00:07
All right, it's time to begin. Today we come to the road of Emmaus, a small town about seven miles distance.
00:32
It's a very interesting road. We hear about the
00:40
Jericho Road. That's where you fall into thieves.
00:47
I'd rather be on the Emmaus Road much safer.
00:54
Plus, we'll meet our resurrected Lord here. Verse 13
01:03
And behold, two of them went that same day to a village called
01:12
Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about three score furloins.
01:22
There's been question about where Emmaus is. It's about seven miles, as I said, from Jerusalem.
01:34
And they talked together of all the things that had happened. And it came to pass that while they communed together and reasoned,
01:49
Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were holding that they should not know him.
02:02
You see how easy it is for our Lord to block our vision and we not know it.
02:11
Here's two men, two disciples, by the way, and they knew this prophet.
02:21
They knew Jesus. Turns out they didn't know him completely.
02:29
But with these two, their eyes had not been opened.
02:36
What does he mean? Is David in here? He hides from me all of the time.
02:51
What does it mean that their eyes were not open? They stand standing there. They could surely see they were going on the road.
03:20
Okay, we learned a valuable lesson here. Did you realize,
03:28
I'm sure that you did, that Jesus, the resurrected
03:34
Jesus, has not been seen by the world? Even today he cannot be seen by any of those except the ones that he wants to be seen by.
03:55
We don't see him physically, we see him spiritually. The world cannot see him, so the world makes fun of us.
04:06
On the road to Emmaus, the Lord opened these eyes of these disciples.
04:16
They were talking about him. They hadn't seen the
04:22
Lord, they hadn't viewed the resurrection, and they didn't really believe the resurrection.
04:35
They didn't believe that the one who had joined them on the road was the resurrected
04:41
Christ, that's for sure. And he said unto them, what manner of communications are these that you have one with another as you walk along the way?
05:02
They seemed to be sad. So from their countenance and from the speech, we gather that they were heartbroken.
05:13
But notice Jesus raises the question as though he hadn't experienced it.
05:21
And the one of them whose name was Cleopas answered, answering said unto him, art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem and hast not known the things which are coming, which are come to pass there in these days?
05:45
Are you a stranger to town? Are you just getting here? If you've been in Jerusalem, you surely heard there was quite a commotion.
06:07
And he said unto them, what things? They said unto him concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all of the people.
06:24
Now we know that these two did not believe that he had resurrected.
06:32
How do we know that? What? All right, they're sad, but there was something in their answer.
07:03
That's it. That's exactly right. And they said he was a prophet.
07:10
The little word was. So that's right.
07:21
They know he's dead, but they don't believe that he has resurrected. And he told them over and over and over again.
07:37
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death and have crucified him.
07:50
But we trusting that it had been that it had been he which should have redeemed
08:00
Israel. And besides all of this, today is the third day since these things were done.
08:09
Why did they mention the third day? It's true, but Burge, you have any idea why they said the third day?
08:25
Well, it might be. Brandon, you know, well, that might have been, but there was a stronger knowledge among the
08:51
Jews. What was it, David? That's right.
09:07
Yes. Yes. And they said this is the third day.
09:16
He'd be back if he was coming. That's right. Especially if you didn't embalm.
09:45
Then they go on to explain, yea, even yea, and certain women also of our company.
09:54
So they were in the company. Made us astonished which were early at the sepulcher.
10:03
And when they found not his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels which said that he was alive.
10:17
Now they know all of this and still they don't believe. They didn't believe the report of the women.
10:32
And they couldn't believe that he was had arisen. Let me skip over here.
10:45
And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher and found it even as the women had said.
10:56
But him they saw not. So Peter and John went from the group which they were in to the sepulcher and they didn't find him.
11:08
Now all of that and still he hasn't opened their eyes. Then he said unto them
11:21
O fools, what and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
11:34
This is a very important section in speaking about his resurrection.
11:45
Did not show to them the prints of his hands. He could have but he didn't. He didn't show them the scar on his side.
11:55
He could have but he didn't. He referred them to the scriptures.
12:04
Now, what did the scripture say about him? Not the new testament but the old. What had it predicted?
12:18
David, did they not predict that he would resurrect?
12:42
Ought not. Yes. And he says ought not
12:49
Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory.
12:56
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets he expounded unto them all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
13:10
So he's laying a foundation foundation and they still haven't caught on or he still hasn't opened their eyes.
13:52
And they drew nigh unto they were walking along and they got nigh unto the village where they went.
14:01
And he made as though he would have gone further and I've often wondered about Christ was just acting like he was going on and leave them.
14:14
But they constrained him saying abide with us for it's now toward evening and the day is far spent.
14:27
So he went in to tarry with them and it came to pass as he sat at meet with them he took bread and blessed it and break it and gave it to them.
14:46
What do you suppose they're thinking now? Their eyes were opened.
14:58
He did not open their eyes until this moment. And they knew him and he vanished out of their sight.
15:20
No, it's don't makes no mention of his eating here. But he vanished out of their sight immediately.
15:31
And of course they go back to town late at night they run back and they tell the people that they have seen him.
15:41
But we'll leave that part for David next week. I, I, that's right.
15:56
That's right, that's right.
