Perseverance Through Weakness and God's Sufficient Grace

Let us now turn in the Word of God.

In the book of Corinthians, chapter 12, 2 Corinthians, chapter 12,.

Where Paul besought the Lord three times for this thorn in the flesh, this messenger of Satan he speaks about in verse 7, to go away.

Spiritual Growth Must Follow Spiritual Crisis

Liebe, die weiter dauert. We've been experiencing the love of God.

Wir haben wahrlich Gottes Liebe gekannt in diesen Tagen.

Hundreds of people have gone for counseling.

Many have been prayed for and have experienced new degrees of freedom and victory in their lives even here.

We've had many great and strong messages from various people.

And we've been emphasizing God's love.

And the need to make Jesus Christ the Lord of our lives.

Und die Priorität, dass Jesus Herr sei im Leben.

A theme that just burns on my heart. It's the theme of most of my books. Is how do we maintain this all of our life. And often in ministry we have a great emphasis on spiritual crisis.

We call people to stand up.

Pray great prayers of repentance and confession. And I believe in that. I do it all the time. I've had the joy of seeing tens of thousands stand in these meetings. I've read through the feedback papers of literally thousands of people even in the past few years.

But I want to say something that's so important. The crisis must be followed by God's process. Spiritual growth. That's such an important word in our vocabulary. I know, for some it sounds boring. And we seldom hear a message on the miracle of spiritual growth.

Schmuggler, what a great servant of the Lord. Tonight you have Brother George, God's bungler. When I first came to Europe, I lived in Spain and I was learning Russian. The name Operation Mobilization did not exist.

We were just a few students under the name Send the Light. We were working in Mexico where we started as students, Bible College students.

Operation Mobilization and the Call to Reach Closed Nations

And so within a year of being in Europe, I headed for the Soviet Union. It was very, very closed and difficult in those days to carry Bibles and Scriptures. But I hid them in the walls of the car, I hid them in the bottom of the cornflakes boxes.

And after days of questioning, a day or two of questioning, they decided we were religious fanatics and gave us a submachine gun escort out of the country.

We did have great opportunities to share our faith with many officials. And after that experience, we went together for a day of prayer in the mountains, not so far from here. And as I often did in those days, I climbed to the top of a very big tree to worship the Lord.

And I thought of the great land of Germany. I thought of the war because my wife's father had been killed in the war. I thought of the great power of hatred, how armies mobilized, driven by ego and by hatred.

And a word came to my mind. Mobilize. Maybe we should think about Western Europe. Maybe God wanted to do something big in Western Europe and let Western Europeans move into the Soviet countries and to the Muslim countries and to other lands because they were so close to those countries.

And there on the top of that tree, for the first time in my life, I shouted out, Operation Mobilization. And God gave the burden to see Englishmen and Germans and French and Spanish and Italians working together to make an impact on Europe for Jesus Christ and to see it spread to the rest of the world.

I went back and shared that vision with a few Spaniards in a prayer retreat for a weekend outside of Madrid. We wanted God in that weekend of prayer and fasting to confirm whether this was from him or just from George Verwer.

And they agreed to move forward in Operation Mobilization.

A month later, a small number of Americans arrived from different colleges and we met and waited upon God in Madrid, Spain. And God heard our prayers. By next summer, he gave us 200 people. Our main focus in those days was reaching the masses through literature.

And almost 25 million pieces of Christian literature went out in that one summer. Incredible story. And we began to pray for Operation Mobilization Part 2. There were many problems. We made mistakes. But we were committed to be learners and disciples of Jesus Christ.

We were committed to work with local churches and other biblical organizations, no matter how hard it might be. In an amazing way, in the next summer, God gave us 2 ,000.

Patience with the Gradual Work of Spiritual Growth

Needless to say, I love trees. If you go out into the woods and you see someone sitting there next to a tree. And you say, excuse me, what are you doing here looking at this tree? And he says, I'm watching the tree grow.

And the other says, yes, I'm watching the tree grow. Ah, you're watching the tree grow. Ah yes, how long have you been here? So you see, you don't see a tree grow. Vor einiger Zeit war ich in Kalifornien bei einem jener Riesenbäume.

And as you grow strong in God over the next weeks and months and years, that is a great work of God. I beg of you to be patient with your own spiritual growth rate. Some of you are too down on yourself.

Some of you live in perpetual guilt and sometimes perpetual false guilt. I believe many people today have false ideas about true spirituality.

Ich glaube, heute haben viele Leute ganz falsche Vorstellungen vom wahren geistlichen Leben. Sie sehen zunächst nicht, dass der Herr auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise bei unterschiedlichen Menschen wirkt.

Viele von euch haben Schriften von Ralf Schallif gelesen und gemerkt, wie sehr er das betont, wachsen, vorwärts gehen mit Jesus. Und wie wir anfangs sagten, es geht doch darum, ein Leben lang die Erfahrung fortzuführen.

Personal Struggles and the Need for Encouragement

Gott hat mich lieb. Als ich noch jung im Glauben war, 17, 18 jährig, da hatte ich meine Kämpfe und meine Probleme. Ich war stark im Eifer, schwach in der Weisheit. Ich war ein intensiver Typ und neigte von Anfang an zum Extremen.

Und ich habe dann gewaltige Gefühlshöhen gekannt. Aber dann auch Entmutigungstiefen. Und es war so weit, dass ich bald genug von der Sache hatte.

Und manchmal, wenn eine starke Botschaft gegeben wurde, anstatt mich zu ermutigen, sie würde mich in Teile zerbrechen, als ob ich gedacht hätte, Gott, ich kann niemals sein. Ich kann niemals dieser Typ von Person sein.

Nach viel Schmerz und viel Gebet über das, was ich heute Abend teilen sollte,.

Als eine Ermunterung für dich, weiterzugehen, auch wenn du empfindest, dass es schwer ist, rückwärts geht, dass es nicht vorankommt. Da möchte ich einige Gedanken formulieren, die mir nicht leicht fallen.

Es wird manchmal die Bekenntnisse eines schwachen, kämpfenden Missionars genannt. Die Bibel sagt, bekenne einer dem anderen seine Sünden und bete für einander, dass ihr gesund werdet.

Wie ich in der Vergangenheit einige meiner Anstrengungen und Verluste vermittelt habe, hunderte von jungen Menschen haben geschrieben oder zu mir gekommen und gefragt, was das Teilen war, das ihnen geholfen hat, weiterzugehen.

Forgiveness and Restoration After Personal Failure

Oft sprechen wir über Verluste aus der Vergangenheit. Und dann sagt man, wie wir Seither wunderbar durch Jesus Sieg haben. Und ich habe nun den Eindruck, manche von euch erwarten von dem Herrn für die nächsten Tage mehr, als er dir geben kann oder will.

Denn jetzt bist du so richtig begeistert. Die meisten habe ich stehen sehen Arme hoch. Manche hüpften geradezu vor Freude an Jesus. Ja, das ist fein, das ist prima so. Der Herr kennt ja dein Herz. Er weiß, was jedes Mal dir tief ins Herz geht, wenn da eine Einladung gegeben wird.

Aber wenn nächstes Mal wieder der Aufruf kommt zur völligen Hingabe, vielleicht wirst du dem Herrn vertrauen, dass er durch Kraft des Geistes dir es möglich macht, sitzen zu bleiben. Denn was jetzt kommen wird, ist nicht wieder eine Serie von geistlichen Höhepunkten, sondern vielleicht drei Wochen, drei Monate, drei Jahre, und jetzt weiter im geistlichen Wachstum.

Und obwohl wir es nicht mögen, werden einige der Lektionen, die wir lernen müssen, werden nur durch Fehler und Schwierigkeiten gelernt. Ich denke, mein größter Fehler, als ich 17 oder 18 war, der mich fast zerstörte,.

Ein großer Fehler war bei mir, als ich 17 oder 18 war, und dann bin ich fast kaputt gegangen. Ich bin unterwegs gewesen, hunderte von Meilen weit in eine bestimmte Stadt und habe dauernd unterwegs Traktate verteilt.

Ich habe immer Zeugnis gegeben und war dorthin unterwegs, um dort ein Mädchen zu treffen. Und als ich dorthin kam, konnte sie mich nicht sehen, sie hatte mit einem anderen etwas vereinbart. Und da war ich in der Stadt und habe weitermassen Traktate verteilt.

Ich wollte wirklich zu einem dieser Strip-Tees in New York City.

Und sehen, wie eine Frau alles ablegt. Das war mein Ziel. Aber ich war ein guter Junge, ich habe es nie getan. Aber ich konnte es in meiner Fantasie tun. Und ich fühlte mich sehr schuld. Aber jetzt war ich ein Christ.

Und ein geisterfüllter Christ. Ich habe Menschen wirklich für Jesus gewonnen, immer wieder. Einmal, als ich in einer Schule bei uns reden konnte, haben 125 Menschen sich gemeldet, um Jesus anzunehmen.

Und in dieser Nacht, in diesem Moment der Schwäche und der Verwirrung, habe ich diese Traktate in meine Tasche gelegt und bin zu einem dieser Orte gegangen. Und dort saß ich und ich war schuldig.

Und dort saß ich am Ort des Lasters und es war mir Elend zumute. Und nach etwa fünf Minuten bin ich im Laufschritt wieder hinaus auf die Straße. Ich war tief, tief traurig und elend. Wie habe ich den Herrn jetzt enttäuschen können?

Ich habe etwas getan, das ich nicht einmal tat, bevor ich Christ geworden war. Aber irgendwie war das Wort Gottes da. Es gibt Vergebung für Sünder.

1. John 2, Vers 1 sagt, dass du nicht schuldig bist. Danach sagt es, wenn du schuldig bist,.

Ist dein Fürsprech da bei dem Vater Jesus, der gerecht ist. Ich bin in eine Telefonkabine gestürzt und nahm den Apparat. Das ist die Art, wie ich damals betete.

Ganz allein sein irgendwo. Denn in Amerika war es so, man konnte in die Kabine hinein,.

Telefongerät ans Ohr und jeder liest dich dann in Ruhe damals. Und ich betete und betete und betete wieder, Herr Jesus, vergib mir jetzt. Aber ich habe Vergebung nicht gefühlt. Ich fühlte eher, dass ich aufhören sollte.

Der Teufel sagt, wenn wir so sünden, sagt er oft, du bist kein Gutes, du hast dich nicht verändert, du bist ein Epokret.

Die Bibel sagt, Satan ist der Ankläger der Gegner der Brüder. Aber ich werde dies nie vergessen.

Ich ging aus dieser Telefonkabine,.

Spaziert im Glauben neu, ich bin Kind Gottes, ich habe Vergebung. Das war an einer Bushaltestelle, ein Haufen Leute dort. Und ich staunte, wie ein Mann auf mich zukam. Ich habe vorher und seither kaum je so etwas erlebt.

Und er fragte mich, was muss ich tun, um meine Sünden loszuwerden? Was? Und er begann, sein Herz zu öffnen. Seine Ehe war im Zerbruch. Etwas von seiner Frau, die Jesus irgend gefunden hätte. Und wir sind dann zu einem Denkmal in der Nähe dann spaziert, und dort konnten wir zu zweit beten.

Er betete das Gebet des Sünders und Gnade. Nun, ich empfehle dir jetzt nicht die Methode, die meine gewesen war, bei jener Gelegenheit.

Aber ich habe dieses Beispiel gebracht, um dir zu zeigen, wie Vergebung, Reinigung, Wiederherstellung da ist, sofort nach dem Augenblick der Sünde. Nun, vergangene Fehler, manchmal reden wir zu sehr darüber.

Sanctification in the Midst of Fear, Sin, and Affliction

Aber jetzt bin ich ja 30 Jahre Missionar gewesen. Ja, der internationale Leiter von OM. Kündiger vor tausenden von Seelen, wie man als Christ lebt. Jetzt haben wir doch sicher jene alten Probleme längst nicht mehr.

Wir haben doch seither gelernt, die ganze Waffenrüstung Gottes zu ergreifen. Und wenn immer ein feuriger Pfeil des Bösen kommt, kein Problem, das spickt harmlos ab, wir tragen doch die volle Waffenrüstung.

Hast du gemeint, das wäre so? Ich gebe dir jetzt einiges, mit dem ich immer noch zu kämpfen habe. In diesen fünf, sechs Tagen meinte ich plötzlich, ich hätte mein ganzes Leben, mit dem ich zu kämpfen hatte.

Was ist wohl das Wort für den Übersetzer jetzt, wenn man sagen will, dass man dauernd irgendwie am Zappeln ist, dauernd im Kampfe verstrickt? Ich glaube nicht daran, dass das erfüllt sein mit dem Heiligen Geist bedeutet, dass man von da an durchs Leben schwebt.

Ich glaube an die Heiligung, du weißt das. Ich glaube an den Sieg im Leben. Ich glaube, dass wir mehr und mehr wachsen können in der Erfahrung mit Gebet und mit Gottes Gnadengaben. Aber zugleich habe ich den Glauben und die Erfahrung, dass das echte geistliche Wachstum nicht fern von Anfechtung, Not, Sünde geschieht, sondern mitten in dem Allem.

Zum Beispiel ein Bild vor uns hier in 2. Korinther 7, Vers 5. Der Apostel Paulus, wie wir ihn nicht kennen vielleicht. Ich lese einfach im Englischen jetzt 2. Korinther 7, Vers 4 und 5. Der Apostel Paulus schreit da wahrlich, reell über seine Situation.

Da haben wir es, in der Bedrängnis, zwei Hauptpunkte der Not für mich, Streit und Furcht. Ich kann euch gar nicht sagen, wie oft ich fast gelähmt gewesen bin wegen Furcht. Furcht vor dem, Furcht wegen dem anderen.

Ich habe 17 Jahre lang Furcht gehabt davor, dass einmal eines dieser Schiffe richtig scheitern könnte. Und dann ist es passiert. Und jetzt haben wir bereits ein nächstes Schiff gekauft. Ich war vielleicht der furchtsamste von den leitenden OM-Leuten und fand, Brüder, langsam, langsam, mit schon wieder einem Schiff.

Ganz im tiefsten Herzen möchte ich am liebsten überhaupt keine Schiffe mehr haben. Und das ist nun das Feine in dieser Familie, zu der ich gehöre im Dienste des Herrn. Die anderen nehmen mich an, wie ich bin, auch mit diesen Fehlern und Nöten.

Internationaler Leiter, wenn die mir kündigen wollen, nach der Versammlung heute Abend, können sie es tun. Ich kann zurücktreten, sofort. Aber wenn ich unten in 2. Korinther 7 .5 war, bei der Furcht, da ist auch immer wieder zum Beispiel der Dale Rotton auf mich zugekommen, hat mich hochgehoben, hat gesagt, vergiss die Furcht, ein nächstes Schiff.

When I just step on one of the OM-ships, usually within one hour, especially if I go to the engine room, I just start uncontrolled weeping. Now I know some of you can't understand that. Because you're a different temperament.

Some of us are more emotional than others. I've known my good friend Peter from Switzerland for many years. He has a different temperament than me. I pray he will never try to be like me, and please don't ask me to be like you.

In OM Switzerland, we have a similar person named Paul Stilley. Even his name gives sort of a quiet, dull feeling. When I read Tim LaHaye's book about temperaments, it was one of the greatest blessings in my Christian life.

When I read Eugenia Price, a great woman writer's book about freedom, it began to change my life. I began to be more comfortable in living with George Verwer. The struggle goes on. Fear. Worry. Each day we have to battle often these things.

Developing Biblical Strategies Against Lust and Pride

But God gives grace. All my life I have struggled with my big mouth and my irritability and my bad temper. Through the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, all the means of grace. There has been greater and greater victory.

But it's been a long road. Long after you get victory over temper, you will battle with irritability. You will battle with wrong attitudes. You will battle with dispositional sins. And the struggle against lust.

Oh yes, in answer to prayer, God's grace has kept me from doing something foolish that would drag the name of OM into the mud. But the battle with those magazines that people leave in the toilets, they leave on the train tables, you don't get a second to think and the arrow of lust is in your side.

I developed a 20-point strategy just to battle against lust and I hope you have a strategy from God's Word to battle against lust or any other sin in your life. I present this in my books, which are in many languages.

2 Timothy 2 says, flee, run away from youthful lust, which can so destroy you. And then there has been the struggle against ego. Ego. The self and pride. As a young man, I thought I was really getting strong after reading Calvary Road and really dealing with the self-life.

But pride and self-ism and self-centeredness is a subtle area that we will have to deal with each day the rest of our life.

And then there was extremism.

I would hear messages like last night. They would explode in my mind and I would immediately run out and do extreme things. The amazing thing that God would sometimes use these things. But ultimately they were hurtful, they were confusing.

And if God had not given me this message of balance from His Word, I know I would not be living the Christian life today. I would be out of the race. I thank God for my dear wife, faithful to me these 29 years.

She could tell you of the extremism that I brought into our marriage. The extremism that I brought into the movement as it was being born.

I wanted all money to be used for the poor and for world evangelism.

Once, before we were married, we went out by the beach and I wouldn't spend any money for lunch to even buy my wife. She was my fiancée. A sandwich! We can fast. We can wait. The Bible college will give us the food later free.

But it seemed that maybe she was hungry. Some people sat behind us and they opened their sandwiches and began to eat. And then they threw their bags in the rubbish bin and they went off. I went to the rubbish bin and took out the bag and gave the sandwich to my fiancée.

That is one of the more mild, gentle stories that I could tell you. Brothers and sisters, in the name of Jesus, I beg of you to get a balance of truth from the Word of God. And that will take time. There are the struggles with doubts.

Honest Doubts and the Battle Against Discouragement

I am sorry to say we have not spoken much here about the intellectual reasons for our Christian faith and we certainly will be doing that in our September conference and I hope next summer. I hope we someday can bring my good friend Josh McDowell to Love Europe.

Because, praise be to God, there are honest answers to honest questions. And we don't need to be afraid of our doubts. I have wrestled with doubts and questions about the Christian faith and the Bible all of my Christian life to this very day.

Often these doubts, these questions, these struggles are the anvil that God can make great faith upon. And then there's the battle against discouragement. If any of you battle discouragement this summer, really heavy, write me a letter.

Because I know myself and I know in all of you that in August I will be battling discouragement every day. Now maybe, maybe you have your life all together. I don't want to project my problems on you.

You don't have these problems. You're filled with the Spirit moving in concord, supersonic speed across the Christian world and the nation. I stand in admiration of you. Really, I would like you to autograph my Bible.

Hypocrites, sign here. And I simply close with this statement. If God can cause a character like me to experience this continuing love every day these 32 years, then I know there is great hope for every one of you here tonight, no matter what your failure, what your sin or what your problem.

Lifelong Learning, Self-Acceptance, and Growth by Grace

Let us go forward together as sinners saved by grace. Growing in grace. And experiencing that continuing love every day of our life. Let us pray. Just going to have a moment of silent prayer which you can just worship the Lord in your heart.

You can confess some particular area that perhaps you've been struggling with. You can make a decision to develop a strategy from the Bible to deal with that area no matter how many times it keeps popping up.

In a biblical way, I would ask you to pray for a deeper acceptance of yourself and your own temperament. That God will not destroy your personality, but he will work through you to conform you to the image of Jesus Christ.

I want you to make a decision to be ready for 5, 10, 15, 20 years of continuous learning and growth by God's grace through Jesus Christ. And I know that God will use you.

God has a great plan for your life. He can use a little bit a character like me and us in this work. He can and will use you in a mighty way. Pray your own prayer. Our God and Father, you know everything about us and you love us still.

We thank you for that love, we thank you for that grace, we thank you for that forgiveness. And we commit ourselves for many years of growing stronger and stronger in your Son, Jesus Christ. In whose name we pray.
