:58
- And he's eternal and he's from eternity to eternity He's that Alpha and Omega because he is eternal and has created us
- 15:07
- We have been created and by nature are different than God because God is uncreated
- 15:14
- We are created Are you starting to see in this text now how the attributes of God are just?
- 15:20
- Falling out of the mouths of these angels as well as the elders as we're about to see it later on in this text
- 15:26
- It's just they're worshiping God as he has shown himself to be throughout the text throughout the entire
- 15:33
- Bible So let's keep on reading to this who was and who is and is to come and when the living creatures give glory
- 15:43
- When they give glory and honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne to him who lives forever and ever once again speaking of the eternity to eternity the
- 15:54
- Self -existing God that we worship today It's so important that we understand that God is not created in this in this text
- 16:04
- It's it's showing him as the eternal God that he's described himself to be throughout the entire Old Testament Thank you
- 16:13
- So let us continue on in this so and when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne
- 16:19
- To him who lives forever and ever the 24 elders Will fall down before him who sits on the throne will worship him
- 16:29
- They're worshiping God in this text. They will worship him who lives forever And Will cast their crowns before the throne saying worthy art thou
- 16:44
- Our Lord and our God to receive glory and honor and power
- 16:49
- For that it's create all things and because of thy will they Existed and were created
- 16:55
- I Want to focus on some of the attributes that we see here in verse 11 to We see worthy art thou our
- 17:04
- Lord and our God to receive glory And honor and power for thou it's to create all things
- 17:14
- So that's another attribute of God that we can worship him in as being the creator of all things
- 17:20
- He's created it all in fact in Colossians chapter 1
- 17:27
- Colossians chapter 1 verses 15 through 17 says this it says and he is the image of the invisible
- 17:34
- God the firstborn of all creation for by him all Things were created both in the heavens and on earth
- 17:40
- Visible and invisible whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created by him and for him
- 17:48
- And he is before all things and in him all things Hold together.
- 17:55
- So let's go back on to Revelation chapter 4 verse 11 for thou didst create all things and Because of thy will
- 18:02
- God's will they existed and were created So God holds all things together.
- 18:09
- He's created all things and we get to worship him as That the creator of all things the sustainer of all things in this text
- 18:18
- Isn't that beautiful that we see an example of angels and elders?
- 18:24
- Falling down before the throne of God worshiping him as he is I hope that as we've seen this last hymn after the message today you pay close attention to the attributes that you are worshiping today
- 18:37
- Because that's what these beings in this text are doing. They're worshiping God as he is
- 18:42
- So remember that I hope you've been doing that continually So let us let us look now again in verse 11 worthy art thou our
- 18:51
- Lord and God Receive glory and honor and power for thou didst create all things and because of that they were
- 18:57
- They existed and were created and so now brothers and sisters. I have a question for you
- 19:03
- Because we see this term used over and over here in chapter 4 and chapter 5 worthy are you
- 19:11
- We see that the only one that is able to open the book that is sealed is the lamb because he is worthy
- 19:21
- We see God being worshiped here in this text because he is worthy
- 19:28
- Why then is God worthy of worship And this is a serious question
- 19:35
- Why is God? Worthy of worship, and I want to read that text one more time in verse 11 worthy art thou our
- 19:43
- Lord and God Receive glory and honor and power verse 11 verse 9 in chapter 5
- 19:49
- It says worthy art thou to take the book and to break its sin verse Verses 12 says same with the loud verse worthy is the land that was slain
- 20:02
- To him who sits on his throne into the land be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever why
- 20:07
- Is God worthy of worship? He's holy
- 20:13
- He's the creator He's the Almighty He's the sustainer of all things we exist because of him
- 20:23
- I Hope we realize something in this texting answer to this question of why is
- 20:29
- God worthy is simply because the attributes of God It's what makes
- 20:34
- God God and those attributes those non -communicable things
- 20:39
- Even the communicable attributes of God are things that should deserve word worship from us being the creation to worship the
- 20:48
- Creator and This is so so important here in Revelation because if God was not
- 20:54
- Almighty would it be right for them to worship him as the Almighty? No It wouldn't be if God wasn't holy would it be right for these people to worship him as holy
- 21:05
- No, it wouldn't I Would encourage you to think about songs that you sing in worship and songs that you like I want you to think right now
- 21:14
- Can you sing anything that these angels or elders were saying to God and singing to him?
- 21:20
- Can you sing or say any of those things to your brothers sisters mothers or fathers or wives or husbands your sons or daughters?
- 21:27
- Can you sing any of them to anybody else besides God alone? No You look to another person and say you are holy.
- 21:38
- That's a lie. They are not holy. They're simple you call them the Almighty They are not They are not
- 21:47
- The attributes of God is what makes God who he is Now I asked that question
- 21:56
- Think about your worship that you have About songs that you listen to in your personal time or maybe even songs that you are using at church.
- 22:05
- Can you sing those songs? Towards your loved one Towards your father mother son daughter so on and so forth because if you can't sing those songs
- 22:19
- To your wife your husband That is completely contradictory.
- 22:25
- It was what we see is the worship in the Bible These angels don't seem to you and I they seem to God on this throne
- 22:34
- Elders don't fall before your feet. They fall before the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ And so now
- 22:41
- I have this this next portion of this churches is something that's been deeply deeply on my mind in this last year
- 22:48
- And I think it's very very important. Would it be okay for us to say? Well God is holy holy holy, but I don't like the fact that he is the creator of all things
- 22:56
- So I'm going to lessen that attribute Would that be a fair thing to do? if I have my son up here right now and He is let's just say he's two feet tall is blonde and blue eyes
- 23:09
- And his name's Shepherd and I was to tell you about him and he was standing here and I said, yeah My son is eight feet tall
- 23:15
- He has brown eyes. He has red hair And his name's
- 23:20
- Jake, that's my son You're gonna look at me and say you don't know who your son is because you don't know the attributes of him
- 23:29
- That isn't your son. Your son's two feet tall blonde hair blue eyes and his name is
- 23:34
- Shepherd so I would ask us of Church if anybody claims to be
- 23:40
- Christian that does not declare the attributes of God in Scripture That should throw up a lot of red alarms to you
- 23:48
- That should make the airs on your neck stand up and it should cause you to confront that person
- 23:56
- And to try to glorify God as he says he is because he deserves to be worshipped in such a way He deserves to be worshipped in that way.
- 24:04
- I want to turn to The portion of text here. Like I said that it's hot has been on my mind now for this last year
- 24:11
- It's going to be Philippians chapter 2 and my church The people that have been here have heard me talk on this in the private conversations
- 24:20
- In much detail I would say as you're turning there though I want to remind us of what an essential of Christianity is an essential of Christianity is
- 24:31
- Something that God says you have to believe in X or else you will receive Y Or when he says you have to believe in X and the
- 24:41
- Y can be assumed and let me give you an example of such John 8 23 through 24
- 24:46
- Jesus says to the Pharisees and the people around and he says unless you believe
- 24:51
- I am Ye shall die in your sins a positive and a negative
- 24:57
- Somebody can't believe they be believing in Jesus Christ of the Bible if they say he is not that I am
- 25:03
- The self existing one the one that's rebuilt his name and X is 314 and it's used that name
- 25:08
- Over 6 ,000 times in the Old Testament if you deny that Jesus you don't have Jesus You don't
- 25:16
- I Use this analogy quite frequently. I say if if I said if I had faith in Jesus You might say that's a really good thing
- 25:25
- But if you ask me about that Jesus that I'm talking about What happens if I said that it's Jesus down at Fred Meyer in Twin Falls and he's my cashier
- 25:34
- You say no, don't put your faith in that one Does that Jesus deserve worship?
- 25:41
- No, the Jesus of the Bible the self existing the great I am deserves worship the
- 25:47
- Almighty The land that was slain That's the Jesus that deserves worship turn with me though to chapter 2 of Philippians Chapter 2 of Philippians and I want to read in here versus We'll go ahead and read verses 6 to 8 currently and this is very very important brothers and sisters this is
- 26:14
- This is something that I think Is this is absolutely a heresy and many
- 26:20
- Christian? fellowships Today and I worries me and I hope that we can understand why this is so worrisome after this text
- 26:28
- I want you to remember that those that were worshiping God in the book of Revelation We're worshiping because you have the full attributes of God in that text
- 26:38
- Remember that to lessen an attribute of God is to make a different God Okay Philippians chapter 2 verse 6 through 8 and says in here who although he existed in the form of God This is speaking about Jesus who although he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God a theme
- 26:57
- To be grasped but emptied himself Taking the form of a bondservant and being made in the likeness of men and being found in the appearance of as a man
- 27:06
- He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death even death on a cross
- 27:13
- You might be thinking well, what's the problem in there? What heresy were you just talking about? There's a heresy called the kenosis theory
- 27:22
- The kenosis theory I want you to go home and study that it came about in the 1800s So it's only 200 years old.
- 27:29
- So that should throw some red alarms in your mind, too But the kenosis theory was I'll just use these two names as short because I can't talk about their whole full name without miss miss
- 27:40
- Mispronouncing it but it says Frank and guests were the ones that found this they were Lutheran German pastors and teachers in the 1800s and They were trying to understand and rationalize
- 27:53
- Texts about Jesus Christ in the New Testament in his humanity and what they did is they they said well
- 27:59
- Jesus can't know all things because in Matthew 24 verse 36 He says that no one knows the time of the second coming.
- 28:06
- So Jesus can't know all things. Jesus can't be omnipotent Omniscient he can't be and then they would say well, and then it says that Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature
- 28:17
- So he he definitely did not have the attributes of God while in body form and as I'm saying this
- 28:25
- I hope hairs are standing up on the back of your neck. I Hope you're sitting there saying what in the world is this person saying right here?
- 28:33
- It's a heresy that I'm saying this is heresy and so that they would go to this text and they would find it here and focus in on verse 7 here in Philippians chapter 2 but emptied himself
- 28:47
- Taking the form of a bond -servant and being made in the likeness of men that word emptied is that?
- 28:53
- kenosis that is being described as the kenosis theory and So the person that believes in this kenosis theory
- 29:03
- Says well, you see God when he became flesh dumped himself deprived himself got rid of All his divine attributes
- 29:17
- What are those divine attributes And let me try to show you how they try to rationalize this text
- 29:27
- Matthew 24 without going through the minutia of Matthew chapter 24 and The questions that are being posed to Jesus.
- 29:37
- So Matthew 24 verse 36. It says but of that day Let me start in verse 35 heaven and earth will pass away, but my words shall not pass away
- 29:47
- But of that day an hour No one knows not even the angels or of heaven nor the
- 29:53
- Son but the Father alone And so they say you will see Jesus of course can't know all things because he doesn't know the time of the second coming only the father does that because the father is
- 30:03
- Fully divinely and attributely God, but the Son is not this Frankengast would even go on to say that Jesus when he was sended to the right hand of the father
- 30:12
- Never pick back up those attributes that he dumped himself on Not good,
- 30:20
- I see the pastors around the room shaking their head. No, that's not good, right? And we'll talk about it a little bit more.
- 30:26
- So then they would say well anytime that Jesus Christ Demonstrates an attribute of God It's all through the
- 30:32
- Holy Spirit that does that and they would turn to Matthew chapter 20 12 for this Matthew chapter 12
- 30:42
- And They say in Matthew chapter 12 verse 28 you see when Jesus himself casts out demons
- 30:48
- He says but if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God and the kingdom of God has come upon you And so they say you see
- 30:53
- Jesus was only able to do this through the power of the Holy Spirit not through his own divine attributes
- 31:02
- And so that's why you can't be They'll try to say that they believe he's fully God and fully man, but they will say that he's not the finally
- 31:13
- So What is the issue with that? Did Jesus get worshipped while he was walking on earth by his disciples?
- 31:25
- Yes Why was he able to be worshipped as such because he was holy
- 31:32
- God in flesh When I say fully I only hope you to say Holy God in the flesh.
- 31:39
- So how are we to understand Matthew 24 verse 36 in this text? I want you to I want to talk about Philippians chapter 2
- 31:47
- Who is it that says in verse 7 that emptied himself? It was Jesus that did this So we're talking about the second person of the
- 31:55
- Trinity here. It was Jesus that did this I want you to pay close attention to Matthew 24 verse 36 again
- 32:02
- Matthew 24 verse 36 Matthew chapter 24 verse 36 says but of that day an hour
- 32:14
- No one knows not even the angels of the heaven nor the Son Now what chapter came first chapter 12 or chapter 24 in Matthew?
- 32:25
- Chapter 12 and he makes mention of the Holy Spirit So Jesus has already mentioned the Holy Spirit all throughout his ministry.
- 32:32
- And what does chapter 24 verse 36 say? No one knows
- 32:40
- Not even the angels of heaven nor the Son but the Father alone So I would ask the person that believes in the kenosis theory did the
- 32:49
- Holy Spirit become flesh and dumped himself all by natural means Does the
- 32:54
- Holy Spirit not know all things And they don't know what to do with that because here it says the
- 33:02
- Father alone knows this Well, if you were to read a little bit before in verse 35 heaven and earth will not pass away
- 33:09
- But my word shall not pass away that heaven and earth will pass away But my words won't that's claiming a divinity by Jesus already in that text the words that he speaks
- 33:19
- Will not pass away It will not pass away To give a little bit more context and tradition to it.
- 33:26
- It was an honorable thing To give honor to your father
- 33:33
- At your marriage ceremony to say I don't know when the marriage is taking place
- 33:39
- Only my father does he gets to dictate the place and time and and where and it means that I get married in It's the traditional context of Jesus Christ a 2 ,000 years ago
- 33:48
- And so now we can rationalize why Jesus would say such a thing It's because he honors the father and everything he says and does and that is why he would say a statement that of that time
- 33:58
- No one knows, but the father is an honoring statement. Not one that is talking about him not being fully omniscient
- 34:07
- Not fully omniscient Let's go back to Philippians chapter 2 and Now with that in our minds
- 34:15
- Let us see what Philippians chapter 2 really is getting out in this text I want to start in first chapter verse 3.
- 34:22
- It says do nothing from selfishness Or empty conceit
- 34:30
- But with humility of mind let each one of you regard yours Regard one another as more important than himself.
- 34:40
- What is that speaking of in this text humility? Humility verse 3 is you are to be humble if you were a
- 34:47
- Christian you are to hold each other higher than yourselves in every way possible
- 34:53
- If your friend is cold you take your jacket off your back and you give it to him and you be cold
- 34:59
- So your friend doesn't that is what this is speaking about is humility Verse 4 then goes on to say do not merely look out for your own personal interest
- 35:08
- But also for the interest of others have this attitude in yourself, which was also in Christ Jesus Speaking of an attitude now, what's the attitude?
- 35:22
- humility I Would ask if verse 7 is what the attitude we are to have ourselves
- 35:30
- Brothers and sisters. Do you have any divine attributes that you can dump yourself of? No What can you do and be like Christ in Being Having a form of Being humble to love one another regard them more important than yourself
- 35:52
- I want to keep on reading in this so so now verse 5 only makes sense in the way that it's meant to be and That's to be that we are to be humble like Christ Verse 5 one more time have this attitude in yourself
- 36:03
- Which was also in Christ Jesus who although he existed in the form of God, so Jesus is
- 36:09
- God He did not require equality with God a thing to be grasped
- 36:14
- I Want to ask you what what are the angels doing to the father when
- 36:20
- Jesus was incarnate? Were they not worshiping him was the father not receiving worship why Jesus himself was being persecuted
- 36:28
- Jesus in John chapter 18. I'm having the privilege of watching on right now, and I'm him saying
- 36:35
- I am The Roman cohort falls down in a prostrate manner
- 36:43
- Jesus in the flesh could demand worship like that But he did not regard equality with the father a thing to be grasped
- 36:54
- And we'll talk about why here in a second But he did not regard that even though he existed as God and that would mean to exist as God you have the full
- 37:02
- Attributes of God dwelling in you and that means that he was fully omniscient fully omnipotent
- 37:08
- Fully omnipresent fully omnibelevolent so on and so forth because he deserves that worship
- 37:16
- Verse 6 although he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped
- 37:21
- But emptied himself taking the form of the bondservant. We have that word kenosis now here again so what is the emptying of Christ in this text that it's speaking of now that we understand the context and Using total descriptura to know that Jesus deserve worship.
- 37:36
- Why he's walking on earth He emptied himself of the privilege. It was to be God to receive worship
- 37:45
- He deserved to be worshiped as such and what happened we rejected
- 37:52
- We rejected him That is why that's the emptying that's being spoken of in this text.
- 37:58
- I want to pay attention. He emptied himself Only Jesus could do this
- 38:05
- He did that he emptied himself being obedient to the father doing the father's will he did it
- 38:13
- I would ask again. Can you can you be obedient to God's will? We're gonna be sinners.
- 38:18
- We're gonna break God's law Hope that you're obedient to God's will and law, but who's the only one that ever was
- 38:25
- Jesus That's because he was fully God and took God himself to obey God's law
- 38:30
- Verse 7 one more time about emptied himself taking the form of a bondservant being made in the likeness of men
- 38:36
- Once again humility being humble the creator now appears as the same thing as the created man
- 38:43
- And being found in the appearance as a man he humbled himself So it's saying that he didn't just humble himself in that way
- 38:50
- He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death So the one who didn't deserve death because Romans 6 23 for the wages of sin is death
- 39:00
- Jesus never sinned He didn't deserve death But he was obedient humbled himself to the point of death and it doesn't stop there even in this text
- 39:09
- It says he humbled himself even more and what does it say? even death on a cross
- 39:17
- Even death in this most terrible way And now in reflection of that humility that Jesus Christ had we see in verse 9 something that takes place
- 39:31
- Therefore also God highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow
- 39:40
- It's once again talking about the equality of receiving the worship With God and we see that in the book of Revelation We see that we're just reading from earlier that at the name of Jesus that every knee should bow those who are in heaven and on Earth and on earth and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is the
- 40:00
- Lord to the glory of God the Father Jesus has to be fully
- 40:07
- God in order to be worship In fact, there's some serious implications that we said
- 40:14
- Jesus doesn't know all things If God doesn't know all things, how can we take you security and who's saying to tell us that on the cross?
- 40:23
- How can our God know that the debt was paid in full on that cross we said it was it was finished if he does not know all things a
- 40:32
- God a Jesus that doesn't know all things is not a
- 40:37
- God that deserves worship It's only because he knows all things that we can take
- 40:43
- In that process only because he knows all things that we can work It's only because he knows all things that makes up who
- 40:50
- God is It's so so important to get this right church the
- 41:00
- Emptying that Christ took on this This text I want to turn back to Revelation chapter 4
- 41:08
- Chapter 4 it says Worthy are thou our
- 41:13
- Lord and our God receive glory and honor and power verse 9 of chapter 5 Worthy are thou to take the book and to break its seals
- 41:23
- Verse 12 worthy is the lamb that was slain You see it again in verse 8 holy holy holy
- 41:32
- Holy This is the worship that God deserves and what worship it
- 41:37
- But I ask you what was the cry of the people to Jesus did any of them say, holy?
- 41:45
- Holy pull your worthy worthy worthy. No, they said crucify crucify
- 41:56
- They nailed him to a cross Because he humbled himself Point of being obedient to die the death that we deserve to die in the place of us on that cross
- 42:08
- And it is only because he is fully God that we can take any security of our salvation in him
- 42:16
- Jesus is fully divine Fully man, and that is the only way that he deserves worship is to be known as fully
- 42:25
- God in the flesh I church want to read verse
- 42:30
- I want to read verse 13 one more time to you and Every created thing is in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea and all the things in them
- 42:42
- I heard saying to him who sits on the throne and to the lamb be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever
- 42:54
- And the four living creatures kept saying amen and the elders fell down and worship
- 43:02
- God deserves worship today and church. We are finite We will never ever meet or reach the end of his unmeasurable nature
- 43:18
- We will always be Thirsting upon who he is we will always be drawn from his well
- 43:26
- We will always be able to glorify a being as such and that is because he is
- 43:31
- God and so I want to leave in a word of prayer and after which let us stand and Worship God together corporately and worship them as the
- 43:42
- God and his attributes that he declares himself to be Let us pray
- 43:49
- Lord God, we thank you so much for being that propitiation that we need
- 43:56
- God we thank you for this meeting here today I thank you for the way that these churches are being blessed underneath your will
- 44:07
- Lord God I pray that you'd be glorified in every single step that we take as we participate in our churches
- 44:14
- And then you would be glorified about all things Lord That we would always have our eyes set upon you
- 44:20
- Lord And as soon as we start looking elsewhere that God you would just turn our heads back to you and that we would see
- 44:26
- You Lord? That we keep our eyes focused on God you are good and merciful and Lord I just once again
- 44:37
- I lift you and your word up Lord and I lift these petitions that we've heard here today as Churches are wanting to praise you and are wanting to ask please
- 44:48
- Petitions to you Lord. I lift all those things up again And God I just pray that as we sing this song today
- 44:54
- Lord that you would just be worshiped once again and that your will would be done And I just say these things in your holy name
