DAY 203: Isaiah 28–30

Welcome to 5-Minute Bible, your daily guide for your daily reading. Today's July the 22nd and we'll be looking at Isaiah 28 through 30. Now yesterday, Hosea brought Israel's covenant lawsuit to its dramatic conclusion.

Judah Repeats Israel’s False Refuge

The northern kingdom had trusted in idols and kings and wealth, even Egypt and Assyria, but every false refuge that they were trusting in failed. Israel sowed the wind and reaped the whirlwind and because of that they went into exile.

And yet the Lord still promised to heal their apostasy and to love his people freely and to conquer the death that their sins deserved. Well today we turn back to Isaiah and to Judah. Judah has seen Israel collapse, but her leaders, instead of repenting, actually repeat the same sins.

They're seeking protection through political alliances and schemes. They're looking to Egypt for shelter and trusting human wisdom instead of the Lord. And Isaiah 28 through 30 exposes every false refuge and points God's people to the tested cornerstone that he's laid up in Zion.

Isaiah 28 and the Tested Cornerstone

And in that way, Isaiah 28 begins with a woe against Ephraim, pictured as a fading crown worn by a drunken leader. Ephraim, if you'll remember, is the covenant name for the northern tribes, so the northern ten tribes of Israel.

And their pride is bringing them to ruin. But Isaiah then turns towards Jerusalem, where priests and prophets are also staggering and mocking the Word of God. And because they refuse God's instructions, the Lord will speak to them through foreign lips and an invading army.

Jerusalem's rulers boast that they've made a covenant with death and secured protection from the overwhelming scourge, but the Lord announces that their refuge of lies will be swept away. In contrast, He's laid in Zion a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, and the one who believes in this one will not be shaken.

Isaiah 29: Jerusalem’s Spiritual Blindness

Chapter 29 of Isaiah then addresses Jerusalem as Ariel, David's city. The people draw near with their mouths while their hearts remain far from God. The Lord will humble their false wisdom and their spiritual blindness, and yet He also promises that the enemies that are besieging Ariel will vanish like dust, while the deaf hear, the blind will see, and the humble will rejoice.

Isaiah 30: Egypt, Repentance, and Trust

Then chapter 30 condemns Judah's alliance with Egypt. And without consulting the Lord, they send envoys and wealth southward, hoping that Pharaoh will shield them from the rising tide of the Assyrians.

But Egypt's hope is empty, and the Lord condemns them for it. The Lord calls Judah to repentance and rest and quietness and trust in Him instead of trusting in the other nations. And yet the people refuse, preferring swift horses and human strength over the strength that Yahweh provides.

Even so, the chapter ends with God's mercy. The Lord waits to be gracious. He promises to answer His people to strike down Assyria and to restore them in His time. So as you read today, I want you to ask the following question.

The Collapse of Manufactured Refuges

Why do God's people keep running towards powerless refuges when the Lord Himself has promised to save them? Isaiah 28 -30 shows that unbelief does not merely reject God, it manufactures alternative gods.

When sinners refuse to rest upon the Lord, they build shelters from lies, alliances, wealth, strategy, religious performance, and even human approval. But all of those refuges are constructed apart from God, and all of them will collapse.

And in that way, the key and central tension in these chapters is between the cornerstone that God provides and the refuge that sinners manufacture. Judah's leaders are planning, negotiating, sending messengers, and building alliances.

Outwardly, they appear active and responsible. They're doing their due diligence as leaders. But Isaiah calls their activity rebellion. And because of that, he condemns the plans that they make without the Lord.

And that gives this passage a sharp personal application in our life as well because we often confuse motion with faithfulness. When fear rises, we plan harder. We try to control more of the details. We search for the visible guarantees that will make us feel safe.

And those actions aren't necessarily sinful. But the sin begins when we replace repentance, prayer, obedience, and trust for the things that we're seeking other than God. Jerusalem's leaders made a covenant with death because they believe that they can outmaneuver judgment.

They call their arrangement peace, but God calls it a refuge of lies. And this is how false refuges work. We tell ourselves that money, reputation, political power, religion, or cleverness will keep us safe.

But when the hail comes and when the flood rises, every lie is exposed. Now, at the same time, Isaiah offers something solid. God lays a test in a precious cornerstone in Zion. His people do not need to invent salvation.

They need to rest upon the salvation that He is going to provide them. And this explains the call in chapter 30. In repentance and rest you will be saved. In quietness and trust is your strength. In that way, repentance turns from the false religions and refuges and idols, and it rests not in panic but in quietness that rejects the sort of frantic, anxiety-driven self-salvation projects that all of us are prone to committing to, and it receives our strength from the Lord.

Judah prefers fast horses because visible speed feels safer to her than invisible providence. But still the Lord is gracious. Still He exposes every false refuge because He's calling His people back to the only foundation that cannot ever move.

Jesus Christ as the True Cornerstone

And in all of that, this points us to Jesus as the true cornerstone, the true refuge, the true wisdom of God. Jerusalem's rulers trust a covenant with death, but God lays a corner in Zion. The New Testament identifies Jesus Christ as this chosen and precious cornerstone.

Human builders reject Him, but whoever believes in Him will never be put to shame. Every human refuge fails because death stands behind it. Wealth can't outlast death. Political powers can't command the grave.

Strategy cannot negotiate with judgment. Religious ceremony can't erase your guilt. But Christ enters death and defeats it through His cross and His resurrection. Isaiah also condemns people who honor God with their lips while their hearts remain far from Him.

Jesus later applies these words to the religious leaders who preserve human tradition while refusing God's command. Jesus doesn't merely reform outward worship. He cleanses the heart and creates true worshipers.

Finally, the call to repentance and rest and quietness all finds its center in Jesus. He's not one refuge among many. He is the only foundation that's strong enough to bear guilty sinners under judgment and to bring them into true and everlasting peace.

Trusting Christ Instead of Human Power

Those who build their life upon Him will stand, and every other foundation is sinking sand. So as you read Isaiah 28 -30 today, I want you to notice how Judah repeats Israel's sin by trusting human power instead of the Lord.

Egypt can't save. Religious performances cannot hide rebellion. And every refuge of lies will be swept away in the providence of God. And tomorrow, Isaiah will continue the warning against those who go down to Egypt for their horses and then lift our eyes to the righteous King, the outpouring of the Spirit, and the Lord's judgment that is coming upon the nations.
