08:56
Labeled 123A I lift my eyes to you The tune may not be familiar to you
09:04
But I think it's one to which we can easily pick up DJ if you would start us off I lift my eyes to the throne
09:16
As slaves look to their masters
09:23
And to you I lift my eyes
09:28
As to her lady's hand A slave girl turns her face
09:37
So we look to the Lord our God That he might show us grace
09:46
Show us your grace oh Lord Let us your favor know
09:56
For we are filled with their content And all the scorn they show
10:05
Our souls have had their fill Of scoffing and contempt
10:14
From those who live a life of ease And from the arrogant
10:25
Please continue standing for the reading of the word. We'll be looking at Jeremiah chapter 17.
10:31
Jeremiah 17. Jeremiah 17.
10:39
The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron. With the point of a diamond it is engraved.
10:46
On the tablet of their heart And on the horns of your altars
10:52
While their children remember Their altars and their wooden images
10:57
By the green trees on the high hills O my mountain in the field
11:03
I will give as plunder your wealth All your treasures and your high places of sin
11:10
Within all your borders And you, even yourself Shall let go of your heritage which
11:18
I gave you And I will cause you to serve your enemies In the land which you do not know
11:25
For you have kindled a fire in my anger Which will burn forever
11:31
Thus says the Lord Cursed is the man who trusts in man
11:37
And makes flesh his strength Whose heart departs from the
11:42
Lord For he shall be like a shrub in the desert And shall not see when good comes
11:49
But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness In a salt land which is not inhabited
11:58
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord And whose hope is the
12:03
Lord For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters Which spreads out its roots by the river
12:09
And will not fear when heat comes But its leaf will be green And will not be anxious in the year of drought
12:18
Nor will cease from yielding fruit The heart is deceitful above all things
12:24
And desperately wicked Who can know it? I the
12:30
Lord search the heart I test the mind Even to give every man according to his ways
12:36
According to the fruit of his doings As a partridge that broods but does not hatch
12:43
So is he who gets riches But not by right It will leave him in the midst of his days
12:51
And at his end he will be a fool A glorious high throne from the beginning
12:58
Is the place of our sanctuary O Lord, the hope of Israel All who forsake you shall be ashamed
13:06
Those who depart from me shall be written in the earth Because they have forsaken the
13:11
Lord, the fountain of living waters Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed
13:18
Save me, and I shall be saved For you are my praise Indeed, they say to me
13:26
Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come now As for me, I have not hurried away from being a shepherd who follows you
13:34
Nor have I desired the woeful day You know what came out of my lips
13:40
It was right there before you Do not be a terror to me You are my hope in the day of doom
13:47
Let them be ashamed who persecute me But do not let me be put to shame
13:53
Let them be dismayed But do not let me be dismayed Bring on them the day of doom
14:00
And destroy them with double destruction Thus the
14:07
Lord said to me Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people
14:12
By which the kings of Judah come in And by which they go out And in all the gates of Jerusalem And say to them
14:19
Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah And all Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem Who enter by these gates
14:26
Thus says the Lord Take heed to yourselves And bear no burden on the Sabbath day
14:31
Nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem Nor carry a burden out of your houses on the
14:36
Sabbath day Nor do any work but hallow the Sabbath day As I commanded your fathers But they did not obey
14:44
Nor incline their ear But made their necks stiff That they might not hear
14:49
Nor receive instruction And it shall be if you heed me carefully Says the
14:54
Lord To bring no burden through the gates of this city On the Sabbath day But hallow the Sabbath day
15:00
To do no work on it Then shall enter the gates of this city Kings and princes
15:07
Sitting on the throne of David Riding in chariots and on horses They and their princes
15:12
Accompanied by the men of Judah And the inhabitants of Jerusalem And this city shall remain forever
15:19
And they shall come from the cities of Judah And from the places around Jerusalem From the land of Benjamin And from the lowland
15:26
From the mountains And from the south Bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices Grain offerings and incense
15:32
Bringing sacrifices of praise to the house of the Lord But if you will not heed me
15:38
To hallow the Sabbath day Such as not carrying a burden When entering the gates of Jerusalem On the
15:43
Sabbath day Then I will kindle a fire In its gates And it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem And it shall not be quenched
15:52
This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God Please take up the bulletin

28:51
Why do the nations rage And the people plot a vain thing
28:56
The kings of the earth set themselves And the rulers take counsel together Against the
29:02
Lord and against his anointed Saying let us break their bonds in pieces
29:07
And cast away their cords from us He who sits in the heavens
29:13
Shall laugh The Lord shall hold them in derision Then he shall speak to them
29:20
In his wrath And distress them In his deep displeasure Yet I have set my king
29:28
On my holy hill of Zion I will declare the decree
29:33
The Lord has said to me You are my son Today I have begotten you
29:40
Ask of me And I will give you the nations For your inheritance And the ends of the earth
29:47
For your possession You shall break them With a rod of iron
29:52
You shall dash them to pieces Like a potter's vessel Now therefore be wise,
30:00
O kings Be instructed, you judges of the earth Serve the
30:05
Lord with fear And rejoice with trembling Kiss the son
30:10
Lest he be angry And you perish in the way When his wrath is kindled but a little

30:53
That we may be filled up With all the fullness of God Amen You may be seated
31:03
Martin Lloyd -Jones The great Welsh preacher of the 20th century Often stated that the
31:09
Bible Alone of all books Gives an accounting Of what really is
31:17
Or what reality really is He says that this book answers
31:22
All of the great questions of life Among them What is wrong with the world?
31:29
How did it come to be this way? How can it be made right? How does this making things right
31:37
Affect me? How did this world come to be? Where is the world going?
31:45
How did life begin? And how does life begin? Or when did life begin?
31:51
And yes, even a question That has stumped many in our days The Bible answers that question
31:57
What is a woman? It also provides us answers To the events which we see
32:03
Unfolding around us That have unfolded in history And what we see
32:08
In the pages of scripture The Bible deals with facts
32:15
And this psalm is no different It provides an accounting Of facts of how people react to God And how
32:23
God reacts to them Although this psalm does not bear An author's name
32:29
It has been historically and biblically Attributed to David This is a psalm of David It is about or points to The literal
32:40
David But also more particularly David's greater son
32:45
The Lord Jesus Christ We see the events surrounding The establishment of David on his throne
32:51
The opposition he faced From Saul when Saul first learned Of David's anointing in favor with God And then the opposition of Ish -bosheth
33:00
Saul's son in Abner We also see the events surrounding The true king of Israel The son of David, the
33:08
Lord Jesus Christ The opposition of the devil The opposition of the religious Establishment in his day
33:14
The opposition of the Jewish And Roman political order And the opposition of the spread
33:21
Of Christianity throughout the world In the time of the apostles And down to this day
33:27
However, this psalm points To the final triumph Of the Lord Jesus The psalm can be broken down Into four parts
33:35
Verses one through three The nation's raging and rebelling Against God Verses four through six
33:43
God's response to the nation's Verses seven through nine The king's decree
33:50
Verses ten through twelve The king's command Let us take a look
33:56
At verse one Why do the nation's rage And the people plot
34:01
A vain thing This is nothing more And nothing less,
34:07
I should say Than unbridled hatred Of Christ The hatred of human nature
34:13
Against Christ The psalm opens with a question Why do the nation's rage
34:20
And the people Plot a vain thing When we think of raging We think of two things
34:26
Typically we think of anger Or somebody losing control In anger, or wrath has gotten
34:33
So built up inside of somebody That they let fly But we also may be thinking
34:39
Of an ocean, say When a great storm comes through I know we live particularly close
34:46
To the ocean And many of you may have gone down To the seashore and seen the ocean
34:51
Raging in storm Or seen it depicted in movies This is a picture
34:58
Of a stormy ocean Of a raging, out of control Tossed to and fro
35:04
The nation, that is The people have lost all control And they're raging
35:10
The apostle Paul tells us In Colossians 3 .8 that with Anger and wrath is also
35:16
Accompanied with malice Slander and obscene Talk, that anger
35:22
And wrath produce bitterness Proverbs 15 .18 Says that a hot tempered
35:28
Man stirs up Strife, all of these Things are bound together here
35:34
The nations are raging And they're plotting in vain Have we not seen
35:40
The nations raging in our own day Have we not seen it In our own lives perhaps
35:45
An example of this may be A response to the pro -life movement That we've seen recently
35:51
This raging of the pro -abortion Pro -death crowd is raging
35:56
Against the very thought That a baby would be born This raging is
36:02
Uncontrolling and uncontrolled Rather, venting of emotions But what are they
36:08
Doing in their rage They are plotting A vain thing The Hebrew word that is translated plotting
36:16
Is to murmur and ponder The old King James version called it
36:22
Imagine In Acts 4 where this verse is quoted The Greek word that is translated
36:28
Imagine means revolve around The mind or meditate Upon They're conjuring up in their minds
36:35
They're thinking about in their imaginations Plotting vain things In their wrath
36:42
Imagine an angry man Imagining how he might vent his anger On the object of his anger
36:48
Running over in his mind many plans But they Are not alone
36:54
If we turn to verse 2 we read this The kings of the earth Set themselves and the rulers
37:00
Take counsel together Against the Lord and against His anointed Saying The people are not alone
37:09
And it's not only the people that rage A man once said The many have done their part
37:15
And now the mighty will join in With them It is rarely the people alone
37:21
The leaders of the people are always involved When it is good That is the leadership of people
37:27
When that is good the people rejoice Proverbs 29 2 tells us When the righteous are in authority
37:32
The people rejoice But when the wicked are in charge The people are led astray
37:38
The leaders will provide what the people want Paul warns us of this
37:44
In 2 Timothy 4 3 -4 For the time will come When they will not endure sound doctrine
37:51
But according to their own desires Because they have itching ears They will heap up for themselves
37:57
Teachers And they will turn their ears Away from the truth The leaders of the people
38:05
Always give them What they want Isn't it the case
38:10
When the wicked turn their ears From the truth and focus On the lie
38:16
But what are these leaders doing? They are setting themselves And they are taking counsel
38:23
They are setting themselves The Hebrew word translated Set Means to position
38:29
They are taking up a position It is like a military position
38:35
They are standing fast This is not a fit of passion Sometimes we think of Anger or wrath or raging
38:43
That somebody has lost control But not in this case This is something where They are doing it deliberately
38:51
They are setting themselves Against with the intent To continue their opposition
38:57
They are setting themselves For war And they are not only setting themselves
39:03
They are taking counsel together All this is done deliberately The raging, the plotting
39:09
The setting is all done On purpose They are planning for it
39:15
It is not done in haste It is the outcome of careful planning We may think of Pharaoh And Annas When Pharaoh considered
39:25
The fact that the Israelites Were growing and prospering He said let us deal
39:31
Wisely with them He took counsel with his Wise men and leaders
39:37
To destroy the Hebrew children Specifically the males And Annas who was related to the high priest
39:44
And had been high priest himself Saw the situation with Jesus Getting out of hand And he
39:51
Gathered together with his cronies And the religious Leaders and he said it is expedient
39:58
That one should die For the nation They are taking counsel
40:03
And with sinners All of their counsel Is wise to evil
40:11
But what is the object Of their Setting themselves
40:17
Of their taking counsel We read here it said It is against the Lord And against his anointed
40:25
All of this raging All of this plotting All of this setting Is directed to the
40:31
Lord And his anointed But why Why all this raging
40:38
Why the plotting Why the purpose of setting themselves What has caused this unity
40:45
Of the people With their leaders Well we have it given to us
40:51
Right here in verse 3 They say let us break their bonds In pieces and cast
40:57
Away their cords From us They are rebelling against the Lord They are saying
41:05
We will not have this man Rule over us We will not submit We will not have
41:11
God define for us What male or female is What young or old is
41:17
Or what a marriage is Or who is righteous We will not have it
41:23
They are saying it is up to us To make something of life We will have the right to define
41:29
What happiness really is Or define what success is Or define what life itself is
41:35
Notice that the verse Starts with let us Let us
41:41
It seems How often it is That when men
41:47
Rebel against God It starts with a simple thought Let us We see this in several places in scripture
41:55
In the incident around the Tower of Babel recounted for us In Genesis 11 3 through 4
42:02
They said Then they said to one another Come let us make
42:09
Bricks and bake them Thoroughly They had brick for stone
42:14
And they had asphalt for mortar And they said come let us build Ourselves a city and a tower
42:21
Whose top is in the heavens Let us make a name for ourselves Lest we be scattered
42:26
Abroad over the face of the earth Again we see it As mentioned
42:32
With Pharaoh's plot against the Hebrew Children recounted for us In Exodus 1 10
42:38
The children of Israel were getting to be too populous And the Egyptians were afraid
42:43
That if they had gone to war The Hebrews may side with their enemies Come let us
42:49
Deal wisely Let us kill the boys Lest they become our enemy
42:55
And we see this again Even with the people of God In the
43:00
Exodus When Moses had tarried On the mountaintop When he had spent this time with the
43:06
Lord The people came together In the golden calf incident Said let us make gods
43:12
For ourselves For this Moses we do not know What has become of him
43:17
And by extension what has become of God They are saying we want
43:23
Freedom to do all Our abominations We want no law over us
43:29
No restraints on our behavior They're calling the perfect law of liberty As James said
43:34
The law of God They're calling them cords And bonds of slavery
43:40
They want to give full vent To their lusts Paraphrasing Ephesians 2
43:46
They want to walk According to the course of this world According to the prince of the power of the air
43:52
The spirit that now is working In the sons of disobedience They not only want to walk in these things
43:58
They want to be sons of disobedience Fulfilling the desires of the flesh And of the mind
44:03
And by nature make themselves Children of wrath They want to be their own gods
44:10
They want to be rid Of all restraints In other words they want to be as God Has anything changed?
44:18
Had we not seen this before? We may remember That we have this
44:24
Constant A constant temptation To be as God And not only this
44:32
Not only do they imagine Vanity Foolishness and folly
44:37
Not only do they set themselves And make plans against God And his anointed But they think it will be easy to do
44:45
They think they can easily break The bonds and the cords Of God And cast them away
44:52
They imagine themselves as Samson's Being able to snap the cords And cast them aside
44:59
So very easily Where there is much rage Proverbs tells us, there is much folly
45:07
And where do we see this? Where do we see This behavior carried out?
45:13
Well I mentioned the Tower of Babel Incident, I mentioned Pharaoh But we have seen it in the gospel accounts
45:19
We've seen it leading up to The crucifixion When the religious leaders and the chief priests
45:25
And the political leaders And the people all plotted Against Jesus In Luke 23 it says, even
45:32
Herod And Pilate, who were enemies Became united Against Jesus This is summarized for us
45:41
In Acts 4, 27 and 28 For truly Against your holy servant
45:47
Jesus Whom you anointed Both Herod and Pontius Pilate With the
45:52
Gentiles And the people of Israel Were gathered together To do whatever your hand
45:57
And your purpose determined to be done But we also saw this behavior
46:03
Against the apostles themselves In that same chapter 4 Where this psalm is quoted
46:09
It is not only Pointing to the conspiracy And confederacy against Jesus But also against them
46:17
In their preaching The same leaders Forbade the apostles to speak
46:23
And preach in the name of the Lord Jesus And we've seen this Throughout history
46:28
Not only in the Roman Empire In the early days of the Christian faith The Roman Empire attempted to extinguish
46:34
The faith Only to be conquered by it We've seen this in our own day
46:41
Perhaps in the last Hundred years plus Where communism tried to blot out
46:47
The name of Christ They wanted to be His God They wanted to define good and evil
46:54
Defining what history is And who man is Oh how the nations have raged
46:59
And the people imagined a vain thing And we have seen The rebellion
47:05
We have seen That people are
47:10
Rebelling against God And against His anointed But how does God respond?
47:16
In verse 4 we have this He who sits In the heavens
47:21
Shall laugh The Lord shall hold them In derision
47:28
So the scene Shifts here From the raging and the counsel
47:33
Of the leaders and the wicked Against the Lord and against His anointed And the scene shifts to the throne room
47:40
Of God And we see the Lord The King, the rightful ruler Of all things
47:46
As He considers what's going on He laughs The Lord sees
47:53
What fools they are Note the difference between the two scenes There's raging on the one hand
48:00
And no activity On the other, just sitting The tempest of raging
48:06
Is replaced with the quiet Of the throne room Think about the account of our
48:11
Lord Calming the sea, one moment Raging, the next moment Complete calm
48:18
There's no taking of Counsel, no setting No plotting, just Laughter Have you learned to laugh with God?
48:29
Have you seen The raging of the people around you? The enemies of God, the rulers And leaders and proper authorities
48:37
Are you scared Of what they may do? Do you have anxiety? Do you think that the rulers
48:43
The kings of the earth, the enemies of God Will round us up and put us into Concentration camps And make all manner of sport with us?
48:52
Or do you With God Laugh at their vain plotting Laugh at their impudent plans
49:00
Matthew Henry The commentator noted Sinner's follies Are the just sport of God's Infinite wisdom and power
49:09
And those attempts of the Kingdom of Satan Which in our eyes are formidable
49:15
In his Are despicable The Lord does not take
49:21
The trouble to rise up and do battle with them But rather He despises them
49:27
He knows that they are absurd He knows that they are impotent He knows that they are irrational
49:33
And that their efforts are futile He holds Them in contempt
49:38
What shall man do to him? Can he frustrate his plans?
49:44
Can man defeat His purposes? Can he injure his servants Completely?
49:51
No No matter the confederations No matter the combinations, no matter how powerful
49:57
They may appear They can do nothing To upset
50:03
Or change God's sovereign plans Decisions And purposes
50:09
But notice the repetition here We see laughter
50:15
And derision This Hebrew word Comes from the same root
50:21
And it is a repetition Of laughter And this repetition of this theme of laughter
50:27
Should give us great hope God's laughter God's holding them in derision
50:33
Is shown that despite All the planning, all the plotting All the scheming
50:39
Will come to naught Many of you know that in Hebrew When something is repeated
50:44
It is not just for importance But is a fact, a sure thing These plans
50:51
Of the wicked will come to an end But let us now consider Verses 5 and 6 Then he shall speak to them in his wrath
50:58
And distress them in his deep displeasure Yet I have set my king On my holy hill
51:05
Of Zion After His laughter he shall speak
51:10
He will answer then But he need not strike a blow The breath of his lips
51:17
Are enough In 2 Thessalonians 2 .8 we have this When the lawless one will be revealed
51:23
And make no mistake The people who were raging The leaders, they were lawless ones
51:29
They did not want any law To bound them, they certainly did not want The law of God Whom the
51:35
Lord will consume With the breath of his mouth And destroy with the brightness
51:40
Of his coming We see this again in Job 4 .9 But by the blast of God They perish
51:48
And by the breath of his anger They are consumed The breath of his lips
51:54
Are enough Just when it appears That the enemies have the upper hand
52:00
Then his word will go forth And destroy them But what is
52:06
God's response to all this How does he answer the enemies How does he address their
52:12
Raging and their imagining How does he speak to the ones who Set themselves against him
52:18
And against his anointed He says this Yet I have set my king
52:24
On my holy hill Of Zion The very thing
52:29
That they were hoping to do With themselves God says I have done it
52:35
I have set my king Isaiah 59 .19 says When the enemy comes in like a flood
52:41
The spirit of God Will lift up a standard Against them And what is that standard
52:48
The Lord Jesus Christ The king set upon Zion The very thing
52:53
That the enemy wanted Is to take over The opportunity to set up shop for themselves
52:59
To rule and make laws And decide right from wrong Good and evil They saw the opportunity
53:06
To rule for themselves Yet God says I have set my king
53:11
On my holy hill Of Zion When God's will is done Man frets
53:18
In vain God has set his king The kings of the earth The presidents and prime ministers of the earth
53:25
The potentates and dictators of the earth Are nothing Compared to our king
53:32
I have set my king The nations of this world The rulers are accounted As nothing compared to Christ Isaiah 40 verse 15 says this
53:41
Behold the nations are a drop In a bucket And are accounted as small dust
53:47
On the scales They may look powerful to us But not to God Unlike the imaginations of the people
53:54
And their leaders Who thought it would be an easy thing To break the bonds and cords of God God's will is an easy thing
54:03
For him He has spoken it And it is done Now let us turn
54:10
To verse 7 In verse 7 we read I will declare the decree
54:16
The Lord has said to me You are my son Today I have
54:22
Begotten you This is where the anointed speaks We have looked into the councils of the wicked
54:28
We have looked into the throne room of God And now another Is speaking to us
54:33
I declare the decree The Lord has said to me You are my son
54:40
Today I have Begotten you This is the anointed of God This is the king of God Declaring his rights of sovereignty
54:48
And warning against rebellion And their impending doom And not only does this refer to Christ's kingship
54:56
Just a quick aside This particular verse is quoted
55:01
In Hebrews 1 5 Establishing Christ as preeminent
55:09
In all things as the king But in Hebrews 5 5 We also read this verse quoted So also
55:14
Christ did not glorify himself To become high priest But it was he who said to him
55:21
You are my son Today I have Begotten you It establishes
55:26
Jesus as king and as priest This is further evidence That this psalm is talking about The Lord Jesus Christ The preeminence of Christ in all things
55:36
As prophet, priest, and king Christ acts as a king Towards us
55:41
And toward the father as a priest On our behalf God has laughed at the wicked
55:47
Now Christ the anointed Who had been declared to be the son of God With power
55:53
According to the spirit of holiness By the resurrection from the dead We read in Romans 1 4
55:59
The Lord Jesus speaks And seems to say to the raving Their arrogant claims
56:05
What we read in Psalm 46 10 Be still And know that I am
56:11
God I will be exalted Among the nations I will be exalted
56:16
On the earth The declaration was a direct conflict
56:21
Of what sinful man wants Sinful man wants dominion Sinful man wants to be his
56:27
God This has been true from the very beginning In Genesis 3 Verses 4 and 5
56:33
We read of the original temptation Of our first parents And the devil said
56:39
When we read here The serpent who is the devil said to the woman You will not surely die
56:45
For God knows that in the day That you eat of it your eyes will be opened And you will be
56:51
Like God That's the temptation To be like God But the one who is speaking
57:00
To them is God The Lord said to me You are my son
57:05
Today I have begotten you This is the heir, the Lord Jesus Christ This is as God says
57:13
My son Hebrews 1 verses 1 through 3 God who at various times
57:18
And in various ways spoke In time past to the fathers By prophets has in these last days
57:25
Spoken to us by his son Whom he appointed Heir of all things
57:30
Through him whom also He made the worlds Who being the brightness of his glory
57:36
The express image of his person And upholding all things By the word of his power
57:42
When he had by himself Purged our sins Sat down at the right hand
57:48
Of the majesty on high This is Emmanuel God with us
57:54
We may remember In Isaiah 9 For unto us a child is born
58:00
Unto us a son is given And the government will be upon his shoulder And his name will be called
58:05
Wonderful Counselor Mighty God Everlasting Father Prince of Peace This is clearly pointing
58:16
To the Lord Jesus Christ But let us now turn our eyes To verse 8 Ask of me
58:21
And this is still the anointed Quoting the father We'll go back to verse 7
58:26
I will declare this decree The Lord said to me You are my son today
58:32
I have begotten you Ask of me And I will give you The nations for your inheritance
58:37
And the ends of the earth For your possession It was a common practice
58:42
In times of old were great kings To ask favor of the ones That they wanted to bestow
58:49
A favor upon We know this in several instances We can see this in Esther 5 3
58:54
Where we read this And the king said to her What do you wish Queen Esther What is your request
59:01
It will be given to you Up to have the kingdom And we know that This is something
59:10
That was promised By an oath We think of even perverted
59:15
Herod Would do this It was a common practice You remember when Herod was at this feast
59:21
And he had the daughter of his brother's wife Dancing in front of him And then he promised her with an oath
59:27
To give her whatever she wanted But this is a different kind of promise This is a promise from God Jesus had been asked
59:36
And it will be given to him Note that his enemies Are even his inheritance
59:43
Not only Does the Lord laugh at the wicked Not only will all The plans and plotting of the nations
59:50
And kings come to nothing But they shall be subjects To the anointed
59:57
Remember the temptation Of our Lord Recounted for us in Matthew 4 8 We read this
01:00:03
Again the devil took him up On an exceeding high mountain And showed him all the kingdoms of the world
01:00:10
And of their glory And he said to them all these things I will give to you If you will fall down And worship me
01:00:17
We need not think that somehow Having all the kingdoms given to the Lord Jesus Christ Was the bad thing
01:00:24
No It was an illegitimate giving They were not Satan's to give
01:00:30
But here The anointed is asked What would he receive The kingdoms of the world
01:00:37
And of their glory He was going to receive them in a different way By the crucifixion
01:00:45
You may be saying to yourself Well when did this all happen We see it When did it happen
01:00:51
I believe this happened After the ascension Daniel has a vision of this event for us
01:00:57
Which is recounted in Daniel 7 13 and 14 I was watching in the night vision to behold
01:01:03
One like the son of man Coming with the clouds of heaven He came to the ancient of days
01:01:09
And they brought him near Before him Then to him was given dominion and glory
01:01:15
And a kingdom that all Peoples nations and languages Should serve him
01:01:22
His dominion As an everlasting dominion Which shall not pass away
01:01:28
And his kingdom The one which shall not be destroyed Think of that other vision in Daniel The great statue of gold
01:01:36
And silver And bronze and iron and clay And the stone not cut with hands
01:01:42
Coming down and destroying the statue And filling the earth
01:01:48
At the ascension of our lord There was a great victory parade Which I believe is recounted for us In Psalm 24
01:01:55
Verses 7 and 8 we read this Lift up your heads O you gates
01:02:00
And be lifted up you everlasting doors And the king of glory
01:02:06
Shall come in Who is This king of glory The lord
01:02:13
Strong and mighty The lord mighty in battle Excuse me Lift up the ancient gates
01:02:34
And allow the king of glory To come in And what was the victory That was being celebrated
01:02:40
The cross And it was an unexpected victory Was it not
01:02:46
Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2 Which none of the rulers
01:02:51
Of this age knew What didn't they know That the cross would be their doom
01:02:57
For had they known They would not have crucified The lord of glory
01:03:03
Talk about the heathen raging Talk about people plotting in vain What didn't they know
01:03:09
That I have set my king On my holy hill And I have given him
01:03:15
The kingdoms of this world And remember This is not a future event
01:03:23
Revelations 11 15 says this The kingdoms of this world Have become
01:03:29
Past tense The kingdoms of our lord And of his Christ And he shall reign forever and ever
01:03:37
And you should be hearing That refrain from Handel's Messiah Ringing in your ears
01:03:42
And he shall reign Forever and ever But let us look on further
01:03:51
In verse 9 We read this And you shall break them With the rod of iron
01:03:57
And you will dash them To pieces Like a potter's vessel
01:04:02
Verse 5 and 9 go together Then he shall speak to them In his wrath
01:04:08
And distress them in his deep displeasure You shall break them With the rod of iron
01:04:13
And you will dash them To pieces like a potter's vessel When he
01:04:21
Shall become angry In his wrath He shall break them with the rod of iron
01:04:26
Unlike what the heathen thought That it would be easy to break the cords This will be as easy as Breaking a clay pot
01:04:34
With an iron rod And not only has God given him the right
01:04:40
But the power to conquer The enemies of God May appear to be strong They may appear to have the upper hand
01:04:47
They may appear to have the power But they will be easily defeated Like the breaking of a clay pot
01:04:53
Those who will not bend the knee Will be broken The rod is a symbol of authority
01:05:00
Like unto a scepter Remember the promise Or the prediction we might say
01:05:06
Or the prophecy of Jacob Towards his death When he was talking to his son
01:05:11
Judah The scepter shall not depart From Judah nor a lawgiver From between his feet
01:05:17
The king is the lawgiver And this is the scepter Of righteousness which we read
01:05:24
In Psalm 45 6 Your throne, O God Is forever and ever
01:05:30
And the scepter of righteousness Is the scepter of your kingdom And this is the scepter of judgment
01:05:36
On the nations And they shall not be able to stand Well let us consider
01:05:42
The last section of this psalm Now therefore Be wise,
01:05:48
O kings Be instructed, you judges of the earth Serve the Lord with fear
01:05:53
And rejoice with trembling Kiss the son Lest he be angry
01:05:58
And you perish in the way When his wrath is kindled but a little Blessed are all those
01:06:05
Who put their trust In him This is the counsel of the Lord We've heard the counsel of the wicked
01:06:13
This is the counsel of the Lord Now the decree has been said Now that the anointed has spoken
01:06:20
Now that the counsel of the wicked Has been set aside Laughed at and told
01:06:25
That it will amount to nothing Now the counsel of the Lord is given Now therefore be wise
01:06:32
Be instructed, you judges of the earth Serve the Lord with fear And rejoice with trembling
01:06:39
Be wise Always be wise And open to instruction Think of your own life
01:06:45
Are you open to instruction? Are you open to counsel? Are you open to the words
01:06:51
Of your brothers and sisters in Christ? Are you open to the instruction Of the Lord? Here he is saying to his enemies
01:06:59
Be wise, you cannot win In your raging Be wise, your plotting will not come to nothing
01:07:05
Be wise, you cannot win By your counsel Be wise, you cannot set yourself
01:07:11
Against the Lord And his anointed and win Be wise
01:07:17
Humble yourself Under the yoke of Christ Willingly Serve the
01:07:24
Lord with fear Fear and wisdom Go together Job 28 .28
01:07:30
tells us this And to the man he said Behold The fear of the
01:07:36
Lord That is wisdom And to depart from evil is understanding In Psalm 111 verse 10
01:07:43
We read this The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom A good understanding have all those
01:07:49
Who do his commandments His praise endures forever But as fear
01:07:55
And wisdom go together So do fear and service We should always serve the
01:08:01
Lord With loving fear Mingled with our obedience What is loving fear?
01:08:07
Have you ever thought of that? Well think of the honor That you show your earthly fathers
01:08:15
There may be fear mixed into it Which we might call respect And the obedience We are not only talking about our heavenly father
01:08:24
In this case But our king And we are his subjects Deuteronomy 6 .13
01:08:31
says this You shall fear the Lord your God And serve him Deuteronomy 13 .4
01:08:37
says You shall walk after the Lord your God And fear him And keep his commandments
01:08:42
And obey his voice You shall serve him And hold fast to him
01:08:48
Rejoice with trembling Not only are we commanded to serve the
01:08:53
Lord with fear But also to rejoice With trembling Fear without joy would be torment
01:09:01
Joy without fear Would be presumption On one hand is wickedness
01:09:08
On the other hand Licentiousness We must always
01:09:14
Have a holy fear Mixed with our Christian joy But then we read this
01:09:20
Kiss the son Lest he be angry And you perish in the way
01:09:26
A kiss A kiss Could be a sign of love amongst equals
01:09:32
It could be a sign Of subjection to a king It could be a sign of adoration
01:09:38
In worship Carnal men kiss Even treacherous men do
01:09:45
Think of Judas Betraying his lord with a kiss But this is the kiss
01:09:52
Of a subject to a king Willingly Earnestly Independence upon him
01:09:58
As your sovereign As your elder brother And you perish in the way
01:10:05
It is an awful thing To perish in the way of sin And rebellion It will cast you into hell
01:10:13
Psalm 7, 9, 11, and 13 Says this O let the wickedness of the wicked
01:10:19
Come to an end God is just judge And God is angry with the wicked every day
01:10:25
If he does not turn back He will sharpen his sword He bends his bows and makes it ready
01:10:32
He also Prepares for himself instruments of death He makes his arrows
01:10:38
Into firing shaft That is what the lord Is doing for the wicked
01:10:43
He is commanding them to kiss the sun And depart from their wickedness Lest they perish
01:10:49
And when the lord is preparing his bow And sharpening his sword And making his instruments
01:10:56
Of death ready They are coming for the wicked Remember Our god
01:11:03
Is a consuming fire But the last words of the psalm are these
01:11:10
Blessed are all Those who put their trust In him The psalm closes with a benediction
01:11:18
Blessed Are all those Who put their trust in him You may remember the last time
01:11:25
That we considered the psalms We looked at psalm number one And had opened with Blessed is the man
01:11:32
I just want to add I think it's amazing how providentially The lord brings things together
01:11:38
In our public reading from Jeremiah 17 Blessed Is the man
01:11:44
In our call to worship Blessed is the man The more we trust in the lord
01:11:51
The more we are obedient to him And the more we trust The more we are blessed
01:11:58
But how do we have this trust How can we trust The lord It is by faith
01:12:06
We know that the word tells us that the just Shall live by faith We might also paraphrase this and say
01:12:12
That the blessed shall live By faith But how is your faith
01:12:19
Is it weak Is it faint Do you have
01:12:24
Difficulty in trusting In the lord May we join our voices
01:12:30
Like the man Who came to the lord for healing of his son Where he said Lord I believe
01:12:37
But help my unbelief We might want to now compare this
01:12:44
First and second psalm real briefly They go together almost don't they They're like bookends
01:12:49
And it's a great way to start Our consideration of the book of psalms Psalm one
01:12:57
Opens with a Or rather provides a contrast of the Righteous man with the wicked Psalm two
01:13:04
Contrasts the raging disobedience Of the ungodly And the sure exultation
01:13:10
Of the righteous son of god Psalm one we see the wicked Driven away like chaff
01:13:17
In psalm two We see the wicked dashed to pieces As a clay pot And psalm one gives us an image
01:13:24
Of the righteousness of the tree that is planted By the rivers of water Psalm two
01:13:30
Shows us the triumphant christ The covenant king who blesses Those who put their trust in him
01:13:37
How excellent A way to begin Our study of the book of psalms
01:13:42
But we will close with this What about us
01:13:48
Let us take a look Back at verse twelve Kiss the son
01:13:54
Lest he be angry And you perish in the way When his wrath
01:13:59
Is kindled but a little Blessed are all those Who put their trust in him
01:14:06
First we have the command Kiss the son Then we have the argument or the reason
01:14:12
Lest he be angry When his wrath is kindled but a little Then we have
01:14:18
The benediction Blessed are all those who put their trust in him Have you
01:14:25
Kissed the son There are many who will rebel
01:14:31
Even after this Admonition to be wise Some will say we will not have this man
01:14:37
Rule over us God says kiss the son There are others who will say
01:14:43
We will not serve him he is a hard master He reaps where he did not sow And gathers where he did not scatter
01:14:49
God says Kiss the son Some will say We will not serve him
01:14:55
He gives us burdens grievous to bear God says Kiss the son
01:15:02
Some will also say Not quite as defiant I want to But I will
01:15:10
Lose so much that I hold dear If I submit to him God says
01:15:18
What is the profit Or what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world Yet loses his own soul
01:15:24
Kiss the son Let us kiss the son
01:15:30
Let us join with Isaiah who says this Greatly rejoice in the
01:15:36
Lord my soul Shall be joyful in my God For he has clothed me with the
01:15:42
Garments of salvation He has covered me with the robe of Righteousness as a bridegroom
01:15:48
Decks himself with ornaments And as a bride Adorns herself
01:15:53
With her jewels Brothers and sisters in Christ We are the bride of Christ We have been decked with the garments of Salvation Rejoice all of you who have kissed
01:16:08
The son Let us pray O merciful father Who is pleased to condescend to speak
01:16:16
To us through your word Grant us all grace That we may not be mere
01:16:21
Hearers of your word But doers also Give us the grace of your
01:16:27
Holy spirit that we may Believe what has been Proclaimed to us
01:16:32
And that we may have the grace To kiss you Lord Jesus the son
01:16:40
May we bring Glory and honor to your name And all that we do as you
01:16:45
Conform us to the image Of you lord Jesus Our savior in whose name we pray
01:16:51
Amen Now we'll transition to Our time of offering for Tithes and offerings
01:17:02
And as the Young men make their way To the front of the room please stand
01:17:08
Please stand
01:17:30
And let us pray Gracious heavenly father We remember the words of your lord
01:17:37
Jesus Christ that he himself said It is more blessed to give Than to receive
01:17:42
You have commanded us not to lay up Treasures for ourselves upon earth Where moth and rust destroy
01:17:48
Where thieves break in and steal But lay up for yourselves Treasures in heaven we are told
01:17:54
And commanded where neither moth Nor rust destroys Where thieves do break in or steal
01:18:01
And where the treasure is There will our hearts be also Heavenly father we pray
01:18:07
That as we parted with these treasures Of earthly value To the work of your kingdom that you would bless them
01:18:13
Greatly in that work And that by giving we too May be blessed
01:18:18
And we pray this in Christ's name Amen Let us lift up our voices in singing the glory of Patri As it was in the beginning
01:18:44
It is now and ever Shall be The lord be with you
01:19:00
And also with you Lift up your hearts We lift them up to the lord
01:19:05
Let us give thanks to the lord That it is good and right so to do It is a good
01:19:11
It is good and right And a joyful thing That we should at all times and in all places
01:19:18
Give thanks to you Oh holy lord father almighty Everlasting god
01:19:23
Because you sent your beloved son To redeem us from sin and death
01:19:28
And make us heirs in him Of everlasting life That when he shall come again
01:19:34
In power and great triumph To judge the world We may without shame
01:19:39
Or fear rejoice to behold His appearing Therefore with angels and archangels
01:19:44

01:21:22
And merciful father Who has given your son To reconcile us to yourself
01:21:27

01:21:32
With his most precious blood And has instituted this holy sacrament To be celebrated

In remembrance of him Until his coming Sanctify these creatures of bread and wine
01:21:45
Which according to your institution And command We set apart to this holy use
01:21:51
That they may be sacramentally The body and blood Of the son

Jesus Christ Amen The apostle
01:22:04
Paul Wrote for us In 1 Corinthians 11 23 26 These words
01:22:11
For I received From the lord that which I also Delivered to you
01:22:16
That the lord Jesus In the night in which he was Betrayed took bread
01:22:24
And when he had given thanks He broke it And said this is my body
01:22:31
Which is given for you Do this In remembrance of me
01:22:38
After supper He took the cup And when he had given thanks
01:22:43
He said this This is the cup of the new covenant In my blood
01:22:48
Do this as often as you drink it In remembrance of me For as often as you eat this bread
01:22:56
And drink the cup You proclaim the lord's death Until he comes again
01:23:04
Therefore We proclaim the faith Until he comes again
01:23:13
Let us pray together this prayer Of humble access We do not presume to come
01:23:19
To this your table O merciful lord Trusting in our own righteousness
01:23:25
But in your manifold And great mercies We are not worthy so much
01:23:31
As to gather up the crumbs Under your table But you are the same lord Who always shows mercy
01:23:38
Grant us therefore gracious lord So to eat the flesh Of your dear son
01:23:43
Jesus Christ And to drink of his blood That our sinful bodies May be made clean by his body
01:23:50
And our souls washed Through his most precious blood And that we may evermore
01:23:56
Dwell in him and he in us Amen Christ our Passover Was sacrificed for us
01:24:04
Therefore let us keep the feasts The gifts of God For the people of God Thanks be to the lord
