Isaiah 9:6-7
So please turn with me to the book and the prophecy of Isaiah. Isaiah chapter 9. I've titled this the promise deliver. Part 2. Part 1 was a great light appeared. Here we have a great King is born.
And.
He is that great light. Jesus even said in Revelation that he is the bright morning star. Isaiah chapter 9 verse 1 through 7. Verse 1 through 7. Hear the word of the Living God. Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed as when at first he lightly esteemed the land of Zebulun and the land of Natheli and afterward more heavenly oppressed her.
By the way of the sea beyond the Jordan and Galilee of the Gentiles The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
A great light.
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death upon them a light has shined. You have multiplied the nation and increased its joy. They rejoice before you according to the joy of Harvest as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
For you have broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder. The rod of his oppressor as in the day of Midian for every warrior's sandal from the noisy battle and garments rolled in blood Will be used for burning and fuel of fire and.
Here's our text today two verses verse six and seven. For unto us a child is born. Unto us a son is given and the government will be upon his shoulder. And his name will be called wonderful Counselor Mighty God Everlasting Father Prince of Peace.
And Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end upon the throne of David and over his kingdom to order it and to establish it with Judgment and justice from that time forward even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this Praise God. May God bless the reading of his word from the hearing of our ears to our hearts this morning, please bow with me in prayer as we Worship our Lord and of hearing his words within this next hour our Father in heaven.
Holy is thy name. Actually Lord your word says heaven adores you and Praises you and even the creatures and the angelic beings cry out. Holy. Holy. Holy Lord God Almighty who was and who is and is to come.
Lord you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things and by your will they exist and were created to worship you to praise you for who you are and for your mighty acts.
Lord our prayer and our hearts desire. This morning as it's already been voiced in the Sunday school thy kingdom come. Thy kingdom come thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. So Lord, that's our hearts desire.
And here we see this unfold before us in your word and our text today Lord speak for your servant hears. For we will be careful to give you all the glory in The name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I pray amen.
Last Lord's Day we saw from this great prophecy from the book of Isaiah here chapter 9 from this glorious chapter of The government of the Promised Son through the mouth of the Prophet Isaiah. First we saw a great illumination in verse 1 and 2.
Second we saw a great increase in verse 3 to 5. Today our focal point will be on verse 6 and 7 a great incarnation a great incarnation and Under that main heading I would like to observe three major points of our text.
First in verse 6a He is a marvelous. He is marvelous in how He came he is marvelous a marvelous King and how he came. Second we will observe and Verse 6 be he is a king a king is majestic in who he is Marvelous and how he came Majestic in who he is and third and verse 6 and 7 we will observe.
He is mighty and what he will do. He is marvelous majestic and mighty Mighty and what he would do so from the beginning Of the book of Genesis it was we read and The wonderful Word of God running all the way through to the book of Malachi all 39 chapters.
Or.
Not only chapters, but books I should say of the Old Testament books. God unfolds Unpacks for us the drama of Redemption and the true essence of the Christmas story. The matter of fact it points us step by step and stroke by stroke a Beautiful portrait of God's Messiah the Lord Jesus Christ the glory of Christmas.
Who is the king of glory? The Lord of hosts he is the king of glory. This king here in this text before us is Revealed to us and Has four names four titles in which is given. Before we look at that, let me give you an introduction.
And Genesis 3 15 He is the seed of the woman.
In.
Genesis 12 3 he is the offspring of Abraham. In Genesis 49 10 he is the tribe of Judah. In Numbers 24 17 he is the star come out of Jacob. And Deuteronomy 18 15 he is the prophet greater than Moses. Second Samuel 7 12 he is the son of David who will reign forever and ever.
Psalm 2 he is the Lord's anointed. And Psalm 22 he is the righteous sufferer. And Psalm 110 he is the priest after the order of Mac as a dick. Which brother been pointed out so glorious this morning? And Isaiah 7 14 He is the virgin conceived Emmanuel and I say a 53 he is the sufferer suffering servant of the Lord.
And Daniel 7 and 13 and 14. He is the coming Son of Man. And In Micah 5 2 he is the babe born in Bethlehem and Here in our text today. In Isaiah 9 1 through 7. He is the greater Gideon Who is to come and he is the king?
That has four names. Now, let me give you a backdrop of what is going on and brother Keith Briefly mentioned it about what was happening in the backdrop, but there was a very dark days and times then that matter of fact is One writer says the worst of times Definitely was not the best of times.
But we'll become the best of times. But here are very dark days upon Israel and the year approximately 725 BC the northern kingdom of Israel faced perilous times and situations from the north and an evil aggressive Assyrian Empire growing and expanding and literally oppressing Israel.
Oppressed.
While there was gloom in 722 BC Israel would be overcome and overrun and crushed and Humiliating defeat. It was very dark times in Israel in that day. Loved ones would be literally brutally killed. The families would be destroyed and broken The land would be devastated Economic havoc Would be rampant and the once proud nation of Israel Would be brought to its knees in humility and disgrace and shame.
While judgment was upon Very dark very gloomy times were upon them and yet and Yet, I want you to think of this in The midst of great darkness and gloom and hopelessness They received a word from God Hallelujah.
God did not abandon them Even though he was sovereign and all that was taking place The gloom would leave. They received a word from God through the prophet Isaiah a word from heaven. The gloom in verse 1 would be turned to rejoicing verse 3.
Listen to this the distress in verse 1 would be turned to joy in verse 3 the oppression of verse 1 would be turned to a broken yoke in verse 3. The darkness of in verse 2 would be turned to a great light in verse 2 and the shadow of death in verse 2 would be overcome in verse 6.
All those verbs are in perfect tense.
Why.
Affirming the prophet Isaiah's certainty. That they would occur. See that was fulfilled literally in Matthew chapter 4 and I read it last Lord's Day, but I'm gonna read it again because we need to see the fulfillment of this prophecy.
Again in chapter 4 verse 12 through 17 now when Jesus heard that John had been put into prison He departed to Galilee leaving Nazareth. He came and dwelt in Capernaum. Which is by the sea in the regions of Zebulun and Nathilai that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Isaiah the prophet saying the land of Zebulun in the land of Nathilai by the way of the sea beyond Jordan Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light and Upon those who sat in the region and the shadow of death light has dawned.
From that time Jesus began to preach to say repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand and notice that Jesus is no longer here within this text a baby, but he's a grown man. We need not forget that Christmas is more than just Jesus being born in the incarnation.
Which is great and a great mystery and we will see that that is part of him coming into this world. But we must see that he's a man Christ Jesus that entered into the world to seek and save the lost. For there's no salvation outside of Christ.
He is it he is the salvation of God. He is Emmanuel God with us. EJ Young paraphrases it at this text in Isaiah. Basically like this there is Great rejoicing among God's people because God has broken the yoke of the burden and oppression and the burden and the oppression are removed because the weapons and garments of the warrior are destroyed and The basic reason for the blessings is that a child is born in quote.
And that child and who is this child that was born? None other than the Lord Jesus Christ the king of glory. The king of glory. I don't know who said it, but I wrote this down right when I came here and I saw this Posted there was no quote.
It may be anonymous, but it's so simple, but it's so profound a Thousand times in history a baby has been become a king but only once. Only once in history did a king become a baby and That is Jesus. That is the Lord Jesus Christ 700 years seven centuries before wise men gave before they came to give their gifts gold mirror and frankincense the angels songs before 700 years before the angel sings or The shepherds came and the prophet Isaiah by the Holy Spirit explains what Christmas is all about the very cornerstone and centerpiece of all prophetic prophecy.
Hallelujah. And the Word of God gives to us the exact details of the Messiah's birth. I mentioned it in the inner intro but chapter 7 tells of.
Christ.
His birth.
That his that the prophecy in verse 14, therefore the Lord himself will give you a son. Behold the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel. Which is interpreted? God with us.
Jesus is God with us so the Word of God is Exact and the great promise is fulfilled in his birth. The glorious revelation that the Lord shows Isaiah that we need to see concerning this glorious Kings Force four titles are given.
First. As I've already mentioned we see and observe. The King is marvelous in how he came. He is marvelous in how he came. We see this in verse 6 of chapter 9. For unto us a child is born. Unto us a Son is given.
Unto us it is imperative that we See the flow of perfect order by the Spirit of God. Here. Isaiah's argument in this section of this book for the virgin-born Emmanuel as he gave the prophecy in chapter 7 verse 14 is None other the King with four names in Isaiah 9 6 7.
Is the rod from the stem of Jesse and chapter 11 verse 1 and there shall come forth a rod from the stem of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And Brother Ben read the rest of it this morning.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him. The spirit of wisdom and understanding. The spirit of counsel and might and the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord all in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is God's Messiah.
He is the anointed one. The promise deliverer of the Old Testament prophecy yet. There is something particular. Great and marvelous and majestic in his coming. Not only in his first advent, but also in his second advent.
His first advent was glorious, but his second advent will be even more glorious folks. We cause he's going to come in power and great glory with all the holy angels leading the Saints and In the scriptures and we will look at it later on in the conclusion, but in Revelation chapter 19 he comes on a great white stallion and On his thigh is written and one in one part of the scripture says of the name that no one else Had would know but we do know he is King of Kings and Lord of Lords because it will be written on his thigh and out of his mouth will come a sharp two-edged sword and He will be glorified.
Because perfect justice will be executed. Something mysterious that only the eyes of faith can behold beloved. The eyes of faith and that's what we need to ask the Lord to give us this morning. Spurgeon put it this way.
I Got a quote by Spurgeon. It's a little lengthy, but stay with me. He spent he speaks here about the virgin birth in this text. This is what he says. The sentence is a double one, but it has in it. No repetitiveness.
It is not a distinction without a difference. Jesus Christ Was a child in his human nature and he was a conceived by the work of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He was truly born as certainly certainly a child as any other human being that ever lived on the face of the earth.
He is in his humanity a child born. But Jesus Christ is also God's Son. He was and is the same substance with the father and the doctrine of the eternal Affiliation of Christ is to be received as an undoubted truth for our holy religion.
But we cannot explain it for it remains among the deep things of God. Deuteronomy 2929 truly one of those solemn mysteries into that the angels dare not look. Nor do they desire to pry into a mystery that we must not attempt to fathom.
Listen to what Spurgeon says. He goes on to say this for it is utterly beyond the grasp of any finite being. And he gives an example here as a gnat might seek to drink in the ocean so a finite creature might seek to comprehend the eternal God.
A God whom we could Understand would be no God if we could grasp him. We could not be in he could not be infinite. If we could understand him, then he would not be divine Jesus Christ then as a son was not born to us, but given.
Given.
He is a blessing bestowed upon us John 3 16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son That whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. He was already God's Son when he was born into this this world And he was sent or given so that we could Clearly perceive that the distinction is a suggestive one and conveys much good truth about God.
To us.
In quote he came in Earthly humanity literally, it means for a child is born unto us. A child is born. This holy child conceived the Holy Spirit enters into the dark womb of the Virgin Mary. This speaks of his earthly beginning.
A child born. This speaks of the baby baby in Bethlehem. A Child is born unto us for us for our good. Like Spurgeon said a child is.
Born.
The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. Our Lord Paul says thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. Hebrews 2 14 affirms and says this in as much as the children have partaking The flesh and blood.
He himself likewise shared in the same Galatians 4 4. Wonderful verse. But when the fullness of time come God sent forth his son born of a woman Born under the law to redeem us. For unto us a child is born that's his humanity.
Unto us the Son is given that's his deity. For unto us the benefit is us who is unworthy sinners. To receive such a gift. But Jesus said come unto me all you labor and heavy laden. I'll give you rest.
He says come. And Jesus also said he that comes to me. I will no wise cast out. Come all thirsty calm sinners. He's also established these words in Luke 2 11. For there is born unto you. His brother Keith read this morning this day in the city of David a.
Savior.
He enters into this world to be a Savior. His mission was to go to the cross to die on the cross as a Savior who is Christ the Lord. So you see in the same verse he's a Savior, but he's Lord. That's what Paul says in Romans 10 9 and 10.
Let me read it to you wonderful wonderful verse of Salvation one that we should all know well. That you cannot separate the Savior hood from the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is paramount it is Inseparable.
And Paul says that that In verse 8. And what does it say? He's talking about Scripture. The word is near you in your mouth and in your heart. That is the word of faith, which we preach that if you confess there's first confession with your mouth The Lord Jesus notice the Lord Jesus and Believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead.
You will be saved. But with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture says whoever believes on him would not be put to shame. For there's no distinction between Jew or Greek or For the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon him.
For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. And he's quoting actually from the Old Testament Joel. Whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered. Joel says, but that's what salvation is.
It's deliverance. Through the Deliverer the Lord Jesus Christ a Son is given humanity.
Deity.
Notice the mingling here the mingling of Christ of his meekness his lowliness. He is the Lamb of God but yet there's a beautiful mingling here and Two of his natures yet. There is awesome power like a lion in majesty.
That is revealed in Scripture as well. We see this in Revelation chapter 5. Turn with me there to Revelation 5. This is a great chapter. And you want to know what worship is about go to Revelation? And we could see all about worship about heaven knows there's no other book all the books all 66 books inspired by God are great books.
But and God is God he has breathed into all of them. But Revelation tells us more about worship than any other book. I want you to notice this. The Lamb takes to scroll. And I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside on the back and sealed with the seven Seals, then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice Who is worthy to open the scroll into lucid seals?
No one in heaven. No one in heaven folks. Listen to this or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or To look at it. So I wept much. Because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll or to look at it, but There's a transition there.
But.
One of the elders said to me do not weep.
Behold.
The lion of the tribe of Judah The root of David has prevailed to open the scroll and loose its seven seals. Those seven seals Contained All of God's wrath and judgments. Both bowls and all that would unfold and be released on the earth in mighty waves.
God will pour out his wrath in those days and these days. And I looked and behold in the midst of the throne and on The four living creatures listen is in the midst of the elders stood a lamb. The lion is the lamb right as though it had been slain Which are the seven spirits of God sent out to all the earth.
And then he came and took the scroll out of the right Hand of him who sat on the throne that's Christ comes forth and he takes the scroll from the father out of his right hand. Right hand is a symbol of God's power.
The father's right hand of power that that scroll some is Suggested that this was the title deed of the earth. Some has said this is the decrees of God. We don't know for sure, but no doubt. It's something very important.
Within that scroll That no one in heaven has are worthy. They're not worthy, but one to unfold and to break. Those seals now verse 8 now when he had taken the scroll the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the lamb.
Notice this when he took it these 24 elders fell down before the lamb. They fell down for each having a harp. Golden bowls full of incense are the prayers of the Saints and They sang a new song saying you are worthy to take the scroll.
To open its seals for you were you were slain and have redeemed us to God by your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation and have made us kings and priests to our God. Excuse me, we shall reign on the earth.
And then I looked And heard the voice of many angels around the throne the living creatures and the elders listen to word God's Word and The number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands.
Do you math? We don't know that's innumerable. Can you imagine hearing that the thunderous voices? Accolade through heaven and shake heaven saying with a loud voice worthy is the lamb.
Who was slain.
To receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing. Notice. That's a sevenfold doxology. Perfection given to the Lamb of God worship is given to the Lamb Jesus Christ and Every creature which is in heaven and on earth and under the earth and such ours in the sea and all that are in them.
I heard saying blessing and honor and glory and power to him who sits on the throne and to the lamb forever and ever. And then the four living creatures said amen. And The 24 elders fell down and worshiped him who lives forever and ever.
There you see the lion in Majesty, who is the lamb in meekness? The incarnate Son of God Son of Man. John Phillips says this the great mystery of the manger is that God should be able to translate deity into humanity without discarding the deity or distorting the humanity.
Amen. The incarnation was a true genuine wedding. I'd like to say a perfect deity. Sinless Humanity. What about the Word of God? What does it say about this mystery about his? Mingling of majesty and meekness.
We have the Apostle Paul says it well and I like it's easy to remember this because we all familiar with John 3 16. What about first Timothy 3 16? First Timothy 3 16. Without controversy. The Apostle Paul says great is the mystery of godliness.
What is it? This was known as a hymn of faith a confession of faith. This is a confession to the early church and they sang it God was manifested in the flesh. Justified in the spirit seen by angels preached among the Gentiles believed upon the world received up into glory.
What a confession that's our confession. Highly respected 1689 Confession. But that right there is all based upon everything in the Word of God. It's just basically broken down and studied and we should know it.
Confessions are very important but the confession of 1689 the Westminster confession with the press for the Presbyterians and so forth that these confessions are great. They fence the doctrine of the Bible and explain.
And a verse-by-verse. Precept by precept of what the Word of God the confession the confession says. Peter made the great confession and he said that Jesus Christ is Lord. And he said upon this rock.
Jesus said upon this rock. I Will build my church because Peter is the one by revelation of the Father said Basically that Jesus Christ is the anointed one the son of the Living God.
That's it.
Jesus Christ May we never lose that because he is the chief cornerstone the church Incarnation the true and genuine wedding of perfect deity and sinless humanity. Jesus came in earthly humanity to seek and save sinners.
He came in heavenly deity as well and How marvelous? He came. Not only did he come marvelous. Next we see we behold him. He is majestic and who he is. He's a king. You know the chapters before this we in chapter 9 here in Isaiah.
But if you turn back to Isaiah 6 and the year Kings Uzziah Died I saw the Lord sitting on a throne high and lifted up and the train of his Robe filled the temple and above it stood Seraphim each had six wings with two he covered his face and with two he covered his feet with two he flew one cried to another said holy, holy, holy.
It's the Lord of hosts the whole earth is full of his glory. The post of the door was shaken by the voice of who cried out in the house was filled with the smoke. And so I said, this is Isaiah a righteous prophet.
Woe is me for I'm undone. I'm ruined. I'm Disintegrated that's what he's saying. I'm undone Because I'm a man of unclean lips lips. I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the king the Lord of hosts the Lord of the armies.
One of the seraphim that's in its literal translation. The seraphim was a burning ones the burning ones Flew to me having in his hand a live coal Which he had taken from the tongues from the altar and he touched my mouth with it.
And he said behold this has touched your lips and your iniquity has taken away and your sin is purged. That painful repentance here beloved Persian cleansing the prophet Isaiah so he can speak the Word of God and How holy is God's Word for him to speak and he knew his lips were unclean.
He cries out, but God has a remedy it's purified by fire and.
Blood and.
If you notice in verse 8, I heard the voice of the Lord saying whom shall I send and who will go for us? The Trinity right there. Then I said here am I Send me. He volunteered and said go and then God said go and tell this people keep on hearing.
Do not they do not Understand and keep on saying but do not perceive. Make the heart of this people dull in their ears heavy and shut their eyes. Lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart.
Return and be healed. See He sees the King of Glory. Jesus is that King of Glory. He became flesh the Word Was made flesh. He is a wise counselor.
Who.
Solves our confusion First of all. Second. He is a worthy defender who shelters us from conflict. Third. He's a watchful father Who showers us? With compassion he is a wonderful Comforter who soothes our conscience?
This King is majestic and who he is. Now I want you to think of this. More than 250 names and titles Is given to our Lord Jesus Christ scattered throughout to Genesis to Revelation and Isaiah brings together for tight concise package appear here in nowhere else in the Bible and taken together they encapsulate here the total of The person of the Lord Jesus Christ and his works of who he is and what he has done.
I love these titles. And what does the Word of God say? For into us a child is born unto us the Son is given and next within The same verse we see him here. He's born as the Savior Lord and Savior King of glory comes.
But now we will see and the government will be upon his shoulder. He will be a king of kings over kings and Lord over lords. His name will be called wonderful counselor mighty God everlasting father prince of peace.
Let's look at him. I Like the words Wonderful. They emphasize his deity. Notice this counselor emphasizes his humanity. Mighty emphasizes his deity. God emphasizes his deity.
Everlasting.
Emphasizes his deity father Emphasizes his humanity prince emphasizes his humanity peace emphasizes his deity. The all this is coupled with the child born and Son is given to result in nothing less than the God man.
Emmanuel God with us. Folks this is too deep for us. This is such a mystery of one person. No one like him in the universe and he's the one that made the universe and he comes in his made flesh.
Godhood.
Humanity flesh God with us. His name will be called wonderful counselor. Let's look at it. This should be translated as one word now. It's just as good. It seems like you could say wonderful counselor, amen.
But the word wonderful refers to the ability to work supernatural signs and the word counselor refers to implementing supernatural wisdom. So Jesus came both to do signs and wonders right and to give wisdom by his teaching.
So he's wonderful counselor pure wisdom. All wisdom is given to him. Then scripture says he's the mighty God Mighty God. That means a powerful warrior God warrior. The Messiah will accomplish the military exports mentioned in verses 3 through 5.
The word mighty actually was a common one for powerful men warriors who could carry the day by power. It is a Natural word but descriptive of great power great power.
All power.
Jesus said it all power is given to me in heaven and earth. But the word translated God was absolutely divine because it's the most common word in the Hebrew Bible for deity again mingling of the supernatural with the natural in these names.
These words show the infinite power of Jesus our Savior who is omnipotent warrior and who will someday return to earth again to slay all his enemies with the sword of his mouth coming out. The next wonderful title is the eternal father or everlasting.
Father.
This does not mean that Jesus is the father. This is a title given that he will Have this role again mingling of natural with the supernatural. The title father is obviously everyday word, but To couple it with the word eternal everlasting.
It makes it supernatural, right? Humanity and deity once again a father who's going forth is from eternity past and who will continue as a father forever. Ascribing Fatherhood to Jesus is unusual. No doubt.
Given here. We usually reserve it for God the father but Jesus does play a fatherly role toward his disciples and This is given to us an example in the scriptures often he Used the word son or daughter When addressing others affectionately, so he's like the role even though he's a brethren our great brethren the Apostle.
But he is also as the role of a shepherd father. Next we see Prince of Peace. Prince of Peace. Jesus reigns as Prince of Peace a Common word for the government official, but he will be a ruler who brings peace and is characterized by peace.
Because he is our peace. He's broken down that separation as separate that wall that separated us by the blood of his cross. He gave peace. We have peace with God and the peace of God because of Jesus Christ.
This is the very thing that That most warlike conqueror kings can never bring about beloved. Think about this, but Jesus speaks to his disciples after his resurrection. Victory in John chapter 20 go with me very quickly.
I want you to see this John we're going through the book of John in our exposition, but this is glorious John chapter 20. I want you to see how many times Jesus speaks peace to them. And he does it graciously.
Notice in chapter 20 verse 19 then the same day at evening being the first day of the week. That's the Sabbath, but the new Sabbath the Lord rose again. The Sabbath was before that then this is the new Sabbath.
Transitions taking place because we call it the Lord's Day because he rose again from the dead. It's so it's so important when when the doors were shut. Where the disciples were assembled for the fear of the Jews and when fear Jesus came and stood in the mist and said to them the first thing.
What did he say?
Peace be with you peace.
Look at verse 21. So Jesus said to them again. Peace to you How important it is as the father has sent me. I also send you he's commissioning them.
And by the way, it's like a Ordination service in a sense so to speak in verse 22 when he said this he breathed on them and said to them received The Holy Spirit. And if you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven them if you retain the sins of any they are Retained.
He's basically basically giving the ordination service in a sense to them to commission them. But he speaks peace to them and notice again in verse 26. And after eight days his disciples were again inside.
Thomas with them. Jesus came to the doors being shut and stood in the mist and said peace to you peace. John 14 27 Jesus says peace. I leave with you my peace. I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.
Don't let your heart be troubled or fearful. Most of all Jesus gives eternal peace with God as I've already mentioned By the death on the cross. He paid the price in Romans 5 one. Therefore haven't been justified by faith.
We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. So he is the mighty God the Everlasting Father the Prince of Peace. Wonderful counselor and.
Third.
We will see he is mighty in what he does. He is mighty in what he does, you know, it made me think when studying this Wonderful text in Isaiah. That there's a transition. For until a child is born unto us a son is given and then all of a sudden it says the government will be upon his Shoulders.
Like the time frame there is is such a large gap, but the Prophet did not know God's time frame. God's timetable is different than our timetable. There's a cross before this. There's a cross before this and it and there's a wonderful quote I had here.
By.
W a Criswell he said it's so wonderfully. The shoulders that bared the government of the universe are the shoulders that bored the cross to Calvary. I Love that.
Jesus's.
Shoulders can take all that upon him because of who he is and he will reign and rule the earth and righteousness and justice.
Perfect peace.
It's just beautiful. Supernatural the kingdom of Jesus Christ will come that kingdom come that will be done in earth as it is him. So this is a supernatural yet natural conqueror who comes to rule. Rule is king of kings and Lord of lords.
And what is the nature of his perfect kingdom. Verse 7? Describes it magnificently. Notice the word of the increase the increase of his government and peace. Now before I go any further. There was an older man when Jesus was born and Luke 2 his name was Simeon and now there's a reason I want to point this out because Simeon's The Word of God says this in chapter 2 and behold there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon and this man was a just and devout Waiting for the consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon him and notice here.
That had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit. No, I mean times the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. So he came by the Spirit into the temple the Spirit of God led him there.
Notice this. And when the parents brought the child Jesus. Jesus is eventually older here. To do for him according to the custom of the law. Can you picture this this elderly man took? Christ took him up in his arms and blessed God and he worships.
And notice what he says. Lord now you're letting your servant depart in peace. He had the peace of God and peace with God. He says but he said according to your word. Not according to this man or this woman, but according to your word.
He holds Christ and then he says for my eyes have seen your salvation. Beloved he looked more at. He looked at the cross. The Holy Spirit revealed this to him. Not many people knew that the Messiah would die but this man knew by the Holy Spirit.
Why how do we know this? My eyes have seen the salvation. Would you have prepared before the face of all the peoples?
No, and the light to the brain the salvation to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel and notice what he says. And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him and Simeon blessed them.
He gave him a blessing and said to marry his mother. No, this is a great prophecy. Listen to this. Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel and for a sign Which will be spoken against Yes, a Sword will pierce through your own soul.
So, you know, he's speaking up When Jesus died on the cross and Jesus said to Mary behold your son. Her heart was pierced. She had she didn't have a clue what he was talking about. But this was fulfilled at the cross and That the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
Beloved.
Look at that and.
This.
Devout God fearing old man departed in peace. He could die in peace because his eyes have seen the salvation of God. We all must run on here of the increase what is the increase of Christ is governed.
How is that is to be never no end. The Hebrew word increased is vast. It gives a sense of ever-growing abundance of multiplication. It makes me think of Genesis 1 28. Then God blessed him and God said to them be fruitful and multiply.
Field the earth and subdue it. How can that be true in heaven, especially because there's no longer babies born in any form of procreation. But I think that heaven Christ's subjects will be morally perfect and they will not forget anything that they have learned.
Right now we see through a glass darkly but in heaven we will see face to face. We will be the print with the Prince of Peace the King of Glory and we'll still be learning and perfected and complete. But ever increasing of greatness of Christ is person in his works forever.
Because we will have a glorified body we will never stop increasing and more and more in our love for him and our passion and Knowledge and able to worship him more and more as as David said in psalm 118 19.
Enlarge my heart that I may keep your commandments. Jesus will reign forever on and ever. He is the rod of Jesse David on David's throne over his kingdom and direct fulfillment of the promise made to David in 2nd Samuel 7 13 through 16.
I believe Hebrews chapter 1 tells it most beautifully. I Love this and actually the writer of Hebrews is quoting Old Testament prophecy prophecy. Once again, you go to Hebrews 1. The Sun is exalted above the angels in verse 5 to which all the angels did ever did he ever say?
You are my son today. I've forgotten you and again I will be to him a father and he shall be to me a son and When he again brings the firstborn into the world, he says let all the angels of God worship him.
They actually said glory to God in the highest.
The angels he says who makes his angels spirits and the ministers a flame of fire. But to the Sun Listen to this. But to the Sun He says your throne. Oh God is forever and ever.
We're.
Talking about the king of kings and the Lord of Lords. We will be subjects to him in his kingdom. Are you subjects to him now? Scripture goes on to say a scepter of righteousness is a scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness therefore God your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness more than your companions. And Verse 10 you Lord in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish but you remain. They will all grow all grow old like a garment. But like a cloak you will fold them up and they will be changed. But you are the same and your years will not fail. Forever and ever.
The increase of his government. Hallelujah praise his name. Jesus will reign forever and ever and ever. How do we know that way if you go to Revelation? Chapter 6. It's all over Revelation. I don't have enough time to go through all these scriptures.
Chapter 6. Find my place here real quickly. I'm sorry. Chapter 11 seventh trumpet after the seventh trumpet sounds than the seventh angel. Sounded and there will be loud voices in heaven saying the kingdoms of the this world has become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ and he shall reign forever and ever.
Notice this and the 24 elders who sat before God on the thrones fell on their faces and worship God. This is in heaven saying we give you thanks.
Oh Lord.
God Almighty the one who is and it was and who is to come because you have taken your great power and reigned. The nations were angry and your wrath has come. And the time of the dead that they should be judged that they that you should reward your servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear your name and small and great and shall Should destroy those who destroy the earth.
It's glorious, isn't it? And then it says in the temple of God was opened in heaven and the ark of this covenant was seen in his temple and there were Lightning's and noises and thunders and earthquake and great hail.
That means judgment has come through the judge of judges.
Glorious.
Will it be? You seen? His kingdom will have no end to it. Jesus fulfills that as the reigning as the son of the Living God the son of David Matthew 1 1 and David himself will be on his face before God and the Lord Jesus Christ worshiping him with the rest of all the redeemed throughout all ages.
Jesus will establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness. In other words a perfectly perfectly righteous King who loves righteousness and hates wickedness will make sure that those attributes will characterize his kingdom forever and ever.
Protecting the poor and the needy rather than exploiting them this everlasting kingdom was a stat will be established. Was it very at the very moment when Christ came into the earth and it would never end.
What guarantees that this will happen? Isaiah says it. Isaiah says it. The Word of God says it. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. God's God has a zeal For setting up his kingdom forever and ever through Jesus Christ.
Makes me think of Psalm 2 doesn't it? What does he say in? Psalm 2. I will declare the degree. In verse 7 the Lord has said to me you are my son today. I've forgotten you ask of me and I will give you the nations for the inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession.
You.
Shall break them with a rod of iron and you shall dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel. Now therefore be wise O Kings Be instructed you judges of the earth Serve the Lord with fear Rejoice with trembling.
O kiss the Son.
And that beautiful List his he be angry and you perish in the way. When his wrath is kindled, but a little blessed are all those who put their trust in him. Let me give application very quickly. Have you put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ this morning?
Totally and completely we need to understand now by faith the eyes of faith and Faith alone in Jesus Christ that the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death and the grave is total and complete when he said it is finished.
Paid in full he did it alone and no one helped him so that all the glory would be his and his alone as in the day of the median defeat. He calls Satan's kingdom to be just to destroy itself and it turned against each other.
He gives us the plunder forever. What is that? What would be the plunder for us the eternal plunder? Have you ever thought of this eternal life? Eternal peace through the Prince of Peace. Righteousness the righteousness of Jesus Christ that's imputed to us.
That's that's the eternal plunder. That is what the Lord gives. Through what he has accomplished. Accomplished. We rejoice greatly in this great tidings of the Great tidings of great joy. Ask God to restore unto you the joy of His salvation to your heart.
Psalm 51. David cries out those repentance confession repentance. Say to your soul as David says why am I so are you? So dejected cast down, why are you in such a turmoil rejoice in the victory of Jesus Christ today?
For Christ has won the victory. When he defeated Satan and died for our sins on the cross. Meditate on these awesome titles given to Jesus Christ and to him alone. He's wonderful counsel or mighty God everlasting father.
Principes. And allow each word and each title to have time and your thoughts and your Meditation to him and love and adore him and obey him. Most of all this brings us to theology always leads to doxology.
This is more than just information. This is transformation. This is more than just knowing in our brains. It's in our heart and our part of our very being. Praise and worship and adore Christ for he alone is worthy as the Word of God says.
He alone is worthy for each aspect of the attributes in which he possesses. But most of all worship him for who he is. He's great. And glorious and it's about faith and faith alone. By the power of the Spirit of God we could do this.
Jesus is the supreme ruler and he will reign forever and ever. This is why he came to save us from our sins. That we would be subjects and submissive submissive under his lordship. A Lot of talk about Jesus being Savior today.
But what about him being Lord? And by the way, he's not going to be Savior unless he's Lord because you cannot divide the two. He's Lord and Savior. He's king of kings. He's Lord over Lords. We are to submit fully to his authority and to his lordship.
Look forward to an eternity with him. I like what Edward. Edward says. How can you expect to spend an eternity loving God if you can't spend a little time here with them now? Supping with him and praying to him and seeking him and having supper time with him as Mary did at the feet of Jesus.
Heaven will not be static beloved. It will not be boring. It'll be a place of rich discoveries of Jesus forever and ever and don't you look forward to it? Tell the lost tell the world be the evangelist.
Tell the good news great tidings of great joy. That this babe that's born in the manger is the king of glory. And he desires to save them from their sin. Be loving be kind be gentle. But be truthful and be bold in the gospel.
Hallelujah. The king is marvelous and how he came. The king is majestic and who he is the king is mighty and what he would do. He will rule completely. He will rule eternally. He will rule powerfully.
Thy kingdom come that will be done and earth as it is in heaven. Let's pray father. We thank you so much This glorious morning on your Lord's Day. To come here to worship with your people. Oh Lord. Thank you so much for your wonderful word.
Lord it is True food to our souls. Thy word Hidden in my heart that I may not sin against you. Oh God help us to hide and meditate upon this wonderful word today. Thank you father for your your son. On your right hand of power.
You set the decree you declared the decree. Lord you said To Christ you are my son. Today, I've begotten you you are well pleased in him well pleased in Jesus King of glory. Laid aside his glory. Laid aside the glory and came Condescended and humbled himself.
All the way to the manger and even to the point of death to the cross. Lord thank you for such a price that was paid for our salvation. Lord it'd take in eternity to just thank you and worship you for all that you've done through Jesus Christ.
Reconciling us back to yourself. And that's our message to this world be reconciled to God. Father help us to burn passionately as desiring you more and more. Forgive us of our many many sins. Oh God and cleanse and purify us and sanctify us through this word.
We thank you for the word. We thank you for the that the child that is born unto us a son is given done to us and The kingdom the government will be upon his shoulder. And his name will be called wonderful counselor mighty God the everlasting father prince of peace.
His kingdom.
Lord will be you order he will order it. Establish it with judgment and justice the judge of all the earth. Father. What a privilege it is just to be part of this kingdom by your grace Lord. It's it boggles our mind.
It staggers our imagination. But we thank you for it Lord, we thank you that you have a zeal for this. You will perform it. We praise and thank you in Jesus name.
Amen.
