Revival — Johan vd Westhuysen

Believer, not just as an evangelist or a missionary or a preacher or whatever, but as a believer. And it came so strong into my mind, revival. So I sat down, I prayed about it, and I got a vision statement, because I believe that's the in thing, you must have a vision statement.

A Vision for National Spiritual Revival

Now mine will in no way pass, I think, the modern church's requirement, because my vision statement is simply this, a national spiritual revival. And if I can qualify that, the kind of revival that will lead to a true repentance and sorrow over sin, kind of a revival that will destroy the power of sin in a Christian's life.

And worldliness, a kind of revival that will generate a desire to be obedient, to be obedient to God's word, a kind of revival that will fire on a holy, holy ghost fire. I want to go back to the roots.

Holy ghost fire sounds more powerful to me than a Holy Spirit revival. But you know what I mean, just that's me. With the result, with the result, that sinners will come to salvation. But it must start in the church.

It has to, because we talk about revival. And there cannot be revival unless you've been revived. My English, but I'm sure you understand what I mean. Revivals for the church. And then the guy went on, he said, you must have a mission, which is true.

If we only have vision, it's like having, you know, building sandcastles or La Castilla. And we start even painting them and feel good about them. We must have a mission. And my mission is to be part of that revival in my minute area where I operate.

That I will do everything possible to promote a revival wherever God sends me. Through prayer for revival, because there cannot and will not be revival without prayer. God is sovereign. He can bypass that, but it's not the normal thing.

And then also to do my little thing, wherever I have the opportunity to preach. To preach the gospel with convincing, convicting power. And honestly, my prayer is for revival. Like in the days of Finney or maybe Jonathan Edwards, while he was still preaching, people fell to the ground, confessing their sins, turning to God.

My mission for my vision and my mission. And it's amazing, you know, throughout my 20 plus years serving the Lord, I've often read about revival. Then I will pray a little bit about revival. But next day, I forgot about revival.

I wake up at night. This morning, I actually woke up with a nightmare. I forgot my, I was dreaming. I forgot my notes. And I'm preaching here today. And I was searching for my notes. And the time passed.

And eventually the people left. I was still searching for, oh, what a nightmare for a pastor, for a preacher. But anyway, but in that process, revival, praying for the Spirit to come, which I did. So it's like dominating my mind and my heart for various reasons.

And I, I don't think we have to detail these reasons. We're all intelligent and we understand what's going on in the world. We understand and we cannot be blind for what is going on in the churches. We need a revival.

Revival Begins With Prayer and Spiritual Thirst

We were praying in the car. Forgive me. It's a testimony, so I can say about us. We were praying in the car. And I started praying for our country. And suddenly, a sorrow came upon my heart like I never had for South Africa before.

I just kept quiet and in I went on praying. We need revival. And I have prepared in Afrikaans, so my scriptures are all in Afrikaans. And Andrew, you will have to translate the scriptures if you don't mind, because maybe I can remember them, but we will try.

Psalm 85, 7, actually our scripture for the morning. Do not be drunk with wine, in which is a lot of dissipation, but be continuously filled with the Holy Spirit. That, my friends, Christian life, normal Christian life.

Somebody say enough, Amen. Psalm 85, 7, Psalm 42, 2. And then again, just as a reminder, Psalm 85, 7. With our country, with that which is going on in the car, we are being encouraged to start with the pure spectrum.

From the super-starched to the charismatic. And God gave us the wonderful ability to adopt. Because I've learned one thing, that most of those people love Jesus Christ. We may not do it all the same way, but they love Jesus Christ.

And of course, we look at the fruit in their lives. And in our lives, of course, always. So, the first thing, we have to thirst for righteousness. It is a heart that is thirsty in the desert, that we dare to call out, so thirsty my soul to you, O God.

While, I don't know many of you are preachers, but while I prepare, and I always look for a confirmation, a confirmation of the Word. And I think, and I know, I have to, it was Tuesday, I have to speak about this message today, about this verse.

And I have a Bible on my right, which I have never made, no one should believe it. Someone gave it to me, and it's one of the modern translations, not bad, it's not. So, I go to the Bible, just to see, what does it say about this verse?

And there is a piece of paper. The inscription, why do we need resurrection? Nine points. I say, wow, thank you Jesus, you have just confirmed for me the whole thing, that I am now going to prepare in this Word.

I don't know about you who preach, but then you come Sunday morning, or Saturday morning, and you think, yes, I can preach the Word. Then you go to your archives, and then you look for something to preach.

But boy, the Holy Spirit has taken you, and then you go to hell, because you have wasted a lot of time, to come out of here to the message, that He has given you. I don't know about you, but that's how it works with me.

And if it's not with you, then it's not for me, please. So, we get this confirmation, and I want to read to you these nine things, that are on this letter, even in Afrikaans. I have scanned it, and I have typed it here.

This is now for your language mixers of the moon. When do we need resurrection? When do I choose to work rather than to offer? Almost. When is it easier to criticize than to have love? When novel literature, I think this is very old, because there should have been a TV show, when novel literature has more appeal than the Bible, when I have God-given opportunities for me rather than to do it, when the club gets more financial support from me than the church,.

Do you know the story of the 200 Rand Nood and the 10 Rand Nood? 10 Rand Nood asks the 200 Rand Nood, where have you been? I haven't seen you in a long time. He says, where have you been? I was in Paris, and I went all around, and I saw all the wonderful things, and I went on a boat trip, and man, I had a terrible, wonderful two months.

And where were you, 10 Rand? Ah, as you know, church, church, church, church. And so it goes for many months. And then he says, when it is easier to sleep in the church than to stay awake, when it is more pleasure to boast than to praise, when it is easier to condemn styles than to pray for their salvation, when it is easier to kiss a skirt than to forgive, then we need a revival.

But I can tell you, there is a very long list, different long lists, which put together revivalists over the centuries, and which was suitable for their own time, I believe. I have added a few of my own.

Worldliness, First Love, and the Need for Revival

When television is more attractive than the gathering of the saints, when the secular, when we are so busy with the secular, that we don't have any more time for the spiritual, and that is a great Western salvation, I am so busy with the things of the Lord.

And he is right, because he is already busy. People can never be too busy with the things of the Lord. When I think, I have nothing against it, and I approach it easily, when sorrows do not enter the body of Christ, when the first love has left, in this Matthew 24, verse 12, and because the iniquity is increased, the love of the Lord will cool.

And then one or two, which I want to elaborate on a little more. When our co-existence shifts from a spirit-filled freedom, to an academic stiffness. This is why I don't want to speak in English, because I can't say it well in English.

Can I say it again? When a spirit-filled freedom shifts, or shifts, to an academic stiffness. No more Jesus-focused services, which are absolutely not guarded, mastered and accompanied by the Holy Spirit.

But formulated services, which are not kept up by the Holy Spirit. I want to tell you, we will never get a revival in our lives, as long as our God does not limit it with the Holy Spirit. We have experience of this.

In our own life. In places where we serve, where these services last five hours, the Spirit of God comes down with power. Because we give Him the opportunity to work, to do what He wants to do. When you look at the screens, at the speech in languages, and all our punctuated words, and I don't speak the nominational way.

When you look at these wonderful, good screens, even I have heard that the speech in languages is outdated. Jesus helps us. The Word of God, must not prevent us from speaking in languages. When the Word of God is preached, and it is made soft, it is inspired by knowledge, instead of inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Last week we met a preacher, here in the old church with us, and he speaks directly from the New African High Word Book. So much so, that I don't have a cooking stove that I can use. Then I take those African words, and I translate them, I go back and look where their roots are, because usually those big African words have roots in English.

And then he speaks of the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes. Jesus helps us. I say to the people later on, I say, listen, do you speak like this? Yes. And the old man says to me, it is a miracle that I am empty.

It is like the old man who said, scintillate, scintillate my new celestial corpus, how I contemplate the distance of your existence. Instead of saying, twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder where you are.

Preaching the Word With Conviction

When the Gospel is made cheaply, someone says recently, a lot of preachers are like cats, whose nails have been filed and pulled. He speaks so softly, about your heart. He makes you feel good, in your beauty.

The word no longer cuts through the mouth and legs. It no longer cuts, and it no longer hits the heart. So the old man speaks, and he says, if you do not investigate your faith, there is a danger of an eschatological consequence.

The old preacher comes to him and says, what did you mean? Did you actually say, if you do not repent, you will go to hell? He says, yes, that is what I meant. Why don't you say that? You see, preaching, is a thing that needs to hit people in the heart.

It does not always have to be, good words, homiletical, I almost look like I am going to puke. It never has to be homiletically and harmonetically correct. As long as it is filled with the Holy Spirit, then God's Word will cut through hearts, and He will cut off the legs of the mink, and people will come to repentance.

We can not put people in their places. Just recently, and maybe some of you have read it, someone brought it to me, there is a religious actress in a Sunday Koran. She says, the Lord's love has pulled me, but He has not made me weak.

They go on, and they proudly go on with it. I ask you in my heart, that you ever confess Christ. That you ever wept before Jesus Christ, and said, Lord have mercy for me. I am a lost soul. And today there are thousands, and thousands, and thousands of believers, who have never, ever confessed their sins to God, through sackcloth and ashes.

They never broke down before God. And that is why they cannot enter, the victorious Christian life. They call on the grace of God. But they do not want to keep the conditions of grace. And immediately someone says, grace is grace.

There is no conditions for grace. There are. You have to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You have to believe the Gospel of Christ. You have to repent of your sin. And you have to ask Christ to be your Saviour, and receive Him as your Saviour, as your King, and as your Master.

You must be baptized in water as a believer. And, you must forgive others, otherwise He cannot forgive you. Conditions for grace. And when those conditions are met, the amazing grace of Christ Jesus kicks in.

The grace of salvation is so great. Some claim salvation without these things. They stand under the canopies, like a gazebo, and they think they can sin underneath that gazebo of grace. It is not what the Bible teaches us.

Grace is expensive. It never came cheap. And it is not automatic. Last week, there was another article in one of these Sunday papers. Complete medical, scientific research, and answers to the issue of homosexuality.

Christian Conviction and Cultural Pressure

And, our host, where we were staying, she brought me the article and said, John, please read this and tell me what you think. Now, I must confess, I must admit, not confess, I must admit, that it sounds very true, the reasons, scientific medical reasons.

I don't understand all of those words anyway, but it sounded good. And it sounded true. And she came, later she came to me, she said, what do you think? I said to her, well, it's a lot of medical stuff, I don't really know.

It sounds good. But I want to remain on the safe side. I believe what God has said in many places in the Bible about this issue. And the reason why I'm talking about this, we're living in the last days, my friend.

Soon, and listen to me, leader, soon and very soon, this thing will come knocking at your door. And therefore, we need to be revived in the Holy Spirit, to take a stand, like this minister in Middleburg or wherever, Wittman wherever, he said, this girl cannot sing in our church anymore, he cancelled the whole thing.

And the whole world is against him. The whole world, even Christians, approve of her condition, and not of him taking a stand. I'm telling you today, friends, we need revival to take a stand against these wrongs, these atrocities, and other demonic things, that are becoming more and more Bible-lovable, even in our churches.

It's coming. It's coming. Are we ready? We need him in the Bible. How desperately is our thirst for truth. Forty to sixty years ago, the church influenced the world. Even Finney's days in the 1700s, Andrew Murray's days in the 1860s.

But as recently as forty to sixty years ago, there was a powerful work in the church, and the reporters of the different newspapers came, and they reported what the church was doing. The church was influencing the world.

Now we are at a time when the world influences the church, and it's very open, it's very clear, it's not rocket science that is happening, it's true. And the only time that we hit the news, is when some prominent pastor falls into sin, or sexual sin, or money sin, that's when the church hits the news.

Make headlines. We need revival. We need everything we have to come into place, so that we can resist as the body of Christ the evil forces of Satan. Oh, how thirsty are you to drink of that fountain.

How thirsty are you. The world has infiltrated the church so much that it uses, it's doing away with all the old Biblical terms. Give it new fashion names. We're no longer saints, as by the way, the new King James Version says, not the old, the old also.

Afrikaans says, ons is de heilige. But today we're becoming partners, a business term inside the church. I'm sorry if I, but I have to say these things, somebody has to say it. You know, the world is falling for corruption because good people are quiet.

People with a word in their hearts are just quiet. We dare not speak out, because we may offend the biggest offender of all times was the Lord Jesus Christ. You hypocrites! You bunch of, what was it? Dead bones!

Brood of vipers! No wonder they crucified Him. No wonder. Every one of the apostles died a martyr's death except John. No wonder that there are still 100 ,000 plus martyrs per year for the Christian faith.

Did you know that? Because people stand for the truth and the truth offends the world. The world will have no love for the church, man. And we should not sacrifice our love for neighbors at the cost of the truth in the church of Jesus Christ.

We have to stand for that. We need revival. Question to you. I don't have a chance to explain it. I will not be able to explain it today. Will my life, I don't know if you should listen carefully, Will my life be guided by my faith or my conviction?

My life, is it controlled by my, by what I believe? By my faith in Christ and in the Word of God? Or have my lusts and lusts become the thing that controls my faith conviction? And before you answer this question to yourself, you have to stop and think a little.

We don't have much, we don't have a lot of us, not where I fit my faith in my doing and letting. Not necessarily, but that's the important thing. And I have to stop for a moment. Then I will adjust to the faith.

While my dear friend, we, you and I as believers, have to adjust to the Word of God. Is two different criteria. You say, you wonder how can I say something like that? If I told you that believers would apply, apply the law, bring their lives in line with the Word of God, then every church and school would be full in the morning and in the evening.

Prioritizing the Gathering of Believers

Because the Word of God says, Hebrews 10, you must not neglect your subordinates in income. As some have the habit, especially now that the day of the Lord is approaching. Do you hear what I am saying to you?

We make so much, make so much effort not to live up to the common things. You make such an effort and then you feel good. While we have to look for a kingdom to be there. We need a life. Can you say Amen?

We are our children of God after all. We have to look after ourselves. It is no longer us who live. It is still God who lives in us. He is number one, number four. Priority, the hope of our existence.

I think you will start when I hear a refrain in your heart. It will not make us alive again to the Word. So that we can remain in it. Now come, let's get away from that. Where is this miracle fountain of life?

We have the answer in our Scripture. He prays. He says, you are the answer. You are this miracle fountain. Jesus Christ is the source. Of this life. We have to drink from that fountain. If we want this life.

And we have to think right. Because He is wonderful. He is Councilman. He is Church God. He is Eternal Father. He is Peace God. He is the first and the last. He is the eternal, the Lord. He is the Alpha and the Omega.

The beginning and the end. He has the way, the truth and the life. The life and the resurrection. He has the door into the Kingdom of God. He has the path to the Kingdom of God. He is the living water.

Drink from me. And you will never get thirsty again. Never get thirsty. For what? Not for anything good. But Christ and Him alone. There is no alternative for a spiritual experience. We can plan, plan and plan.

And the people rule. And all kinds of good. So that the people come. And then we need more rules to keep them. We need a simple spiritual experience. Where we drink from the fountain of the living water.

Because. There is a path to the fountain. Show me the path Lord. And again in our cross say. Shall ye of us. This must have been. Has it not? Won't you. Lord. That is my prayer. That you by your grace and your mercy.

Will lead me. Because you are Jehovah Ruhi. The Lord my shepherd. Lead me to the waters where I will find nourishment for my soul. Won't you do this for me Lord. It is prayer. And you study the revivals of the old times.

Historical Revivals and the Power of Prayer

You will find that it was with a lot of prayer. And a lot of tears. By the men and the women who God used for these revivals. Ordinary men and women. I am thinking of William Seymour. A black man with one eye.

Crooked nose and a crippled leg. Praying, reading the word of God. But realizing this is something like the powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit. And they prayed. It was the beginning of the Azusa Street Revival in 1906.

And we are still the product of that revival. Amazing. When Andrew Murray and his father. I believe his father prayed often. He made it his business. He desired revival. Andrew Murray in the cave. Prayed for revival.

And then one day they had a conference. And the next day there was a prayer meeting. And the youth gathered in the church building. Other meetings were also going on in other areas of the church. And Andrew Murray wasn't in this one meeting.

And then he prayed. Or he wasn't there. There was a young colored girl. Which was not the norm. Carats were not really allowed to pray. But the elder allowed her to pray. And she started praying a simple prayer of a believer.

And they say there was a sound of a rusting wind coming near. And it filled the whole place. And the people fell to the ground confessing their sins. And one of the members ran to Andrew Murray and said, You must have done something wrong.

And Andrew Murray came running. He said, What's going on? Be quiet! Be quiet! But the more he shouted, the more the people confessed their sins. And crying for forgiveness. And later on he cried, I am your pastor.

I am sent by God. Be quiet! Could not stop it. And it went on. It changed that part of the Cape. And still many of us and where we are today are the by-product of that revival. It was Evan Roberts. We went to Wales once.

I went there and we visited all these places of revival. Evan Robbins prayed there in Wales. And he attended a meeting where an evangelist preached about revival. The evangelist's name was Steph Joshua.

And he prayed. He said, Lord, bend us. And this thing just struck into Evan's heart and mind. And he started praying, Lord, bend us. So the next day he went back for another meeting. And then he prayed again.

He went on his knees and he cried out, Lord, bend me, bend me, bend me. It is all that I need that you will bend me. And then later he confessed. And I am reading that it was God's love that made me to bend before Him.

And then the pings of God overshadowed my whole system. He said, after this, I was filled with a special love for those who are lost. And I bowed my knees for their salvation. The product of revival. Prayer.

Corporate Prayer for Renewal and Boldness

Psalms 65 verse 6. Psalm 65 verse 6. He does not give the foundation of His wisdom. He gives the power of forgiveness and the power of reconciliation for those who have no power. That is why we must pray.

The disciples are threatened in Acts chapter 4. They say, remain silent, because the Pharisees have not read the Scripture. They do not speak again in the name of this Jesus. Then they go to their mates, to the other disciples.

And they tell them of the good that happened to them. We are not allowed to speak in the name of Jesus anymore. And when they heard this, I read, they unified their voices to God and said, Lord, You are the God of heaven and earth and the heavens and everything that is made therein.

And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats. Give them the power to speak Your Word with all freedom. That You would stretch out Your hand to mercy. And that You would place signs and wonders in the name of the Holy Child Jesus.

And when they prayed, the place where they were together was filled. And it was all filled with the Holy Spirit. Can I say, again filled with the Holy Spirit. And they spoke the Word of God with freedom.

So quickly after Pentecost comes a revival. We need quick revivals. Not quick revivals, quick togetherness. We need an experience every day. Because we live with Christ. It is not a single theological decision that has been made.

It is a lifestyle. I and you, who have a desire in our hearts for a deep, intimate walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. Who have a desire that the Word must go forth with strength and righteousness and truth.

Who have a desire that the Holy Spirit will take His rightful place in the Church again. And everything about you, that is my desire. When I go to church, I pray that I will receive and maintain you. Not that my culture, my denominationalism, my whatever, will stop me.

I am looking for words, I am looking for phyllis. What is my worldview? That my worldview is not dominated by my past. Because I am now a child of God. I no longer have a past. I did not make it. He did not take my old book and gave me a new one.

He threw away the old blood. He covered it with His precious blood on the cross. And gave me a new book. The book of life. We all say amen for our lives. If I am one of you, and I have to ask for justice, most of you will say yes.

Personal Surrender and the Joy of New Life

But before, most of you would have said yes. But you know what? I am a man with a quiet example within me. Experience. But you should not change my good deeds. I would like to go on as I am, within your experience.

As long as you do not touch my activities, my plans, my good deeds, my children, my good deeds. Send your experience to me. Give me the predicant. Give me the pastor. And then my elders. And then the deacons.

And then the pastors. And then come and pray to Jesus. Forget about us. Because life is so long before us. How much do we want an experience? We will say, how convenient it is that you do not bring my husband to an experience.

Or my boss. I remember that old song we always sang. Brother, but not my sister, but it's me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer. It's me, it's me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer. It's me, it's me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer.

Experience changes everything. Amen. I don't say Amen, I say Amen. Experience changes everything. And what is experience? It changed the deacons. They were no longer trusted. Because the elders no longer cursed and told them what to do.

They said, come deacon, you are so beautiful. Things have changed. The crew has become empty. The faith has become empty. The police no longer had a job. It brings a total change in a nation. And God can do it.

Come on, no one says Amen. You know, we drive back to the past, children. We drive all the way through the desert. That sounds lame. Because it's dry and it's dead. And I remember in the Segel 37, the dead legs that the Segel had to profit over.

I say, friends, because there is one place where the one-sided militia is okay, but the other militias are like that. And they are grey. I say, Father, see, it's over with the militia. I think so, I didn't say it so beautifully, but it's over with the militia.

Anyway. Yes. And that Saturday morning it started to rain.

In that North Cape. Oh, it rained. While we were still finishing up.

And look, you know, where there was still a lot of grass. Not politically safe. Within minutes,.

It's a lake of water.

I say to you, how long will it take us, with trucks and watercars, to do that? It will never happen. Within minutes. When we drive back on Monday, I say, God knows, we are on the right path. Because this whole place is an oasis.

Everything is green. My brothers won't believe it. It's green. It doesn't even look like it's outside. Everything is green. If you go to that country of the dead militias, here they are all, very green.

I can't find a better word for it. An extreme word for green. But green. They are growing. And you know, the Lord said to me just like that. He who thirsts for water, if that fountain of life is closed, this nation, can change within days.

If God has been making his life, we pray to God. Come on God. Just say, Amen. Because it's true. Because it's the latter rain. We must pray for the latter rain. Because that latter rain will bring life, like you and I would never ever imagine.

Amen. Glory. I say, Glory. What is the product of this fountain? I say, where is our answer to the question? He says, will you not make us alive again? So that your people can be happy again. The product of revival, simply, joy in the Lord.

Joy in the Lord and Heavenly Citizenship

And that's what we need. This experience will make us so happy, that it will make us rejoice in the Lord. If we are happy, then we talk, if we are not. If the blue bill performed, then our mouths are full.

And then we talk, we get up and say, wow, you've seen with him, guys. But if they lose, then they will have their boots in the trunk, don't even talk about him. Jesus never lost, did he? He was just always the conqueror, Lord and Master of the whole world.

We have a reason to laugh at him, but we cut up a bit of a tower, or something that you can see inside. We cut, revive. Make us alive, after your word, oh Lord. So that we can be happy, about what you do.

And witness joy in it. You see, these days we are so, very, very sad. And we have a reason to be. Because we look at ourselves, to our own heritage in South Africa. And we feel and we see, how it all goes to the ground.

We lose our freedom. We sound like the Uralite, when we go to their ballroom. I don't know the words anymore. But I read to you. By the river of Babel, there we sat and our tears flowed, as we think of Zion.

The good old days, when we die. To the wild trees in that land, we gave our lives, to those who led us out of prison, we asked to sing a song, to see, to sing, to those who have suffered for us, of our joy we want to have.

Sing for us! Look, sing for us! A song about Zion! How can we sing the song of the Lord, in a foreign land? That's how we feel. Some patriots, then your heart must feel like this, or there is something wrong with you.

But, there is something wrong. It must be rectified. It must be rectified, because our future, and our holiness, and all our wonderful good, is not in a land of soil and clay. Because our citizenship is of heaven.

And as long as we have that virtue, of a citizenship, of a citizenship, of a wonderful heaven, then we have the joy of the Lord within us. This joy that I have, the world didn't give it to me. This joy that I have, the world didn't give it to me.

This joy that I have, the world didn't give it to me. The world didn't give it, and the world is not going to take it away. Do you hear what I say to you? It is a fruit, that you cannot buy with money.

It is a fruit, that you cannot get from a wine bottle, or a drink bottle, or any other bottle, or from a pill. It is a fruit, that does not react to your eternal bank balance. It is a fruit, that the world does not give.

And all these other three good things, are fruits, that are of short life. They are of eternal happiness. Feel so happy. Hold on to that. Hold on to that. Until the first pop, or the first strike, that joy is gone.

But God, the joy of the Lord, and the influence of this joy of the Lord, is through His life. Beloved, He said in Hebrews, We are going to give you things of better things. Four things to prepare for us.

Number one, the joy of His resurrection. Hello? Come on! It is reason to be happy, isn't it? The joy of His full-time presence. Amen? He was angry, then He came down, then He went up, then He went down, to never let us down.

Hello? Wherever we may be, He is there. It is reason to rejoice. Number three, the joy of our citizenship in heaven, We know where we are going, Philippians 2 .20, because our citizenship is in heaven, from where we were lost, our Lord Jesus Christ.
